Come summer, Berliners waste no time in moving their lives outdoors in order to enjoy the sun to the max. Then the city radiates a special atmosphere like it does at no other time of year. The people flock to open air events, go dancing in Monbijou Park, party it up on the Badeschiff riverside beach bar in Kreuzberg, catch a good flick on warm summer nights at the Friedrichshain Open Air Cinema or stroll along the river Spree to pop into any of the many beach locales. Summertime brings out Berlin’s full potential and is always worth the trip.

Hier findet sich eine ganz besondere Oase für wahre Sommerliebhaber – der rund 13 Kilometer lange Elbstrand.

Auch die New York Times ist dieser Meinung und kürte diesen „place to be“ im Mai 2017 zu einem der zehn Lieblingsorte am Wasser in Europa.

You don’t always have to head to the sea to get that much-longed-for summer holiday feeling. Just grab your sunglasses, don your coolest beach outfit, and slip into your flip-flops. Hamburg ahoy, let’s go to the beach! If you want to feel some sand between your toes, you’ll get what you’re looking for in the middle of the big city. Waiting for you is a very special oasis for summer fun: the 13 km long Elbstrand. Even the New York Times declared this riverside beach to be “the place to be” when, in May 2017, it printed a list of its ten favourite places on the water in Europe.

When the summer heat starts cooking up the city, thank goodness for parks and gardens like Schlossplatz, Schlossgarten or Bärenschlössle. Of course, you can always cool off in one of the open-air pools, or at a beer garden. All in all, Stuttgart is one of Germany’s greenest big cities. Not to mention a city of culture, with lots of summer festivals that are worth checking out. One highlight is Jazzopen Stuttgart from 12 to 22 July, with superstars from jazz, blues, soul and pop at five locations and a party atmosphere that goes late into the night. On Christopher Street Day (13 to 29 July), “Stuggi” shows that it is anything but square. The city’s cosmopolitan flair is especially present at the Summer Festival of Cultures from 17 to 22 July.

“Die Hitze der Stadt ist im Sommer brutal, da man fürchterlich matt ist, wird das Leben zur Qual …“, dröhnt Rainhard Fendrichs Austropop-Hit aus der Lautsprecherbox.

Doch eigentlich ist Wien eh ganz anders, denn es hat ein riesiges Naherholungsgebiet mitten in der Stadt: die Donauinsel, knapp daran anschließend die Alte Donau und – Geheimtipp! – das Kaiserwasser. Mit der U-Bahn-Linie U1 in wenigen Minuten erreichbar, warten auf der Insel Sport und Vergnügen. Vor allem Jogger, Skater und Radfahrer machen hier Tempo. Wasserspaß und Action versprechen Badebuchten, eine Wasserrutsche, ein Wasserspielplatz, die weltgrößte Trampolinanlage, ein künstlicher Wildwasserkanal, ein Wasserschilift und Bootsverleih und noch viel mehr.

Summer in the city is hot, brutally hot. Good thing that Vienna is different, with its own enormous outdoor recreational area in the middle of the city consisting of the Danube Island, the Old Danube and – insider tip – Kaiserwasser Lake. Easily reached by underground line U1, Danube Island is 21 kilometres of recreation and sports, above all for joggers, skaters and bicyclists. Aquatic fun and action await at the many bathing facilities with flat beaches, natural bathing areas, a waterslide, a water playground for the kids, the world’s largest trampoline park, an artificial white-water canal, a surfing school, a water ski lift, and boat rental.

Schiff ahoi! So tönt es im Sommer von den Dächern hoch über Linz – ein 20 Meter langes und 2,5 Tonnen schweres Schiff thront im “Höhenrausch“ und lädt zu neuen Ausblicken auf die Stadt ein. Nach einer erfrischenden Abkühlung am urbanen Donaustrand direkt in der City lockt ein weiteres Highlight: eine Bootstour durch die Mural Harbor Galerie im Linzer Hafen. Hier wird die Entwicklung der Industriestadt zur modernen Kultur- und Kreativstadt besonders deutlich.

Ship ahoy! This summer, don’t be surprised if you see a 20-metre long ship weighing 2.5 tonnes flying high above the rooftops of Linz. Part of an annual art project by the name of Höhenrausch, the ship is open for visitors to climb and take in unique views of the city. Then you have some time to cool off at the beach along the Danube before another highlight beckons: a boat tour through Mural Harbour Gallery in the Port of Linz. The gallery is clear proof that Linz has moved from being an industrial city to a modern place of culture and creativity.

ch verlasse das gemütliche Hotel, überquere die Alpenstraße und gehe hoch motiviert schnellen Schrittes entlang der Salzach Richtung Altstadt. Ehrwürdige Villen säumen das Flussufer, üppiges Grün neben dem asphaltierten Fuß- und Radweg weisen die bewegte Salzach in ihre Grenzen. Franz-Hinterholzer-Kai heißt die Promenade. Unter der Karolinenbrücke noch durch und schon bin ich beim Mozartsteg angelangt. Bevor ich in die Altstadt eintauche, stärke ich mich noch mit einem würzig-süßen Chai Latte vom winzigen „We love Coffee“ im ehemaligen Mauthäusl – übrigens Salzburgs kleinstes Kaffeehaus.

Das ehemals mächtige Michaelstor heißt mich willkommen und führt mich direkt auf den Mozartplatz, den der Namensgeber von seinem hohen Marmorsockel aus überblickt. Heute ignoriere ich das geschäftige Treiben rund um die Getreidegasse und schlendere gemütlich über den großzügigen Residenzplatz und den Kapitelplatz mit dem unübersehbaren Kunstwerk von Stephan Balkenhol: “Sphaera“ (der Mann auf der goldenen Kugel – gerne auch „Mozartkugel“ genannt) in Richtung Festungsgasse. Hier könnte ich jetzt die Festungsbahn nehmen, um die bevorstehenden Höhenmeter bequem zu überwinden, doch ich möchte lieber den malerischen Fußweg genießen. Vorbei am Petersfriedhof, der sich eng an den Festungsberg schmiegt, spürt man bald den Anstieg. Wenige Meter weiter würde sich der Stieglkeller für eine zünftige Jause – ich meinte Pause – unter alten Kastanienbäumen mit Blick über die Dächer der Stadt anbieten. Doch diesen Genuss hebe ich mir für morgen auf.

Die Festungsgasse schlängelt sich entlang alter Häuser höher und höher. Wer Lust und Luft genug hat, kann auf dem Oskar-Kokoschka-Weg Richtung Festung Hohensalzburg abzweigen und sein Ziel in wenigen Minuten bei Kaffee und Kuchen genießen. Ich folge jedoch dem Doktor-Ludwig-Prähauser-Weg weiter hinauf auf den Mönchsberg, durch kühlen Wald und über Wiesen. Immer wieder blitzt ein Stück der Stadt durch die Bäume, mit dem Häusermeer am Fluss im Hintergrund. Die Aussichtsterrasse der Karolinenhöhe eröffnet mir einen sensationellen Panoramablick weit ins Land. Technik-Fans sollten auch einen kurzen Stopp im Wasser.Spiegel einplanen. Hier wird Geschichte und Gegenwart der Wasserversorgung der Stadt Salzburg gezeigt, von der Herkunft, Qualität und Technik über Stationen zum Ausprobieren und Wasserverkostung bis zu Hunderten Exponaten, alles in einem Teil des Hochbehälters Mönchsberg mit 25.000 m³ Fassungsvermögen.

Jetzt ist eine Stärkung angesagt, also marschiere ich noch ein Stückchen bis zur mächtigen Befestigungsanlage der Bürgerwehr. Diese wurde etwa zwischen 1465 und 1480 errichtet und trennt den Mönchsberg in einen sogenannten inneren und einen äußeren Teil. Hier kehre ich ein, und zwar in der Stadtalm, für mich einer der schönsten Plätze hoch über Salzburg – auch hier ein unbeschreiblicher Ausblick. Schwere Holztische unter großen Sonnenschirmen laden zum Platznehmen ein. Ich entscheide mich für eine zünftige Almjaus‘n mit Sommerspritzer, passend zu meiner Wanderung, und genieße gemütlich den beruhigenden Gedanken, dass es bis zum Museum der Moderne und dem Aufzug, der mich wieder hinunter in die belebte Stadt bringt, nur noch zehn Minuten Fußweg sind.

Ausgeruht und gestärkt, kann es weitergehen. Meine Uhr bestätigt exakt die Wegzeit bis zum Museum, das beeindruckende zeitgenössische Kunst zeigt. Aktuell begeistern die Ausstellungen Resonanz von Exil und Anna Boghiguian – mein Programm für den Sonntagnachmittag. Noch ein

letzter Blick aus der Vogelperspektive von der großzügigen Terrasse des Restaurants m32, dann nehme ich den Mönchsbergaufzug und schwebe hinab in die Altstadt. Jetzt bin ich bereit für eine gepflegte Kaffeepause auf dem Grünmarkt am Universitätsplatz, bevor ich mich, ausgestattet mit sonnengereiften Pfirsichen und Erdbeeren, auf den Rückweg ins ARCOTEL Castellani mache. Die paar Schritte werde ich auch noch schaffen.

Und wenn ich wieder zu Hause bin, kann ich allen erzählen, dass ich in Salzburg wandern war – mitten in der Stadt.

I

leave the cosy hotel behind me, cross the street and stride briskly and full of motivation along the river Salzach towards the Old Town. Stately villas line the river, and lush green banks next to the asphalt hiking and biking trail keep the rowdy Salzach in its course. Franz-Hinterholzer-Kai is the promenade’s name. Past Karolinenbrücke (Caroline Bridge) I arrive at Mozartsteg Bridge. Before I dip into the Old Town, I get some much-needed energy with a sweet and spicy chai latte at the tiny We Love Coffee – Salzburg’s smallest coffeehouse – in the former toll booth by the bridge.

The once majestic St. Michael’s Gate welcomes me and leads me straight to Mozartplatz, a large courtyard with a statue of the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Today I ignore the hustle and bustle in Getreidegasse and stroll leisurely over to

Residenzplatz, a sumptuous 16th century square with baroque fountain, and Kapitelplatz, home to a conspicuous work of art by Stephan Balkenhol titled “Sphaera” (a.k.a. Man on the Golden Sphere), and on towards Festungsgasse. Here I could take the Festungsbahn funicular railway to avoid having to climb up to Hohensalzburg Castle, but I choose to enjoy the picturesque footpath. Passing St. Peter’s Cemetery, which lies nestled into the foot of Festungsberg hill, you soon feel the climb. After just a short distance, I come to Stieglkeller, which would make for a perfect lunch break – complete with views of the city from beneath the shady chestnut trees on the restaurant terrace. But I decide to save this treat for another day.

The path winds its way along old houses, climbing higher and higher. Now it’s time for another decision. If I take the Oskar-Kokoschka-Weg to Hohensalzburg Castle, I’m just a couple of minutes away from enjoying a cup of coffee and a delicious slice of cake. But I choose to follow Doktor-LudwigPrähauser-Weg further uphill, through cool wooded areas and across fields and meadows. Every now and then, I catch a flash of the city through the trees, a glimpse of the sea of houses down by the river. But the real treat is waiting at Karolinenhöhe, where a viewing platform presents me with a breathtaking panoramic view far and wide. Technology buffs should put in a quick stop at Wasser.Spiegel, a compact museum featuring exhibitions on the past and present of Salzburg’s water supply. Here you can learn more about water origin, quality and technology, taste the water, and marvel at a hundred different exhibits in a part of the 25,000 m³ Mönchsberg Reservoir.

Now it really is time for a bite to eat, so I march on to Bürgerwehr Mönchsberg. Built between 1465 and 1480, this mighty fortification divides Mönchsberg into an inner and an outer section. Here I call in at the Stadtalm, one of the most beautiful places above the city of Salzburg – with an equally beautiful view. Heavy wooden tables beneath large umbrellas make this a cosy place for lunch. I choose a properly portioned “Almjaus’n” – a plate of ham, cheese, bacon, pickles and bread – with a summer spritzer, just the right thing after my hike, and savour the reassuring thought that it’s just another ten minutes to the Museum der Moderne Salzburg and the lift that will take me back down to the bustling city.

Rested and full of renewed energy, I continue on my way. Ten minutes later, my watch confirms my previously estimated time of arrival at the museum, which, by the way, is filled to the bursting with impressive works of contemporary art.

The current exhibitions are Resonance of Exile and Anna Boghiguian – my programme for Sunday afternoon. After a last bird’s-eye view from the spacious terrace of the m32 restaurant, I take the Mönchsberg Lift and float back down to the Old Town. Now I’m ready for a good old-fashioned coffee break at Grünmarkt on Universitätsplatz before, armed with sun-ripened peaches and strawberries, I make my way back to ARCOTEL Castellani. Those few last steps should be a piece of cake.

When I get back home, I’m going to tell everyone about my hike in Salzburg – in the middle of the city.

ARCOTEL UPDATE

ARCOTEL Hotels expandiert erneut und unterschreibt einen Pachtvertrag für 4-Sterne-Hotel in Dresden. In der Hauptstadt des deutschen Bundeslandes Sachsen entsteht ein neues Stadtviertel: Die trendige Hafen City mit Geschäften, Büros und dem neuen ARCOTEL Bleasure Dresden. Mitte Mai unterschrieb en die österreichische Hotelgruppe und der Dresdner Initiator USD Immobilien den Pachtvertrag.

Die Eröffnung ist für 2020 geplant.

ARCOTEL Hotels continues to expand and has signed a lease agreement for a 4-star hotel in Dresden. ARCOTEL Bleasure Dresden forms part of Hafen City, a development project in the capital of the German state of Saxony to create a new city district that will also include new shops and offices. The Austrian hotel group and the Dresdenbased real estate developer USD Immobilien GmbH signed the lease agreement in mid-May. The hotel is scheduled to open in 2020.

Rund 400 Gäste folgten der Einladung und erlebten eine farbenprächtige Ballnacht. Küchenchef Johann Schwarz servierte ein 4-Gänge-Menü mit exklusiven Kreationen wie Vegan-Shot mit hausgemachter Focaccia oder Carpaccio von der Chioggia-Rübe mit asiatischem Karfiol und Birnen-Chutney. Auch die Weine sowie die Cocktails von Barchef Johann Frühwirt waren natürlich vegan. DJs, Show-Tanzeinlagen und Publikumsquadrille sorgten viele Stunden für gute Stimmung. “Vegan into the future!” This was the motto of the sixth Vegan Ball hosted by the Vegan Society of Austria on 24 February at ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser in Vienna. Some 400 guests followed the invitation and experienced a colourful ball night. Chef de cuisine Johann Schwarz served a 4-course menu with exclusive creations such as vegan shot with homemade focaccia or carpaccio from Chioggia beet with Asian cauliflower and pear chutney. The wines and the cocktails by bar chef Johann Frühwirt were also vegan, of course. DJs, dance performances and mass quadrille made for lots of fun and good times. The guests also included social media influencers like YouTuber JANAklar, Aquamarin and Simon Mathis.

In early February, the 2018 Gala Night of Sport was celebrated in the Brucknerhaus in Linz. Dazu wurden pro Gang zwei Weine aus den Weinregionen des jeweiligen Landes gereicht. Die Gäste genossen gesellige Abende mit viel Spaß und Spannung und kürten die Runden- und Gesamtsieger durch Punktevergabe. Gewonnen haben auch die Gäste selbst, nämlich einen unvergesslichen Abend!

Clear the ring! Restaurant Handwerk has been chosen as the venue for a series of exciting national competitions for food and wine. Gourmets and connoisseurs got their money’s worth from March through June when Austria took on the rest of the world! Several famous food nations like South Africa, Italy, France and Germany came to challenge Austria. Chef de cuisine Sandro Muffat served his sophisticated re-interpretations of typical national cuisine. Each course was accompanied by two wines from the wine regions of the respective country. The guests enjoyed an evening full of fun and excitement while awarding points to select round and overall winners. Though the real winners were the guests themselves. After all, they were rewarded with an unforgettable evening.

Das ARCOTEL Nike Linz wurde Anfang März vom österreichischen Monatsmagazin “Wirtschaftsnachrichten” mit dem begehrten Titel “Businesshotel des Jahres 2017” ausgezeichnet. Das sympathische 4-Sterne-Hotel überzeugte mit Wohnqualität, Lage und Service. Direktorin Gundula Schimek nahm die Auszeichnung stellvertretend für das ganze Team entgegen.

“Storytelling in Hotellerie und Tourismus” war das Thema des ARCOTEL Hotels Branchentreffs – dieses Mal im “Livingroom” des ARCOTEL Donauzentrum. 40 Vertreter aus Politik, Hotellerie und Marketing folgten der Einladung zu diesem spannenden Abend. Eine Podiumsdiskussion mit Sabrina Oswald, StorytellingExpertin und Managing Partner der Futura GmbH, Christian Spath, Buchautor, Professor Harald Schreiber, bildender Künstler, Industrie-Designer und Architekt, sowie Martin Lachout, Vorstand der ARCOTEL Hotel AG zeigte die emotionale Bedeutung von Geschichten und die Umsetzung für Destinationen und Hotels auf. Moderiert wurde die Diskussion von Messe & Event-Chefredakteur Christoph Berndl.

it der Aktion “Give Bees a Chance“ haben die ARCOTEL Hotels im Jahr 2015 unter der persönlichen Schirmherrschaft von Dr. Renate Wimmer, Eigentümer der Hotelgruppe, eine Initiative für den Erhalt der Bienenpopulationen ins Leben gerufen. Mit Ende 2017 waren es 34.185 Bienenfreunde, deren beachtliche Spendensumme die Unterstützung zahlreicher Projekte ermöglichte, die sich für den Schutz und Erhalt von Bienen engagieren. Diese ARCOTEL-Initiative wird auch dieses Jahr wieder engagierte Bienenschutzprojekte in Deutschland und Österreich unterstützen.

eutsche Wildtier Stiftung (“German Wildlife Foundation”) is joining the Hamburg foundation Stiftung Ausgleich Altenwerder (“Altenwerder Compensation Foundation”) to create flowering meadows for endangered wild bees on a 90,000 square metre piece of land.

The land in the Wilhelmsburg quarter of the city of Hamburg belongs to Stiftung Ausgleich Altenwerder, which will oversee the sowing of the seeds and will manage the land. ARCOTEL Hotels has donated 10,000 euros to the project.

f you’ve been to Hamburg at least once if your life, you’ll probably know the Fish Market by the Elbe. Every Sunday, up to 70,000 people come here to enjoy the location and barter over fresh fish, fresh fruits and exotic plants. The market brings together early birds and night owls with its blend of live music at sunrise and a view of the harbour. But there are many other markets in Hamburg that are just as popular, not just for their products but also because of the people and their life stories. STORiES magazine had a look around.

ISEMARKT This farmers market, which stretches for 600 metres between U-Bahn stations Eppendorfer Baum and Hoheluftbrücke, has been called the most beautiful farmers market by visitors from all over the world. The lively market is open Tuesdays and Fridays with a wide selection offered by the more than 200 vendors that includes fruits and vegetables, farm-fresh eggs, local meat, brick-oven bread, noodles, oils, cheese and coffee. Plus, of course, freshly fished fish: North Sea sole, bream, turbot and bass, squid and shrimp.

The selection will be sure to make your mouth water. A good idea then is a fish sandwich for a little something in between!

Sun, wind and rain – Ali and his team are always there for the customers. For him, the market is more than just a place of work; it is a meeting place. The friendly atmosphere that exists with his coworkers, customers and friends makes the market life so special for him. Ali knows his way around fruits and vegetables and gladly helps his customers with competent advice and valuable tips for buying, storing and preparing. That’s something his clientele loves.

TARIK I MUSHROOMS Tarik has been a fixture on the Isemarkt for the past 19 years. He loves the market’s central location. For him, the market is so great because it has something for everyone. He goes into raptures when he tells of all the changes that he has witnessed over the years. Today’s customers are much more conscious about what they eat, he says, and more interested in quality. The mushroom expert is particularly popular with the vegan community, especially because he really knows his trade. “When I do something, then it has to make sense!” Meanwhile he even delivers his mushrooms to award-winning chefs and television productions. ast 1.000 Kilometer liegen zwischen Wien und Hamburg und doch sind die Städte in vieler Hinsicht verbunden. Wien zelebriert das Leben im Grätzel genauso wie Hamburg die Szene im Kiez. Etwas schräg, aber sehr gemütlich, zeichnen sich beide Städte durch hohe Lebensqualität aus und zählen deshalb zu den Top-Destinationen für Städtereisen in Europa. Schließlich machen auch Kunst und Kultur Wien wie Hamburg zu Besuchermagneten, besonders im Sommer.

Apropos Kunst: Im Sommer ist natürlich Open Air angesagt – und so manche Bühne steht im Freien. Reich an Ideen und jungen Künstlern versetzen Wien und Hamburg Betrachter und Kunstliebhaber immer wieder ins Staunen. So gelang es Daniela Enzi, der langjährigen Prokuristin und Kommunikationsverantwortlichen des Wiener Museumsquartiers, durch die Platzierung von funktionellen, anfangs sehr diskutierten Plastikmöbeln in gewagten Farben das großzügige Kunstareal wieder in den Mittelpunkt der Stadt zu rücken und Besucher zum Verweilen einzuladen. 2002 wurden die ersten Designelemente, deren ausgeklügelte Geometrie der Stapelkunst keine Grenzen setzt, für Punschstände aufgestellt. Seither sind die Enzis, die jetzt in zweiter Generation Enzos heißen, zwischen den riesigen Kuben des Mumok, des Leopold Museums und des Wiener Messepalasts nicht mehr wegzudenken. Das gilt auch seit über fünf Jahren für Hamburg und sein St. Pauli.

Doch es wäre nicht St. Pauli, wenn die Geschichte hier zu Ende wäre. Günter Jung, Hoteldirektor seit der ersten Stunde, dehnte den Hamburger Kiez durch Interaktionen junger Künstler bis an den legendären Standort “Platz am Trichter“ vor dem ARCOTEL Onyx aus. Thomas Volgmann, Musiker und gelernter Bühnenbildmaler aus St. Pauli, gestaltete 2012 als Erster zwei Enzis künstlerisch. Der eine erzählt dem Betrachter die Geschichte vom 1805 erbauten Trichter, dem einst berühmten Unterhaltungsetablissement im Hamburger Hafenviertel und heutigen Standort des 4-SterneSuperior Hotels, der andere interpretiert die Geschichte der ARCOTEL-Destinationen über die verbindenden Flüsse in jeder der Städte.

Sie fragen sich, was mit dem dritten Enzi geschah? Seine Bestimmung war es, den Bogen vom brandneuen Hotel nach außen zu spannen. Zur Eröffnung erstrahlte er in Onyx-Gelb, der Leitfarbe des einzigartigen Hauses an der Reeperbahn.

Als extravagantes Gästebuch anlässlich der Eröffnungsfeier zeigt er bis heute zahlreiche Unterschriften und Widmungen berühmter Gäste.

St. Pauli ist Tag und Nacht erfüllt vom Kiez-Leben und speziell in den Sommermonaten ist die Reeperbahn ein beliebtes Parkett für alle. Deshalb wurde der Enzi-Park stetig erweitert und der Platz vor dem ARCOTEL Onyx entwickelte sich zum beliebten Treffpunkt der Stadt. In 2018, dem Jahr des friedlichen Miteinanders, wurden als Zeichen der Solidarität mit der örtlichen Gemeinschaft BID Reeperbahn+ zwei neue Enzos in der aussagekräftigen Farbe “Lila“ vor dem ARCOTEL Onyx platziert.

Doch die Geschichte ist noch lange nicht aus, die Welt dreht sich weiter und auch an der Reeperbahn gibt es keinen Stillstand, die nächste Enzo-Aktion ist schon geplant …

ienna and Hamburg are nearly 1,000 kilometres apart, yet the two cities have many things in common. Vienna celebrates life in its “Grätzl”, Hamburg in its “Kiez” – that’s the local terminology used to refer to a city neighbourhood. A bit quirky, but very welcoming, both cities have a high standard of living that ranks them among the top destinations for city breaks in Europe.

And finally, art and culture in Vienna and Hamburg make the two cities popular tourist magnets, especially in the summer.

Speaking of art and culture: summer is open-air season, and more than a few stages are outdoors. With a wealth of ideas and young artists, Vienna and Hamburg consistently amaze and astonish beholders and lovers of art. In 2002, Daniela Enzi, the commissioner and communication representative of Vienna’s Museumsquartier, took on the task of revitalising the courtyard of the museum complex. Her idea involved getting visitors to stay around to breathe life into the area. The result were the Enzis, multifunctional plastic furniture with a unique geometry for countless stacking combinations. The first Enzis were set up for the Christmas punch stands that year. Today one can’t imagine the space between the Museum of Modern Art, the Leopold Museum and the Kunsthalle Wien without the Enzis – or the Enzos, as the second generation is called.

The same has been true for Hamburg’s St. Pauli district for the past five years. Since the opening of ARCOTEL Onyx in 2012 at the heart of one the world’s most (in)famous streets, the Reeperbahn, the Enzis have become an eyecatcher and multicultural stop-off for visitors and passers-by. It all started with three Enzis that Dr. Renate Wimmer, the owner of the ARCOTEL Group, sent from Vienna as a welcome gift to the new member of the family and to symbolically establish a piece of Vienna in Hamburg.

But it wouldn’t be St. Pauli if the story ended here. Günter Jung, General Manager from the beginning, got a group of young artists to help extend the Kiez out to the legendary square Beim Trichter in front of ARCOTEL Onyx. Thomas Volgmann, a musician and set designer from St. Pauli, artistically embellished the first of two Enzis in 2012. It tells the observer the story of the Trichter, an entertainment palace built in 1805 at the place where the 4-star sujperior hotel stands today. The second Enzi interprets the story of the ARCOTEL destinations through the rivers that run through each of the cities.

So what happened to the third Enzi, you ask? Its destiny was to form a link from the brand-new hotel to the outside. At the hotel opening, it was painted in Onyx yellow, the colour of the unique hotel on the Reeperbahn. Used as a somewhat different kind of guestbook for the grand opening celebration, the chair today still bears the signatures and dedications of the famous guests from that night.

St. Pauli is filled with local life day and night, and especially during the summer months the Reeperbahn is a popular stage for all. Reason enough to continually expand the Enzi park and turn the space in front of ARCOTEL Onyx into a popular meeting point in the city. In 2018, as a sign of solidarity with the Reeperbahn+ Business Improvement District, two new Enzos were placed in front of ARCOTEL Onyx in the powerful colour purple.

But the story is not over yet, the world keeps on turning and things keep moving on the Reeperbahn. The next Enzo action has already been planned…

SPORT CITY BERLIN CYCLING Rund 500.000 Biker sind in der City täglich unterwegs und ein typischer Teil des Berliner Lebens – der Hype ums Fahrradfahren ist ungebrochen. Rund 1.000 Kilometer Radwege schlängeln sich durch die Stadt, die sich mit dem Rad gut erkunden lässt. Diese Art des Sightseeings wird immer attraktiver, größere Entfernungen sind mit bequemen CityBikes beinahe spielend zu bewältigen. Reizvoll sind Spritztouren durch den Tiergarten, Berlins grüne Lunge, oder zu einem der vielen Seen im Stadtgebiet. Und der Mauerradweg rund um Berlin macht Geschichte erfahrbar.

Ausgehend vom Schlossplatz im Zentrum, führen zwölf Radrouten in die Außenbezirke, sodass ein weitläufiges Streckennetz auf Nebenstraßen zur Verfügung steht. SKATING Die Fortbewegung auf Rollen ist bereits ein sportlicher Longseller.

Ob idyllisch am Wasser entlang oder auf speziellen Strecken, mit Inlineskates oder Skateboard erlebt man Berlin abenteuerlich schnell. Es macht einfach Spaß, egal ob Sie Anfänger oder Profi sind. Inliner anziehen und los geht’s!

Der Kronprinzessinnenweg, ein 4 Kilometer langer, asphaltierter Weg durch den Grunewald, entlang der Stadtautobahn Avus, ist besonders beliebt. In Stadtteil Schöneberg gibt es eine ca. 1,5 Kilometer lange Strecke im Hans-Baluschek-Park zwischen Bahnhof Südkreuz und dem S-Bahnhof Priesterweg. Am Tempelhofer Feld können Skater auf den ehemaligen Start- und Landebahnen ihre Längen ziehen.

SLACKLINING Sieht einfach aus, ist aber eine mentale und körperliche Herausforderung: Der Balanceakt auf dem schwankenden Gummiseil fasziniert und macht manche süchtig. Einfach einen Gurt von Baum zu Baum spannen und der “Seiltanz“ kann begonnen. Slacklining hat in Berlin schon viele Anhänger und die zahlreichen Parks eignen sich perfekt für einen spannend-lustigen Nachmittag.

BLACKMINTON Sie können nicht schlafen und suchen nach dem ultimativen Kick? Kein Problem in Berlin. Für solche Notfälle wurden Blackminton, Moonlight-Bowling oder Black Table Tennis erfunden. Diese DunkelSportarten werden unter Schwarzlicht ausgeübt und versprechen auch weit nach Sonnenuntergang reichlich Spaß. Wenn “Nachtaktive in Kriegsbemalung“, sprich fluoreszierenden Bodypaintingfarben, leuchtenden Bällen (“Night Speeder“) nachjagen, untermalt mit Partymusik, dann wird die Nacht schnell zum Tag. BOULDERN Genau genommen, hat Berlin eigentlich alles zu bieten, nur keine Berge. Klettern kann man allerdings auch ohne Felsen, wie die große Fangemeinde in der hippen Hauptstadt weiß. Entsprechend groß ist daher das Angebot an Boulderhallen, Outdoor-Klettergärten und ähnlichen Anlagen, die einen Hauch von Freiheit erleben lassen.

WALDPARCOURS Berlin aus einer anderen Perspektive kann man in luftigen Höhen erleben. Tarzan-Ambitionen ausleben kann man im Waldhochseilgarten Jungfernheide oder im Kletterwald Wuhlheide. Nach Anlegen der Gurte und kurzer Einführung in das Sicherungssystem stehen unterschiedlich anspruchsvolle Parcours zur Wahl. Stunden mit Spaß und Spannung für die ganze Familie sind garantiert.

Waldparcours

CYCLING Some 500,000 cyclists cross the city every day. Cycling is a regular part of life in Berlin and a trend that appears to be unbroken.

About 1,000 kilometres of bicycle routes wind their way through the city, making Berlin easy to explore by bike. This form of sightseeing is becoming increasingly attractive, as large distances are easy to cover in the comfort of the saddle. Few things are more fun than a quick ride through the Tiergarten, Berlin’s great central park, or to one of the many lakes within the city limits. And if it’s history you want, then a tour along the Berlin Wall Trail is the ride of choice.

Starting at Schlossplatz in the city centre, twelve cycling routes radiate out to the outer districts to provide an extensive network of bicycle lanes on the city’s side streets. You could ride from Rotes Rathaus via Alexanderplatz and Karl-Marx-Allee, with its interesting architecture, to Lichtenberg and Marzahn. Or follow the “students’ route” from the Free University in idyllic Dahlem to Kreuzberg. This colourful district around Bergmannstraße, Chamissoplatz and Südstern, with its many shops, pubs and cafés, is perfect for exploring by bike.

SKATING Roller skating, inline skating or skateboarding – rolling along on wheels has been a popular form of sportive locomotion for ages.

Leisurely tours along the water, more athletic runs, or doing tricks on the board, Berlin is waiting with experience and adventure. Skating, in its many forms, is fun for beginners and professionals alike. So slip into those skates and off we go!

Kronprinzessinnenweg, a 4-kilometre long asphalted trail through Grunewald forest alongside the AVUS highway, is especially popular.

In Schöneberg, there’s a wonderful 1.5-kilometre long route in Hans Baluschek Park between Südkreuz Station and Priesterweg Station. At Tempelhofer Feld, skaters can do their rounds on the former airport’s runways.

SLACKLINING Just tie a line between two trees and go. But what looks so easy is in fact an enormous physical and mental challenge. Still, the balancing act on the wobbly line is fun, fascinating – and potentially addictive. All you have to do is tension a length of flat webbing from tree to tree and the walk can begin. Slacklining has lots of practitioners in Berlin and the many city parks are perfect for an afternoon of fun and excitement.

BLACKMINTON Can’t sleep and looking for some fun at night? Not a problem in Berlin. Blackminton, moonlight bowling and black table tennis were invented for just such an emergency. These “dark” sports are done under blacklight and promise plenty of fun even after sunset. Covered in fluorescent body paint, the players chase after glow-in-the-dark balls (“night speeders”) to an exciting soundtrack of party music as they turn night into day. And it looks cool, too!

BOULDERING Berlin has got it all – except mountains. But you don’t need rocks to go climbing, as the large climbing scene in the city can attest to.

And with so many fans, there’s a correspondingly large offer of bouldering halls, outdoor climbing parks and similar facilities to choose from if you’re looking to experience that feeling of freedom.

FOREST PARCOURS Here’s a chance to discover Berlin from a whole new perspective at dizzying heights. If you’re looking to live out your Tarzan ambitions, you can do so at the high ropes course of Waldhochseilgarten Jungfernheide or Kletterwald Wuhlheide. Once you’ve put on your harness and received a brief instruction on the safety system, you’ve got a variety of challenging parcours to choose from. Hours of fun and excitement await for the whole family.

Productivity and goal-oriented work on important issues shouldn’t take place in your own office facilities. A change of scenery is always a good idea.

Getting some fresh air and taking the meeting – or at least a part of it – outdoors makes good sense and can help motivate the meeting participants.

Old school meeting rooms without daylight basically prevent any good results from the get-go.

Insider-Tipp: Lassen Sie die Stühle weg! Spontane Meetings in kleiner Runde können auch eine Stehparty sein. Diese dauert bekanntlich weniger lang und ist qualitativ oft besser als die ausgesessene Variante. Raffinierte Möbel erleichtern Meetings im Stehen, daher lohnt es sich, entsprechende Räumlichkeiten zu wählen.

Insider tip: forget about chairs! Spontaneous meetings with only few participants can also be held in buffet party style: standing up. Buffet parties are often shorter and better than the sitting variety – and the same goes for meetings. The right kind of furnishings make them comfortable, so it’s worth it to look for the proper facilities for this purpose.

GUSTAV KLIMT –––––––– Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) prägte die Malerei der Moderne und verhalf dem Jugendstil zu Weltruhm. Die Gemälde des Malergenies – allen voran “Der Kuss“, eines der bekanntesten Bilder der Welt – werden als Inbegriff für den Aufbruch in eine neue Zeit gesehen. In Wiener Museen und Kulturstätten sind zahlreiche Werke des Ausnahmekünstlers und seiner Zeitgenossen zu besichtigen.

–––––––– Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) had a major influence on modernist painting and helped Jugendstil, the Austrian Art Nouveau, to world renown. His paintings, in particular “The Kiss” – one of the world’s most famous pictures –, represent the spirit of a new era.

Auch die Gesellschaftsstruktur wandelte sich um die Jahrhundertwende dramatisch. An Gustav Klimts Frauenbildnissen lässt sich der Aufstieg eines selbstbewussten Bürgertums gut nachvollziehen. Mit seinem 1898 entstandenen Bild von Sonja Knips avancierte er zum Porträtisten des wohlhabenden Wiener Großbürgertums. Die Bilder von Fritza Riedler oder Adele Bloch-Bauer (die „Goldene Adele“ ist eines der teuersten Gemälde der Welt) sowie das seiner langjährigen Begleiterin Emilie Flöge, einer emanzipierten und modernen Frau, faszinieren bis heute. Die Salons jüdischer Großbürgerinnen waren Treffpunkte von Künstlern, Politikern und Wissenschaftlern. Die Frauen emanzipierten sich zusehends: Alma Mahler-Werfel, Rosa Mayreder, Grete Wiesenthal, Lina Loos, Gina Kaus und Berta Zuckerkandl – um nur einige der wichtigsten zu nennen.

um 1900 mit diesem Satz charakterisierte. Viele Meisterwerke der Malerei, der Architektur und des Designs, die heute in der ganzen Welt für Wien stehen, wurden in dieser Zeit geschaffen: etwa Gustav Klimts “Der Kuss“, Egon Schieles “Bildnis Wally Neuzil“, Otto Wagners Postsparkasse und Koloman Mosers Entwürfe für die Wiener Werkstätte. Vor allem diesen vier Protagonisten ist es zu verdanken, dass die Jahrhundertwende für Wien und Österreich so bedeutend wurde. Sie verbindet auch das gemeinsame Todesjahr 1918.

100 Jahre danach steht Wien ganz im Zeichen der Kunstepoche “Wiener Moderne“ und ihrer vier wichtigsten Vertreter.

Die Stadt zelebriert das Jubiläumsjahr mit zahlreichen Ausstellungen und Veranstaltungen. Damals wie heute ist die Donaumetropole Zentrum und Sammelplatz für Kunst und Kreativität. Zeugnisse für das Schaffen dieser Künstler und ihrer Zeitgenossen finden sich in Wien nicht nur in Museen und Sammlungen, sondern sie prägen bis heute das lebendige Stadtbild.

Schiele, the architect Otto Wagner and the universal artist Koloman Moser, all of them at the height of their artistic creation, left an indelible mark on the city. In Vienna’s coffeehouses, writers like Karl Kraus and Peter Altenberg debated with fellow intellectuals and artists. Architects such as Otto Wagner, Adolf Loos, Josef Hoffmann and Joseph Maria Olbrich experimented with new materials to create architectural concepts that were a striking departure from the historicist “Ringstraße style”. Gustav Klimt’s paintings reflected the artistic and scientific developments that shaped the period. Egon Schiele’s unflinching self-portraits, Otto Wagner’s ideas for a modern capital, Koloman Moser’s designs, Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis, Gustav Mahler’s modern symphonies and Arnold Schoenberg’s twelve-tone music are just some of the most important accomplishments of the age.

“It must have been very interesting in Vienna back then…” The Austrian writer Hermann Bahr was absolutely right when he used these words to describe turn-of-the-century Vienna. Many masterpieces of art, architecture and design associated with Vienna all over the world were created during this era, including Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss”, Egon Schiele’s “Portrait of Wally”, Otto Wagner’s Austrian Postal Savings Bank building and Koloman Moser’s designs for Wiener Werkstätte. These four protagonists played an especially defining role in making the fin de siècle period such an important time for art in Vienna and Austria.

They all passed away in 1918. A hundred years later, Vienna is taking an in-depth look at the creative output of these four important representatives of Viennese Modernism. The city is celebrating the anniversary year with countless exhibitions and events. Now, as then, Vienna is a vibrant hub for the arts and the creative sector.

Works by these artists and their contemporaries not only can be found in Vienna’s museums and exhibition halls; they have also shaped the look of the city itself.

Society also underwent dramatic change at the turn of the century. Gustav Klimt’s portraits of women give an indication of the emergence of an increasingly confident middle class. His 1898 portrait of Sonja Knips elevated him to the role of portraitist to a well-heeled Viennese bourgeoisie. His likenesses of Fritza Riedler and Adele Bloch-Bauer (the “Golden Adele” is one of the most expensive paintings in the world) or of his companion Emilie Flöge, an emancipated and modern woman, have lost nothing of their appeal.

Artists, politicians and scientists met in the salons of Vienna’s Jewish upper middle class. And women were taking on a new, more emancipated role. Important women of the time included Alma Mahler-Werfel, Rosa Mayreder, Grete Wiesenthal, Lina Loos, Gina Kaus and Berta Zuckerkandl.

er erste Stuhl war wohl ein Herrscherstuhl, erfunden von den Ägyptern schon 3.000 vor Christus. Auch später wurden Stühle nur von Fürsten, Königen und Kaisern für repräsentative Zwecke in Besitz genommen. Somit ist die Geschichte des Stuhls eine ersessene. Zunächst nur Adel und Klerus vorbehalten, war der Besitz eines Stuhls über Jahrhunderte eine Machtdemonstration gegenüber den Untertanen.

Das “normale“ Volk kam erst ab dem Mittelalter in den Genuss des Sitzens auf einfachen Holzkonstruktionen, bis im 18. Jahrhundert auch die Bürgerhäuser mit Stühlen ausgestattet wurden. Die Erfindung der Sprungfeder 1830 war eine Sensation in der Erzeugung von Sitzmöbeln, denn durch die Polsterung wurden sie gemütlicher und alltagstauglich. Die Thonet-Stühle, benannt nach ihrem Hersteller, wurden Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts durch ihre einzigartige Form der Massivholz-Biegung in aller Welt zum Statussymbol wohlhabender Designliebhaber. Sie waren auch die ersten Stühle, die in Serie hergestellt wurden.

Namhafte Designer und Architekten der Wiener Moderne wie Adolf Loos, Otto Wagner oder Josef Hoffmann sahen Möbel erstmals im engen Konnex zum Wohnbau. Sie wurden passend zur Architektur designt und schufen für den Betrachter eine unverwechselbare Einheit. Die enge Verbundenheit einzelner Möbelstücke mit dem architektonischen und natürlichen Umfeld zeigen auch die einzigartigen Designstühle in den ARCOTEL Hotels. Sie tragen die Geschichte des Hauses mit, sind ein Teil des Gesamteindrucks und ihre Bestimmung ist nur dieser eine Ort. Entworfen wurden sie von Professor Harald Schreiber, bildender Künstler, Industrie-Designer und Architekt, und zwar exklusiv für jedes einzelne ARCOTEL Hotel. Sie alle sind untrennbar mit dem jeweiligen Haus verbunden und erzählen ihre ganz persönliche Geschichte.

he first chair was probably a throne, invented by the Egyptians around 3,000 BC. Even much later, chairs were only employed by princes, kings and emperors for representative purposes. They were, quite literally, the seat of power. Initially reserved for nobility and the clergy, possession of a chair was for centuries a display of power over one’s subjects.

The common masses first began sitting on simple wood contraptions in the Middle Ages and it wasn’t until the 18th century that chairs made their appearance in the town houses of the bourgeoisie. The use of coil springs from around 1830 onwards was of enormous importance for the production of seating furniture, as the upholstery made chairs more comfortable and practical. Thonet chairs, named after their inventor, became a status symbol all over the world in the late 19th century thanks to the unique bentwood design. They were also the first chairs to be mass-produced.

Famous designers and architects of Viennese Modernism, including Adolf Loos, Otto Wagner and Josef Hoffmann, were the first to see furniture in connection with the buildings they inhabited. The objects were individually fashioned to match the architecture and create an unmistakable whole for the observer. The designer chairs at the ARCOTEL hotels also reveal this close link between furniture and the architectural and natural environment. They reveal the history of the property, form a part of the overall impression of the hotel, and are intended for just this one location – designed by Professor Harald Schreiber, artist, industrial designer and architect, exclusively for each individual ARCOTEL hotel. The pieces are all inseparably linked with the respective hotel and tell their own very personal story.

JOHN F STUHL Der feudale Schaukelstuhl mit dem Präsidentensiegel in jedem Zimmer des ARCOTEL John F Berlin erinnert an Kennedy und seine Vorliebe für Schaukelstühle, die er wegen seiner Rückenschmerzen bevorzugte. Den Mythos John F spürt man im gesamten InterieurDesign, vor allem in der Präsidentensuite und dem KennedyThemenzimmer.

KAISERWASSER STUHL Die prunkvolle und üppige Form in Kombination mit den Farben Silber und Hellrot interpretieren neu das kaiserliche Wien, die Umgebung mit dem Kaiserwasser und dem urtypischen Stadtviertel Kaisermühlen. Der Stuhl ist in drei Größen vorhanden, wobei sich die Perspektive des Sitzens jedes Mal verändert.

RUBIN STUHL Die Form der Armlehnen sind eine Anspielung an die Ruckdämpfer mächtiger Schiffe im Hafen von Hamburg. Weiß gekalktes Eichenholz erinnert an die Kalkfelsen im Norden von Deutschland und das Leder trägt die Leitfarbe des Hotels Rubinrot.

VELVET STUHL Das ARCOTEL Velvet ist jung und unkompliziert, dementsprechend frech präsentiert sich auch der Velvet Stuhl. Die Rückenlehne erinnert an eine rote Zunge, was an das ebenso freche Logo der Rolling Stones denken lässt. Doch der Stuhl selbst ist überraschend weich und bequem.

ONYX STUHL Die Form erinnert an einen Trichter, der den Benutzer regelrecht in sich aufnimmt und beinahe verschwinden lässt. Nicht zufällig ist das ARCOTEL Onyx Hamburg auf dem geschichtsträchtigen Platz “Beim Trichter“ an der Reeperbahn erbaut. Silberfarben lackiertes Holz, schwarzes Leder und Ornamente im Onyx-Stil spiegeln den Standort wider: Im Onyx-Stuhl kann man genauso abtauchen wie auf der berühmt-berüchtigten Reeperbahn.

CAMINO STUHL Strichcode oder Gartenzaun? Die unregelmäßigen Abnäher der Rückenlehne, wie auch beim Betthaupt, symbolisieren einen Balkencode in Anlehnung an die Wirtschafts- und Industriekraft Stuttgarts – oder auch die Latten eines Gartenzaunes als Hommage an das ehemalige Postdörfle, wo jetzt das ARCOTEL Camino Stuttgart steht. Die Farbe Beige wurde bewusst als Naturfarbe gewählt.

DONAUZENTRUM STUHL Die Donau dominiert das Design im ARCOTEL Donauzentrum mit ganz typischen Flusselementen. Der Stuhl interpretiert in diesem Zusammenhang aufeinandergesetzte Flusssteine. Das frische Grün steht für die saftige Natur des Naherholungsgebietes und die ruhige Farbe Grau für die Kieselsteine im Donaustrom.

JOHN F CHAIR The plush rocking chairs with the presidential seal in every room of ARCOTEL John F in Berlin are a tribute to John F. Kennedy and his fondness for rocking chairs, which he used to help relieve his severe back pain. The John F myth the entire interior design, especially in the presidential suite and the Kennedy theme room.

KAISERWASSER CHAIR The majestic and opulent design, in combination with the silver and bright red colours, represent the new imperial Vienna, the area around the Kaiserwasser and the prototypical district of Kaisermühlen. The chair comes in three sizes, changing the perspective of the sitting experience each time.

RUBIN CHAIR The shape of the armrests are an allusion to the fenders buffering the large ships in the port of Hamburg. The whitewashed oak wood is reminiscent of the limestone cliffs of northern Germany. The leather is dyed in the house colours: ruby red.

VELVET CHAIR ARCOTEL Velvet is young and easy-going, so the Velvet Chair was designed to be just as cheeky as its clientele. The backrest looks like a red tongue, a nod to the provocative logo of the Rolling Stones. The chair itself actually is surprisingly comfortable and soft.

ONYX CHAIR The funnel-shaped design literally swallows up its user. It’s no coincidence that ARCOTEL Onyx is situated on the historical square called Beim Trichter (Trichter = funnel). The silver-polished wood, black leather and Onyx-style ornamentation are all a reflection of the location: sitting in the Onyx Chair, you can lose yourself just as quickly as on the infamous Reeperbahn.

CAMINO CHAIR Barcode or garden fence? The irregular darts on the backrest of the chair, the same as on the headboard of the beds, symbolise a barcode – a reference to Stuttgart’s business and industry.

But they could also stand for the slats of a garden fence as an homage to the former village where ARCOTEL Camino Stuttgart now stands. The colour beige was deliberately chosen as a natural colour.

DONAUZENTRUM CHAIR The Danube dominates the design at ARCOTEL Donauzentrum with typical river elements.

The chair is an interpretation of river stones stacked one on top of the other. The fresh green colour stands for the lush nature along the Danube and the serene grey was chosen to represent the pebbles lying in the stream.

Zubereitung: Für das Gemüse Zucchini und Aubergine in Scheiben schneiden. Paprika halbieren, entkernen, vierteln, schälen. In einer Grillpfanne Olivenöl erhitzen, Kräuter und Knoblauch zugeben. Nacheinander das Gemüse garen, würzen und abkühlen lassen.

Für das Pesto Pinienkerne zusammen mit Parmesan im Mixer fein zerkleinern. Bei laufendem Mixer die Basilikumblätter zugeben, nach und nach das Öl einlaufen lassen und alles zu einem glatten, cremigen Püree mixen. In Gläser füllen und kühl lagern.

Für die Chips Zucchini und Aubergine auf der Aufschnittmaschine in hauchdünne Scheiben schneiden, mehlieren und in Öl knusprig ausbacken, auf Küchenkrepp abtropfen lassen und zum Schluss leicht salzen. Luftdicht verschlossen lagern.

Aus dem Antipasti-Gemüse und dem Büffelmozzarella auf dem Teller mittig Schicht für Schicht ein Türmchen bauen und jede Schicht mit etwas Pfeffer, Limonenöl, reifem Aceto Balsamico und Fleur de Sel würzen. Obenauf etwas Kräutersalat setzen. Rund um das Türmchen Kirschtomaten, Limonenöl, Balsamico und Basilikumspitzen arrangieren. Mit den knusprigen Gemüsechips und getoastetem Oliven-Ciabatta servieren.

Preparation: To prepare the vegetables, cut the zucchini and aubergine in slices, halve the peppers, scoop out the seeds, quarter and peel. Heat some olive oil in a grill pan and add the herbs and garlic. Cook the vegetables in succession, season and let cool.

For the pesto, combine the pine nuts and the parmesan in a blender and pulse until finely chopped. Add the basil leaves while blending, slowly pour in the oil, and process everything to make a smooth, creamy mixture. Fill into glasses and store in a cool place.

To make the chips, cut the zucchini and aubergine into wafer-thin slices in the slicing machine, turn the slices in some flour, and fry in fat until crisp. Allow excess oil to drip on a paper towel, then salt lightly. Store airtight.

Layer the antipasti vegetables with the buffalo mozzarella on the middle of the plate to form a little tower and spice each layer with some pepper, lime oil, aged balsamic vinegar and fleur de sel. Top the tower with a bit of herb salad.

Arrange cherry tomatoes, lime oil, balsamic vinegar and basil tips around the tower. Serve with the crispy vegetable chips and toasted olive ciabatta.

Ingredients: 120 g Rapunzel salad (corn salad) | 1 mango | 250 g (soy) yoghurt | 1 tbsp. agave syrup | 1 lemon | 3 tbsp. olive oil | salt, pepper | 250 g watermelon (peeled) | 1 avocado | ciabatta

Zubereitung: Rapunzel-Salat waschen und gut trocken schleudern. Zitrone waschen und abreiben. Mango schälen, entkernen und mit dem Mixer pürieren. Joghurt mit Abrieb und Saft der Zitrone, Agavensirup und 2 El Olivenöl glatt rühren. Großteil des Mangopürees unterheben.

Avocado schälen, entkernen und in die gewünschte Form schneiden. Wassermelone in Dreiecke schneiden und in einer Pfanne mit dem restlichen Olivenöl kurz anbraten. Rapunzel-Salat in einer Schale mit dem Mango-Joghurt-Topping marinieren und auf vier Tellern verteilen. Avocado auf dem restlichen Mangopüree anrichten, mit Salz und Pfeffer würzen. Mit Wassermelonenstücken und getoastetem Ciabatta servieren.

Preparation: Wash and spin-dry the Rapunzel salad greens. Wash and grate the lemon. Peel the mango, remove the seed and blend in the food processor. Add the lemon zest and juice, the agave syrup and 2 tbsp. of olive oil to the yoghurt and stir until smooth. Fold in most of the mango puree.

Peel the avocado, remove the seed and cut into the desired form. Cut the watermelon into triangles and sear in a pan with the remaining olive oil. Marinate the Rapunzel salad in a bowl with the mango-yoghurt topping and distribute onto four plates. Arrange the avocado on the remaining mango puree and add salt and pepper to taste. Serve with watermelon steaks and toasted ciabatta.

Zubereitung: Gurken schälen, der Länge nach halbieren und Kerngehäuse mit einem Löffel entfernen. Anderthalb Gurken, Olivenöl und die Knoblauchzehe im Mixer pürieren. Die halbe Gurke in feine Würfel schneiden und für die Einlage beiseitestellen. Buttermilch, Joghurt und Honig verrühren und mit der Gurkensuppe aufmixen.

Dill waschen, Stiele entfernen und fein schneiden. Suppe mit Dill, Meersalz, Cayennepfeffer und Zitronenschale abschmecken. Suppe in einer Schüssel oder Schale anrichten, Gurkenwürfel hineingeben und mit Olivenöl beträufeln. Für die marinierten Krabben Schalotten und Radieschen in feine Würfel schneiden und gut vermengen. Mit Olivenöl, Limettensaft, Meersalz und schwarzem Pfeffer abschmecken Baguette schräg in 2 cm dicke Scheiben schneiden. Butter in einer Pfanne zerlassen, angedrückten Knoblauch, Rosmarin und Thymian zugeben, das Baguette goldbraun anbraten und mit Meersalz bestreuen. Krabben auf dem Baguette verteilen und zur Gurkensuppe reichen.

Preparation: Peel the cucumbers, cut in half lengthwise and spoon out the seeds. Blend one-and-a-half cucumbers, olive oil and the garlic clove in a food processor.

Cut the remaining half cucumber into small cubes and lay aside as a soup topping. Mix together the buttermilk, yoghurt and honey and stir into the cucumber soup. Wash the dill, remove the stems and chop finely. Season the soup with the dill, sea salt, cayenne pepper and lemon rind. Serve in a bowl or cup, add cucumber cubes and sprinkle with olive oil.

For the shrimp cocktail, cut the shallot and radishes into small cubes and mix well. Season with olive oil, lime juice, sea salt and black pepper.

Cut the baguette diagonally into 2 cm thick slices. Melt some butter in a pan, add pressed garlic, rosemary and thyme, fry the baguette until golden brown and sprinkle with sea salt. Top the baguette slices with the shrimp and serve with the cucumber soup.

Zubereitung: Für die Füllung den Fond mit Rosinen und Gewürzen aufkochen. Couscous einrühren, alles von der Flamme nehmen und Couscous quellen lassen. Mit einer Gabel auflockern und mit 2 EL Olivenöl, den Cashewnüssen und Gewürzen vermischen. Nach Belieben mit Salz und Pfeffer abschmecken. Zucchini längs halbieren und das Fruchtfleisch mit einem Löffel herauslösen. Die Hälften reichlich mit Couscous füllen, mit veganem Käse bestreuen und auf dem Griller oder im Rohr ca. 10 Minuten garen.

Preparation: For the stuffing, add the raisins and spices to the vegetable broth and bring to the boil.

Stir in the couscous, remove from the heat and let the couscous steam. Fluff the couscous with a fork and mix in 2 tbsp. of olive oil as well as the cashews and the spices. Add salt and pepper to taste. Halve the zucchini lengthwise and spoon out the flesh. Fill the zucchini boats with couscous, sprinkle with vegan cheese and cook for about 10 minutes on the grill or in the oven.

Ingredients: 400 g tuna | 200 g white sesame seeds | 3 tbsp. soy sauce | 8 giant prawns | 1 cucumber | 50 ml rapeseed oil | 3 g wasabi paste | 50 g butter | 50 g flour | 1 lime | 1 g saffron | 100 ml white wine | 200 ml vegetable or fish broth | salt | pepper | sugar

Zubereitung: Für die Safransoße Butter in einem kleinen Topf zum Schmelzen bringen, Mehl dazugeben und mit dem Weißwein ablöschen. Anschließend mit dem Saft einer Limette und dem Gemüse- oder Fischfond auffüllen. 2 Minuten auf niedriger Hitze leicht köcheln lassen. Mit Salz und etwas Zucker abschmecken, kurz vor dem Servieren Safran dazugeben und kurz mit dem Pürierstab aufmixen.

Gurke waschen und schälen. Mit dem Sparschäler lange Streifen bis zum Kerngehäuse abheben. Die Gurken-Tagliatelle kurz in der Pfanne mit dem Rapsöl anbraten und Wasabipaste dazugeben.

Garnelen von der Schale befreien, Thunfisch in 4 gleich große Stücke schneiden, 10 Minuten in der Sojasoße marinieren und anschließend im Sesam wenden. Thunfisch und Garnelen bei mittlerer Hitze mit etwas Rapsöl auf beiden Seiten je 1 Minute braten und mit Salz und Pfeffer würzen.

Preparation: For the saffron sauce, melt the butter in a small saucepan, add the flour and deglaze with the white wine. Add the juice of one lime and the vegetable or fish broth and let simmer for 2 minutes on low heat. Add salt and some sugar to taste. Just before serving, add the saffron and briefly stir with a handheld blender.

Wash and peel the cucumber. With a low-waste peeler, cut out long strips down to the core. Heat the rapeseed in a pan, sear the cucumber tagliatelle and add the wasabi paste.

Clean the prawns from the shell, cut the tuna in 4 evenly sized pieces, marinate in the soy sauce for 10 minutes and turn in the sesame seeds. Fry the tuna and prawns at medium heat in some rapeseed oil for about 1 minute on each side and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Zubereitung: Steak auf beiden Seiten jeweils 2 Minuten scharf anbraten. Im auf 160 °C vorgeheizten Ofen 10 Minuten garen. Aus dem Ofen nehmen, in Alufolie wickeln und 5 Minuten rasten lassen. Vor dem Servieren mit Fichtennadelsalz und Pfeffer würzen.

Steinpilze in kleine Würfel schneiden und in etwas Butter scharf anbraten. Zum Abkühlen beiseitestellen.

Kräuter, Tomaten und Knoblauch fein hacken. Butter schaumig schlagen und die Kräuter-Knoblauch-Tomaten-Mischung einmengen. Masse mit den ausgekühlten Steinpilzen vermischen und mit Salz und Pfeffer abschmecken.

Kartoffeln, Waldpilze und Gemüse in Würfel schneiden, die Zwiebel klein schneiden und alles zusammen anrösten, bis es schön gebräunt ist. Nach Belieben mit Salz und Pfeffer würzen. Kurz vor dem Servieren mit viel frisch gehackter Petersilie verfeinern.

Preparation: Sear the steaks for about 2 minutes on each side then continue cooking in a preheated oven at 160°C for another 10 minutes. Remove from the oven, wrap in aluminium foil and let rest for 5 minutes. Just before serving, season with spruce tip salt and pepper.

Cut the porcini mushrooms into small cubes and sear in some butter. Set aside to cool. Finely chop the herbs, tomatoes and garlic. Whip the butter until frothy and stir in the herb-garlic-tomato mixture. Blend the mixture with the cooled porcini mushrooms and season to taste with salt and pepper.

Cut the potatoes, wild mushrooms and vegetables into cubes, finely chop the onions and brown everything together in a pan. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Sprinkle with lots of freshly chopped parsley just before serving.

Die Holunderblütensauce: 6 Eigelb | 150 ml Holunderblütensirup | 3-4 Pkg. Bourbon-Vanillezucker | 10 EL Orangensaft | 4 EL Zitronensaft

Elderflower sauce: 6 egg yolks | 150 ml elderflower syrup | 3–4 pkgs. Bourbon vanilla sugar | 10 tbsp. orange juice | 4 tbsp. lemon juice

Zubereitung: Für die Mousse Joghurt, Zucker, Zitronensaft und Zitronenzesten vermengen und glatt rühren. Gelatine in kaltem Wasser einweichen, ausdrücken und in etwas Grand Manier auflösen. Unter die Joghurtmasse rühren und Obers unterheben. In eine Dariol- oder Puddingform füllen und mindestens 4 Stunden kühl stellen. Für die Sauce Eigelb, Sirup, Vanillezucker, Orangensaft und Zitronensaft in einer Metallschüssel im Wasserbad mit dem Schneebesen zu einer cremigen Masse aufschlagen und warm halten. Formen in heißem Wasser etwas anwärmen und die Mousse auf Teller stürzen. Mit der Sauce und frischen Erdbeeren garnieren.

Preparation: For the mousse, mix together the yoghurt, sugar, lemon juice and zest and stir until smooth. Soak the gelatine in cold water, squeeze out and dissolve in some Grand Marnier. Stir into the yoghurt mixture and fold in some cream. Fill into a dariole or pudding mould and chill for at least 4 hours. To make the sauce, use a whisk to beat the egg yolks, syrup, vanilla sugar, orange juice and lemon juice in a metal bowl over a water bath until creamy. Keep warm. Heat the moulds slightly in some hot water and turn out the mousse onto plates.

Decorate with the sauce and fresh strawberries.

Tipp: Dazu passt sehr gut ein Sorbet aus Orangen oder Erdbeeren.

tuttgart ist die einzige deutsche Großstadt mit einer jahrhundertealten Weinbautradition, und auch die Topografie ist einmalig. Umschlossen von grünen Hügeln, liegt die Stadt wie in einem Kessel, wobei das Neckartal hervorragende Bedingungen für den Weinbau bietet. Schon im 3. Jahrhundert ließen römische Kaiser Weinberge anlegen und im 16. Jahrhundert war Stuttgart eine der größten Weinbaugemeinden im Heiligen Römischen Reich Deutscher Nation. Um die steilen Terrassen bewirtschaften zu können, wurden im 19. Jahrhundert Treppen und Wege angelegt. Mehr als 400 dieser “Stäffele“ sind erhalten geblieben. Wer sie alle erklimmen will, muss rund 20 Kilometer Stufen bewältigen.

Heute gibt es in der Region um Stuttgart 33 Weingärtnergenossenschaften und 609 Weingüter. In Württemberg werden mittlerweile mehrheitlich Rotweinsorten kultiviert, so etwa Dornfelder, Lemberger, Spätburgunder und vor allem Trollinger. Letzterer gehört zum Schwabenländle wie die Linsen zu den Spätzle. Die großen Trauben für den fruchtig-eleganten Rotwein reifen spät, er kann schon jung getrunken werden und darf durchaus etwas gekühlt serviert

werden. Bei den Weißweinsorten steht der Riesling bei den “Wengertern“ hoch im Kurs. Darüber hinaus gibt es Kerner, Silvaner und Müller-Thurgau, und auch der Sauvignon Blanc gewinnt zunehmend an Bedeutung und Beliebtheit. Wer etwas ganz Besonderes sucht, der wird hier ebenfalls fündig. Zum einen bei alten Sorten wie Muskattrollinger, Muskateller und Gewürztraminer, zum anderen bei modernen Rebsorten wie Acolon.

Die baden-württembergische Landeshauptstadt selbst verfügt über eine stadteigene Rebfläche von rund 17,5 Hektar, verteilt auf sechs verschiedene Lagen. Der bestens ausgeschilderte “Stuttgarter Weinwanderweg“ lädt ein, die herrlichen Hanglagen und viele idyllische Plätze zu erkunden.

Entlang verschiedener Strecken durch die Weinberge lernt man Aussichtspunkte und Sehenswürdigkeiten kennen. Für genussvolle Zwischenstopps ist auch gesorgt, denn die Weinregion Stuttgart ist auch für ihre Besenwirtschaften bekannt: temporäre Weinstuben, die nur zwölf Wochen im Jahr geöffnet haben. Als Zeichen dafür hängt ein Reisigbesen an der Tür. Ausgeschenkt wird nur der eigene Wein, und zwar meist in den gebietstypischen Henkelgläsern.

LEMBERGER Die Rebsorte Lemberger heißt in Österreich Blaufränkisch, wird hauptsächlich dort und in Deutschland angebaut, aber auch in Ungarn und Kroatien. Die Weinstilistik kann elegant-fruchtig, aber auch rassig-gehaltvoll sein. Aromen von Kirschen, Brombeeren und Blaubeeren bestimmen Geruch und Geschmack. Lemberger aus der Region Stuttgart haben in den letzten Jahren ein Topniveau erreicht.

Lemberger, also known as Blaufränkisch, is a variety of grape that is grown in Germany, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. The wines are light and fruity but can also become more full-bodied.

Cherry, blackberry and blueberry flavours can be detected in the nose and taste. Lemberger wines from the Stuttgart region have reached an amazing quality in recent years.

S

t uttgart is the only large German city with a long winegrowing tradition. And the topography is unique as well. Enclosed by green hills, the city lies in a fertile basin carved by the river Neckar with excellent conditions for growing wine. The history of winegrowing in Stuttgart goes back at least to the 3rd century, when the Roman emperors ordered vineyards to be planted in the region. In the 16th century, Stuttgart was one of the largest winegrowing communities in the Holy Roman Empire. In order to access the steep terraces, a system of steps and paths was built in the 19th century. More than 400 of these “Stäffele” are still in existence today. Climbing them all would require walking about 20 kilometres of steps.

Today there are 33 winegrowing cooperatives and 609 vineyards in the Stuttgart area. Most of the vines grown in the Württemberg wine region are red grape varieties like Dornfelder, Lemberger, Spätburgunder and, most commonly, Trollinger. Trollinger is as inextricably linked to the region as Porsche and Mercedes-Benz are to Stuttgart. The large, lateripening grapes are made into a fruity, light red wine that is often consumed very young and may be served slightly chilled.

When it comes to white wines, Riesling leads the field. Other

varieties include Kerner, Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau. In addition, Sauvignon blanc is gaining in popularity and importance among the local winegrowers. And if you’re looking for something truly special, a number of heritage varieties are grown here too, such as Muskattrollinger, Muskateller and Gewürztraminer, as well as modern varieties like Acolon.

The city of Stuttgart owns 17.5 hectares of municipal vineyards spread over six different locations. The well-signposted Stuttgart Wine Trail invites you to discover the wonderful slopes and many idyllic spots. Walking through the vineyards, you’ll discover scenic lookouts and lots of interesting attractions. And if you get hungry along the way, a typical feature of the wine region of Stuttgart are its Besenwirtschaften (“broom taverns”), temporary wine taverns that only open for twelve weeks of the year. The name comes from the broom that is hung at the door to show they are open for business.

Only the winegrower’s own wine may be sold, usually served in traditional fashion in handled glasses that are typical of the region.

In Kooperation mit dem Weingut wurde die Veranstaltungsreihe “Wine & Dine“ ins Leben gerufen, bei der jeweils ein Vier-Gänge-Menü serviert wird, die korrespondierenden Weine kommentiert der Winzer.

In the hotel restaurant WEISSENHOF, Högerle explains the concept of regionalism to the guests in a professional and above all “tasteful” manner. The newly selected wine list invites you to discover and experience the variety of local wines. A recommendation that embodies the selection is the Riesling 1* from Weinmanufaktur Untertürkheim, in which older vines and lower yields make for a wine with strength and character. The fresh, flowery and fruity notes can be experienced in the nose and the taste. The dominant flavours are melon and citrus fruits paired with a pleasant acidity. “My culinary recommendation to accompany this wine is tuna in a sesame crust and the surf & turf from our spring and summer menu.”

Also on the list are wines from Weingut Sonnenhof in Vaihingen-Gündelbach – one white, one rosé and one red – as the restaurant’s house wines. The winery combines traditional craftsmanship with modern ideas while practicing respect and sustainability for nature. In cooperation with Sonnenhof, the hotel created a Wine & Dine event series consisting of a four-course meal with the corresponding wines commented by the vintners themselves.

In Jamaica, they say that a bit of rum will make any day a positive one. And in Barbados, rum is considered the island’s national drink with centuries of tradition.

ei Rum gibt es keine Standards bzw. allgemeingültige Gesetze. Alkoholgehalte, Reifegrade der Lagerung, Namensgebung bzw. Definitionen der einzelnen Gruppen oder die Verwendung von Zucker-Couleur und Zucker zum Abrunden der Produkte sind daher sehr unterschiedlich. Rum in der Karibik reift aufgrund der klimatischen Verhältnisse zweibis dreimal so schnell wie Cognac und vier- bis fünfmal so schnell wie irischer Whisky, allerdings liegt der “Anteil der Engel“ – die Verdunstung im Fass – auch bei ca. 10 bis 12 % pro Jahr (normal sind ca. 4 % pro Jahr). Reifer Rum wird hauptsächlich verschnitten und setzt sich aus unterschiedlichen Jahrgängen zusammen, wobei immer der jüngste Jahrgang am Etikett angegeben wird (wie bei Cognac oder Armagnac). Reine Vintages bzw. Jahrgangs-Rums findet man am Markt sehr selten.

Rund um den Mythos Rum hat Herr Jork Meier, Chef der “crystal bar“ im ARCOTEL Rubin Hamburg, vieles zu erzählen. Seine Augen leuchten, wenn er die Gäste beraten und überraschen kann. Er ist fest der Überzeugung, dass Rum wieder im Trend liegt – auch zum Pur-Trinken. “Unsere Gäste kennen sich gut aus und wollen daher ständig Neues entdecken. Mich selbst fasziniert Rum auch. Man glaubt zu wissen, wie er schmeckt, und wird immer wieder mit neuen Finessen überrascht. Man muss einfach probieren.“ Aus seinem spannenden Rum-Sortiment empfiehlt er für den puren Genuss Barceló Imperial, Botucal Reserva Exclusiva und El Dorado 12.

Zeit ist beim Rum das Maß aller Dinge, sowohl in der Produktion als auch im Genuss. Mit zehn Jahren Lagerung im Eichenfass zählt ein guter Rum noch zu den jugendlichen Essenzen. Alter Rum ist die Königsklasse für Liebhaber des besonderen Geschmacks. 12, 15 oder mehr Jahre im Fass verstärken die Farbkomponenten, runden den Geschmack ab und machen den Rum unverwechselbar. Nicht umsonst zählt Rum heute unumstritten zu den spannendsten Themen in der Welt der Spirituosen.

here are no standards or universally valid rules for rum. Individual rums differ in alcohol content, length of aging, specific names and definitions, and whether or not caramel colouring and sugar are added. Due to the climatic conditions in the Caribbean, rum ages two to three times faster there than cognac and four to five times as fast as Irish whiskey, though the “angels’ share” – that’s the amount lost to evaporation in the barrel – amounts to about 10 to 12 % a year (compared to a normal rate of evaporation of maybe 4 % a year). Older rum is typically “cut” and consists of several different ages of rum blended together. The label then indicates the youngest age (as is done with cognac or armagnac). Pure vintages are rare.

Someone who loves talking about rum and the legends that surround it is Jork Meier, bar chef at the crystal bar of ARCOTEL Rubin Hamburg. His eyes literally light up when he has the chance to offer his advice and dazzle his patrons. He is convinced that rum is back in style – even straight. “Our patrons know their stuff and are always looking for a new experience. I’m also fascinated by rum. You think you know what it tastes like and then you’re constantly surprised by new nuances. You’ve just got to try them all.” From his exciting assortment of rums, he recommends Barceló Imperial, Botucal Reserva Exclusiva and El Dorado 12 for a straight-up taste sensation.

When it comes to rum, time is of the essence. This is true as much in the production as it is when drinking it. After ten years in an oak barrel, a good rum is still one of the youthful ones. Old rum is the premier class for connoisseurs. Barrelaging for 12, 15 or more years lends the rum a more intense colour, rounds out the taste and creates a highly distinctive personality. With good reason, rum is one of the most exciting topics in the world of spirits today.

Ja, absolut. Seit meiner Jugend hat sich Linz unglaublich stark verändert und hat mittlerweile als Kultur- und Tourismusstadt sehr viel zu bieten. Allein ein Blick aus dem Fenster eines unserer Zimmer zeigt die Vielfalt von Linz – einerseits Industriestadt, andererseits Kreativstadt mit der Tabakfabrik, dem Ars Electronica Center und der Kunstuniversität.

Viele Gäste wissen gar nicht, was Linz alles zu bieten hat, und sind absolut begeistert, nachdem sie einmal hier waren.

As a native of Linz, of course I have a strong emotional connection to this city and to ARCOTEL Nike. The hotel has one of the longest traditions here and has always been an institution. Together with my team, I want to achieve that every guest and every local has positive memories of ARCOTEL Nike.

And what is your motto for stressful and difficult situations?

That immediately makes me think of that song by Xavier Naidoo: “What we can’t accomplish alone we can achieve when we’re together.” I know that I can depend on my team and that we can master any situation together. That lets me approach any challenge with motivation and a positive attitude.

“Us” instead of “me”…

For me, teamwork and cooperation are extremely important. If everyone pulls together, there’s almost nothing we cannot do.

“Say Linz, say change.” That’s the city’s slogan, isn’t it?

That’s right. Linz has undergone enormous change since I was young. Today it is a city of culture and tourism with plenty to offer in this regard. All you have to do is take a look out of one of our windows. You’ll see the industrial city, on the one hand, but also the creative city with Ars Electronica Center and the Art University. Many of our guests don’t even know all of what Linz has to offer and they are absolutely amazed by the city when they leave.

v El Camino bedeutet Der Weg. Wie war dein Weg in das ARCOTEL Camino in Stuttgart?

Ich habe einen langen Weg hinter mir. Ich komme ursprünglich aus Ägypten, hatte aber den Traum, woandershin zu gehen und etwas zu erleben. Also bin ich noch sehr jung in die Türkei gereist, von da aus mit einem Schlepperboot nach Griechenland, weiter zu Fuß bis nach Ungarn. Von dort bin ich mit einem Van und anderen Flüchtlingen im April 2015 nach München gefahren. Schließlich brachte mich der Zug nach Stuttgart und dort bin ich dann geblieben. Durch meinen Vormund erhielt ich einen Praktikumsplatz im ARCOTEL Camino und wurde in eine Ausbildung übernommen.

Spontan: Ein Erlebnis im Job? Ich denke gern an meine allererste Hochzeit hier im ARCOTEL Camino, bei der ich gearbeitet habe. Obwohl es ein langer Abend war, hat es mir super gefallen.

Wo ist dein Lieblingsplatz im Hotel?

Ich bin am liebsten abends im Restaurant WEISSENHOF oder an der BAR SCALA. Die Stimmung ist da total schön, die Gäste entspannen sich und haben eine gute Zeit.

Arbeiten! (wie aus der Pistole geschossen, lacht) Basketball ist für mich …

Ich spiele im Basketballverein in Ludwigsburg. Basketball heißt für mich, nie aufzugeben, immer wieder versuchen, den Korb zu treffen. Das mag ich, denn ich gebe auch in anderen Situationen niemals auf.

Dein nächstes großes Ziel?

Mein nächstes großes Ziel ist es, meine Ausbildung zu schaffen. Das ist für mich wirklich sehr wichtig.

Dein größter Wunsch?

Ich möchte einmal mein eigener Chef sein, am liebsten mit einem eigenen Hotel oder Restaurant. Selbst etwas zu schaffen und auf die Beine zu stellen, wollte ich schon immer.

Ist Stuttgart eine coole Stadt? Was gefällt dir an Stuttgart?

Stuttgart lebt. Es ist eine sehr aktive Stadt, die Menschen arbeiten viel und hart und wollen etwas erreichen. So wie ich.

El Camino means the way. Tell us about your way before coming to ARCOTEL Camino in Stuttgart.

I’ve come a long way. Originally, I’m from Egypt, but I dreamed of going somewhere else and experiencing something new. So when I was still very young, I went to Turkey, took a boat to Greece and continued on foot to Hungary. From there, in April 2015, I drove by van with some other refugees to Munich. A train finally brought me to Stuttgart. My guardian helped get me a trainee position at ARCOTEL Camino and here I am.

Off the top of your head, what is one memorable experience from the job?

I remember fondly the very first wedding I worked at.

Although it was a long evening, I enjoyed it very much. I told

the guests about how I was a newcomer on the job, in training, and I received a lot of praise for my work. That was very nice.

What is your favourite place in the hotel?

I really enjoy spending the evenings at WEISSENHOF restaurant or BAR SCALA. The atmosphere is really great, the guests are relaxed and having a good time.

Work or school? What’s more fun?

Work! [laughs, the answer comes without hesitation] Basketball is very important for you…

I play in the basketball club in Ludwigsburg. Basketball for me means never giving up, always trying to shoot the basket.

I like that because I never give up in any situation.

What is your favourite flavour of ice cream in the summer?

I don’t even like ice cream! [laughs] In the summer, I like drinking a cool, refreshing beer with my friends.

Your next big goal in life?

My next goal is to finish my training. That is really very important for me.

Your biggest wish?

I would like to be my own boss someday, perhaps with my own hotel or restaurant. I’ve always wanted to do something myself and get something off the ground. I really enjoy the restaurant business and have already been able to gain some experience abroad, so that is my greatest wish.

Is Stuttgart a cool city? What do you like about Stuttgart?

Stuttgart is a lively city, a very active city where the people work hard and want to achieve something. Just like me. I like that a lot.

hne sie läuft einfach gar nichts. Sie sind diejenigen, die täglich dafür sorgen, dass ihre Hotels so funktionieren, wie es der Gast erwartet. Eine Selbstverständlichkeit, die jedoch viel Kompetenz und Feingefühl erfordert.

Die Rede ist von den Technikern der ARCOTEL Hotels. Sie tüfteln, reparieren, entwickeln, schrauben, koordinieren und optimieren. Flink und diskret, fast unsichtbar – die Backstage-Netzwerker der Hotelgruppe haben das Daily-Business fest im Griff.

Szenenwechsel: Ein sonniger Freitag im Januar, später Nachmittag. Im ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser Wien arbeitet ein hoch motiviertes Techniker-Team gemeinsam mit Dr. Renate Wimmer – Haustechnik ist übrigens ihre Leidenschaft – am dritten Tag des Jahresmeetings an vielen Themen, um die ARCOTEL Hotels auch 2018 technisch weiterzuentwickeln, effizienter zu führen und dabei stets den Umweltgedanken zu verfolgen.

Ingo Jahn ist seit mehr als zehn Jahren als Techniker bei den ARCOTEL Hotels tätig. Als Head Chief Engineer kennt er jedes Haus wie seine Westentasche. Er hat schon viele spannende Bauphasen bis zur Fertigstellung neuer ARCOTEL Hotels miterlebt. Sein Team verteilt sich auf zehn Hotels in Österreich und Deutschland. Distanzen sind kein Thema. Es gibt ja WhatsApp, Smartphone und Tablet, das verbindet sekundenschnell. Jeder hilft dem anderen.

Auch wenn jedes Haus ein Unikat ist, sind die täglichen Herausforderungen der Kollegen doch sehr ähnlich. “Hast du …? Kennst du …? Was meint Ihr dazu?“ Synergien in den Häusern werden genützt und somit Lösungen rasch gefunden.

They fix what’s broken, tighten loose screws, come up with new solutions, coordinate complex works and optimise outdated processes.

They are nimble and discreet, almost invisible. But the hotel group’s backstage networkers have got the daily business under control.

Cut to a sunny Friday in January. It’s late in the afternoon. The third day of the annual meeting at ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser in Vienna. A motivated team of technicians is working with Dr. Renate Wimmer – building services are a hobby of hers – discussing ways to help keep the ARCOTEL Hotels up to date technically in 2018, to manage the properties more efficiently and to always follow the principles of environmental thinking.

Ingo Jahn has been a technician for ARCOTEL Hotels for more than ten years. As Head Chief Engineer, he knows every hotel like the back of his hand. He has been involved in many exciting construction phases up to the completion of new ARCOTEL hotels. His team is at work at ten hotels in Austria and Germany. Distances aren’t an issue. Thanks to WhatsApp, smartphones and tablets, communication is fast and in real time. Everyone helps everyone else. Each property may be unique, but the challenges the workers face are the same. “Have you got…? Do you know…? What do you think?”

Synergies at the different hotels are used to rapidly find solutions to a problem.
