SHEET PILING

Story Geotech delivers steel sheet piling solutions for both temporary and permanent works across a wide range of ground conditions. Our experienced team provides efficient retaining and support systems for rail, infrastructure and civil engineering projects throughout the UK. SLOPE STABILISATION

OLE FOUNDATIONS

Story Geotech has extensive experience delivering Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) foundation solutions across the rail sector. Working closely with Story Contracting, we provide fully integrated foundation packages for projects of all sizes.

Our expertise includes sheet pile, screw pile, helical pile, gravity pad and precast foundation systems, supported by a substantial in-house fleet of RRVs and specialist plant.

KING POST RETAINING WALLS

King post retaining walls offer a fast, versatile and cost-effective solution for temporary and permanent earth retention. Formed using steel H-beams, Universal Columns or channel sections installed within rotary bored, CFA or SFA piles, the system incorporates precast concrete, prestressed concrete or timber infill panels to provide effective ground support.

Widely used across rail, infrastructure and flood defence projects, king post walls can be constructed with or without ground anchors, delivering a highly adaptable solution for challenging ground conditions and constrained sites.

ROPE ACCESS SOLUTIONS

Story Geotech provides specialist rope access and geotechnical drilling services for steep and vertical ground, including soil slopes, rock faces, retaining walls and other difficult-toaccess structures.

With IRATA-qualified technicians, NVQ-trained drillers and professionally qualified engineers, we safely deliver stabilisation and drilling solutions where conventional access methods are not practical. Our teams operate both sled-mounted and machine-mounted drilling systems, supported by an extensive fleet of RRVs and specialist plant to provide longreach and conventional access solutions.

Our adaptable mobile drill rigs can be fitted with low ground pressure wheels for challenging terrain and are equipped with 2m and 3m drill masts capable of drilling to depths of up to 20 metres.

Ground Investigation Story Geotech delivers comprehensive ground investigation services that provide the accurate data needed to inform safe, sustainable and cost-effective engineering decisions. Combining traditional investigation techniques with modern technology, we assess soil, rock and groundwater conditions across a wide range of challenging rail, infrastructure and development environments.

CORING

Our coring services provide valuable information on the condition and composition of existing structures and subsurface materials.

Using electric, hydraulic and rotary drilling equipment, we recover high-quality samples from concrete, masonry and rock formations for engineering assessment, material characterisation and laboratory testing where required.

WINDOW SAMPLING

Window sampling provides a fast and effective means of assessing near-surface ground conditions. Utilising specialist rigs and dynamic sampling techniques, we recover representative soil samples and collect geotechnical data to support site investigations, foundation design and preliminary assessments while minimising disruption to project programmes.

GEOTECHNICAL TESTING

Our geotechnical testing services provide the data required to understand engineering behaviour and ground performance. Working alongside UKAS-accredited laboratory partners, we undertake a wide range of testing programmes including classification, strength, compaction and consolidation assessments, enabling informed decision-making throughout project development and delivery.

ROTARY BOREHOLES

Rotary borehole drilling enables detailed investigation of dense soils, gravels and rock formations. Using specialist drilling rigs and a range of drilling techniques, we obtain high-quality samples and geological data to support geotechnical design, risk assessment, slope stability analysis and infrastructure planning in complex ground conditions.

INSTRUMENTATION MONITORING

Story Geotech installs and manages monitoring systems that provide ongoing assessment of ground movement, groundwater behaviour and asset performance. Solutions include inclinometers, piezometers, gas standpipes and automated monitoring equipment, helping clients identify risks early, validate design assumptions and protect critical infrastructure throughout its lifecycle

CONE PENETROMETER TEST (CPTu)

Cone Penetrometer Testing (CPTu) provides rapid, high-resolution information on subsurface conditions by continuously measuring soil resistance, sleeve friction and pore water pressure. The technique supports foundation design, earthworks assessment and ground modelling, delivering reliable geotechnical data with minimal disturbance and excellent repeatability across projects.

ROAD RAIL VEHICLES

Our fleet of more than 130 Road Rail Vehicles provides safe, reliable access to rail infrastructure throughout the UK. Supporting geotechnical investigations, piling operations and construction activities, RRVs enable the efficient transportation of personnel, materials and equipment while maintaining compliance with industry and client requirements.

TRACKED RIGS

Our tracked drilling rigs deliver versatility across a wide range of ground investigation and geotechnical applications. Designed for operation in restricted and challenging environments, they support rotary drilling, sampling, coring and site investigation activities while providing reliable performance across varied terrain and ground conditions.

PILE DRIVERS

Pile driving equipment forms a key part of our foundation delivery capability. Suitable for installing a variety of pile types and ground support systems, our equipment provides efficient, accurate installation solutions for rail, infrastructure, highways and development projects across a range of ground conditions.

IMPACT HAMMERS

Our range of impact hammers provides the power and reliability required for pile installation and ground support works. Compatible with multiple piling systems and site requirements, they enable efficient energy transfer during installation, helping achieve programme certainty and consistent foundation performance.

AUGER DRILLS AND DRIVERS

Auger drills and drivers support a variety of ground engineering applications, including borehole drilling, foundation installation and anchoring works. Their versatility enables efficient operation across varying ground conditions, providing a dependable solution for projects requiring accuracy, flexibility and productivity.

MOVAX DROP HAMMER AND SIDE GRIP

The Movax Side Grip and Drop Hammer attachment system provides a versatile piling solution, particularly within restricted rail environments. Capable of lifting, positioning and driving multiple pile types with precision, the equipment improves installation efficiency while maintaining high standards of safety and operational control.

TEI

TEI specialist drilling attachments provide a flexible solution for installing ground anchors, micropiles, soil nails and slope stabilisation systems. Designed for restricted-access and complex environments, TEI equipment enables efficient drilling and installation while supporting demanding geotechnical and civil engineering applications.

MEWPs

Our fleet of MEWPs provides safe, reliable access for working at height, particularly during inspections, examinations and engineering works on structures and tunnels. Designed for use in challenging rail environments, they support maintenance, survey and installation activities while improving safety, productivity and access flexibility.

Haulage

ALO Support

Maintenance

Operating our own fleet of eight FORS accredited haulage vehicles enables us to transport our machines to projects as and when required, even at late notice.

Our team has a deep understanding of ALO, with expertise in delivering projects in compliance with Network Rail ATP 04 standards. From the planning to final delivery, we work collaboratively with all relevant stakeholders and construction teams to develop a safe, efficient, and fully compliant ALO working methodology.

When supporting our clients work, we provide a market leading product support service across our depots and sites.

By using our own in-house planning and delivery teams, we provide our clients with confidence that machines will be delivered to site safely and on-time, reducing the risk of programme disruption. Strategic planning of our transport also enables us to reduce the carbon output of our operations.

Our hi-ab wagons also enable us to provide just-in-time delivery for clients, reducing the security risk of storing machines and materials on site.

Our structured approach ensures that all ALO activities are carefully planned and executed to the highest standards.

We operate a modern, versatile fleet of rigs and plant machinery, enabling us to deploy the right specialist equipment for each project and maximise productivity.

Each of our depots are home to a dedicated maintenance team, who ensure all equipment and attachments are compliant and in peak condition prior to being transported to site.

We also provide a team of Fitters across our sites, who are equipped with extensive toolkits within specialist fitted-out vehicles and mobile workshops, enabling them to resolve any issues on-site quickly and efficiently.

Sustainability

Safety is at the heart of our operations. The business works collaboratively with clients during the planning phase to remove risks, develop safe methodologies and support the delivery of projects in compliance with industry standards, including Network Rail ATP 04 requirements for Adjacent Line Open (ALO) working. Dedicated teams support project planning, ALO implementation and site-based safety activities to ensure works are delivered safely and efficiently.

We are committed to delivering sustainable and efficient plant and geotechnical solutions. The business actively monitors OEM performance data to manage fleet emissions and has developed a long-term fleet strategy that continues to increase the number of Stage V engine machines operating across its fleet.

Significant investment has been made in plant technology and fleet upgrades to enhance workforce protection. Many Road Rail Vehicles are fitted with recording cameras and Human Form Recognition systems to reduce plant and people interface risks, while positive pressure filtered cabs help protect operators from silica dust exposure.

All machines are maintained and upgraded in-house to meet the latest industry standards, supported by dedicated maintenance teams and mobile fitters operating across the UK. Our commitment to safety is further reinforced through its NSARaccredited training facilities and experienced technical training team, ensuring operators are trained and assessed to the highest standards.

To reduce environmental impact, we work closely with clients to optimise project methodologies and maximise machine utilisation, enabling individual machines to undertake multiple activities and significantly reducing haulage movements.

The company has also invested in a renewed haulage fleet, delivering approximately a 20% reduction in fuel consumption across transport operations. By combining innovative engineering solutions, modern equipment and collaborative project delivery, we help clients reduce waste, improve efficiency and lower the environmental footprint of infrastructure projects.
