From the Editor Welcome to April!
This month we welcome lots of new advertisers and a sprinkling of new features to the publication, fitting nicely with the theme of Spring and new beginnings. We have a double page article featuring some of Stotfold’s incredible Marathon runners for 2026, do look them up and read their stores - there are some truly wonderful causes being supported this year and some lovely background stories to accompany them. We wish them all lots of luck for Sunday April 26th.
We have a fun new feature on page 16 this month where we are asking readers to become our Quizmasters each month - Are you a quiz buff? Do you fancy taking on the challenge for next month? Get in touch with us and we’ll help make that happen! Huge thanks to Dennis for being our Quizmaster for April.
If you, or a loved one own a plot in our local cemetery, then our special feature ‘Grave Matters’ is worth a look. Do you know the legalities behind owning a burial plot? ‘Grave Matters’ forms part of a series of topics we have planned for forthcoming issues - we hope you find them informative and useful.
Our ‘Coffee Time’ feature makes a return this month, alongside an Interview with MP Alistair Strathern, an incredibly topical Business Bulletin, our Competition Corner, Daily Diary & much, much more...
It’s another jam packed issue that’s for sure. Once again, huge thanks to every single person who helps to make this happen!
Until next month...

If you have answered yes to any of the above, then this event is for you!
Antisocial Behaviour
Update From Cllr Veneear
A few weeks ago via social media, Stotfold Town Council requested that residents share their concerns regarding ASB to report back to the Police & Crime Priority Setting Committee, Area 5 (which includes Stotfold.)
Cllr Nigel Veneear attends this meeting on behalf of residents on a regular basis. Thank you to all residents that responded to this appeal. Cllr Veneear now has a substantial list of issues to report on your behalf. The next meeting takes place at the beginning of April. If you have a direct concern regarding ASB in Stotfold, you can contact Cllr Veneear at: cllrnigelvenneear@stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk Please also remember to report non-urgent crime to the Police via 101.
Stotfold Flower Festival takes place on September 12th & 13th and will see St Mary’s Church bloom in to colour. Much like the Christmas Tree Festival, flower arrangements will be displayed inside the church, each with their own creative theme. Exhibitors are invited to use their own ‘prop’ to base their arrangement around, echoing their individual business or local group. Think car tyres, think welly boots, think sports equipment - you get the idea!! If need be, the church can help with the arrangement for you. To get involved, contact Chris Thorne thorne936@googlemail.com to allocate your spot.
All proceeds to be shared between Garden House Hospice and St. Mary’s Church, Stotfold.

Update From
Alistair Strathern MP
After a wet winter, many local roads, including several around Stotfold, are in an especially dire state. Having helped Alistair Strathern MP secure a record increase in Central Bedfordshire’s highways funding from Central Government, we are pushing for action on many roads in Stotfold, including the particularly poor stretch of the High Street, but please do flag any others to my office that you would like me to follow up on. We have also been working closely with the local patient group and Town Council to push for improvements at Larksfield and Arlesey GP practices. While I am glad, we were able to secure investment from the surgery to deliver thousands more appointments, and the new triage system is helping with access, there is clearly more to do. Please continue to share your experiences with my office. For those who rely on local train services, I am pleased to report that we have secured investment in additional drivers and, crucially, new backup signalling. I will be monitoring closely to see the impact this has as it is delivered.

Your LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor, As we move from fresh Spring days into the warmth of Summer many of us will be once again taking to the footpaths. We are lucky in Stotfold to have the paths of Etonbury Green Wheel to explore and take time to breathe. Stop and listen to the sound of bird song high above you. One such bird that fills our local skies with glorious song is the skylark. Cast your eyes upward to see a tiny dot from where the dulcet tones are emanating from. Many may not know this little brown bird when it’s on the ground but its distinctive song will be familiar. Males are highly territorial and use long, fluttering song flights at altitude to demonstrate their quality to would be partners or rivals. Being farmland birds they have hung on to the remaining arable landscapes in
our part of Bedfordshire, they are all classified as Red List species because of the dramatic decline their populations are suffering from loss of habitat. They are ground nesting birds and hide young in the fields as the crops grow.
So, if you are walking your dog please be considerate of wildlife in the fields and keep to the paths and make sure to take note of all the wonderful wildlife and countryside we have around us; appreciate it, care for it and acknowledge how good it makes you feel. Liz Anderson.
Dear Editor, The Choir would like to say a big “Thank You” to Stotfold Town Council for the grant we received at the end of last year. We have now been able to purchase lovely new Music Folders for every member - they will keep the music that we have to borrow, safe and they look really smart with our logo on them.
Look out for our upcoming concert “ A Night at the Opera” on May 16th where we will proudly be using them in public for the first time. Many Thanks Lorna - Stotfold Singers
Dear Editor, As February is always a dreary and depressing month for many of our clients, we always look forward to our yearly get-together with the students from the Academy of Central Bedfordshire. This year it was February 10th and we met in St. Mary's Church Hall. Unfortunately the students were not able to be with us but we still had a very enjoyable lunch meeting up with old and new friends in a lovely warm and friendly atmosphere. . As usual, we also used this opportunity to contribute to the Academy's chosen Charity for the year and this was the 'Place2Be Children's Mental Health Charity, and we were delighted to give the Academy a donation of £150.00. It was a very enjoyable lunch with lots of happy chat and laughter and catching up on all the news. Thanks to everyone who helped make this another special occasion for our clients. Grave Matters Understanding Grave
Ownership and the Exclusive Right of Burial in Stotfold.
As a topic which affects many of our readers and one which we felt would benefit further explantation, we asked Stotfold Town Council Cemetery Officer Sue Ward the ins and outs of burial plot ownership in Stotfold... Grave ownership can often be confusing — especially when people first encounter it during a time of grief. Typically, one family member takes responsibility for purchasing the grave, often with the intention of being buried there themselves at some point in the future. Importantly, what you purchase is not the freehold ownership of the land itself, but the Exclusive Right of Burial for a fixed period — in Stotfold, this is usually 75 years. This right allows the registered owner to decide who may be buried in the plot and to erect or modify a memorial (subject to council approval and regulations).
Even after the owner has passed away, the Exclusive Right remains intact, meaning the family can proceed with funeral arrangements and burial in that plot if space allows. Challenges sometimes arise when family members want to add an inscription to an existing memorial, arrange an additional burial, or make other changes — but the original owner has been buried elsewhere or the ownership hasn't been updated. Because only the registered owner (or their legal successors) can authorise burials or memorial changes, nothing can proceed until the Exclusive Right of Burial is formally transferred and recognised by the Council. The process is straightforward and depends on: • If Probate was granted the Exclusive Right forms part of the deceased's estate and can usually be transferred via the executor(s). • If no Probate was required or no Will existed, we may need additional documentation to identify the rightful
successor(s). If you're concerned about a specific grave's ownership, the first step is to contact Stotfold Town Council. At Stotfold Town Council, we are here to help.
To avoid potential complications later, consider naming the person who will manage your estate (or another trusted family member) as a joint owner while you're still alive by obtaining a transfer form from our offices (we'll need some basic details). Complete and sign it in the presence of two witnesses, who also sign then return the original form to the Council. We'll then update the records accordingly,
Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have questions or need assistance with any aspect of grave ownership or transfers.Contact me at Sue@stotfoldtowncouncil.gov.uk or call 01462 544 779 for further information. For our next issue, we look at the safety of memorials and their upkeep.

Town Council Clerk, Coffee with Stotfold Emma Payne..
Time
This month we chat to Town Council Clerk Emma Payne about what her role involves at Stotfold Town council, together with balancing study and dedicating time to rescue dog Nev.
Emma, you joined the team at Stotfold Town Council back in 2023 as Town Clerk, can you give us a brief outline of what your role involves? My role as Town Clerk is really about making sure the Town Council runs smoothly day to day and that we’re delivering the services and facilities that matter to residents within the constraints that we operate in. That can include anything from supporting councillors with decision-making and managing the budget, to overseeing the maintenance of our parks, play areas, allotments and community buildings. No two days are ever the same!
Your role obviously involves a huge amount of variety what are the biggest challenges you face in your day to day job and how do you overcome these? The biggest challenge is probably the sheer variety that comes with the role. There’s also a balancing act between what the community quite rightly wants to see happen and what we, as a Town Council, are legally required to do behind the scenes. It’s about working together and helping people understand that we’re all ultimately trying to achieve the same thing: a safe, welcoming town that people are proud to live in.
my dog Nev before work every morning, come rain or shine, which gives me a chance to clear my head before the emails. Being outside really helps me reset and reminds me why the work we do matters so much. Outside of work, I'm currently studying for an MA so that's taking a lot of my down time. I am also redecorating our new home and love spending time with my grown-up family.
Finally, If you had to choose just three items to pack in your suitcase for a month on a remote island, (aside from very basic necessities) what would you pack and why? Firstly, definitely a notebook, if I can't take my phone; I’m one of those people who likes to jot things down, whether that’s thoughts, plans or just reflections. I think I’d struggle without somewhere to capture ideas. Secondly, a really good book (or my e-reader). Anything historical or a detective novel, even better if it's a historical detective! And finally, my camera. I love being outdoors and taking images of nature - even if it happens to be a remote island.
Since joining the team almost three years ago what have been your personal highlights to date? It’s hard to pick just a few! One of the biggest highlights has been the delivery of events like Stotfest and the Christmas Lights Switch-On. Whilst residents may not always see it on a day-to-day basis, we’ve also spent time expanding our staff team to ensure that we are able to serve the community much more efficiently.
Emma, what are the three things you love most about Stotfold as a town? Firstly, the sense of community. There’s a real willingness from people to get involved which I love. Secondly, the green spaces which are so important for people’s wellbeing. (I'm keeping fingers crossed that we're successful in our green flag application for the cemetery.) And finally, the fact that Stotfold manages to feel like a close-knit town while still moving forward. There’s a nice balance between respecting its history and being open to change and new opportunities. Emma, we imagine your job can be incredibly intense at times - how do you choose to relax & unwind in your spare time? It can be intense at times, and I am really bad at switching off - just ask the councillors! For me, the most important thing is making sure I start the day well. I walk

The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has had a significant ripple effect across the global travel industry. Periods of instability, particularly following the escalation of heavy fighting, have influenced airline routes, traveller confidence, tourism demand, and operational costs for airlines and tour operators.
One of the most immediate impacts has been on aviation routes. Several major airlines have been forced to reroute flights to avoid airspace near conflict zones in countries such as the UAE, Oman, Israel, Lebanon, Iran and Iraq. The unrest also causes flight complications for people travelling to other countries outside of the conflict zone, as the flight routes use airspace within these areas to pass through. This means holiday makers travelling to countries such as Thailand,Maldives, Australia, India & Mauritius have either been re-routed meaning extensive extra travel time or full cancellation of their holiday. Tourism demand in the region has also declined. Even when conflict is geographically contained, travellers often perceive the wider region as unsafe, which can impact neighbouring destinations. Situations like this highlight the value of booking with a travel advisor rather than relying solely on large online platforms or automated booking systems. When travel disruption occurs, having a real person advocating on your behalf can make a significant difference. Travel advisors work closely with suppliers and ensure bookings are protected through organisations such as ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) and ATOL the UK’S (Air Travel Organiser's Licence) giving travellers greater financial and logistical protection than some online booking sites alone.
At the time of writing this, I personally have a local family from Stotfold currently stranded in Abu Dhabi, and another family about to fly to Dubai. Because I am able to work directly with partners such as Etihad Holidays, we have been actively arranging repatriations and cancellations, and expect our family to return home safely in a few days time.
Many people arrange their holidays using popular on-line booking platforms that only carry the ATOL protection and use automated services to sell holidays, due to this method, the holidays advertised are always cheaper than that of a fully protected package deal with an actual travel agent.
Whilst there is so much conflict going on around us, travellers should remember that the UK government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office provide clear and regularly updated travel advice. While it is important to stay informed, people should try not to panic about future holidays. In many cases travel continues safely with only minor adjustments. If anyone in the community needs help, guidance or reassurance about upcoming trips, I am always here to offer support and advice. Sarah x

Pippin Pre-School We enjoyed welcoming back all our children last month and began March celebrating St David’s Day with Daffodils and Welsh Cakes, followed swiftly by World Book Day and Mother's Day. We were delighted with the safe arrival of our ducklings earlier this month! They arrived in their incubator and hatched during their first 36 hours. The children held them and watched excitedly as they took their first swim!
The ducklings enjoyed their first swim!
We wish to thank all our parents and staff for wearing fantastic costumes to celebrate World Book Day. Fairfield Park Lower School The children in Year 2 and Year 4 enjoyed a wonderful afternoon tea with their parents to celebrate Mother’s Day. They shared cakes, tea and juice together, creating a lovely opportunity to spend some special quality time with one another. It was a warm and joyful occasion, and it was clear how much the children appreciated celebrating with their families.
Our school choir recently took part in the Young Voices Concert at the The O2 Arena, performing alongside around 9,000 other children. It was an incredible experience and a truly memorable day for everyone involved. The performance was spectacular, with the children confidently singing all the songs they had been practising. They were fantastic representatives of our school, shining on stage and demonstrating our school values.
Children across the school were also invited to take part in the Young Artists Summer Show at the Royal Academy of Arts. We saw a fantastic range of creative work, including sculptures, photographs and paintings.
As there was no set theme, the children had the freedom to explore their own ideas and express their creativity in unique and imaginative ways. The results were truly impressive and showcased the wonderful artistic talent within our school. Value of the Half Term: Friendship

Roecroft Lower School We spent the month of March celebrating World Book Day and everything reading, I wanted to share a message I shared with all our families about the wonders and importance of reading. A few minutes of shared reading each day makes an extraordinary difference to a child. Reading at home not only strengthens children’s fluency and comprehension, but also builds vocabulary, imagination and confidence. Just 10–15 minutes of quiet, consistent reading time can have a lasting impact on progress and wellbeing.
This month, we also have an update from Mrs Harrington, our Head of Curriculum: In Year 1, the children have been thoroughly immersed in their topic, “A Knight’s Tale”. A particular highlight has been exploring the story ‘How to Catch a Dragon’. Inspired by the tale, they went on to design and build their very own dragon traps to capture the elusive ‘Roecroft Dragons’, carefully writing clear and detailed instructions so that others could recreate their designs. As part of their Design and Technology learning, the children also created wonderful medieval-themed moving pictures. Meanwhile, Year 2 have been explorintheir topic, “Kings and
reports about animals. They have demonstrated impressive progress — all while drawing on their scientific knowledge from their “Animals and Humans” topic.’

Queens”. They have learned about significant British monarchs including Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria, as well as finding out more about our current Royal Family. The children particularly enjoyed learning about the coronation of Charles III and discussing why this was such an important historical event.
To bring their learning to life, Year 2 took part in a special Design and Technology Day where they planned and prepared their own afternoon tea. Using a range of food preparation skills, they made sandwiches and cakes before sitting down together to enjoy their creations in a celebratory ‘coronation’ afternoon tea.
As the end of term approaches, we are all looking forward to a well-earned Easter break and a chance to recharge. We hope the holidays bring rest, family time and perhaps a little Spring sunshine. When we return, we’ll be heading into what promises to be a very busy and exciting Summer term, including our Year 2 trip to Knebworth Park and a Year 1 visit to Hertfordshire Zoo — both of which we know the children are already counting down to! Wishing everyone in Stotfold a happy and restful Easter break. Thanks for reading, Mrs Cross and the team.

St Mary’s Academy During March we celebrated World Book Day and Red Nose Day where our children dressed up and enjoyed themed activities and competitions both in school and at home. Our Year 3 children took part in a Faith Tour to Bedford which was not only educational but a really cultural day for them. Our parent’s association the SMSA held a successful adult Quiz Night and a Mothers and Others Day event where the children could select flowers/plants for their mums, grandmothers etc. Not only do these events provide lots of fun in our community but the money raised enhances both the education and experience for our children. We are hoping some of the funds raised will help towards more IT
resources for the children to enjoy! They will also be organising another Happy Bags collection on Monday 27th April.
On Wednesday 25th March to Friday 27th March our Year 4 children attended their residential ‘Rock UK’ trip, an adventure packed, exciting and educational one for all involved. Historically our Year 4’s have always thoroughly enjoyed themselves and really benefited from the whole experience. During April they will also be learning bicycle skills! Please see our website for more information and pictures on these fun events. Due to the two week break, April is a relatively quiet month for us. Our last day of term before Easter is Friday 27th March and we included all of the
children in some fun Easter activities outside in the brighter weather as well as an Easter Service at St Mary’s Church.
Following the Easter holidays, the children will return to school on Tuesday 14th April.
Until our next instalment we wish you all a very pleasant Easter break.

Pixbrook Academy Pix Brook Academy: A Month of Inspiration, Opportunity, and Exceptional Student Achievement
Fostering a Lifelong Love of Learning The past month has been a whirlwind of fantastic opportunities, perfectly showcasing our students' enthusiasm. Our recent World Book Day celebrations were a magnificent highlight! The school was awash with super and varied outfits from both staff and students, kicking off with a wonderfully well-attended book breakfast. KS2 students threw themselves into a vibrant whole-school assembly, engaging themed lessons, and a highly popular 'Book Tasting' experience in our Library, alongside quizzes and competitions galore. The phenomenal engagement from our young people was a joy to witness. This thirst for knowledge naturally extended into our personal development programs in KS2. Recently, we brought the wonders of the universe and the excitement of experiments right to our doorstep, welcoming a visiting Planetarium and the Fab Science team to spark curiosity and awe among our students.
Preparing for the Future Together As an academy, we are deeply committed to ensuring our students are fully prepared for their next steps in the wider world. Our Year 11 students recently stepped up to the mark during a highly successful Careers and Mock Interview Day, demonstrating remarkable maturity, focus, and ambition for their futures.
We also recognise that educational success is a true partnership with our families. To support this, we recently hosted a welcoming Year 11 coffee morning, providing a collaborative space for families to learn how to best support their children at home during the upcoming exam season. By working together, we ensure our young people remain perseverant, focused, and resilient when facing challenges.
Expanding Horizons Beyond the Classroom Our commitment to student development extends far beyond the traditional classroom setting. Over the past month, our students have broadened their horizons on a thrilling school Ski Trip, building independence and teamwork on the slopes. We also took a group of enthusiastic students to the NEC to watch elite, professional badminton, inspiring our own aspiring athletes.
Closer to home, our students have maintained a remarkably positive and competitive spirit, representing Pix Brook Academy in simply too many sporting fixtures to count! And our Year 6 pupils completed their Geography field trip to The Pix river.
The past month is just a snapshot of the incredible educational experiences our students engage with every single day. We are immensely proud of them and cannot wait to see what these remarkable young people will achieve next.

News from Stotfold Junior Football Club Stotfold U9 greys had a really good month in February 3x wins and 1 loss but the loss was on the end of a defeat where the best team didn’t get the result they deserve!! Goal scorers this month was Maverick E x9, Barney S x4 with player of the match performances to Milo T, Harrison B, Maverick E, Teddy B, Barney S.
Stotfold U9 Greys, on great form this season, enjoying some fantastic football.
Recently, Stotfold Greys had a very competitive match against Stevenage’s Fairlands U9 Greens who were a well established side. We are pleased to say we overcame them to win 2-0. A clean sheet and two great goals from Keighnan F and Barney S and a very good performance from the whole team.
Our parents voted for Theo E for their player of the match and coaches player went too Maverick E. We’re looking forward to the rest of the season with these great lads.
If there are any experienced young players looking for a new challenge then we are always plased to hear from you please contact Jake on 07939301388

April at Our Church April is always a joyful and hopeful time in the life of the Church as we celebrate the great festival of Easter. After the quiet reflection of Lent, Easter reminds us of the wonderful message at the heart of our faith – that through the resurrection of Jesus Christ we are offered new life, hope, and renewal. Everyone is warmly invited to join us for our Easter Service on Sunday 5th April at 11:15am. This special service will be a time of celebration as we gather together in worship, prayer, and thanksgiving for the risen Lord. Whether you come every week or are visiting for the first time, you will receive a very warm welcome. On the 12th April, 3pm to 5pm we look forward to celebrating our Feast Day, when we will be holding our Cream Teas in St. Guthlac’s Mede. A marquee will be in place so that we can gather together whatever the weather. It will be a lovely opportunity to enjoy good company, delicious cream teas, and time together as a community. Do come along, bring friends and family, and help us celebrate. To reserve a place, please call Julie on 07809 176379 April is a month that reminds us of light after darkness and joy after waiting. The Need Project Update
For April’s update we hear from Ellie, the Project Director for the Need Project.
February proved to be a particularly challenging month, with a number of vehicle related issues impacting our operations. However, through God’s provision and the dedication of our exceptional team, we were able to continue delivering our services effectively.
During the month, we distributed 610 parcels and 400 topup bags to households across the community. Our activity levels remain in line with projections, with January slightly exceeding February’s figures due to the 5-week month, as anticipated. We expect demand to increase again for March and April. The chapel continues to serve as an excellent workspace, and we are extremely grateful for the opportunity to make it our new home. It has already proven to be a valuable base for our work.
This is my first report since stepping into the role of Project Director. I am thoroughly enjoying being part of the project and look forward to seeing how it continues to develop in the months ahead and where God takes us.

We remain in prayer for guidance and provision as we move towards Phase 2 of the building works, with the aim of developing the upstairs of the Methodist Church into a dedicated community space. We give thanks to God for his continued grace and provision for the project. Until next month, Ellie

The White Swan Pub, High Street. Below is a photo of a beer bottle found by a resident in Stotfold High Street. Her house is built on the site of the White Swan Public House and the bottle is a nice piece of local history. The pub was demolished in 1915 and she would love to be able to find a photo of it for display. Can anyone help? We are aware of the booklet on Stotfold Pubs which we have a copy of - alas, this pub is missing a photograph. Can you help us to obtain one? Please get in touch if you can help!
The bottle found in the garden on the High Street.
War Grave Number 6: Inspired by the recent article regarding the Stotfold War Graves, when doing my Fairfield delivery round yesterday my sister and I thought we’d search out the sixth Stotfold War Grave. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists it as Stotfold, Three Counties Asylum I understand, came under Stotfold at that time, hence the listing. I attach a photo and you can see that it’s well maintained. The grave is that of Sierzant (Sergeant) Antoni Gajewski, Service Number P/780790, Polish Air Force (PAF) who died at the hospital and was laid to rest in the grounds. Michael Barnett.
Editors Note: There is a wonderful piece of research connected to this grave which was undertaken by Stotfold resident Stephen Mckenna MBE. If you are interested in finding out more, a simple Google will lead to you his article. You can read about how Stephen played a vital role in correcting the date on this particular war grave.
