News from Stotfold Watermill
It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Pat Clarey, a long-time supporter and Trustee of the Mill. Many of you will remember Pat, either as The Voice of the Tannoy at the Steam Fairs, or else in his many roles around the Mill and the village. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.
On 12th November, the Mill was packed with a keen and enthusiastic audience for “Music at the Mill, ” an evening of swing music from local group Mixology. Offering a mix of musical theatre, pop and classic swing songs, the group kept the audience’s toes tapping and pulses racing, not to mention taste buds tingling with a selection of Mill-themed cocktails. A huge round of applause not only to the performers, but also to the volunteers who helped run the evening and kept the drinks flowing. Music at the Mill was closely followed by a visit from the National Traction Engine Trust (https://ntet.co.uk/), who were holding their AGM locally, and came for a tour of the Mill.
If you’d like to arrange for a tour of the Mill, for a local group or business, please get in touch. There’s even the chance to become a Miller for the day, and learn how to operate the Mill wheel. Some of the team have been busy tidying up the compound by the nature reserve: many thanks to Colin, Robert, Tim and Graham for all their hard work!
And finally, the Mill was pleased to be part of the Christmas Lights Switch On event on 26th November, with a stall selling Mill flour, and jams, chutneys and honey from the shop. It was a wonderful event, very well planned and run by the Town Council, and we were thrilled to be part of the action. It was a great way to end our activities for the year.
So, what does 2023 hold in store for Stotfold Mill?
Well, our first event is on 29th January. We’re holding a volunteer and trustee recruitment day, inviting you to come and see how you can help to keep the Mill running. We are particularly keen to hear from people who would like to sit on our Board of Trustees, helping to manage the Mill and support the volunteer teams who run the open days. Whatever your level of interest, and even if you can only spare the occasional hour from time to time, please do come and join us on the 29th, from 3.00-5.00pm, enjoy a cup of tea and find out what it takes to keep the wheels of history turning.
We’re already hard at work planning for the Steam Fair, which will be on 13th and 14th May 2023. Putting on an event like the Steam Fair is a massive undertaking, so if you have an interest in events, or just fancy taking part in the weekend, please get in touch.
Editors note: We were extremley saddened to hear about the passing of friend to the Stotfold News Magazine, Pat. We will miss his monthly contribution to our magazine and his familiar voice on the tannoy at the Mill events. Our sincerest condolences to his family on their very sad loss.
