From the Editor
Before we go to print each month, I look though the magazine and often find myself wondering what obser vations you would make about our town, were you to read it through the eyes of a ‘newcomer ’ I had the ideal oppor tunity to put this into practice this month, as we have some family members moving to Stotfold and I dutifully delivered them a magazine in order for them to gain an insight in to what they can expect from living in the town. The over whelming conclusion was that we really do sell ourselves shor t. The amount of organisations, events, groups and activities on offer really did surprise them - it made us stop and think about all of the people who positively impact daily life in Stotfold and the fantastic contributions they all make - Alongside this, community days such as Stotfest give us a great oppor tunity to catch up with friends and enjoy being a valued par t of our Stotfold community It cer tainly made us think about all of the things we have around us and appreciate ever y thing that little bit more
This month’s magazine does a great job at showcasing just how much we have going on in the town as yet again, it is packed full to the brim with news and events Thank you so much to reader Clare Docker ty for allowing us to borrow the gorgeous picture she took recently up at Fair field, we just knew it would make a great front cover for July! We hope you agree it’s a stunning shot

Good Neighbour Group Enjoy Royal Occasion
After being presented with the King's Award for Voluntar y Ser vice earlier this year, representatives of the Stotfold Good Neighbour Group were invited to a garden par ty at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the group’s incredible achievement John & Annette Talbot attended on behalf of the group, taking along with them their copy of the Stotfold News Magazine!
The group was officially recognised back in December 2025 and celebrated their awarded during a formal presentation ceremony hosted by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Susan Lousada, in April 2026 The Stotfold Good Neighbour Group originated in 2013 and continues to provide help and suppor t ot residents through the incredible network of volunteers

Life Saving Equipment In Memor y of Rachel
During an ordinar y evening shift at Georges Place Fish & Chip shop last summer, 17 year old shop assistant Lola fwas required to per form CPR on her close friend and colleague Rachel, after she was suddenly taken ill
First to arrive on scene that day were Paul and Laura, our local voluntar y Community First Responders Living only a few minutes away, meant that Paul and Laura were able to provide emergency care whilst waiting for fur ther help to arrive Ver y sadly, due to serious medical issues, Rachel was unable to be saved
In the weeks that followed, Lola was determined to turn the traumatic events of that evening into something positive by creating a Gofundme page The page was launched to raise money for a defibrillator to be installed on the wall of Georges Place in the hope that one day it might be able to help somebody else in their time of need Together with help from the community of Stotfold, over £2000 was raised, meaning not only could they purchase the lifesaving equipment, they could also add a plaque in memor y of Rachel, their much loved friend and colleague
Paul McCann from Henlow & Villages Community First Responders told the Stotfold News Magazine, “Both my colleague Laura and I are incredibly proud of Lola for her swift actions in helping her friend Rachel under such difficult circumstances last year ” “We are amazed at her determination to turn this terrible incident into something that could potentially save a life in the future ”
Lola and all the staff at Georges Place would like to take this oppor tunity to thank ever yone from the Stotfold community who donated to the fundraising appeal. The defibrillator is now fully operational and ready for use.

Great Fun At This Years Stotfold Challenge!
Hundreds of people took par t in the Stotfold Challenge this year to help raise money for DKMS a charity that has suppor ted 14 year old Stotfold youngster Amelie, throughout her many years of treatment for leukaemia Lots of fun was had by ever yone throughout the four races, including the family fun run, 5k race, childrens 1k and the ever popular colour run!
Event organiser Jen Powell told the Stotfold News Magazine; “We’re absolutely thrilled with how well this year ’s Stotfold Challenge went.” “It was incredible to see our whole community come together and have so much fun during the colour run, while also seeing ever yone pushing themselves during the 5km run.”

Stotfold Scouts recently returned from another fantastic Summer Camp, this year held in Essex, enjoying a week packed with adventure, teamwork and outdoor fun
One par ticular highlights was a visit to a Cold War nuclear bunker, where the Scouts explored the site and learned about its fascinating histor y. Back at camp, there was plenty to keep ever yone busy, including fire lighting, campfire cooking, outdoor challenges and a range of activities designed to build confidence and practical skills.
The famous cola and mint experiment was also a huge success Although our attempts at building rockets produced more fountains than flights! Ever yone had a great time, par ticularly those watching one of the leaders get thoroughly soaked in the process! As always, the best par t of camp was seeing the Scouts enjoying the outdoors, working together, making new friends and creating memories that will stay with them for years to come
A huge thank you to all the leaders and parents who helped make the week such a success

Simpson Centre
Thank you to ever yone who shared their views during last year ’s consultation on the future of the Simpson Centre
Now that the librar y has moved into the Greenacre Centre, the building is no longer in use, and the Council has been considering its next steps After carefully considering your feedback, the Council agreed that the most sustainable option is to sell the site and reinvest the proceeds in other community facilities, including the Memorial Hall This avoids adding the cost of an ageing building to council tax while returning the site’s value to spaces the whole town can use
We are now seeking professional planning and valuation advice to fully understand the options The valuation has two purposes: to assess the land and disposal options available to the Town Council, and to help guide the Council’s decision on the method of sale. Impor tantly, no decisions have yet been made about the terms of any sale, and we will share more information with residents as it becomes available. We will keep you updated through the Stotfold News Magazine, our website and social media. Questions are always welcome at the office.

This month we chat to Stotfold Town Councilor Nigel Venneear about what his role involves at Stotfold Town Council, together with his love for football and the things he’s change about Stotfold if he could.....
1. How long have you lived in Stotfold for Nigel?
I have lived in Stotfold for 14 years with my wife and grown- up children
2.What made you choose Stotfold as a place to live?
We moved to Stotfold after I retired after ser ving 35yrs as a Police Officer in London We used to live in Hatfield, but as it became more of a university town, we decided we wanted to move to more of a countr yside location.
3.Nigel, how long have you been a member of Stotfold town Council?
I have been a Town Councillor in Stotfold for the last 3 years.
5.What prompted you to become a Town Councillor and what do you enjoy most about the role? I first became a Town Councillor because I wanted to get involved with the local community and felt my previous professional role meant that I had a good background in ser ving the communities I worked in I wanted to get involved with ser ving the town that I lived in I enjoy meeting the public of Stotfold and interacting with them so it felt like the per fect way to do this
6.Many Town Councillors have designated roles within the Council, what is yours and what does it involve? I have recently taken on the role of liaising with the Police in regards to the large amount of anti social behaviour taking place in Stotfold. I represent Stotfold Town Council on the Bedfordshire Police Priority and Tasking Forum with my colleague Cllr John Talbot. Alongside this, I also represent the Town Council at the local scout group. I am also the Chairperson of the Community Engagement Committee for the Town Council.
6. When you re not busy with Town Council du spend you spare time a special n Letchwor th To relax, my wife and I like to go to our caravan in Hunstanton as much as we can, with our foster child

7. If you had the power to change three things about Stotfold, what would they be and why? If I had the power to change things in Stotfold the things I would change are: 1. Ensuring that we maintain a good amount of green space within the area (and tr y and prevent the green space going to housing.) 2.Better transpor t links and lastly, 3. to make Stotfold a safer place to work and relax in
8 Stotfold has many great attributes, many of which contribute towards it being a great place to work and live What do you feel makes us stand out from other neighbouring towns and why?
I believe that Stotfold is a great place to live mainly because of it's location I genuinely feel that there is a good community spirit within the town also We are also for tunate to have a great way of keeping our community informed via our local magazine, The Stotfold News (which makes great reading!)
9. We know you are a keen follower of spor t and are par tial to watching a cer tain team play football in Nor th LondonWe’d love to know whether
my team winning the league?? only if there was a solid commitment from CBC to maintain our roads in good working order!!
10. Whats the most impor tant message you’d like to convey to residents when it comes to their perception of our Town Council and the role it plays within our community? I genuinely feel that as your Town Council, we all work hard to provide a safe place for residents to live and work. Welcome to our news! We continue to spend the vast propor tion of our time outdoors, valuing the natural environment around us, with both nurseries ver y well equipped which ensures children’s development is suppor ted and promoted. We have celebrated national Bee Day and explored the impor tance of bees in our world. We have two new Eco Worlds at both settings and the vegetables we are growing are flourishing! Children water them daily and we hope they will produce lots of tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers! News from Fair field Lower School
It has been a wonder fully busy and successful summer term, with pupils, families and staff coming together to celebrate a wide range of exciting events and achievements A highlight of the term was the much-anticipated summer fete, which proved to be a fantastic success
Pupils showed great determination and enthusiasm during Spor ts Day, where they took par t in a variety of activities and races. The children demonstrated excellent spor tsmanship, teamwork and perseverance, embodying the school’s values while having lots of fun. It was a wonder ful day filled with cheers, encouragement and celebration of effor t as well as achievement.
The school has also enjoyed meeting new families who will be joining in September At the same time, the school community prepares to say a fond farewell to families who have been par t of the school for many years In par ticular, we wish our Year 4 pupils ever y success and happiness as they move on to their middle schools They leave with
many happy memories, strong friendships and a solid foundation for the future
Goodbye to Fair field Park’s Founding Headteacher
Fair field Park Lower School would like to recognise the contribution made by our founding headteacher, Mrs Stone, who will be retiring at the end of the school year Her dedication and vision has shaped the school for the past 20 years As the first and only headteacher to date, she played a vital role in bringing Fair field Park Lower School to life Working closely with the local council and builders, she helped design both schools Her passion and careful planning ensured that Fair field Park would be a welcoming and inspiring place for children to learn. When the doors first opened, the school was home to just 40 children. Since then, under Mrs Stone’s leadership, it has grown into a thriving community of around 500 pupils. Generations of children have benefited from her guidance, care and commitment and her legacy will continue to be felt throughout the school for many years to come.
We thank Mrs Stone for her ser vice and wish her ever y happiness in the future.
Value of the Half Term: Co-operation

Summer term, as always, has been incredibly busy. It is the term that not only explores the most detailed and tricky aspects of the curriculum for our children, but it also one that offers the children a wealth of extra -curricular events, such as school trips, spor ts days and a huge volume of transition events for them all, be it moving year groups or moving settings
This month we have an update from Mrs Harrington, our Head of Curriculum: ‘Year 1 had their first school trip to Her tfordshire Zoo to consolidate their Spring term science unit, ‘Animals including Humans’ The children were ver y excited to spot different animal groups such as mammals, reptiles and birds, and could not believe how big one of the snakes was! They also absolutely loved some of the farmyard animals such as the bunnies and guinea pigs which were ver y cute In addition to this, the children were able to spend some time exploring the dinosaur attraction and said it was their best day!
As par t of their ‘Boats and Beaches’ topic, Year 1 also enjoyed making some interesting ar twork. They looked at a famous photographer and created silhouette pieces to resemble a sunset within a coastal scene. The children's pieces looked really effective and contained boats, piers, cliffs and rocks. As well as this, the children also designed and created a clay relief of a boat The children used a lot of perseverance to roll the clay out evenly and then used a range of skills to car ve patterns into their boats and add extra detail All of the children were ver y excited to take these home

Histor y w to Roecroft Lower School over time. The children had been learning about where Roecroft used to be based and visited the old school site to look at the similarities and differences to our new building. They then went on a walk around the local area to see how much Stotfold has expanded in recent years and so suppor t their understanding of why Roecroft needed to move to a larger site The children really enjoyed this, despite the rainy weather, and built up a clear understanding of how local histor y has directly affected them
Later in the term, Year 2 also had a school trip by coach! The children visited Knebwor th House and had an exciting day out investigating 'How Plants Grow' to suppor t their Summer term Science unit They compared tree types, learnt about what plants need to grow, identified different types of herbs and visited the kitchen garden to learn about plant life cycles In the afternoon, the children enjoyed their packed lunches and loved exploring the Knebwor th For t adventure area. This trip was a lovely enrichment oppor tunity and the children wrote some fabulous recounts back at school.

There will also be a number of transition events for our older children as they experience school life in their chosen Middle Schools as well as a ‘Step Up day’ for all years planned for Friday 3rd July.
All of our children are excited to take par t in Spor ts Week which will include our parents on Tuesday 7th July, in school, if the weather is kind to us!
The end of term (and year!) wouldn’t be complete without our whole school fun day on Tuesday 14th July, hopefully including a visit from the ice -cream van! Year 4s will have their leaver ’s par ty, church ser vice, talent show and assembly on the last few days of the term - Thursday 16th and Friday 17th July All special memories and a chance to reminisce, have fun and wish ever yone well for the future as they leave for big school!!

The Need Project Update
For our next update we hear from Ellie, the Project Director for the Need Project
I cannot believe we are already in to the summer months! It has been another busy and productive month with the day- to-day running of the food bank, alongside oppor tunities for me to attend new venues and give small talks about who we are, what we do, and the suppor t we provide within the community. It has been wonder ful to meet new people and share more about the hear t behind the project.
We had a fantastic time at The Mill, although I do think I drew the shor t straw being there on the Sunday it was freezing! Joking aside, it was such a positive and encouraging weekend to be par t of, and we are grateful for ever yone who came along to suppor t and chat with us
This month, we have been able to provide 589 food parcels across Central Bedfordshire, as well as 345 top- up bags to help prevent food waste and suppor t families with extra essentials Ever y parcel and bag distributed represents someone being cared for during a difficult time, and we never take that oppor tunity for granted
We were also able to gather our amazing volunteers together for an afternoon tea, which was a lovely chance to spend time together and show our appreciation.
Our volunteers are truly at the hear t of ever y thing we do They are vital to the running of the project, and we are incredibly thankful for each and ever y one of them.
I also want to say a massive thank you to ever yone who responded to the sur vey regarding our new premises, par ticularly the upstairs space. We truly believe this area could become a valuable asset for the community, and from your responses, it is clear that many of you feel the same. We continue to pray for wisdom and guidance as we explore how best to develop the space into something that meets the needs of local people As I mentioned last month, please continue to follow, like, and share our social media pages

Stotfold Conser vative Club Snooker League winners!
The Biggleswade and District Snooker league comprises of numerous local teams from Biggleswade, Sandy, Letchwor th and Stotfold areas
The league is played in a friendly, social and mildly competitive way
A small group of competitors in the league play at an impressive level, regularly hitting 100+ breaks, some having maximum 147 breaks to their name
A while ago, our local lads from the Stotfold Conser vative Club B Team took the league title on the last night of the competition, by beating Biggleswade Conser vative Club A
Team 5-3
The Stotfold team scored a total of 105 frames over the season, from a possible 192 over 24 separate matches and evenings The team also secured victor y in the coveted League Knockout competition, making them double winners in the 2025/26 season, a feat not ever achieved by the B Team! The team dedicated this double win to John Whitehorn, the previous long term Team Captain of Stotfold B, who now is sadly unable to play due to long - term illness Hayden Jones, the current Stotfold B Team Captain told the Stotfold News Magazine “John would have loved to have been par t of the team success this year, we

Volunteers’ Week and Summer at Stotfold Mill
Back in the first week of June, we celebrated National Volunteers’ Week, which got me thinking about what it
means to be a volunteer at Stotfold Mill For many people, volunteering is a hobby enjoyed in their spare time –a way to stay active, meet friends and make the most of their weekends For others, it is driven by a passion for histor y and heritage
For me, as a resident of Stotfold for over 20 years, volunteering at the Mill is about giving something back to our wonder ful town. I am proud to play a small par t in helping to preser ve Stotfold Mill, which has stood on the banks of the River Ivel and been milling grain for more than 1,000 years. I think that's pretty special!
Last month, our newest Marketing Team volunteer, Sophie HB Evans, a first-year student at Emil Dale Academy in Hitchin, got fully involved in one of our milling demonstrations It was fantastic to see her enthusiasm and willingness to get stuck in

Down Memory Lane
To continue the theme of family histor y in Stotfold, we take a visit to Hitchin Road, where Margaret Moore tells us all about her family home and the quite unique stor y behind the purchase of it many years ago.
Memories of 164 Hitchin Road..
164 Hitchin Road, Stotfold, built in 1913 by builders called Tom Lake and named Ash Villas, my husband Colin Moore’s grandparents moved in when the houses were newly built, walking from Arlesey with two young sons in a pram - all thier belongings arriving by horse and car t The road was called Asylum Road in those days and lots of the population of Stotfold worked at the Hospital, including his Grandfather who was one of the first psychiatric male nurses at the time. Grandma worked in the laundr y depar tment.
The house had a brick built wash house in the yard, with a toilet outside. The kitchen had a wood burning copper to boil the washing and a range for cooking in the dining room There was gas lighting downstairs, but only candlelight upstairs When both grandparents passed away in the early 1950’s a man called Bob Busby purchased the house and completely modernised it, wiring it for electricity and making the third bedroom in to a bedroom with an indoor toilet
The house has two other owners for a shor t time and then in 1969 we moved in When Colin and I were looking to buy our first house, the first one we were shown was 164 Hitchin Road, it was the right price range for us and when we looked at the paper work Colin said ‘I am sure that is the house that my Grandparents lived in!’ and the rest is histor y.

We have now been here for 57 years and counting In 1977 the old wash house was demolished and Colin had a large double garage put up as by then - he had gone self employed with his sign writing business and needed a workshop He continued his business until 2002 when he retired It was Colin who was commissioned to paint the original Stotfold signs to celebrate the millenium in 2000, but unfor tunately after 25 years of ser vice they have been replaced
And now, three sons, plus wives, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren later, my stor y of 164 Hitchin Road is finished We have been married 64 years Margaret Moore.

The summer months are often a time of community gatherings from village fetes and festivals to cream teas! The sunshine draws us out of our homes (and sometimes even the rain!) to get together for fun, play, friendship and fellowship. We are reminded that is it good to join in and feel par t of something, to live out community in the places in which we live. It is also a great time to be a friendly face to the visitor or share something with someone new, offering a fun and open welcome to all.
