From the Editor

Welcome to July!

Phew! What a busy month we have had! The aftermath of the Stotfold Mill Weekend saw us swing straight back into action with all the preparation for our new magazine, the Arlesey News. Over the last few months, we have been working hard behind the scenes to produce our second publication to compliment our Stotfold News Magazine. Our advertisers expressed an interest in expanding their reach and after speaking with many residents of Arlesey, it confirmed to us that a community magazine exclusive to Arlesey was clearly the next step for us to take. We are very proud to have launched our second magazine – you can find out more details about this on page 4 of this month’s issue. Our sincere thanks to all of our Stotfold News advertisers who have been true to their word and shown us their tremendous support in this new venture. Thank you also to the well wishes we have received, it really does mean a great deal to us. Meanwhile in Stotfold, we continue to look for ways to support the community and while writing this, are busy preparing to support the imminent Stotfold Festival Week. We love this week and use it to visit as many local groups as we can through the various open days and events on offer. We hope to see as many of you as possible during this week and of course, at the Festival Fete on the Saturday. Speaking of support, we would like to draw your attention to the Ladies ‘Sip & Shop’ evening (advertised just to the left of this column). The Stotfold News Magazine are extremely proud to support this event and to assist these Stotfold ladies as they continue to raise much needed funds for the Garden House Hospice. As you know, this charity is supported by the Stotfold News Magazine as we know first-hand what an amazing place this truly is. If you can come along to this event please do - the ladies work so hard to make these evenings as enjoyable as possible. It would be fantastic if our community could really get behind them and show them their support. We look forward to updating you in our August issue as to how the evening went.

We welcome some new advertisers to our magazine this month and as always, we encourage you to mention where you saw their advertisement if you choose to give them a call. The magazine relies on the support of local businesses, so we actively encourage all of our advertisers to check to see that the magazine continues to do an excellent job for them.

Huge thanks to all of our delivery volunteers, some of whom will be juggling school holidays with delivering our magazine in the coming months. We truly appreciate your help. Until next month..

ry live e D l ecia

In the wake of the excitement from the latest royal delivery, we thought we would share some news with you about a special delivery of our own! The Stotfold News Magazine now has its very own younger sibling, The Arlesey News Magazine. Launched this week, it gives us the opportunity to offer residents of Arlesey a quality, community led magazine through their doors each month.

Inside the magazine we are sharing news from local schools, articles from local conservation groups, family announcements and readers letters. It has been the result of many months of research and requests from Arlesey advertisers and residents to have their very own version of the Stotfold News. Readers in Stotfold will be able to access the magazine online and read it through the link on our facebook page every month. We will also leave a few copies alongside the Stotfold Magazines inside the Stotfold Post-Office. We hope you enjoy it! To advertise your business or to share your news with an extra 3,000 households every month, simply contact us in the usual way and we will do the rest! We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our amazing Stotfold advertisers that have supported us enourmously in this new venture - your support has been so very much appreciated.

Letters to the Editor Dear Joanne,

Stotfold Mill Steam Fair and Country Show.

Having enjoyed my last show after 17 years of helping to arrange the events, I have some fantastic memories and countless ‘thank you’s’ to give. The events team at the Mill spend a great deal of personal time, given at their own expense to create a wonderful event to secure the future of the Mill for generations to come, for Stotfold people and the wider community. Given the present difficult climate we are living in, I believe the event provides something for all to enjoy at a reasonable cost. It is a great credit to all the many volunteers without which the event would not function. On a personal note I feel it is time for the event to take stock and look towards the future, with new blood! Finally, a message to all the volunteers - too many to mention, landowners, the Town Council, Chairman and Trustees of the Mill and lastly, the residents of Stotfold. Thank you. John Hyde.

Dear Editor,

I would like if possible to write a quick response to the letter on page 12 of the Junes edition of the Stotfold News magazine.

I too have slide in fence panels, and was concious that people could slide them up to gain access to my garden. I discovered that fence security brackets are available which link the panels together to prevent lifting (and even the theft of the panels themselves). I am sure that some people would not have thought of this.

An example of the brackets can be found at Toolstation, item number 80360. Kind regards Chris Hall

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

Can I ask readers to bring their attention to the speed limits on Hitchin Road. I walk my young children to the Ruskin Drive site of Fairfield Park Lower School each morning, and whilst I do not carry a speed monitoring device with me, several cars seem to be ignoring the 30 mph zone that begins just before Fairfield Gardens.

The pavements down this road seem to be very narrow, especially when walking with two young children who both wish to hold your hand. I recognise that Hitchin Road probably used to be a bit of a nice way to get the car up to speed, but walking with my children in the morning really does highlight the potential danger of exceeding the limits here. Can I ask that the local residents all observe the speed restrictions, and help slow down the pace of motorists who use the roads? Many thanks A concerned parent - Fairfield Gardens.

6

Dear Joanne,

On Sunday morning 19th May 2019 we noticed that the overflow at the Hitchin Road sewage pumping station was pouring raw sewage into Pix Brook. We called out Anglian Water who responded swiftly and within 10 minutes of their arrival the reason behind this discharge into the brook was found and dealt with. The issue was a ‘mini Fatberg’ in the sewer immediately before the pumps themselves, this blockage was quickly dug out of the pipe and the sewage flow to the pumps resumed, the overflow of raw sewage into the brook then ceased and Anglian Water then set about measuring the water quality in Pix Brook.

We really just want to make people aware of the impact of putting wipes and fat into the sewage system, not only is this causing the inconvenience of the sewer blockage, but also damage to the local environment due to the raw sewage overflow being directly into the brook. Kind Regards Richard and Lynn Allen

News from

Stotfold Watermill

Your Mill, Its Future….. At the beginning of June, a very important meeting was held at Stotfold Watermill that could have been critical to its future. Stotfold residents might have read in the local press reports that this year could be the last time a Steam Fair and Country Show would be held. Some members of the team who have organised the event for the past 17yrs decided to retire and no new volunteers to take on the major organisational tasks were coming forward. The event held in May each year is not only a major attraction in the Bedfordshire calendar, drawing many hundreds of visitors to our town, but it is vital to the future maintenance of the mill. To keep the mill secure and in working condition requires in excess of £30k per year. The event in May, given fine weather, can raise this sum, whilst all the other activities held for the enjoyment of visitors and the enrichment Stotfold’s community only contribute relatively small amounts to the Preservation Trusts funds.

Fortunately, we can report that at the meeting in June between the organising team and the Trustees there was sufficient support to feel that the event will continue next year. In fact, there was enough enthusiasm to suggest that in May 2020 we might look forward to a Country Fair with some new and exciting attractions, although much will depend on attracting more volunteers to help in the planning and preparation stages. If you are willing to give a little of your time each month and are keen seure the future of our town’s biggest annual event as well as its historic mill, please visit our website www.stotfoldmill.com/volunteer to join our very sociable Major Events team. As June comes to a close the mill once again is hosting the Summer Art Exhibition on 28th, 29th & 30th, from 12.305.00pm, featuring over 100 original paintings all by local artists from Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. Later it will be the turn of our local art group to hold their own Summer Art Exhibition on 20th & 21st July from 10.00am – 5.00pm each day. For those of you interested in developing your own artistic skills we are holding a watercolour workshop, led by Paul Fulstone, on 13th July. Details are available on our website and if you find this session has become oversubscribed Paul is running another class on September 28th.

For children between the ages of 5 – 11, we are once again running 4 days of activities during the summer – Pond Dipping, Kitchen Science, Printing Workshop and Skull Island Adventure. Details of these together application forms are available on our website. These activities are usually oversubscribed, even with two sessions a day, but please still DOMESTIC GAS AND HEATING apply for a place on the waiting list. Our congratulations to those responsible for completing the Etonbury Green Wheel, a series of linked footpaths encompassing Stotfold, Arlesey and Fairfield. TEASEL

JULY BULLETIN

Summer is here according to the Met Office, and Teasel has just held its AGM, where we go through the events of the last twelve months. Some of the notable things our volunteers were involved with were: * Helping to build the 2 tonne concrete base for the bird hide. * Hedge laying and typha (bull rush) pulling - typically 5 people were in the water and 4 on the bank. * Planting a tree in memory of Paul Myhill’s mother, who had been a keen Teasel supporter. * Brass rubbing posts with different leaf profiles were placed in meadow 2 in April.

Alongside this, Tim Boughen bought five of the bird boxes not sold at the hide opening and kindly donated them to Teasel. Some have had chicks raised in them this Spring. In other news, Stotfold Nature Reserve has gained another Green Flag award – this makes it every year since 2012. During last Summer’s heatwave, Teasel volunteers helped to water the trees at Etonbury Community Orchard (behind the school and sports centre). Water was hauled up from the nearby Pix Brook and carried back to the trees in buckets. Exhausted volunteers found their own refreshment at the nearby Fox and Duck!

Teasel volunteers tending to the never ending task of keeping our green space tidy.

Magnificent Turnout For Etonbury Green Wheel Launch

Cliff Andrews, together with Stotfold Mayor Alan Cooper, Ann Clarey and Brian Collier.

Many people enjoyed the launch event for the Etonbury Green Wheel at the end of May, The Etonbury Green Wheel is a local walking route shaped as a wheel and developed in response to increase more, better quality walking and cycle routes within the local area. The Etonbury Green Wheel is a joint initiative between Arlesey Town Council, Stotfold Town Council, Fairfield Parish Council, Central Bedfordshire Council, The Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity, TEASEL and ACORN the two local conservation groups within Stotfold and Arlesey.

The official ribbon cutting ceremony, performed by Cliff Andrews from Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity, alongside several local children was extremely well attended with over a hundred people enjoying the walk along the ‘spokes’ of the wheel which includes areas of Arlesey and then in to Stotfold. The main rim of the wheel is just over 10 miles long. Maps detailing the route can be obtained from Arlesey Town Council and were kindly funded by First Step Etate Agents. Caroline Romans, Project Officer from Central Bedfordshire Council told us ‘The Green Wheel allows you to walk for as long or short as you wish in all seasons. We are very fortunate that The Green Wheel has Etonbury Woods at it’s hub, offering free public access to beautiful woodland it provides a perfect focal point for the Green Wheel Communities. The Green Wheel Map

Huge thanks to Roger Watson for leading the walk from Arlesey - we hope many people will enjoy the walks in the future and look forward to watching the local community enjoy all that it has to offer.’ Cliff Andrews from Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity welcomed the launch stating ‘Ultimately we would like the route to be open to cyclists and we are working towards securing landowner permissions and funding to upgrade some paths in order to achieve this. We hope to have the second phase of the Wheel open in a few years time.’

The Green Wheel Route is clearly signposted throughout Arlesey with small signs indicating the direction to travel. Regular Xplorer groups are held for children in the school holidays inside Etonbury Woods and will encompass the Green Wheel in their activities. For details on these groups please see the Stotfold News Magazine facebook page for further updates.Find out how Stotfold lady Sarah Passey got on

as she walked the Green Wheel route for the first time on pages 28 & 29 of this month’s issue.

News from

Roecroft Lower School.

I feel like I have said this every month, however, June really is one of the busiest months of the academic calendar. There has been a huge number of events both in and out of school taking place. Our Year 4 PGL took place. The children go on a residential trip to Caythorpe for two nights and enjoy an array of activities, from archery to raft building. I had the pleasure of driving up and joining the children on the Tuesday. It was truly magical to see them all being so independent and enjoying such a varied range of activities together. The laughter was infectious! A huge thank you to the staff for attending and making it so worthwhile, and also to Miss Aris who organises the event wonderfully every year. Thank you to those of you that attended our Dance Morning, as suspected the ‘Teachers Top Tunes’ selections were very diverse. It made for an eclectic morning of fun and the children performed amazingly - well done one and all! An update from the Key Stage 2 team: What an enjoyable Summer Term we have had! Our year 3 children have enjoyed exploring their new history topic ‘The Mayans’ and kick-started their learning with a fun and exciting topic day. They have linked this with their learning in Geography and have explored the continent of South America. Additionally, in PE they learnt the rules of a traditional Mayan ball game called ‘Pok-A-Tok’. Year 3 have also utilised our excellent Food Technology Room. They followed a recipe for making cheese scones and based upon the delicious scents that flowed throughout the school, I would say they were very successful!

Sporting wise, it has been a very busy few months for year 4! Many children represented Roecroft in Cricket, Swimming and Tag Rugby, and not forgetting our annual Dance Morning and upcoming Sports Day. Additionally, our school gymnastics teams and football teams have trained hard this year and have had the opportunity to take part in tournaments and festivals. These events are always so enjoyable and are a great way to celebrate sporting talent! Our year 4 children also undertook some valuable First Aid Training where they learnt how to do CPR if somebody isn’t breathing and also how to put somebody into the recovery position if they are unresponsive. This was a valuable experience for the children and they have learnt important skills that they can carry throughout their lives. Our Values for July are Courage and Honesty. Thanks for reading, Mrs Cross

Fairfield Park Lower School

Last month was a busy month at Fairfield Park Lower School at both Dickens Boulevard and Ruskin Drive - we had a specialist project engineering week. During the week we were very lucky to have a number of special visitors into school (parents, grandparents, students from other schools) who spent time with different year groups giving talks and or helping the children to complete topic related tasks and projects, classes enjoyed making rockets and planes and launching and flying them for example. Pupils also brought in some splendid models which they had made at home, these were displayed around both the school and our school community was invited to view the exhibition one day after school – some of the fabulous models can be seen in the pictures below. We also had a vertical grouping day where all children were put into mixed groups and spent the day taking part in various engineering activities and projects. Children in Years 3 and 4 also went on a topic related Airbus Trip! We have continued to have a busy month with sporting fixtures for children in KS1 and KS2 and look forward to our sports mornings for all children. Class Assemblies have continued and we look forward to the Year 4 leavers concert in July. Currently, we are working to improve and expand our provision of books at Fairfield Park Lower School. We are asking the local community for donations, so, if you have old, good condition, nearly new, used or second hand books that are no longer being read then please consider donating them to us. Books can be handed at the school office on either site. We are very much looking forward to ‘Fairfield Parks Got Talent’, the children have been practicing each week and they will be ready to take part in what will be a very exciting competition. The parents will be able to enjoy a performance from the winners in each heat on Tuesday 16th July. Quote of the term: ‘The greatest gifts you can give children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence’ Denis Wailey. Value for this half term: Humility Please contact the school office should you require further information on 01462 830000 Some of the models on display Email: office@fairfieldparklower.uk

Etonbury Academy. May has been a testing month here at Etonbury with both SATs and GCSEs. This can prove very difficult for many our students but they really do pull together and support one another, and our community spirit shines through. We have had visitors a plenty in school who are consistently bowled over by the feel and friendliness of our school for which we are very proud.

Our KS2 students have been out and about as they took part in the ‘Big Tidy Up’ litter picking in the surrounding area. Joined by the Mayor of Stotfold and Town Councillors, it was another community project making a difference. Our KS2 boys were awarded runners up at the Kwik cricket tournament, well done to all!

Some of the Year 4s from our feeder lower schools have been participating in a sports event held at Etonbury, already mixing and making new friends. We are delighted to announce that we have Lesley Whittle, our new Head of Juniors joining us in September. She is already working with the Principal on the KS2 curriculum and making plans for refurbishing Etonbury Juniors over the Summer months. Exciting times ahead for our new students and those moving in to Year 6. Over in the main school, the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award students successfully completed their assessed expedition. Our sports talent continues to go from strength to strength with numerous regional winners in athletics, rounders and cricket in these past few weeks. Art have been busy with screen printing, building model shanty houses and year 11s completing their coursework. Check out our EtonburyArt twitter account, they have been sharingpictures of the work our students produce, as well as sharing the envious view across Stotfold and afar from their classroom windows and balconies. Our creative faculty are now preparing for their Summer concert, tickets to be released very soon. Our mathematicians also celebrated with bronze, silver and gold awards in the Junior Maths Challenge with three students Megan, Heidi and Rhys also qualifying for the next round!

Our students have plenty of activities coming up before the end of term including field trips to Cambridge and Clacton, participating in the Bedfordshire Schools choir, Art and Photography exhibition, Silver Duke of Edinburgh expedition to the Peak District and the Woman in Black theatre trip. We have also organised a ‘Race for Life’ event to be held on Friday 14th June for the whole school raising money for Cancer Research. We look forward to updating in the August issue of the Stotfold News Magazine.

News from

St Mary’s CE Academy At the time of writing this it’s early June and Stotfold Festival Week and Fete day are fast approaching so we all really hope the warm weather continues, so that the week is as successful as in previous years. May we take this opportunity to thank all of the local community who partake in Festival Week and/or donated towards the fete and our Grand Draw – this was all very much appreciated. In June our year 2 children really enjoyed a trip to RAF Hendon Museum, our older children undertook African drumming lessons and the whole school enjoyed some dance workshops - fun was had by all!

However, this will all be a memory by the time July Stotfold News arrives on everyone’s doormats.

It’s amazing how quickly July comes round each year, but, being St Mary’s we still have a lot going on before the end of the school year! Our Year 1 children are visiting Stanwick Lakes, our Year 4 children are undertaking their Bikeability Course as well as spending a day at their respective Middle Schools on 5th July. As always, we still have a number of sporting activities going on. Our Cricket Club continues with the finals hopefully being held on Thursday 11th depending on the weather. Once again we must thank Mr Steve Darlow for organising the cricket for us. He is a fantastic supporter of the school and we look forward to some of the children featuring in the England Team in years to come! We also have our annual School Sports Day planned for Wednesday 10th July, again weather permitting. (Reserve date: Thursday 11th July). The SMSA, our parent’s association have organised another Happy Bags collection for Monday 15th so any and all donations are very welcome!

The end of term wouldn’t be complete without our whole School Fun Day on Wednesday 17th, Leavers Talent Show, Barbeque and planned Assembly on Friday 19th, where everyone has chance to reminisce, have fun and wish everyone well for the future.

The new school year begins on Wednesday 4th September. There is a Pop-up Uniform shop available on Tuesday 3rd September from 10.30am to 2.30pm. May we take this opportunity to wish everyone a pleasant Summer.

News from

Central Bedfordshire Academy. Welcome to our update for July.

Following great achievements for our Year 11s in Level 1 and 2 English Functional Skills, we look forward to starting the process with our Year 10 students in the coming weeks. Our Year 9s are studying a GCSE Literature play, 'The Curious Incident of a Dog in the Night-Time' and hopefully seeing a live performance in the next school year. In Key Stage 3, the students are studying an Ian McEwan novel written for children, 'The Daydreamer', where the protagonist, Peter, imagines himself into other identities. We are setting aside our normal curriculum for once this month to run a wellbeing day for staff and studenst to have an in depth look and experience of how we can contribute positively to our own and others physical and mental well-being. Our first crop of peas have been harvested from our horticulture which we will shell and put to good use in our Catering and Hospitality department who with our students continue to support the local Coffee and Cake’ mornings in St Mary’s Church catering for in excess of fifty members of the Stotfold community. Meanwhile our younger construction students produced a table sized ‘Shut The Box’ game for the Captain’s Charity Day at Henlow Golf Club. We would also like to thank the Tesco head office staff who are coming to spend a day with us in July to support us with a myriad of tasks around our school campus as part of their commitment to helping in the wider community.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor,

During an afternoon in May we were having some work done at home when a Blue Tit took rather a liking to one of the workmen!

We thought it was extraordinary that the bird was so tame and so willing to have his (or her) picture taken! We thought it would make a great picture to send into the Stotfold News magazine. We hope you enjoy it! Jean Prutton.

Walking The Etonbury Green Wheel Written for the Stotfold News Magazine by Sarah Passey.

The Etonbury Green Wheel is an 11 mile walk centred on Etonbury Woods that circles through Arlesey, Astwick, Fairfield, and Stotfold. The walk follows established footpaths, including the Kingfisher Path, the Hicca Way, and the Letchworth Greenway. I was pleased to be able to attend the official opening of the Green Wheel in May, walking on a beautiful sunny day from Stotfold Mill to the Fox and Duck with around 100 other people. A few weeks later, I decided to walk the entire route as I had a spare morning and there were a few areas along the route I’d never walked before. I chose to begin the walk at Stotfold Scout Hut, although the Green Wheel can be reached easily from anywhere in the local area, since by its nature it has many “spokes” from the inside to the outside. At my starting point I followed the Kingfisher Path on easy paths suitable for bikes and pushchairs along the River Ivel, through Millennium Meadow and the Riverside park, along Silverbirch Avenue, and out onto Taylors Road. At Ivel Mill, I took the little footpath that cuts through to Bowmans Mill and Astwick. This path is quite narrow and there is a low hanging tree, so it isn’t suitable for pushchairs or bicycles and you need to watch your head! Across the fields to St Guthlac’s Church in Astwick, which is worth a detour, I found the new Green Wheel footpath that takes you to the Fox and Duck. There is an information board in Astwick with interesting facts about the Church and a wildflower meadow. Reaching the Fox and Duck, you are at the entrance to the Woods and all the myriad The Green Wheel - a great route to explore “spokes” I took the footpath along the road to Arlesey Station. Here, the Green Wheel is signposted up onto the A507, with a walk along the busy road to the station exit road and then back to the station. I did follow the path at this point but I wish I’d simply walked through the railway station and over the bridge, since I feel I added at least half a mile to my walk unnecessarily!

At Arlesey Station, the Green Wheel follows the Hicca Way, which runs alongside the East Coast mainline and the River Hiz from Henlow Lakes to Hitchin. This is a beautiful area for local history and wildlife and I thoroughly recommend you visit, if only to look at the Old Bridge and read up about Arlesey Moat.

One example of the stunning views on offer.

Once I passed through the Moat, the path skirted the field edge and became rather undulating; you need to take care where you put your feet, as it is very easy to find a hole and turn an ankle. With a pushchair you would struggle here, and it isn’t suitable for cyclists (you could follow the road from the station down to West Drive and pick up the path again there). The path also is quite sparse on Green Wheel signs along the Hicca Way, but you just need to remember not to cross over the river (guess who crossed the river?). When I reached Arlesey Commons and the wooden bridge (and after checking the map [yes I was a bit lost]), I thankfully found a Green Wheel sign and turned into Arlesey and crossed the railway using the footbridge. At this point (can you guess?) I was in an area I’d never been before! I’ve lived here 12 years and am still discovering “new” places. I walked through the housing estate to the True Briton pub and found the road to the High Street where you cross to West Drive (and back to where I know!). This old road leads to Fairfield Park and is a nice straight path, you can’t go wrong as there are Green Wheel signs pointing the way. At Fairfield, the path follows the outer edge of the estate, on a new shared path for walkers, cyclists, and horses. I enjoy walking here and looking at all the lovely houses, all with their different quirks, although I was also quite tempted to take a “spoke” back to Stotfold by now as I was 8 miles in and feeling tired! At the far side of Fairfield, the Green Wheel is signposted along a grassy bridleway rather than the easy footpath. I choose to walk in dappled shade on a grassy undulating path rather than tread the easy paved route, which if you have a pushchair would be much easier (although less sparking of the imagination)!

Helpful maps with points of interest

At Dickens Boulevard roundabout, the Green Wheel crosses the road and picks up the Letchworth Greenway, which is well trodden and suitable for all users. I followed the Greenway paths until I reached the Grange playpark, then turned towards Norton Road and back to Stotfold. At this point it is a simple walk back along the main road, although I was quite tired by now and ready for my lunch! I enjoyed this walk very much and discovered some new footpaths (new to me) that I would like to explore on a future walk. The Green Wheel is a great way to explore our local area and can be broken down into smaller walks, so you don’t have to walk the full 11 miles in one go like I did!

Sarah.

Luna Animal Rescue - Who are we? Luna Animal Rescue was founded in 2013 and has grown considerably in this time, mainly in the Herts, Beds and Cambs area, but known within animal welfare around the country. We have to date rehomed over 1000 animals, of a wide variety of species, and have assisted in numerous local projects including neuter campaigns and targeting vulnerable populations to assist with animal care in situ where possible. We have, in the last year, begun rolling out an education programme which will consist of a number of different lectures throughout the year, and already held a Dog Law Seminar in Arlesey this year. We intend to roll out more, and would love to engage with the local community regarding both domestic and wildlife and will be hosting talks on both. We fundraise via our own events, attending shows and other hosted events, and via help with our local Pets at Home store in Biggleswade who we are the selected charity partner for. We pride ourselves on being an approachable, helpful team, although overwhelmed at times, from a variety of backgrounds, all with animal welfare and care at heart. We are a registered charity with a non-destruct policy and all animals that are rehomed through us have a lifetime of rescue backup. We currently have around 60 foster families in the local area, and lots of additional volunteers who help with fundraising and transport. If you don’t have time during the week, or can’t help with housing animals, there are so many fundraising events and transport runs over weekends that there’s generally a job suitable for everyone.

Stotfold Bowls Club Host County Match The 29th of May saw Stotfold Bowls Club play host to Middlesex and Bedforshire for the match between these two teams. The photo below is of the Ladies game - It is quite a fillip for the Club to be asked to host a game of this calibre, although lots of work for members. Bowls has been played in Stotfold in or around Brook Street and Regent Street since the 1920's. Stotfold Bowls Club, a hazy amalgamation of Stotfold Social Club and Regent Bowls Club, was established at the current location in 1941. Today, our green has 6 rinks, and we have a modern pavilion (opened 2000) with bar and kitchen facilities. We field several teams in the East Beds & District Bowls League and compete in the Men's County League, as well as playing Mens, Ladies and Mixed mid-week and week-end club matches, and club championships.

Ladies prepare for County Match

Our season runs from April until September, though we do play a few away-from-home indoor fixtures over the winter. For more information contact: 07739 760719

News from Stotfold Junior Football Club For many of our teams the season has now finished with a few friendly matches taking place to fill the gap. One of the last games played this last season was on the 19th May where Stotfold U10 Whites played Stotfold U10 Greys in the Royston Crow league cup final at the Bury in Buntingford. This is the first time two Stotfold teams in the same age group have competed against each other in a final. Both teams produced some fantastic football with the scores level at half time. The Whites team eventually made the important breakthrough with a late goal after an enthralling second half, ending up 2-1 winners. Present Under 11 Amber Team celebrate their season at the presentation event.

During the beginning of June, the Stotfold Junior Teams held their Annual Presentation event which spanned over two days, due to the sheer volume of teams now involved with the club. During the event, each team had the chance individually to commend their team and recognise individual players that had made significant progress throughout the year. Team achievements were also highlighted and sponsors were thanked for their support. It was a well organised event and the clubs would like to thank everybody for the hours of preparation and organisation involved. The weekend was a resounding success and was thoroughly enjoyed by players, coaches and parents alike. The club would like to thank everyone for in ensuring the success of Stotfold Junior Football Club last season and look forward to the year ahead.

Many teams are looking for new players to strengthen their teams for the upcoming season. If your child would like to be part of the area’s largest youth football organisation please visit the club website for further details, email chairman@stotfoldjuniorfc.co.uk or visit the Stotfold Juniors Facebook page. www.stotfoldjuniorfc.co.uk
