AUGUST Clay Play

Saturday, August 11, 2 - 3:30 p.m.

McFarland Park Hunt for banks of natural clay during a creek walk. Plan on getting wet and muddy as we use our imaginations to play with clay. Who knows what else we may discover! Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes that will not be pulled off in mud. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This program is free, but registration is required by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, August 8.

Evening Prairie Walk

Join Dr. Thomas Rosburg on the last of 2018’s monthly prairie walks at the largest prairie remnant in Story County. See rare and common prairie flora and learn about the history and ecology of central Iowa prairies. Long pants, sturdy shoes, and bug spray are recommended. This walk is free, and no registration is required.

McFarland Park Story County Conservation offers a wide variety of outdoor experiences for school groups - one of our most popular being Pioneer Day. Now is your opportunity to see what all the excitement is about! Travel to 1869 and discover life as a pioneer. Meet two pioneers and help them with the daily chores. Try your hand at carding and spinning wool, doing laundry, and making your own soap. Help cook bread over the fire and churn butter.

Explore plants that were used by the pioneers and go on a cemetery tour to compare life changes over time. This program is intended for adults and older children who have aged out of the school-offered experience. More details about the day can be found on the registration page. Fee of $10 with registration is required by 4 p.m. on Monday, August 13.

Robison Wildlife Acres (29490 632nd Ave., Nevada) The forest is the therapist; the guide opens the door. Immerse yourself in nature and experience the benefits of being fully present in the medicine of the forest. This gentle three-hour forest therapy walk offers a rich experience in nature that can improve mood and provide relaxation. Certified guides from Forest Therapy Pathways will lead you to become sensitized to the healing environment of the forest. See more details and instruction on registration page. Earth Paints

Welcome the cooler weather and enjoy a late afternoon at McFarland Park.

Bring a blanket or chairs to sit on while enjoying the upbeat R&B, soul, roots rock, and blues music by Ames’ own Vinyl Vagabonds. The Mucky Duck Pub will offer food vending, or bring a picnic dinner to enjoy under a canopy of large oaks. The music will be inside the Conservation Center if it rains, so plan on coming no matter what the weather holds.

Bring your creativity and find out how easy, fun, and beautiful it is to make soil paint! You don’t have to be an artist to make art. Experiment, mix your own colors, and then fill in a provided outline or draw your own picture to paint. All materials will be provided, but participants can bring their own dry soil if they wish. Participants ages 5 and up are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Fee of $5 with registration is required by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10.

Explore this absolutely amazing survival strategy. Search for camouflage animals, and create and hide some critters of your own. This program is for children ages 5 and up plus their adult.

Participants must be dressed to explore the woods and prairie. Bring a snack and water if you wish. This program is free, but registration is required by 4 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10.

Campfires are a wonderful place to come together and enjoy the outdoors.

Join naturalist Heather Hucka for an evening of nature-inspired stories and songs along with everyone’s favorite fire treat... S’MORES! It will be a night of sharing and laughter. Bring a chair or blanket and a family-friendly story if you have one! This evening is free, but registration is required by 4 p.m. on Monday, October 22.

O.W.L.S. (Older, Wiser, Livelier Seniors) programs are held each month at 11 a.m. at the Story County Conservation Center. These are designed for “boomers” or older -- but anyone can attend. An optional luncheon follows the program for just $7.50. Register for lunch at storycountyconservation.org or call 515-232-2516.

Tuesday, September 4 A Superior Time on the Superior Hiking Trail - Wandering, Wondering, & Wine Chris Gleason, Judy Levings, and Nancy Franz A superlative hiking experience is only one state away! Discover how three retirees took forest bathing seriously as they dayhiked the Superior Hiking Trail. Nothing compares with the views, waterfalls, and mature trees on this trail. Learn about their hiking adventures and the ecosystems they explored.

Menu: fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, and fruit pizza.

Tuesday, October 2 Story County Conservation’s Projects Ryan Wiemold, Parks Superintendent Learn about the various ongoing and upcoming projects on Story County Conservation properties including: Tedesco Environmental Learning Corridor, the Hickory Grove Lake Restoration, land acquisitions, and trail updates.

Menu: pulled pork BBQ sandwiches on a homemade roll, potato salad, baked beans, apple crisp. Register for lunch by September 28.

Women’s Hunter Education

Saturday, November 3, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Conservation Center, McFarland Park We’re teaming up with the Iowa DNR to offer Iowa Hunter Education certification in a program designed for women ages 16 and up. This dual component course will include self-paced online study and culminate with a hands-on field day. Women hunters and conservationists will provide an encouraging environment for new hunters, those looking for comaraderie with other outdoorswomen, or those simply wanting to learn more about conservation and shooting sports. Participants must be 16 years of age or older; however, girls between the ages of 12 and 16 accompanied by an adult participant may also register and certify. There is no charge to participate, but in order to certify, participants must complete the online portion sometime between registration and the field day and complete a short multiple choice test. Field day activities include a variety of firearm and archery handling and shooting opportunities, an overview of Iowa hunting laws and outdoor ethics, and open dsicussions and time for Q&A throughout. A light wild game lunch will be provided. Please dress to be outside. Register by emailing Joli Vollers at joli.vollers@dnr.iowa.gov.

Wolves, Bears, & Dogsleds: A Northwoods Adventure February 9 - 12, 2019 Ely, Minnesota

Travel with us to the town of Ely in northeastern Minnesota to experience and learn about some of our wild carnivores.

Co-sponsored and co-led

by Polk and Story County Conservation, this trip will offer adventure in the forests and lakes surrounding Ely, the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Activities include trips to the International Wolf Center and North American Bear Center, as well as a chance to command your own dogsled team. Registration is handled through Legacy Tour and Travel. Fee: $1,099 per person if registering in pairs (two people sharing one room with either one or two beds) or $1,329 per person if registering on your own.

Deposit of $250 is required when booking with final payment due December 18.

The AAAA hosts monthly educational programs for the public from January to November. Meetings are on the third Saturday of each month (except December) with a meet and greet at 7:00 p.m. and a program at 7:30 p.m.

All programs will be held at the Story County Conservation Center at McFarland Park unless noted otherwise.

Afterwards, weather and sunset permitting, we will move to the club’s Observatory located just east of the conservation center for astronomical observing. Telescopes and binoculars will be available for your viewing pleasure.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI): River Stewardship Class

Wednesdays, September 12 - October 31, 1 - 2:30 p.m.

Become an informed advocate for Iowa’s rivers with an in-depth look at how land management influences water flows, water quality, and wildlife. Special attention will be given to local waterways where there are ongoing watershed projects and partnership. The course will include guest speakers, discussion, and training/tutorials on free web resources that can be used to access watershed and water quality information. Participants must be at least 55 years of age to participate in OLLI classes.

Trail Enhancement and Management (TEAM) Day Be a part of our TEAM and help make improvements to county trail systems. All volunteers are asked to wear long sleeves, pants, and sturdy, closed-toe shoes. Bring work gloves and a water bottle. Registration is required the Thursday before each event to ensure enough tools and refreshments for everyone.

PRAIRE SEED HARVESTS Doolittle Prairie (14249 560th Ave., Story City)

Help conservation staff collect prairie seed at Story County’s hidden gem, Doolittle Prairie. We’ll show you what to collect and provide information about the plants around you as you work. Registration is required two days prior to each event to ensure enough refreshments for everyone. Long pants and sturdy shoes are recommended. Please bring a full water bottle.

Timely and brief updates on ongoing projects

Tedesco Environmental Learning Corridor

• Phase 1 - 100 trees and shrubs were planted by volunteers from the Ames Morning Rotary and the ISU NREM Department as part of a DNR “Trees for Kids” grant. Volunteers are also providing ongoing watering efforts.

• Phase 2 - Contractors are shaping the site in preparation for trail work to begin. Phase 2 now includes almost double the previously planned amount of permeable surface on the secondary trails! The material is made with 20% recycled glass. Don’t worry, this eco-friendly surface won’t be sharp.

Partners Membership Program

In fiscal year 2017, Story County Conservation Partners set a goal of raising $20,000 towards the purchase of the Ronald “Dick” Jordan Wildlife area. Members met that goal with $19,434 in membership fees and $655.08 in miscellaneous donations. Thank you! We hope you attend the dedication (see page 2).

Last fiscal year we set of goal of $22,000 for the purchase of the Carroll Prairie north of Nevada. As of June 25, $19,394 has been contributed and we anticipate ending the fiscal year with a total of around $20,500. Again, THANK YOU! For fiscal year 2019, we have set a goal of raising $24,000 towards a new beach house at Hickory Grove Park.

Construction will occur during next year’s lake restoration. The plans include handicap accessible family-style restrooms, an outdoor rinse-off station, and an updated concession area. Part of the old beach house will be converted to an open picnic shelter. Want to help us reach this goal? Find membership information on page 11.

The plans to the left are very preliminary and are subject to change, but regardless, the new beach house will be a big improvement! The current beach house, built in 1969, has inadequate concession facilities and locker room style changing rooms/restrooms that do not meet current ADA guidelines.

Collaboration is critical to our mission of connecting people with nature and improving our natural resources. Throughout this newsletter you will read about examples of how we engage with people and organizations to achieve this mission.

Our vision for the Tedesco Environmental Learning Corridor can be summed up in the four C’s – Conservation, Collaboration, Connectivity, and Cooperation. This unique gem for our county will engage people in new ways to connect and inspire them to enjoy and conserve the outdoors.

The Corridor will be a nexus of conservation, quality of life, and community betterment. Partners and donors in this project include: Story County, Iowa State University, Iowa State University Research Park, Iowa Department of Transportation, Resource Enhancement And Protection (REAP), Ames Noon Rotary, Ames Morning Rotary, Trees for Kids, and the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation.

Lorna Sellburg, Story County resident and conservationist, offered her property at a bargain sale price to Story County to be used as a nature area. Her property along West Indian Creek has several areas of remnant native prairie. We do not have the financial ability to immediately purchase property like this when the opportunities arise. Therefore, we partner with the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation, who purchases the property and assists with fundraising to pay off the note and transfer the property to the county. Story County Conservation Partners, Story County Pheasants Forever, Big Bluestem Audubon Society, ISU Pheasants Forever, the Outdoor Alliance of Story County, and many other donors have contributed funds for this acquisition. The property, to be named Carroll Prairie, will soon become a public nature area.

“We can only effectively improve and protect what we appreciate and understand.�

In this newsletter, you will read the first of a four-part series on our efforts for improving water quality. The single most important part in water quality improvements is water quality and watershed awareness. We can only effectively improve and protect what we appreciate and understand. Recently, the South Skunk River became a designated State Water Trail. Water trails are recreational corridors and routes on rivers and lakes that provide a unique experience for water users. Water trails help re-connect Iowans to their waterways’ history, heritage, geology, fisheries, and wildlife.

Water trails provide adequate access and can include amenities like riverside camping, wild spaces, picnic areas, and restrooms. Coordinated signage and mapping systems guide users toward the types of experiences they seek, ranging from a highly social first-time river experience lasting a few hours to multi-day adventures. The designation is the final stage in a process of evaluation, community partnership building, education, and wayfinding. We are currently upgrading two river access points utilizing water trail improvement grants.

Water quality improvements are synonymous with flood mitigation, soil health, and community betterment. Another initiative you will read about is the countywide watershed assessments completed through a partnership between the Story County Board of Supervisors and the Story County Conservation Board. This project is enabling us to take specific strategic steps to improve our water quality one step at a time.

We are so excited to be able to make significant improvements to Hickory Grove Park and Lake. These improvements are the result of years of collaborative efforts with agencies, landowners in the watershed, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. We recently constructed a storm shelter/shower building in the campground and are embarking on constructing a new beach house.

Our long-term vision also includes expanded camping, cabins, and a trail ALL hunting requires connection around the lake and to Colo. Together, we will be able to make these improvements happen. non-toxic ammunition Our eye to the future is not only focused on our water and nature enjoyment opportunities but also on the health of our wildlife. The conservation board recently took the step of requiring the use of non-toxic ammunition for all hunting in all Story County managed areas. The library of knowledge on the effects of lead on humans and wildlife has long been known and expands every year. These are concerns we take to heart.

In all we do, our sights are set on the future. Together, we can chart our future, making Story County a great place to live, work, and recreate.

Water We Doing?

“Preserve, protect, restore, and enhance the quality of Story County’s ground water and surface water.”

That is the first goal of the Conservation of Natural Resources and Recreation section (chapter 4) of Story County’s Cornerstone to Capstone (C2C) Plan adopted in 2016. So, water we doing to achieve this goal? This is the first of a four-part series of articles about Story County Conservation’s efforts in water quality.

The Environmental Education unit offers four classroom programs and three outdoor experiences that educate our young citizens about water ecosystems, water pollution, best management practices, and water related recreation.

Nineteen of our summer camps also include water education and/or recreation as part of the camp experience.

This fall, Story County Conservation will team up with Prairie Rivers of Iowa to host their second Iowa River Revival’s Master River Stewards Program. The eight-week comprehensive course educates on riverine systems, including skills to paddle and navigate rivers, restoring aquatic habitat, improving water quality, and understanding policies related to floodplains, river protection, and restoration. It helps adult learners collaborate to protect and improve Iowa’s rivers, so current and future generations can enjoy these resources. Find more information on page 5 of this newsletter.

Have you noticed the new watershed and stream signs as you drive across the county? Prairie Rivers of Iowa, Story County Board of Supervisors, Story County Community Foundation, Story County Soil and Water Conservation District, and Story County Conservation teamed up to place signs on the boundary of the 11 HUC12 watersheds and their stream in the county. Through increased watershed awareness, we hope we can make responsible decisions that benefit our soil and water and our quality of life.

Story County is using a recently completed countywide watershed assessment conducted by environmental consulting firm Emmons & Olivier Resources to focus our efforts on priority water quality improvement opportunities. To the best of our knowledge, Story County is the first county in Iowa to complete a countywide assessment.

In our next issue, we will discuss an ISU U-TuRN mini grant for water testing, work being done in the county roadsides, and restoration projects in county areas.
