that shared experiences can become family traditions. I had the privilege of spending time with Subha, a matriarch whose perspective on family, travel, and what the Club has meant to her left me inspired. I was also reminded of the Brian McDonalds, who met on a Club trip because they shared the same name and now, years later, find themselves experiencing the world together with their families. Community, it turns out, travels remarkably well.

Then there was my daughter. I watched Eleanor head off to camp for her third year with the same bunkmates.

Watching those friendships deepen reminds me that traditions often begin in the smallest moments. Those girls are helping shape who she’ll become, just as my oldest friends helped shape me. Now we’re off on a mother-daughter adventure through Europe with one of our favorite mother-daughter pairs. Years from now, she probably won’t remember the museums or hotels. I hope she’ll remember how it felt to explore the world together.

I spent a few days at Montage Healdsburg with my lifelong friends—the kind who knew you before careers, children, and calendars that now require military-level coordination just to find a free weekend. We visited several of the Club’s wine partners, met people, enjoyed wines, and experienced something that feels increasingly rare: uninterrupted time together. It reminded me that this is what great travel gives us. Years later, what we remember is rarely the room or the view. It’s the dinner that lasted longer than anyone expected. The person you met by chance. The stories that somehow get better every time they’re told.

I felt the same thing aboard our Once-in-a-Lifetime Baltic voyage with Seabourn. Nearly 600 Members traveled together, but what stayed with me wasn’t the scale. It was the relationships. I thought about the Berry family, whose travels with the Club now span generations—a reminder

The destinations will change. The experiences will evolve.

But I hope the essentials endure: a curiosity to see more of the world, the joy of gathering around a table with people you love, and the understanding that the best memories are created together. Perhaps that is the real power of legacy. It isn’t preserving everything as we found it. It’s creating something meaningful enough that the next generation wants to carry it forward— and giving them the freedom to make it their own.

After all, the best things we inherit aren’t the things we keep. They’re the things we continue.

he journey of every drop of Clase Azul begins long before it reaches the brand’s iconic ceramic decanters. It all starts in the red soils of Los Altos de Jalisco, where a special agave—Weber blue—matures for roughly six years before it’s ready for harvest. Preserving the character of that agave is the guiding principle behind every decision that master distiller Viridiana Tinoco makes.

Tinoco approaches fermentation—the first step after the agave harvest—with the precision of an engineer and the palate of a distiller. It’s here, she says, that the majority of the spirit’s aromas begin to develop, making careful temperature control essential to coaxing bright, fruitforward notes from the agave while minimizing undesirable alcohols. “If the temperature gets too high, fermentation is faster,” she says. “But you can also develop undesirable alcohols—the ones that contribute to a hangover.” That pursuit of purity continues through distillation, where the “heads” and “tails”—the portions containing undesirable alcohols—are carefully separated, leaving only the heart of the spirit.

Aging requires an equally thoughtful approach. Tinoco periodically tastes each barrel as the tequila matures, monitoring how the wood shapes the spirit before overseeing the final blending process to achieve the balance of aroma, color, and alcohol that defines each expression.

Rather than allowing oak to dominate, she relies on previously used American whiskey barrels for the core collection, while limited-edition releases send her farther afield, traveling to distilleries and wineries to sample the spirits that once filled barrels of scotch, cognac, wine, and Japanese whisky before selecting the casks she believes will best complement the tequila. “I want the tequila to express—not be overwhelmed by—the barrel,” she says.

“The barrel is a companion for the tequila.”

Clase Azul’s iconic ceramic decanters are another product of painstaking precision. Handcrafted by Mexican artisans, each vessel takes approximately seven days to complete, from molding and drying to hand-painting and finishing.

Like the liquid contained within, every detail reflects a balance of technical mastery and human touch. “It’s a product of science, yes, but also intuition and artistry,” Tinoco says. “That’s the spirit of everything we do.”

I

’ve never been a good sleeper. Several nights a week, my eyes flutter open at around 3 a.m. and thoughts stampede into my brain like shoppers at a ’90s-era Black Friday sale. Even the exhaustion of raising a small child hasn’t affected these wake-ups, which have been an intermittent feature of my nighttimes for as long as I can recall.

I’m certainly not alone. Between 50 and 70 million Americans report chronic sleep disorders or disturbances, and as wearable health devices like the Oura Ring become more popular, our awareness of how tired we are has only increased. So has our desire to find a fix. As the elusive perfect night’s rest becomes the ultimate self-care flex, some high-end hotels have begun offering treatments and experiences designed to enhance their guests’ slumber.

Sleep tourism runs the gamut from pillow menus and spa treatments to multi-night retreats overseen by medical experts. While some hotels utilize holistic, sometimes unorthodox approaches (Miraval Arizona Resort & Spa’s integrative adult sleep coach, Leah Ann Bolen, leads “dream manifestation” workshops and sleep rituals), others are scientific, clinical, and personalized, attempting to target the root causes of sleep disturbances and deliver lasting improvements. With the cost of sleep-themed stays often stretching to more than $1,500 per night, I had to wonder when such a basic biological necessity became a luxury.

The idea of high-quality sleep as something aspirational— and perhaps even indicative of social status—is fairly new.

“Over the last two decades, we’ve seen an enormous rise in interest in health,” says Rebecca Robbins, MD, assistant professor at Harvard Medical School’s Division of Sleep Medicine. “The narrative had almost been that diet and exercise would be privileged at the cost of sleep, and finally we’re waking up to the vital importance of sleep.”

Without sufficient rest, she adds, we’re less able to regulate our mood and appetite, have less energy and stamina for

exercise, and are more prone to developing mental health issues. Being chronically tired can have even bigger health impacts over time, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, depression, dementia, and even a shorter lifespan.

Despite our growing awareness that good sleep is foundational to good health, the pace of modern life continually thwarts our attempts at rest. “In our alwayson, 24/7 society, getting a good night’s rest requires all the more self-regulation,” says Robbins, who has herself led several sleep retreats. Robbins’s guests are typically affluent, corporate types “on the verge of burnout.” But her research shows low-income populations struggle with sleep the most, due to increased exposure to environmental sleep disruptions and financial pressure. “I don’t like framing sleep as a luxury,” she says, noting that there’s an opportunity for hotels at all price points to make better sleep a focus. “The priority should be empowering people at every socioeconomic level with basic sleep hygiene and simple, evidence-based relaxation tools.”

The barriers to sleep are myriad, but perhaps the most pervasive, regardless of socioeconomic status, is stress. To help calm guests’ overstimulated nervous systems and busy minds, some hotels have turned their spas into slumber sanctuaries. At Banyan Tree resorts, the Sleep Essentials Massage combines relaxation techniques and natural remedies to calm the body and mind, while The Peninsula hotels’ 120-minute Sleep Ceremony has guests wind down with a guided breathwork meditation in an aromatic bath, followed by a hot stone massage, facial, and snoozeinducing scalp massage.

These pampering experiences are perfect for a one-off wind-down, but spending an hour or two in the spa is unlikely to reverse long-term burnout. For travelers in search of a truly restorative vacation, a multi-night stay encompassing holistic sleep treatments, mindfulness practices, and innovative technologies is more promising.

At Carillon Miami’s four-night Sleep Well Retreat, guests sleep on Bryte Balance Smart Beds, which adapt to the body and automatically eliminate pressure points, rock guests to sleep with synchronized motion and audio (like a Snoo bassinet for adults), and track sleep quality.

Alongside other typical health retreat amenities like hydrotherapy pools and fitness classes, guests can also try Carillon’s touchless sleep circuit, which encompasses a meditation pod, salt bath floatation therapy, and a treatment known as VEMI, which combines vibroacoustic, electromagnetic, and infrared therapies to balance the body’s systems.

In Salzburg, Austria, Rosewood Schloss Fuschl offers a two- or three-day holistic sleep program that combines spa treatments, breathing exercises, guided meditations, aromatherapy, and personalized fitness activities with sleep hygiene workshops and a sleep-friendly food menu.

A highlight of the program, the OTO Sleep Soundly Experience, uses high-dose CBD oil, warm stones, craniosacral therapy, and sound healing to release tension and reset circadian rhythms.

If you live and die by your Oura Ring data, Equinox’s Sleep Lab—four technology-infused rooms that, according to the New York City hotel, “transform sleep into precision science”—will allow you to geek out over every aspect of your nightly rest. From $1,700 per night for a two-night stay, guests can try out a suite filled with state-of-theart sleep gear. There’s an adaptive mattress that adjusts temperature to suit each stage of sleep; personalized sleep and wake automation that alters the room’s temperature, lighting, and sound 30 minutes before the guest’s chosen wake or sleep time; a steam room and ice shower; in-room soundscapes, meditations, and research-based rituals; and a sleep kit including an eye mask, magnesium patch, and the hotel’s Power Down tea, a blend of herbs, nervines, and flavonoids designed to aid digestion and relaxation. Each morning, a bedside device displays guests’ sleep data, which they can voluntarily submit to the Equinox sleep study. I

imagine this is how Bryan Johnson, the wealthy biohacker who has dubbed himself “the most measured man in history,” and who maintained a 100 percent sleep score for eight solid months, spends each night.

Katie Tardif, head of marketing and communications for Equinox Hotels, explains the thinking behind the brand’s focus on sleep, saying, “Hospitality has historically layered wellness onto hotels through treatments, amenities, and experiences, but we approached sleep more like engineers than hoteliers. Every intervention had to answer one question: Does this meaningfully improve the biological conditions required for restorative sleep? If the answer wasn’t supported by evidence, it didn’t make the program.”

For people like me, who can only dream of achieving a 100 percent sleep score, finding a sustainable fix for stubborn sleep issues might require a more in-depth approach. That’s where SHA Wellness Clinic, which has locations in Spain and Mexico, comes in. For an additional $1,850, guests can add a Sleep Well Pack to any of SHA’s wellness programs. “We approach sleep as a reflection of a person’s overall health, not as an isolated issue,” says Alejandro Bello, MD, one of the clinic’s Internal Medicine Physicians. “Through an integrative medical assessment, we identify the factors that may be disrupting the natural sleep rhythm. From there, we design personalized treatments and recommendations that help restore the sleep cycle, while giving guests the tools to continue improving their rest once they return home.”

It all sounds so appealing—the idea of cocooning yourself in a soothing space and being transformed into a “good sleeper” by doctors and scientists. But the reality is, I already know what would help. Some issues are easily fixed by changing habits, like turning off screens before bedtime. Others, such as managing the mental strain of working, studying for a master’s degree, and parenting a small child, would require a complete overhaul of my lifestyle and personality. Is there a retreat for that?

It’s just something to project your feelings on.” Pointing to the palm of his hand as if it were a phone, he says: “It’s about whether you can project your desire onto this flat surface—whether the photo is ‘real’ or not. Who cares?”

Artists, gallerists, dealers, curators, and other members of the art world are increasingly invested in the answer.

With the rise of AI and the agentic platforms that give us the tools to harness it—to build websites, do the household shopping and, yes, make art—creators are being forced to grapple with uncomfortable questions about the value, and the future, of their medium.

Increasingly, though, experts caution against framing the conversation as a binary debate pitting AI against human authorship. Arun Kakar, a senior art market editor at the online marketplace Artsy, says that mindset risks “flattening what is a more interesting story about how artists are actually engaging with AI. Many are going beyond using AI as simply a generator. They’re interrogating it, pushing back against it, using it as a collaborator.”

The most fully realized example of that collaboration may be Dataland, the Museum of AI Arts, a first-of-itskind cultural institution that opened in June in architect Frank Gehry’s The Grand LA complex, in downtown

Los Angeles. Dataland was founded by Refik Anadol and Efsun Erkiliç as a “living museum,” where immersive installations evolve through the convergence of data and human presence. The inaugural exhibition, Machine Dreams: Rainforest, features interconnected displays powered by Refik Anadol Studio’s Large Nature Model, an AI system trained on ecological data sourced from 16 rainforest locations, most notably the Brazilian Amazon, where Anadol and Erkiliç spent time with the Indigenous Yawanawá people. The experience spawned an eight-minute, AI-generated film centered on a glass hummingbird that plays in the museum’s Infinity Room.

Anadol was among 20 artists whose work appeared in Augmented Intelligence, a controversial spring 2025 auction at Christie’s made up solely of art created with AI. Despite protests—including an open letter with more than 6,000 signatories urging the house to cancel it—the sale beat expectations, with Christie’s earning more than $728,000.

That same year, Art Basel in Miami Beach debuted its Zero 10 initiative, a new curated platform dedicated to digital art and new media.

Outside of these forward-thinking efforts, however, most makers and purveyors of traditional, human-made art see AI’s impact on the art world being limited to less creative endeavors. Joey Lico, a Los Angeles–based curator, predicts the technology will, for the foreseeable future, be integrated primarily “on the administrative side.” Managing workflows, research, writing, communications—the tasks Lico describes as “the operational load that underpins cultural organizations.”

In Lico’s opinion, AI poses little threat to the people making art IRL. “AI doesn’t generate anything in a vacuum; it relies on human prompts, human training data, and human intention. The narrative that machines are somehow replacing artists feels a bit speculative to me.”

It’s also nothing new. Digital art—as Glenn Adamson, a curator, writer, and historian based in New York and London, points out—has been around for decades. “The current exhibition New Humans at the New Museum in New York City has some fascinating early experiments with computer-generated poetry which date back to the 1960s,” says Adamson, who serves as artistic director for Design Doha, a biennial in Qatar, and curator-at-large for the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany. “While it’s conventional to treat AI-generated art as a recent phenomenon, it would be more accurate to view it as the latest development in a long series of artistic experiments with technology.”

For Steven Sacks, founder of bitforms gallery in New York City, which has offered cutting-edge digital art for the past 25 years, the current status of AI-generated art is part of a well-established continuum. “Manfred Mohr, one of our artists, is 87. He was one of the pioneers of using code in the creation of his work,” Sacks says. “But the early artwork that came from code was typically physical. In the early 2000s, generative art started to be seen on the computer because the computers were more powerful and the screens were getting better. Again, it wasn’t AI, but it was softwaredriven art.”

At the 2026 Art Basel in Switzerland, Sarah Rothberg and Rafael Lozano-Hemmer—two artists Sacks represents— had work featured in Zero 10. For the gallerist, today’s AI is both an efficiency tool and a creative partner. Still, he acknowledges that the broader art world has legitimate concerns about people “cranking out some interesting graphics and images that get popular on social media” and threatening the established order.

“It’s complex because someone can create something great and they may not be a great artist. Whereas prior to this, you did have to be a great artist most of the time to make

a thought-provoking, powerful work,” Sacks says. “AI can produce some special things, even if you’re just a random person who puts in a really clever prompt.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time the art community has had to grapple with outsiders disrupting its value system. Case in point: the pandemic-fueled NFT (“nonfungible token”) craze of 2021, when Mike Winkelmann, a little-known digital artist who goes by the name Beeple, sold an NFT of his work for $69 million at Christie’s.

Sacks recalls that period as having had a truly negative impact on his business. “Artists who didn’t exist before made tens of millions of dollars overnight,” he said. “My artists, who’ve been practicing for 30, 40, 50, 60 years, weren’t making a fraction of that. I don’t think it was substantiated.

I think it was insane.”

While the crypto collapse of May 2022 ended the NFT frenzy, Sacks says there’s an interesting footnote to the story: “The good thing that came out of it was much more recognition of media art and software art having value,” he says. “Millions of people heard about it. Prior to that, it was a really tiny audience.”

Today, Beeple and other NFT-makers have joined the traditional art ecosystem—a sure sign that artists, whether they embrace AI or not, still need the blessing of the community’s established arbiters. “They want to be in galleries and museums, they want to be in art fairs, versus having their stuff traded on the blockchain,” Sacks says.

The AI onslaught has spawned another result, adds Lico: the potential to make purely human authorship increasingly valuable. “As technology becomes more pervasive, people may place greater importance on works that embody lived experience, embodied knowledge, and the complexities of being human,” she says.

Rebekah Bowling, senior specialist and head of 21st-century art at Phillips in LA, has already seen a rising appreciation for craft among buyers, perhaps signaling the beginnings of an AI pushback. “Think about Olga de Amaral, the Colombian textile artist whose market is surging since her show at Cartier Foundation two years ago in Paris,” Bowling says. “There’s this real interest in her technique. It’s rooted in craft and weaving.

“People are really interested in works where the narrative is important,” Bowling adds. “I think about the Aboriginal artists who were the focus of the last Venice Biennale; this return to the handmade, the craft tradition, and the interest in the narrative in art. People want a story as a reaction against all of this AI slop, for lack of a better word.”

Bowling, like Kakar of Artsy, says the most compelling thing about art in the age of AI is the way a generation of artists weaned on technology is now riffing on the topic in their work. Consider Emma Webster, a British American painter who uses VR technology to construct otherworldly landscape paintings. Or the American Avery Singer, whose paintings, represented by uber-gallery Hauser & Wirth, reflect the convergence of traditional and digital techniques such as computer-controlled airbrushing. Or Christine Wang, a San Francisco–based painter whose work comments on internet-generated memes.

“It’s a tradition rooted in pop art where artists are making commentary on the proliferation of images and commodification and advertising,” Bowling says. “You’re seeing really interesting commentary from contemporary artists, painters, sculptors, and 3D imaging, too. It’s like, ‘How far can I push the limits of this technology?’”

For many people in the small and insular established art world, the answer is: only so far as the gatekeepers let you.

Adamson, for one, remains steadfast in his refusal to give AI-generated art equal status to the human-made.

“People always have been—and I hope always will be—our primary concern,” he says. “I like to say that we don’t think Usain Bolt is slow just because he can’t outrun a bicycle.

Just because paintings and sculptures can be made quickly or differently by a machine doesn’t mean we will stop thinking of art as an essentially human endeavor. To me, the artworks, songs, and other cultural artifacts being generated entirely by AI are little more than novelties.”

Bowling, too, thinks the art world’s longstanding barriers— such as the need for artists to be represented by galleries— will keep AI in its rightful place. “As long as the gatekeepers keep on keeping, we’re not in too much danger,” she says.

It’s reassuring to think that the existential threat of AI could be neutralized by something as straightforward as access (or lack thereof). And yet, if we’ve learned anything over the four years since OpenAI released ChatGPT, it’s that technology can and will morph faster than we think.

For now, only one thing is certain: As artists and machines become more closely linked, the essential question posed

by Li’s digital puppet in Screen Melancholy—does it matter whether art is “real” or “fake”?—will take on greater resonance than ever before.

American Storyteller Could Ken Burns be our greatest living historian? The legendary director lets The Club in on the secrets of good filmmaking, and the power of a long morning walk.

Even his 2009 Emmy-winning The National Parks: America’s Best Idea is, at its heart, a film about history. Viewers assumed they would be watching a travelogue or nature documentary, Burns says, but in fact, the series was an examination of the origins of the park system—essentially the Declaration of Independence applied to our vast and varied landscapes. The film reached more than 33 million viewers and helped reignite a national love affair with the parks themselves.

Burns’s most recent project, The American Revolution, is a six-part, 12-hour documentary about the struggle to found our nation. He spent nearly a decade making the $30 million series, and released it just months ahead of America’s 250th anniversary— timing that he says was completely coincidental.

The week it premiered, the documentary logged 565 million streaming minutes, landing PBS, Burns’ longtime broadcasting partner, on Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming list for the first time ever. Here, the filmmaker shares insights into his creative process, his sources of inspiration, and the projects he’s working on next.

f you think history is boring, you clearly don’t know Ken Burns. The filmmaker has produced documentaries on topics ranging from baseball to Ernest Hemingway, jazz, and the national parks. His works take a deep dive into the dramas behind American iconography, culture, and conflicts, turning even the most casual viewer into a history obsessive. “With each film, I’m asking a simple question: Who are we?”

Burns says. “Who are those complicated people who call themselves Americans?”

You’ve created films on the Civil War, the Second World War, and the Vietnam War. What prompted you to tell the story of the American Revolution?

In the opening sequence of episode one, I say that this is the most consequential revolution in history. All human events are complex, but this one was particularly complex. I started working on the film in December 2015, while I was finishing The Vietnam War. The Revolution was a divided time. While working on the film, America was facing division. History gives you perspective.

People today say, “Oh, we’re so divided,” but we were way more divided then. Our origin story as a country is dark, but it’s also a story of unity. I hope it underscores the idea that democracy and citizenship are not passive.

of their scholarship is reflected in the film and allowed for a triangulation of diverse points of view, without subscribing to a particular historiography. It served as a reminder that the Revolution meant different things to different people, and still does.

What is the secret to making a good film?

These films take place in the editing room. Making a film is a subtraction process. We collected 400 hours of footage and had to distill it down to 12. You have to take something out to make it better. And we never stop researching. To the consternation of our sound editor, we changed what we thought were finished films hundreds of times when we found new information, to make sure we were accurate.

How do you make a compelling documentary with no photographs, no newsreels, no living witnesses?

What drew you to making historical documentaries?

It required a massive amount of archival research.

Photography hadn’t been invented during the American Revolution, so illustrations, paintings, and sculptures served as the main visual record to bring characters to life. I assembled a team of researchers who created an archive of more than 18,000 maps, engravings, paintings, journals, and documents collected from nearly 350 galleries, libraries, and museums. I’m known for my editing technique, now nicknamed the “Ken Burns effect,” that brings static images to life by applying slow camera panning. But we also shot hundreds of actors costumed as soldiers, blacksmiths, farmers, and sailors, with drones and on the ground, across the 13 colonies, to complement the archival footage. We also enlisted an all-star cast of voice actors, including Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, and Morgan Freeman, to read first-person testimonies from some 150 historical characters.

I knew I wanted to be a filmmaker at age 12. By age 18, I knew I wanted to make documentaries and, by 22, historical documentaries. The last time I took a history course was 11th grade. I loved it.

What future projects are you working on?

I have two production teams and am often working on two to three projects at a time. I’m like a bee, pollinating one thing and then moving to the next.

I’ve been working on the history of [President Lyndon B. Johnson] and the Great Society, and also the Reconstruction, which I believe is the most misunderstood period in American history. I’ve also completed eight two-hour interviews with Barack Obama over the last six years and have probably two more to go. That series will be a multi-part biography on him, along the same lines as my series on the Roosevelts and Muhammad Ali. Can you tell me about your creative process?

The series featured opinions and perspectives from more than a dozen scholars. Why was it important to include such a diversity of voices?

EDGARDO GONZALEZ

Off camera, we spoke to about 24 scholars from three generations. On camera, 18 were featured, including best-selling author Stacy Schiff and Yale historian Ned Blackhawk. We were interested in their opinions at every juncture. We’d invite them to screening after screening. The complexity

I live in the tiny village of Walpole, New Hampshire, and go on long walks in the early morning. I did three miles today. I’ve written letters and poems, and fixed scenes on those walks.

Nature is perfect. Humans are not. Nature holds up a window to its perfection, planting seeds of inspiration. That mirror reflects back facts good and bad about you, and if you’re willing to look into it, it’s amazing.

What could convince a lifelong snowboarder to take up downhill skiing? After decades of resistance, it was the allure of Deer Valley that finally converted me. The Utah mountain resort is one of just three in the U.S. with a strictly enforced skiers-only policy. It’s also known for impeccable grooming, a top-tier ski school, outstanding hotels and restaurants, and sky-high levels of customer service, both on and off the mountain. As businessman Edgar Stern put it when he founded the Utah ski resort in 1981, “If you don’t go first-class, don’t make the trip.”

For years, my ski-aficionado friends would ditch me to go on their annual Deer Valley pilgrimage, then come home raving about the mountain’s crowd-free slopes and over-the-top amenities. To experience it for myself, I would have to finally learn to ski. Last winter, the resort’s expansion gave me the perfect excuse to book a trip—and three days of lessons with one of the ski school’s private instructors.

In 2023, Deer Valley announced an ambitious multiyear upgrade, thought to be the largest resort expansion in the history of modern skiing.

When completed, it will encompass 5,500-plus skiable acres across 10 peaks, served by 37 lifts.

Since December 2024, the ski mountain has already more than doubled in size, with a new gondola and 10 new lifts. By the 2026–2027 winter season, it will offer 4,500 skiable acres and more than 200 runs.

At the heart of the project is Deer Valley East Village, essentially a whole new resort. This base area will eventually be home to nine hotels, more than 40 shops, around 30 restaurants, and North America’s largest ski beach—a large, slopeside area made for socializing, which will extend a half mile across the base of the slopes.

East Village’s location, alongside Route 40 in Heber Valley, is designed to ease traffic in Park City; its new 10-passenger express gondola, which whisks skiers toward Deer Valley’s new highest point, 9,350-foot Park Peak, has already shortened lift lines.

My visit last winter was perfectly timed to experience some of the highlights of Deer Valley’s expansion, including the East Village Express. My verdict? Stern would be proud to know his resort is continuing to deliver on his first-class promise. Read on for the best of what’s new—and what’s still to come.

For beginners like me, Deer Valley already had plenty of green slopes, but 2022 saw the completion of a $6 million upgrade to its learning area, including a new surface lift layout that allows novice skiers to practice without needing to use a chairlift. Once they master their “pizza and french fries,” they can ride the new Burns Express, a high-speed chairlift, giving them access to some of the easiest green runs on the mountain.

Deer Valley already has plenty of black diamond runs, but the expansion gives hard-charging skiers more to look forward to. The most challenging among them is Redemption Ridge, an expertonly playground with more than 2,000 feet of sustained vertical. Meanwhile, Big Dutch Peak, a smaller mountain with blues and bump runs that funnel to the East Village Gondola, is the perfect challenge for intermediate skiers.

But it’s not just the terrain that has visitors excited. In true Deer Valley style, the resort has developed a range of VIP experiences across the East Village. One immediate hit has been the Corduroy Lunch Club, which offers skiers the thrill of making first tracks without the earlymorning start. Each day at noon, a rope drop near East Village Gondola mid-station opens a curated selection of three to six freshly groomed runs, left untouched and available to anyone with a lift ticket.

Even the best terrain depends on snow, and Deer Valley is determined to live up to Utah’s “greatest snow on Earth” tagline—especially amid increasingly unpredictable winters. As part of the Expanded Excellence project, the resort has added over 1,200 new snow guns, 350,000 feet of new pipe, three new pump houses, and a 10 million– gallon snowmaking pond, creating one of the largest and most modern snowmaking systems in North America.

day, the place to be is the scenic deck at Royal Street Café, a casual mid-mountain eatery at Silver Lake Lodge with a satisfying menu of burgers, tacos, and chili. Winter 2027–2028 will see the opening of a food hall at Deer Valley East Village Lodge, and a restaurant and bar in the new Park Peak Lodge. Until then, East Village skiers can dine at the temporary East Village Restaurant, which serves hearty dishes such as shepherd’s pie, mountain mac ‘n’ cheese, and soba noodles. The area’s first hotel, the ski-in/ski-out Grand Hyatt Deer Valley, adds a sushi restaurant and a steakhouse to the dining mix.

The après-ski offerings are also more diverse than ever. For a glitzy scene complete with Champagne, caviar, and international DJs, head to institutions like the slopeside Après Lounge at Montage Deer Valley, or the Vintage Room, a 1,600-square-foot heated tent made from crystalclear glass and polycarbonate, located on the ski beach of the St. Regis Deer Valley. I found myself returning to the fancy yurt of newcomer Chute Eleven, which pairs live music with decadent dishes like lobster-and-caviar grilled cheese. If you prefer a more laid-back vibe, The Sticky Wicket serves craft beers, creative cocktails, and elevated pub food like brisket fries and fried chicken sandwiches in a vintage setting that celebrates the golden age of skiing.

Seatings are offered at 11:30 a.m., 11:45 a.m., or 1:45 p.m.; the late reservation is the hottest ticket in town, delivering riotous après shenanigans.

After a decadent lunch of caviar, seafood, and bubbling pots of fondue, dishes are cleared to allow guests to boogie down on the tables in their boots. So much bubbly is popped—and sprayed—that Cloud Nine claims to be Veuve Clicquot’s top account in the country.

Buzzy New York City red sauce restaurant Rubirosa now has an Aspen outpost steps from the Silver Queen gondola, in the Residences at The Little Nell. Here, generations of family recipes have been distilled down to hits like the cult favorite Tie Dye Pizza, swirled with pesto and vodka and tomato sauces. Perhaps no one better embodied that spirit than Harry Winston. Long before he earned the nickname the “King of Diamonds,” Winston was just a young boy with an extraordinary eye. Born in 1896, he grew up around his father’s small jewelry store in New York City. At 12 years old, he famously purchased a two-carat emerald from a pawn shop for 25 cents, recognizing its value before anyone else, and sold it two days later for $800. It was an early glimpse of the business instinct that drove him to build one of the world’s greatest jewelry houses.

When he founded his eponymous company in 1932, Europe still dominated the world of fine jewelry. Winston rewrote the rules. Rather than creating ornate settings for gemstones, he designed pieces that celebrated the stones, pioneering graceful, light-filled pieces that made diamonds appear to float effortlessly against the wearer’s skin. His philosophy—that jewelry should enhance the beauty of the woman wearing it rather than overpower her—was radical for the times, and remains modern to this day.

Winston also understood something few luxury houses at the time appreciated: Glamour was becoming global.

He was the first jeweler to lend extraordinary diamonds to Hollywood actresses to wear to the Academy Awards, establishing red-carpet jewelry culture decades before it became commonplace. Marilyn Monroe immortalized his name in the 1953 film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes when she sang, “Talk to me, Harry Winston, tell me about it,” cementing his place not simply as a jeweler, but as an American icon.

Winston’s influence extended far beyond his Fifth Avenue townhouse flagship, which he opened in 1960. His daring acquisition of historic diamonds earned him worldwide acclaim, while his generosity helped shape America’s cultural legacy.

In 1958, he donated the infamous 45.52-carat Hope Diamond—believed at the time to be cursed—to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., famously sending the priceless jewel to the museum by registered U.S. mail. Today, it remains one of the museum’s greatest treasures and the centerpiece of the Natural Gem Collection—a testament to Winston’s belief that extraordinary beauty should be shared.

Across the street from Harry Winston on Fifth Avenue, another legendary house has been shaping American luxury for nearly two centuries. Established in 1837 by 25-year-old Connecticut native Charles Lewis Tiffany, the retailer helped establish the language of modern American jewelry with its broad selection of jewelry, silver, and accessories, and was the first company to promote the diamond ring as a symbol of love. Tiffany recognized that fabulous gemstones could define a brand as much as design and craftsmanship—as demonstrated by his acquisition of the famous 128.54-carat yellow Tiffany Diamond in 1878.

The house also became synonymous with artistic innovation. Through presentations at the great World’s Fairs of Chicago, St. Louis, and New York City, Tiffany showcased jewelry, silverware, and decorative arts that rivaled European craftsmanship, while expressing a distinctly American point of view.

Today, Tiffany & Co. continues to evolve. Designers Jean Schlumberger, Elsa Peretti, and Paloma Picasso each

left an indelible mark on the house, while contemporary ambassadors have introduced the brand’s historic creations to new audiences. Few would have imagined Jay-Z wearing a Schlumberger Bird on a Rock brooch, or Lady Gaga showing off the Tiffany Diamond, and yet somehow both felt entirely natural—a reminder that true icons always find fresh relevance.

If Tiffany celebrated refinement, David Webb embraced exuberance. Emerging in the 1960s, Webb rejected restraint in favor of eye-catching color, sculptural form, and fearless scale. His animal bracelets, oversized rings, and richly textured gold pieces captured the liberated mood of the 1960s, when women increasingly sought jewelry that reflected their sense of independence as much as their style. “The thing women want most today is a smashing piece of jewelry they can wear in the daytime and on into the evening,” Webb famously said.

More than a half century later, his designs continue to resonate with collectors, as well as a younger generation that is discovering the house for the first time. Webb’s pieces remain among the clearest expressions of American glamour: unabashedly joyful and expressive.

Few designers have translated the American dream more successfully than Ralph Lauren. Born to working-class immigrant parents from Belarus, Lauren grew up in the Bronx. Beginning with a line of neckties in 1967, he built far more than a fashion company; he created an aesthetic universe. His vision of America—equal parts Ivy League polish and rugged frontier spirit—became one of the fashion industry’s most recognizable looks. His entrepreneurial instinct led him to become one of the first designers to expand into home furnishings, restaurants, and accessories—all part of a curated world that millions aspired to inhabit.

Tom Ford offers an entirely different vision of American bravado. When he launched his namesake label in 2005, he created a version of luxury based on razor-sharp tailoring, sensual evening wear, and unapologetic sex appeal. His impeccably cut suits, with their broad peak lapels and sculpted silhouettes, redefined American menswear and instilled confidence in those who wore it, while his sleek gowns brought cinematic glamour to women on and off

the red carpet. Ford’s aesthetic is pure American: polished, powerful, and self-assured.

After founding his label in 1965, Dominican-born Oscar de la Renta introduced a newfound sense of elegance to American ready-to-wear. His refined tailoring, romantic eveningwear, and impeccable craftsmanship made him a favorite of generations of first ladies, from Jacqueline Kennedy to Laura Bush. Today, under co-creative directors Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, the house continues to balance timeless sophistication with contemporary style.

Tory Burch delivered a fresh take on modern American sportswear for a new generation when she launched her brand in 2004. Her effortless mix of practicality, color, and optimism offered women clothing that felt polished without sacrificing comfort. Equally influential has been the Tory Burch Foundation, whose work supporting women entrepreneurs has become a model of purposedriven luxury.

Then came Thom Browne. When Browne introduced his radically tailored suits in 2003, he challenged decades of conventional menswear—especially the then-prevalent boxy suit. His cropped jackets, ankle-length trousers, and precise proportions transformed modern tailoring, ushering in a new aesthetic that, while perhaps not for everyone, embodies America’s willingness to challenge convention in pursuit of originality.

A similarly unorthodox spirit has defined David Yurman.

What began in the 1970s with the sculptor’s now-famous twisted helix bracelet—a gift for his wife, Sybil—grew to become one of the most recognizable jewelry pieces of the era. Known as the Cable bracelet, it established an entirely new category of designer jewelry that was luxurious yet wearable, collectible yet effortless.

After officially founding his brand in 1980, Yurman went on to redefine how Americans wore fine jewelry. ondoners have been decamping to the Cotswolds—the pastoral English countryside just beyond the city—for ages, but for the average American, this place of bucolic hills, storybook villages, and stately manor houses is something of an enigma.

“Is it the Hamptons of the UK?” more than a few of my friends asked before I headed there early last summer. Well, yes, I responded—if you replace beaches with castle gardens and vineyards with sheep-dotted farmland.

To be sure, for most Americans, the Cotswolds has more recognition in name—and imagination—than in reality. Stretching across 800 square miles in five counties, the destination personifies an idyllic version of rural England, conjuring Downton Abbey, Jane Eyre, and Wuthering Heights (geographic accuracy being irrelevant, of course). Plenty of that vision pans out: Ancient Roman sites, ruins of abbeys, lost-in-time hamlets, treasurefilled antique shops, and cozy village pubs unfurl like a pastoral tapestry along quiet country lanes.

It was a characteristically gray morning when I arrived at Bradbury Farmhouse, a fivebedroom estate tucked behind a private drive on a quiet back road in North Oxfordshire.

The Exclusive Resorts Residence’s thick stone walls and picture windows were subtle hints at the property’s long-ago life as a dairy. Half

a dozen small rooms were converted into various sitting areas and even an intimate media room in the loft; modern additions included an expansive chef’s kitchen and a pool house with a sauna and gym. Outside, sculptures were scattered among lavender bushes and flowering hydrangea.

A host of English celebrities (not to mention American celebrities who fancy themselves of the English persuasion) and upper-crust dignitaries own houses in the Cotswolds, and Bradbury Farmhouse could easily belong to one of them. But here, a certain ease prevailed, giving the sense that anyone—regardless of accent or surname—could feel at home within its storied walls.

One aspect of the Cotswolds that can’t be underestimated is the necessity for a car and, thus, the ability to navigate winding country roads on the left side of the road—something that adds to the sense that the journey is as important (perhaps even more so) than the destination. Luckily, I found little reason to hurry when exploring beyond Bradbury Farmhouse. In fact, there were many reasons to slow down: thatched cottages brimming with colorful gardens, emerald pastures filled with fluffy grazers, medieval churches with towering spires, and farmstands overflowing with fresh picks of the day.

I eventually arrived in Stow-on-the-Wold, one of the Cotswolds’ most important historic market towns, where merchants once gathered in the large square to trade everything from butter and eggs to livestock (it was once famous for its enormous sheep fairs). Today, the merchant scene thrives in a more leisurely manner, at antique shops crammed with sterling silver, crystal, porcelain, vintage jewelry, and other decorative objects. At Tudor House Antiques, clocks and ceramics lined the shelves in a stone structure dating back to the 1500s; Baggott & Co. displayed a

dazzling showcase of Georgian and Regency furniture, along with English oak and folk art.

I wandered it all with a warm tea in hand, peering through arched alleyways covered in ivy before slipping into the Queen’s Head, a cozy pub off the market square, for a pint.

Antiques are an inevitable draw throughout the Cotswolds. The setting just about demands an interest in things both old and storied, and while Stow-on-the-Wold may be the region’s best-known destination for collectors, other villages like Broadway and Burford are favorite stops for Georgian furniture, silver, porcelain, oil paintings, vintage maps, and country-house curiosities.

Some of the most beautiful objects I glimpsed, however, were the royal heirlooms on display (and thus, woefully, not for sale) at Blenheim Palace. There, tapestries, paintings, period furniture, and decorative arts are displayed within the grand state rooms they were originally commissioned to adorn—including the childhood bedroom of Sir Winston Churchill, who was born there in 1874.

History often factors into the local culinary scene too. The Wild Rabbit, housed in an 18thcentury inn in Kingham, helped usher in a new generation of British country dining when it opened in 2013 with ingredient-driven menus built around Daylesford, a nearby organic farm. (The farm itself is worth a visit for its fresh meat and produce as well as the Bamford Spa and some Goop-inspired shopping.) In Burford, one of The Bull hotel’s restaurants, Wild, offers what felt like a demonstrational dinner party, as chef Ben Chamberlain explained the nearby origins of main ingredients while cooking them over an open fire. The Fox at Broadwell is another restored village inn where the Sunday roast remains a weekly ritual, elevated through locally sourced meats, impeccably crisp roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, and seasonal vegetables.

Not everything is strictly traditional. A few miles from Bradbury Farmhouse, beneath a painted sign bearing a portrait of a stately gentleman donning a Prince Valiant haircut, lies the Duke of Cumberland’s Head freehouse.

Though the building has stood for more than 200 years, proprietor Max Barkes is a fresh face around town, having trained at institutions like Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and Cliveden House before landing in the Cotswolds with a simple ambition: to bring the standards of the world’s finest hotels to the village pub. He’s found a kindred spirit in 22-year-old head chef Tom Farrar, whose résumé includes Michelinstarred The Five Fields and Clare Smyth’s three-Michelin-starred Core. Farrar’s cooking honors British ingredients while quietly subverting convention, whether through crisp potato rösti topped with melting pig cheek or a deceptively simple courgette crowned with Welsh rarebit.

A similar philosophy defines the nearby RH England at Aynho Park, where the American brand has transformed a 400-year-old, Grade I–listed country estate—reimagined over the centuries by Sir John Soane—into its first European gallery. Original plasterwork, grand staircases, and Capability Brown gardens now provide the backdrop for striking contemporary interiors, destination restaurants, and design installations, creating one of the region’s most unexpected pairings of old and new.

That dynamic of past and present is perhaps the Cotswolds’ greatest trick—as romantic and nostalgic as its reputation promises yet quietly evolving behind honey-colored stone facades and ivy-clad inns. Its villages aren’t frozen in time so much as gently carried forward, shaped by those who understand that preserving a place sometimes means allowing it to change.

There’s no doubt the Cotswolds fantasy of old is still very much alive. But its modern reality is even better.

ostcards from the Cayman Islands tend to stick to classic Caribbean tableaus: the sugary sand of Seven Mile Beach; stingrays patrolling the turquoise ripples of Grand Cayman’s famous sandbars; coral reefs bedazzled by the tropical fish that lure snorkelers and scuba divers from around the world.

But ask those who live and work in the Cayman Islands what makes their home so distinctive, and they’re more likely to talk about the cosmopolitan influences at play in their triisland archipelago. People from more than 137 countries call this global financial hub home.

Many come for its tax-neutral status—then stay for its unmatched quality of life.

Nowhere is this cultural amalgam more evident than in Grand Cayman’s culinary scene. The islands’ more than 200 restaurants span Peruvian, Japanese, Filipino, Colombian, Mediterranean, Jamaican, and Indian cuisines, to name just a few. “There is an incredible diversity of cultures represented on the island, and that is reflected in the food,” says Eric Ripert, who for more than 20 years has helmed beloved seafood restaurant Blue by Eric Ripert at the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.

With its prime Seven Mile Beach location, the Caribbean’s first—and only—Forbes five-star restaurant is a memorable place to experience Cayman’s bounty prepared using classic French techniques. Every January, Ripert hosts Cayman Cookout at the Ritz-Carlton. Launched in 2009 as a small gathering of chefs and friends, it has evolved into the Caribbean’s most prestigious food event, luring culinary stars from around the world. The schedule features a mix of beachfront gatherings, cooking demonstrations, chef-hosted dinners, and wine tastings. José Andrés, Daniel Boulud, Emeril Lagasse, and Andrew Zimmern are among the regulars, yet the vibe remains convivial and unpretentious.

An international cast of mixologists and sommeliers mingle on the sand, too, sharing stories with cookout attendees.

Whether at Cayman Cookout or one of the islands’ locally owned restaurants, it’s the spirit of collaboration between international chefs and homegrown Caymanian talent that has helped establish the destination as a true restaurant heavyweight. “There is a real respect for ingredients and tradition, while also an openness to innovation,” Ripert says.

Ask a Caymanian chef like Luigi Moxam, who grew up in Grand Cayman’s lush Lower Valley, to explain this evolution, and he’ll tell you that the island’s natural abundance has always held unique promise. He recalls childhood days spent gathering conch and lobster with friends and foraging in the bush for favorite Caribbean fruits such as mangoes, guavas, and coconuts, as well as Asian imports like june plums and guineps. At the time, lobsters were so plentiful in these waters, they were used as fishing bait, Moxam says.

“To this day, no chef from anywhere or any restaurant can ever compare to that simplest and most perfect culinary experience,” he

says of feasting on Caymanian-grown mangoes while wading into the ocean as a child, the sweet fruit mingling with the taste of saltwater.

Moxam honors that legacy at Cayman Cabana, the restaurant he runs with his wife, Christina, who’s also a chef, on the waterfront in the capital, George Town. Here, traditional recipes passed on from family and friends inform the kitchen. The menu follows the seasons and features dishes like young coconut ceviche marinated in island citrus, local market greens, and snapper cooked in banana leaf.

Moxam sources most ingredients himself.

His go-to is the Hamlin Stephenson Farmers’ Market, held on the cricket grounds in George Town, where bunches of plantains hang in the stalls and the array of mangoes is dizzying.

(More than 100 varieties flourish in Caymanian soils.) Snapper, wahoo, mahi mahi, and grouper glisten atop piles of ice, as vendors display the day’s catch. “If I don’t have fresh local fish, I’d rather apologize and recommend something else,” Moxam says.

Brittanni Seymour, also born and raised on Grand Cayman, celebrates her layered culinary identity with something a little sweeter. At Scratch Doughnuts + Bakehouse, she expresses “all things Cayman, with a bit of a twist” in confections like a cassava cake doughnut, inspired by her grandmother’s recipe, and a doughnut filled with curry mango purée. If you’re planning to visit Scratch Doughnuts on a weekend, be sure to arrive early, as she’s often sold out by noon.

In their Seville studio, Luciano Galán and Daniel Maldonado sculpt cabezas recipiente, ceramic heads inspired by the ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean, which modeled anthropomorphic vessels as votive offerings to the gods. “We add our own original modeling with a design of shapes and colors,” the duo explains. “What you see was made in a single, unretouched moment, like live music.” Their process is a collaboration between the two artisans: Each piece begins as a watercolor sketch, before a small test model is made. Finally the head is built at full scale, fired, glazed, and hand-painted with oxide pigments in shades custom-mixed by the studio. Their playful approach to these ancient spiritual vessels has garnered a devoted international following, and brings new life to an age-old form.

(The name was inspired by Madame de Pompadour, born Jeanne-Antoinette Poisson, an 18th-century tastemaker and wallpaper enthusiast.) Take home a single sheet of domino paper to frame, a journal bound in an antique print, or—should you want to turn a room into a little slice of 1750s France—an entire wallpaper design.

Since 1921, Bitossi has been carrying forward the best of Italian craftsmanship in Montelupo Fiorentino, a town just outside Florence where ceramics have been made since the 13th century. The house is known for its contemporary collaborations with celebrated artists and designers from Italy and around the world, including designer Patricia Urquiola, whose Merlate collection turns architectural forms into ceramic pieces, and Martino Gamper (above), a London-based, Italy-born designer whose Dittico range is a family of vases sculpted in white clay. While clean, organic forms define many of the atelier’s modern pieces, Bitossi is perhaps best known for its iconic Rimini Blu collection, designed by Aldo Londi, the artistic director who helped shape the studio’s postwar identity. Launched in 1959 and still in production today, the royal blue collection of dishes and figurines, hand-stamped with geometric patterns, is recognized as an icon of midcentury design.

t was the coldest day of an eight-night January trip to Norway, but it wasn’t above the Arctic Circle where the Exclusive Resorts group experienced temperatures of 14 degrees Fahrenheit and a windchill of five degrees. Instead, it was near Bergen, in the south of the country, where photographer Ken Kochey found himself on the top deck of an electric ferry gliding across the Aurlandsfjord, braced against the frigid wind.

“The landscape almost looked sharper, more vivid, in the obscenely cold temperature,” Kochey says. His companions, who were traveling together on a Once-in-a-Lifetime Journey, would join him up on deck, retreat back into the warmth for a few minutes, then come back out again, determined to witness the incredible view.

Wearing every layer he had in his possession, Kochey excitedly photographed the fjord’s ink-black waters and blinding, snow-covered cliffs. Just three days into the journey, he had already fallen for the country. “It was there where I first thought that Norway is one of the rare places on the earth where I could actually see myself living,” he says.

Aurlandsfjord was just one extreme moment on a trip full of extremes: limited sunlight, adrenaline-filled excursions, contrast therapy—not to mention sleeping in an igloo.

The adventure began in Bergen, where the group visited the city’s candy-colored Bryggen fish market and maststudded harbors, and explored the surrounding nature trails without encountering the usual summer crowds.

Kochey found that, in Bergen, the outdoors was not just a scenic backdrop, but part of the machinery of everyday existence. Trails slipped into the forest directly from

downtown, with locals climbing the overlooks as casually as commuters might descend into a subway. “The whole town seems to hike up these mountains,” he says. “Daily life like that was beautiful to witness.”

Then came Alta. Some 250 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Sorrisniva Arctic Wilderness Lodge was the group’s soft landing for its first hard-edged adventures: husky sledding, snowmobiling over frozen lakes, and reindeer sled rides led

by Indigenous Sámi guides. Inside a lavvu (a portable tentlike dwelling), tea brewed over a fire while a guide shared stories of traditional Arctic culture. “It was a glimpse into a lifestyle that I thought was long gone,” Kochey says.

Sorrisniva’s Igloo Hotel supplied the trip’s most intense encounter with the elements. Newly sculpted each winter, the property invites guests to spend the night beneath

thick fur covers, in a room with walls and furniture carved entirely from ice. Heated guest rooms in the nearby main lodge are available for anyone whose appetite for novelty outpaces their circulation. Some members made it the whole night. The point was not real peril but the thrill of brushing against it, secure in the knowledge that warmth, dinner, and a soothing spa treatment were never far away.

The northern lights danced across the sky on several of the nights the group spent in Alta. It was Kochey’s first time seeing the spectacle and he found himself hypnotized not just by the color of the lights, but by their restlessness.

“What I was shocked by was how quickly they moved and swirled,” he says. “I wasn’t expecting that.” At Sorrisniva Arctic Wilderness Lodge, he would sit in his room watching them through the always frozen skylight late into the night.

Next, the group headed south to Oslo. But before reaching the Norwegian capital, they stopped in at Holmenkollen, the location of a monumental ski jump used for Olympic and international competitions. “It doesn’t look quite so steep when you’re watching it on TV,” Kochey says. “But when you’re at the top looking down, it’s something.” A ski-jump simulator pod offered the sensation without the consequences, though for Kochey, the experience couldn’t be over fast enough. “My stomach dropped, even in the simulator pod,” he says. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, get me out.’”

The trip ended with a final moment of extremity—one it would have been a sin to skip in Scandinavia: contrast therapy. Kochey nearly got frostbite in his toes while running across the snowy decks of the floating saunas in Oslo’s harbor, where he photographed steam rising from the bodies of his travel companions as they moved

from wood-fired heat to frigid water. Once Kochey could no longer tolerate the cold, he put away his camera and joined in. “It takes your breath away,” he says of plunging into the Oslofjord waters. “It’s relieving in a way, but talking about extremes, you’re dying in the sauna, and then you’re frozen.”

Norway is a country that seems to live comfortably alongside nature’s generosity, severity, and occasional indifference. This trip offered a mere taste of that dynamic, but of the many journeys Kochey has photographed with Exclusive Resorts, he noticed that the shared challenges—and shared accomplishment—of this one brought his group together in a truly meaningful way.

“I think everybody made really deep memories with each other,” he says. “The experience of the northern lights and the extreme cold and the landscapes—they bonded us in a way that only this type of trip can.”

Allan: The idea that everyone could be

under one roof—that was huge for us.

Jenny: I already had three kids

when my parents joined The Club, so from the beginning it really was about bringing everybody together.

four young daughters. You really start to understand what your parents were trying to create once you’re doing it yourself. People always say you only get 18 summers with your kids.

That really sticks with me. We make sure we get away as a family every year because those are the memories they’re going to carry with them.

Allan: That’s exactly what we hoped

for. We wanted to give our kids the opportunity to travel with their own children much earlier than we were able to. We know what those weeks together mean.

Kathy: We can picture what they’re

doing, even when we’re not there.

When Allan and Kathy Koenig joined Exclusive Resorts in 2007, they were thinking about their five grown children—and the families they hoped would one day follow.

Two decades later, their annual family gatherings have become a tradition shared by 27 family members across three generations.

Here, they are joined by their eldest daughter, Jenny Fumarello, and their son, Michael Koenig, to reflect on how travel has evolved alongside the family itself.

our family. We go back to Sea Island almost every year because the girls know it so well. They’re comfortable there, they have their routines, and it’s become one of those places that feels familiar in the best possible way.

Jenny: We love Maui for the same

reason. We’ve been enough times that my girls know their favorite places, and now that they’re older, it’s fun to watch them take ownership of those experiences. They’ve also become incredibly comfortable traveling.

Airports don’t intimidate them. They know how to navigate new places.

That’s something I don’t think you realize they’re learning until you see them doing it on their own.

Allan: We also take an annual ski trip that everyone is invited to.

While we’re on that trip, we book the next year’s trip, so everyone has plenty of notice to plan around it as much as possible.

where we are staying. Everybody comes home from the beach or the ski slopes or wherever they spent the day, someone starts a card game around the kitchen table, the cousins are doing each other’s hair, people are making snacks.

Everyone’s just together. Those are the moments I remember most.

Michael: It’s almost like having a family compound for a week.

Everybody is together, but everyonwe also has the freedom to do their own thing. The cousins disappear together, and the adults can play golf or sit on the deck.

Allan: As parents—and now

grandparents—you realize you don’t have to orchestrate everything.

You get to sit back and watch it happen. You watch the cousins

become close. You watch your kids spend time with each other.

Even our sons-in-law have become closer because of these trips. That’s probably the greatest reward.

Jenny: And now we’re already

seeing our kids use the membership.

My oldest daughter studied abroad in London and used it for a weekend in Paris.

Allan: We’ve even talked about

someday using it for the grandkids’ honeymoons or whatever comes next.

Kathy: We always looked at

the membership as something for the whole family.

Allan: That’s really what it’s

become. And Kathy and I get some really good hugs out of it.

Two decades of family travel have given The Club member Stacy Branca’s children a subtle education in curiosity, confidence, and independence.

The best journeys leave us with more than memories. They challenge assumptions, introduce unfamiliar perspectives, and quietly shape the way we move through the world long after we’ve unpacked our suitcases. Travel has a way of revealing who we are—and at its best, it also nudges us toward who we might become.

For Stacy Branca, whose family has spent nearly two decades exploring the world together, those subtle shifts in perspective were never the stated purpose of a city escape or beach vacation. They simply accumulated over time, quietly shaping her five children into curious, capable young adults with the confidence to navigate unfamiliar places—and the curiosity to engage with them.

“They’ve become very capable,” she says. “Very self-assured.”

“My oldest daughter still vividly remembers that trip because they weren’t just walking around a museum staring at pictures,” Branca says. Years later, she still talks about returning to the Louvre.

The same philosophy shaped the family’s more adventurous travels.

Beach vacations were rarely spent sitting still. Instead, the days filled with surfing, snorkeling, zip-lining, hiking, fishing, or exploring beyond the shoreline. Some of the family’s most enduring lessons came during a safari in Tanzania. Along with game drives and visits to Maasai communities, they spent an afternoon at a local school, bringing supplies and spending time with students their children’s own ages. They exchanged songs, toured the classrooms, and watched as many of the children delighted in seeing photographs of themselves for the first time.

“We really try to connect with the local people,” Branca says. “The Tanzania trip in particular was really powerful for my kids.” The experience lingered long after the trip ended. Several of her children later returned to East Africa on mission trips or volunteer programs.

One spent a gap year working on microfinance initiatives that helped women start their own small businesses, while another volunteered in a medical clinic.

Life Lessons

Looking back, Branca says, travel provided a subtle education for her children—and lessons often emerged in unexpected ways. In France, rather than ushering the family through the Louvre on a traditional tour, their guide transformed the museum into a scavenger hunt, challenging the children to search for specific masterpieces, solve clues, and interact with museum staff along the way.

A bike tour through Paris borrowed its format from The Amazing Race, encouraging the kids to recreate famous sculptures and unravel riddles as they explored the city. And days spent visiting the Loire Valley’s historic châteaux were balanced with fencing lessons, cooking classes, and cycling through the vineyards.

Travel also helped the children develop skills that can’t be taught in any classroom: self-sufficiency, resilience, and the ability to assess risk. During a multiday rafting expedition through the Grand Canyon, each day ended with everyone pitching in to set up camp beneath the stars, and sleeping outdoors meant understanding that nature wasn’t something to observe from a distance— especially after the discovery of a rattlesnake in their camp.

During a trip to Hawaii, the children wanted to jump from a series of seaside cliffs popular with locals.

Rather than following the crowd, they struck up a conversation with local teenagers, watched where they entered the water, and asked which spots were safest before deciding whether to jump themselves. “They’ve learned that every country has different safety standards,” Branca says. “They’ve learned to think for themselves and evaluate, ‘Is this really a good idea?’”

Today, those years of travel reveal themselves in subtle ways. Branca’s children are comfortable striking up conversations with strangers, adapting to unfamiliar cultures, and embracing experiences that once

might have seemed intimidating. One son, while studying abroad in Spain, naturally became the planner for his group of friends. That confidence in and of itself, says Branca, is the greatest travel souvenir of all.

“They are worldly far beyond most people their age,” she says. “They have a much greater appreciation for other people, places, and experiences than I ever could have imagined.”

when a government shutdown threatened my position. I couldn’t afford to sit at home waiting for funding to return, so I took a temporary job with one of the world’s first online services. I fell in love with the possibilities almost immediately.

That experience taught me something I’ve carried ever since: Sometimes the opportunities that change your life arrive disguised as disappointments.

If we’re willing to stay curious and pay attention, unexpected detours often become the most meaningful chapters of our lives.

You’ve written about living fearlessly, but you’ve also said that doesn’t mean living without fear. What does being fearless actually look like?

Your career has taken some remarkable turns. Looking back, were those moments carefully planned, or did they unfold more organically?

Much more organically than people might imagine. One of the biggest turning points in my life actually began with what felt like a setback.

People often assume fearless people don’t experience doubt, but I’ve never found that to be true. I still feel nervous walking into new situations. I still wonder whether something will work. The difference is that I’ve learned not to let fear make the decision for me.

The greatest breakthroughs

happen outside our comfort zones.

Whether it was leaving GE for a tiny startup called AOL or taking on new challenges later in my career, I’ve learned that growth rarely comes from what’s familiar.

Fear doesn’t disappear; you simply discover that what’s waiting on the other side is usually worth it.

Failure is something most of us try to avoid. You’ve taken the opposite approach and even talk openly about your own failures. Why?

Because failure has been one of my greatest teachers. When I speak to students, I sometimes begin with what I call my “failure résumé.”

Every major turning point in my life was preceded by something that didn’t work out the way I expected.

One of the hardest moments came through a clean-water initiative our foundation launched in Africa.

We believed deeply in the project but eventually had to acknowledge that it wasn’t delivering the impact we’d hoped for. It was painful to end something we had invested so

much in, but being transparent about what we’d learned allowed others to improve on our work. If we never talk about failure, we also lose the chance to learn from it.

You’ve often said that “talent is universal, but opportunity is not.”

Where did that belief come from?

It comes directly from my own life.

I was raised by a single mother who worked as a waitress to support four children. We didn’t have many resources, but we had a mother who believed deeply in hard work, generosity, and making the most of every opportunity.

Receiving a scholarship to attend a private school changed my life. I saw that the children in my neighborhood had the same intelligence, ambition, and dreams as those growing up with tremendous privilege. The difference wasn’t talent. It was access. That’s why so much of my work has focused on creating opportunity for others.

National Geographic has been inspiring curiosity for well over a century.

How do you honor that legacy while continuing to reinvent the organization?

At National Geographic, we like to say we’re a 137-year-old startup.

Our founders believed that science, exploration, and storytelling could help people better understand the world, and that mission hasn’t changed. What has changed is how we tell those stories and how many people we can reach. Today, nearly

2 billion people encounter National Geographic every month. But the goal isn’t simply to reach people; it’s to inspire them to care enough to act. We believe in the power of science, exploration, education, and storytelling to illuminate and protect the wonder of our world. If someone walks away more curious, more informed, or more willing to make a difference, then we’ve done our job.

You spend a great deal of time thinking

Sometimes generosity is as simple as offering encouragement, sharing your time, opening a door, or giving someone an opportunity that they might never have had otherwise. Someone I will probably never meet made it possible for me to attend school through a scholarship. That single act changed the trajectory of my life.

I think we’re all capable of creating those moments for someone else.

about the future. What gives you hope when you look at the next generation?

When you think about legacy—your family, your work, and the people

I think younger generations are going to redefine what it means to make an impact. They may not always trust large institutions the way previous generations did, but they care deeply about making a difference in their communities and in the world.

I do worry that we’ve removed many of the opportunities children once had to take healthy risks. When I was growing up, I spent hours outdoors exploring, failing, figuring things out for myself. Those experiences build resilience. As parents, mentors, and communities, we have an opportunity to help young people develop that same confidence—to let them stumble while we’re still there to help them get back up.

I’ve come to think less about legacy as something people talk about after we’re gone and more as a question we ask ourselves every day: Did I help make things better? That can happen within your family, your workplace, your neighborhood, or your community.

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve also learned to value time for reflection. My mornings begin with reading, prayer, and quiet before the day begins.

For Jim Bush and his family, returning to Sea Island each summer is more than a vacation—it’s a tradition that brings three generations together.

We’ve been going to Sea Island almost every summer for the past 14 years. We missed one year—we went to Hawaii instead—but otherwise we’ve returned year after year. In fact, we’ve already booked two houses for two weeks next summer.

People sometimes ask why we keep returning to the same place when there are so many places in the world to see. For us, it’s never really been about the destination.

It’s about having a place where our family comes together.

My wife and I stay for the full two weeks, and our kids and grandkids come and go as their schedules allow.

Sometimes it’s five days, sometimes it’s 10, and occasionally someone can’t make it because life gets in the way. That’s just reality when you’re coordinating three generations.

But family always comes first, and everyone does their best to be there.

That’s one of the gifts of returning to the same place. You aren’t just making new memories—you can actually see the new ones layered right on top of the old ones.

We used to have a lake house, but after we sold it, Sea Island became our family’s gathering place instead.

It feels like a home away from home—the place everyone knows, looks forward to returning to, and already starts talking about before one trip is even over.

The kids have their favorite traditions, and they would notice

immediately if we skipped one. About 12 years ago, I started organizing a scavenger hunt across the island. It begins with a goofy pirate coconut hanging outside our house, and the youngest grandchild always discovers the first clue. I hide clues all over the property before everyone wakes up, and eventually they lead to a little treasure chest I’ve buried in the sand.

The prizes are nothing special— just inexpensive trinkets—but the excitement never fades. Even the older grandkids, who have long since outgrown treasure hunts, still join in because it’s become part of our family story. I like to think someday we’ll be doing it with great-grandchildren.

We’ve had a Lowcountry boil for many years now, complete with bibs and lots of laughter. We always make a point of having one adults-only dinner at the Oak Room while we’re there. When the grandchildren were younger, Sea Island’s babysitting service made that easy; now they’re old enough to stay together on their own. The Oak Room has become a tradition in itself, and the grandkids still love seeing the bagpiper and gathering afterward for s’mores.

Lowcountry Tradition

When we first started coming here, we only had two grandchildren.

Today we have six, and one of my favorite parts of the trip is simply seeing how much they’ve changed.

We take a family photo every year in the same place, and it’s become this wonderful record of time passing. One year the kids are on training wheels; before you know it, they’re riding full-size bikes around the island on their own. The little ones become the big kids, and suddenly they’re taller than I am.

We rent bikes for everyone, pile into golf carts, spend the day at the beach, go kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, golfing. In the evenings, we’re usually back around the table playing cards, dominoes, or whatever game gets everyone laughing.

One of the reasons we joined Exclusive Resorts more than 20

years ago was to travel with our family, but we also wanted to create opportunities for our children to build those same kinds of memories with their own kids. We don’t have to be celebrating a milestone to go to Sea Island. Sometimes the best reason to travel is simply because it’s time to be together.

Every June, we come back and

pick up right where we left off. The traditions are familiar, the faces are a little older, and somehow the place feels exactly the same. When we look back at those annual family photos, we’re reminded not just of how much the grandchildren have grown, but how fortunate we’ve been to spend all of those years together.

That’s what keeps us coming back.

Long before photography became an integral part of her travels, Member Margie Schubert was searching for a creative outlet. She experimented with painting and drawing, but it wasn’t until she picked up a camera nearly two decades later that something clicked. “Photography has greatly enriched my life and has taught me to see the world differently,” she says. “The creative process, more than anything else, is what makes photography feel essential to who I am.”

INTO THE WILD “Wildlife photography has become one of my favorite challenges. Animals don’t pose, don’t wait for good light, and don’t care about your composition, so you have to earn every shot with patience. SENSE OF PLACE “When I’m shooting a landscape, I try to avoid the obvious postcard shot and look for a different, more creative angle instead. I’m drawn to leading lines—something that makes the composition visually interesting—and an active sky makes a huge difference, too. Ideally, the landscape feels representative of the place itself, something that couldn’t be mistaken for anywhere else. During a Once-in-a-Lifetime Journey, I woke up at 4:30 a.m. in Cappadocia to photograph the hot-air balloons as they inflated in the first soft morning light. A little sleep deprivation is certainly worth it.”

THE HUMAN CONNECTION “People are the link to a culture. I try to get a feel for a place—a sense of what it’s actually like to live there. I’ll spend time observing interactions between people, the everyday rhythms and small moments that give a place its character, and that’s usually where the real photographs come from. At sea, the ship became a gathering place in its own right. The New York Times best-selling author Lisa See joined Members for a live book club discussion. Some photographs preserve a place; others, a feeling. For California-based Member Stephan Fabel, this image does both. Taken during his family’s annual ski trip to Deer Valley, it captures his 3-year-old son Quin sitting at the window, in awe of his first encounter with snow. “He was completely fascinated by the landscape,” Fabel says. “His nose was pressed against the glass, taking in what a snow-covered world looked like for the first time.” As Fabel made coffee nearby, he instinctively reached for his camera. “I just wanted to capture the wonder that my son felt.”
