ummer is here and everything is blooming and growing. And we’re delighted to report that the ARCOTEL family is growing, too. In August 2017, we’ll be opening another unique hotel: the brand-new ARCOTEL Donauzentrum Vienna, a 4-star hotel that knows what today’s guests want. A comfy atmosphere, cool guest and meeting rooms, a chill-out area, co-working space and more are waiting. Shopaholics will be in especially good hands with us: the hotel is located in Donau Zentrum, Vienna’s largest shopping and entertainment centre. Here you’ll feel the heartbeat of the city as you dive into Vienna’s summer nights with top bars and hot rhythms. Read more about it in our cover story.

Our motto this summer: Take your family to Europe’s most beautiful cities. Berlin, Hamburg, Linz, Salzburg, Stuttgart, Vienna, Zagreb – they all have so much to offer visitors big and small.

As part of our hotel package, kids up to the age of 12 will stay for free in the family room. Summer is the perfect time for a change of scenery with the family. Sustainability is very important to us. With a feeling for society and the environment, hotels and their guests can also make a contribution. The ARCOTEL initiative Give Bees A Chance is helping to save the honeybee and was able to collect donations of EUR 100,000 last year for bee charities in Austria, Germany and Croatia. The campaign will continue this year! In “small steps for big changes”, we are introducing efficiency and environmental awareness into our daily work. Most recently, ARCOTEL Nike Linz and ARCOTEL Donauzentrum have opted for bedding and towels from fair production and with environmental and social responsibility. Read more on page 68.

3:21 p.m.

Hier bin ich richtig. Im brandneuen ARCOTEL Donauzentrum angekommen, heißt es einfach: Einchecken und wohlfühlen.

Der Empfang an der Rezeption ist ein herzliches Willkommen, den Check-in erledige ich selbst am Terminal, superschnell ist die Keycard für mein Zimmer bereit. Vorher genehmige ich mir noch einen Drink auf der Terrasse. Ich bin in Wien angekommen. Wie mitten im Leben. Vienna is waiting for me!

This definitely is the right place. At the brand-new ARCOTEL Donauzentrum, all you have to do is check in and feel at home.

After a warm welcome at the reception, I check myself in at the self-service terminal and my key card is ready in no time. But first: a drink on the terrace. I’m in Vienna. This is what life is all about. Vienna is waiting for me!

Der Slogan der Hotel-Website “für Business Rockstars & Shopping Queens“ lässt mein Herz höherschlagen. Na dann, auf zu einem Sidestep in das Einkaufszentrum, wenn ich schon mittendrin wohne. Fazit: Es hat sich gelohnt. Die riesige Auswahl lässt mich fast die Zeit vergessen. Am Ende finde ich das perfekte Kleid für meine Summernight in Wien.

5:05 p.m.

The hotel website promises a hotel “for business rockstars & shopping queens”. That sounds like just the thing for me! Time for a little shopping spree – I practically live inside a shopping centre here! And it’s absolutely worth a look. The enormous selection almost made me lose track of time. But at last I found the perfect dress for my summer night in Vienna.

Stylish eingekleidet, treffe ich mich mit meiner Freundin zum Abendessen im Donau Plex, dem Entertainmentcenter des Donau Zentrums. Wir haben uns für den SALOON entschieden, Amerika lässt grüßen! Die Atmosphäre ist absolut chillig, Tex-Mex, Burger, Ribs & Wings geschmacklich sensationell. Morgen abend wollen wir im Akakiko japanisch essen und danach in eines der Kinos im Cineplexx.

7:33 p.m.

Stylishly made up in my new dress, I meet a friend for dinner at Donau Plex, the entertainment centre at Donau Zentrum. We opt for American-style dining at SALOON: an absolutely laidback atmosphere with a fantastic choice of Tex-Mex, burgers, ribs and wings. Tomorrow we want to try the Japanese food at Akakiko before going to see a film at Cineplexx.

9:38 p.m.

Die Lage des Hotels ist einfach ideal! Nach dem Essen sind wir mit der U1 in fünf Minuten auf der Donauinsel – der wunderbare Tipp kam von einem Arbeitskollegen aus Wien. Am Ufer des Entlastungsarmes der Donau ist Karibik-Feeling angesagt. Auf der Copa Cagrana (von Kagran = Stadtteil des 22. Bezirks) reihen sich Cocktailbars und gemütliche Restaurants direkt am Wasser.

Ein absolutes Highlight im Sommer, dazu passend genießen wir den fruchtigen Cóctel Tropical “Summertime“ im Rumba y Mambo.

Stimmung und Musik rundherum sind Urlaub pur! I LIKE!

You just can’t beat this location! After dinner, we hop on the U1 and in just five minutes we’re on Danube Island – a fantastic tip from a Viennese colleague. Caribbean flair awaits on the shores

of the New Danube. Copa Cagrana (the name comes from Vienna’s 22nd district, Kagran) is full of cocktail bars and cosy restaurants right on the water. An absolute highlight in the summer! To celebrate the season, we go for the fruity cóctel tropical “Summertime” at Rumba y Mambo. The music and the atmosphere put us in a holiday mood! I LIKE!

10:43 p.m.

Wir ziehen weiter! In wenigen Minuten sind wir mit der U1 im Herzen der Stadt, am Stephansplatz. Zwischendurch ein Kaffee bringt neue Energie für den Rest der Nacht. Die Tag-undNacht-Location “Graben 30“ fesselt mich. Schick und trendy, einfach ein perfekter Stop-over.

We’re moving on! Just a few minutes later, the U1 drops us in the heart of the city at Stephansplatz. A quick coffee gives us a boost of energy for the rest of the night. I’m drawn to the dayand-night location Graben 30. Hip and trendy and perfect for a stopover.

Still motivated! Wir schlendern am Stephansdom vorbei, die Rotenturmstraße hinunter, wieder Richtung Wasser. Am Ufer des Donaukanals reihen sich lässige Locations. Wir haben uns für die Bar im “Motto am Fluss“ entschieden – eine der attraktivsten Open-Air-Stationen der Stadt.

12:11 a.m.

Still motivated! We stroll past St. Stephen’s Cathedral, down Rotenturmstraße back toward the water. A whole row of cool clubs can be found along the Danube Canal. We settle in at the bar Motto am Fluss – one of the most attractive outdoor locations in the city.

1:26 a.m.

Wo ist die nächste Tanzfläche? Ein paar Schritte weiter liegt einer der bekanntesten Clubs, das “FLEX“. Gute Partystimmung bis 6.00 Uhr in der Früh! Und jetzt abtanzen!

Which way to the next dance floor? Just a short distance away is one of the city’s best-known clubs, FLEX. The party keeps going here until 6.00 in the morning! Time to dance the night away!

3:32 a.m. Nacht fährt, geht sich noch ein Abstecher ins BermudaDreieck aus, die Party-Meile Wiens. Good vibes!

The U-Bahn runs all night on the weekend, so we head back into town to the BermudaDreieck (Bermuda Triangle), Vienna’s party mile. Good vibes!

Wer hat an der Uhr gedreht? Ich bin

STUTTGART Manchmal sind es die kleinen Reisen, die glücklich machen.

W

ie wäre es zur Abwechslung mit einigen Tagen in Stuttgart. Eine deutsche Großstadt wie jede andere? Nein, Stuttgart hat das gewisse Etwas. Und damit meinen wir nicht nur das rege Kulturleben, die trendigen Shoppingadressen, die bunte Kreativszene oder die berühmte Autoerzeugung. Eigentlich ist es viel mehr das besondere Lebensgefühl zwischen dem roten Dächermeer und den grünen Hügeln, das sich in den multikulturellen Stadtvierteln und den unzähligen Lokalen widerspiegelt. Stuttgart ist ideal für ein Familienwochenende. Die gemütliche Atmosphäre sowie die reizvolle Umgebung bieten eine Vielfalt von Erlebnissen für Groß und Klein. So vergeht in der Stadt selbst und bei Ausflügen ins Umland die Zeit wie im Flug.

Grüne Inseln in der Stadt. Mit dem wunderschön gelegenen Höhenfreibad, einem riesigen Spielplatz, der Tierwiese mit Ponys, Schafen, Ziegen, Alpakas und Co., einem Karussell auf dem historischen Jahrmarkt, dem „Theater in der Badewanne“ und einer dampfenden Kleinbahn! Ein Tipp für einen Ausflug sind der Erlebnispark und das Wildparadies Tripsdrill. Die Investition von knapp 50 Autominuten zahlt sich aus, denn dort warten über 100 originelle Attraktionen für Mutige (Stichwort Achterbahn!), Wasserratten und Wissbegierige.

Zum Schluss etwas Süßes Ritter Sport kennt jeder. Nur wenige Autominuten von Stuttgart und dem ARCOTEL Camino entfernt, findet die ganze Familie ein süßes Paradies. Green islands in the city Wilhelma is Germany’s only combined zoo and botanical garden and one of the most diverse zoos in the world, with 11,000 animals from 1,200 different species, plus 7,000 plant species in the historic park and in the greenhouses. Haus des Waldes in Degerloch also serves up a good helping of nature with a great variety of activities and events. This “House of the Woods” uses fun and games to teach kids about nature and sustainability. After all, children love the woods and the kinds of adventures you can have there – from climbing trees to grilling bread on a stick.

A special kind of driving enjoyment Affectionately called “Zacke” (spike) by the locals, the Stuttgart Rack Railway connects Marienplatz Square with Degerloch. Hikes with gorgeous views include Blaustrümpflerweg (2.5 hours) or the circular trail Waldebene Ost (5 km).

Killesberg Park is another great destination. The urban public park has an openair swimming pool, a gigantic playground, an animal enclosure with ponies, sheep, goats, alpaca and more, a carousel at the historic funfair, a “Theatre in the Bathtub” and a miniature steam railway. A good tip for an exciting outing is the Tripsdrill theme and wildlife park. The 50 minute drive is worth it. You’ll be rewarded with more than 100 original rides for daredevils (think rollercoaster!), water lovers and enquiring minds.

Lieblingsschokolade selbst gemacht – in Waldenbuch werden Kinderträume wahr. In der SchokoWerkstatt können sich Kinder und Jugendliche als Schokomeister versuchen. Zuvor erfahren sie unter pädagogischer Anleitung in einem Workshop alles über den Weg von der Kakaobohne zur Schokolade. Shoppen kann glücklich machen – zumindest wenn es um Schokolade geht. Im SchokoShop gibt es neben den Ritter Sport-Klassikern immer wieder innovative neue Sorten zu entdecken. Das Quadrat steht auch im Mittelpunkt von Marli Hoppe-Ritters spannender Sammlung zeitgenössischer geometrisch-abstrakter Kunst, die seit 2005 in wechselnden Ausstellungen im benachbarten Museum Ritter präsentiert wird. Für die Stärkung zwischendurch sorgt das Museums-Café mit kleinen Gerichten und leckeren Schokolade-Spezialitäten. Kunstgenuss wörtlich genommen.

erzeit läuft THE ONE Grand Show – eine spektakuläre, extravagante Revue, die Groß und Klein begeistert. Mit farbenprächtigen Collagen großer Showbilder, die sich durch Musik, Tanz und Kostüme zu einem kunstvoll in Szene gesetzten Ganzen formieren. Auch die Bühnentechnik bringt die Besucher immer wieder zum Staunen. Die ausgeklügelte Konstruktion des Bühnenbodens schafft verblüffende Illusionen des Verschwimmens oder des Boden-unter-den-Füßen-Verlierens.

Bereits die Vorgängershow “THE WYLD“ war ein großer Erfolg, doch mit der aktuellen Produktion landete Intendant und Produzent Dr. Berndt Schmidt einen sensationellen Coup – mit einem Superstar der Modeszene. Kein Geringerer als Jean Paul Gaultier entwarf die 500 glamourösen Kostüme für über 100 Künstler aus 26 Nationen. Sein unverwechselbarer Stil machte ihn schon früh zum “Enfant terrible“ der Mode. Markenzeichen wie das gestreifte Marine-Shirt mischten die Haute Couture auf, Schrilles wie Madonnas legendäre Kegel-BHs machten (Bühnen-) Geschichte. Gaultiers Leidenschaft für große Show lebte er auch in den genial-gewagten Entwürfen für die gewaltige Produktion im Palast aus.

Und darum geht’s – kurz und bündig: Im Stück wird ein verlassenes Revuetheater durch eine Undergroundparty aus dem Tiefschlaf gerissen. Ein Gast verliert sich in der magischen Aura des Ortes. Vor seinem inneren Auge erweckt die damalige Theaterdirektorin die alten Zeiten. Vergangenheit und Gegenwart verschwimmen in einem Wachtraum. Immer stärker spürt der junge Mann dabei die Sehnsucht nach dem einen Menschen, der alles bedeutet: THE ONE. Während sich um ihn herum alles auflöst, fliegt, dreht – sogar der Boden unter seinen Füßen treibt auseinander –, erkennt er, welchen Halt er in seinem Leben sucht.

A colourful collage of large show pictures that combine with music, dance and costumes to create a masterful performance of art. The stagecraft leaves audiences thrilled every time. The clever construction of the stage floor creates the astonishing illusion of borders blurring or of losing one’s footing.

The previous show, THE WYLD, also was an enormous success. But with the current production, artistic director and producer Dr. Berndt Schmidt landed a sensational coup – with a superstar from the fashion scene. None other than Jean Paul Gaultier designed the 500 glamorous costumes for the over 100 performers from 26 countries.

His distinctive style made him an enfant terrible of the fashion world. His trademark designs like the striped navy shirt stirred up the haute couture, outlandish creations like Madonna’s legendary conical bra wrote (stage) history. Now Gaultier has put his passion for showmanship into the brilliant and daring designs for this tremendous Friedrichstadt-Palast production.

And here’s the story – in a nutshell. An underground party awakens an abandoned revue theatre from its deep sleep. A guest loses himself in the magical aura of the place. Before his inner eye, the former theatre director brings the old times to life. Past and present are blurred in his waking dream. The young man increasingly senses a longing for that one person who means everything: THE ONE. While everything around him dissolves, spins, turns – even the ground underneath his feet begins to crumble –, he recognises the hold he has been looking for in his life.

n der Stadt Das Faszinierende an Zagreb ist, dass man alles gut zu Fuß erkunden kann. Die kroatische Hauptstadt ist überschaubar und deshalb ideal mit Kindern. Man schlendert durch die Stadt, besucht den Markt Dolac, dessen überwältigendes Angebot an frischen Produkten gerade im Sommer dazu einlädt, regionale Köstlichkeiten einzukaufen. Vom Hauptplatz aus erreicht man gemütlich die engen Gassen der Oberstadt, wo sich zahlreiche kleine Geschäfte, gemütliche Cafés und Bars aneinanderreihen.

Oberstadt und Unterstadt verbindet die älteste Standseilbahn Kroatiens, die zugleich eine der kürzesten der Welt ist – ein ungewöhnliches Erlebnis.

Im Park Zagreb ist auch eine sehr grüne Stadt, denn weitläufige Parkanlagen bringen viel Natur ins Stadtleben. In den Sommermonaten sind sie stets gut besucht, denn wer Zeit hat, liebt es, den Tag unter freiem Himmel zu verbringen. Vom ARCOTEL Allegra Zagreb – mit seinen Appartements und Suiten der ideale Stützpunkt für einen Familienaufenthalt – ist es nicht weit bis zum Park Zrinjevac, der mit gepflegten Grünanlagen und Schatten spendenden Bäumen zu einem Picknick einlädt. Mit knusprigem Brot, dem traditionellen Rohschinken Pršut, frischem Obst und Gemüse vom Markt, dazu einen Rotwein aus der Region für die Großen und für die Kinder frisch gepresste Säfte, herrlich! Und am Nachmittag geht es in den Zoo Zagreb. Auch dieser ist überschaubar und deshalb sehr gut geeignet für eine Exkursion mit Kindern. Angelegt ist der Tiergarten im schönsten Teil des Maksimir-Parks, des größten Parks in Südeuropa und einer der ältesten Anlagen in Europa. Zurück im Stadtzentrum, sollte man eine erfrischende Pause bei einem Eisbecher auf der Zagreber Flaniermeile Ilica genießen. Für die Großen gibt es natürlich röstfrischen Kaffee in einem der gemütlichen Lokale.

Am See Zagreb liegt zwar nicht am Meer – bis zur Adria sind es noch 170 Kilometer –, doch der Jarun-See im Südwesten der Stadt ist ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel mit viel Wasser: zwei Badeseen und einer zwei Kilometer langen Regattastrecke. Hier ist nicht nur im Sommer immer etwas los, denn das riesige Areal bietet viele Möglichkeiten für Erholung und Freizeit, Sport und Spaß. Für Wassersportler ebenso wie für Radfahrer und Jogger. Einige Diskos am See sind ein beliebter Treffpunkt, besonders am Wochenende.

Und auch Restaurants und Cafés gehören zur charakteristischen Atmosphäre.

Auf dem Berg An einem strahlenden Sommertag ruft der Berg! Der Naturpark Medvednica ist vom Stadtzentrum gut zu erreichen und daher ein beliebtes Naherholungsziel. Hier lässt sich die Natur mit einem großartigen Blick über Zagreb aktiv erleben. Ausgedehnte Wanderrouten verschiedener Ansprüche sind auch für Familien ideal, Berghütten laden zu einer Rast ein, zu entdecken gibt es auch eine Höhle und eine mittelalterliche Burg.

Zu sehen und zu erleben gibt es in der kroatischen Hauptstadt mehr als genug. Nach einem Stop-over gelingt es leichter, den Urlaub beginnen zu lassen: durchatmen, einen Gang zurückzuschalten und einfach genießen.

n the city The great thing about Zagreb is that you can cover practically everything on foot. The city is surprisingly small, which makes it ideal for exploring with children. Start with a leisurely stroll through the city towards Dolac Market, where the overwhelming selection of fresh products is sure to have one or the other regional delicacy waiting for you. From the main square, it’s not far to the narrow streets of the Upper Town lined with an assortment of little shops, cosy cafés and bars. Croatia’s oldest funicular, and the world’s shortest, connects the Upper and Lower Town. Hop on!

A ride will be an experience to remember.

In the park Zagreb is a very green city with large gardens and parks that bring the nature into city life. Expect to find large crowds here during the summer months, as anyone who has some free time will want to spend the day out in the open air. At the lake Zagreb isn’t by the sea – it’s another 170 km to the coast – but Jarun Lake in the southwest of the city is a popular aquatic destination with two bathing lakes and a two kilometre long regatta run. There’s always something going on here – and not just in the summer. You’ll find many options here for rest, recreation, sports and fun. Whether you’re a water sports enthusiast, a cyclist or a jogger. Several discos are located by the lake – popular hangouts, especially on weekends. Restaurants and cafés also belong to the characteristic atmosphere.

On the mountain On sunny summer days, it’s difficult to ignore the call of the mountain. Medvednica Nature Park, a popular recreational destination, is easy to reach from the city centre. Here you can enjoy nature with fantastic views of the city. The selection of long or short walks of all levels of difficulty also includes several family-friendly alternatives. If you’ve had enough of hiking, you could stop for a rest at a mountain inn – or explore a cave and a medieval castle.

Last but not least There are several “plan B” options for rainy days. You could visit the Technical Museum and learn more about the development of power generation, from the watermill to the combustion engine. The museum also features a true-to-original copy of Nikola Tesla’s workroom, a “real” mine, a planetarium and a see-through beehive. A guided tour will give you some interesting details about the exhibits. If it’s action and speed you’re looking for, then you should spin a few laps at INDOOR Karting Arena Zagreb, try out the sensation of weightlessness with skydiving or feel the rush of adrenaline at a paintball session.

In the Croatian capital, there’s more than enough to see and do. And after a stopover, it’ll be that much easier to really start your holiday: breathe deeply, switch back a gear and just enjoy.

n Linz beginnt’s! For fun and excitement on the water, hop aboard MS Linzerin and take a cruise through the harbour. Segway tours through the city centre or a trip to voestalpine Stahlwelt to discover the world of steel are some good options for bigger kids. On the way there, be sure to put in a stop at the Haribo Shop. Here you’ll find everything from classic gummy bears to new varieties, as well as fan items and fantastic specials for the sweet tooth.

But what would summer be without the beach? In Linz’s Urfahr district, you’ll find a natural beach where you can spend the day by the water. Every year, Alturfahr hosts the Danube beach event “Ufern” which offers a sizzling hot beach party atmosphere with a real pirate’s bar and a fish market for culinary treasures from river, lake and sea.

Further downstream you’ll pass by baroque St. Florian Monastery and the town of Enns, the oldest in Austria.

But the real treat in terms of landscape and culture is the Strudengau, a narrow valley of the Danube. The historic boatmen’s town of Grein has several attractions to see, such as striking Greinburg Castle and one of the oldest municipal theatres in the German-speaking world. After Strudengau, you approach the Lower Austrian section of the Danube Cycle Path. First comes the pilgrimage church at Maria Taferl, then you enter the valley of Wachau.

WACHAU Am Beginn der weltberühmten Weinbauregion, die auch UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe ist, thront eine barocke Perle: Hoch über der Donau haben die Benediktinermönche das ehrwürdige Stift Melk errichtet. Weiter geht es über die Donaubrücke von Melk nach Emmersdorf.

Es lohnt sich, hier einen kleinen Umweg stromaufwärts zu investieren und drei Kilometer nach Klein-Pöchlarn zu radeln, um das engagierte Projekt zur Rettung der Bienen von Imkerfamilie Heinzle zu besuchen. Der Bienenpark informiert und zeigt die Welt der Honigbienen. Durch die Spende der ARCOTEL Hotels kann der Bienenpark dieses Jahr um ein begehbares Waben-Info-Haus mit vielen interessanten und wichtigen Informationen rund um die Biene erweitert werden.

Zurück am Radweg, wartet ein Geheimtipp für Wasserratten: Aggsbach-Markt punktet im Sommer mit einem Sandstrand wie an der Adria. Die Füße in den feinen Donausand stecken, Sandburgen bauen und am Erlebnisspielplatz so richtig herumtollen. Willendorf zeigt im Venusium stolz seine Venus und Groisbach hält sensationelle Steckerlfisch-Spezialitäten zur Stärkung bereit.

Spitz, St. Michael, Weißenkirchen und Dürnstein bedürfen keiner weiteren Erklärung, sondern sollten einfach erlebt werden. Auf der einen Seite zieht der Donaustrom vorbei, auf der anderen Seite schmiegen sich die Terrassenweingärten sanft in die Landschaft. Bodenständige Heurigenlokale mit den edlen Weinen der Wachau und herzhaften Produkten der Region laden zu einer Genusspause. Über dieser malerischen Szenerie erheben sich alte Ruinen, wie die sagenumwobenen Reste der Burgen Aggstein, Hinterhaus und Dürnstein.

The Wachau is a world-famous wine region and UNESCO World Heritage Site. An especially gorgeous baroque jewel, standing majestically high above the Danube, is the Benedictine abbey at Melk. Here the cycle path crosses the river to Emmersdorf.

But first we recommend a short detour 3 km back upstream to Klein-Pöchlarn to check out the Heinzle beekeeping family’s save-the-bees project. Bienenpark Klein Pöchlarn has a wealth of information about the world of the honeybees. Thanks to a donation from ARCOTEL Hotels, it is possible to expand the bee park this year with the addition of a walk-in honeycomb information house offering lots of interesting and important information about bees.

Back on the trail, you’ll be rewarded with an aquatic surprise. The town of Aggsbach Markt scores big points with visitors in the summer with a sandy beach just like you’d find at the Mediterranean. Dip your toes into the fine Danube sand, build a sandcastle or go wild at the adventure playground. At Willendorf, you can marvel at one of the most famous Venus figurines on display in the Venusium.

And for a bite to eat, delicious grilled fish on a stick await in Groisbach. Spitz, St. Michael, Weißenkirchen and Dürnstein need no further introduction – just come and see for yourself. On the one side of the towns, the Danube glides by. On the other side, the terraced vineyards hang gracefully in the landscape. Taverns with local flair, fine Wachau wines and hearty regional products offer themselves for an enjoyable rest stop. Rising above this picturesque scene are several old ruins shrouded in legend, such as the castles at Aggstein, Hinterhaus and Dürnstein.

The city of Krems, known as the gateway to the Wachau, is not only a centre of winegrowing and winemaking but also offers visitors plenty of tradition, good food and shopping opportunities. Before the Danube Cycle Path takes you into the Tulln Danube Region, Göttweig Abbey beckons from the southern shore – the climb up to the Benedictine monastery is a real challenge. Heading towards Tulln, the trail leads through wide plains with fantastic views. Once you’ve passed the old Roman settlement of Traismauer and the cities of Tulln and Stockerau, there’s just one more cultural treat on the programme before the home stretch to Vienna: Klosterneuburg Monastery, an impressive baroque palace monastery and winery, intended as an Austrian version of Spain’s Escorial. After all of the different landscapes, shaped by the Danube and the people that live here, after all of the cultural and historical highlights, we finally roll into Vienna…

WIEN Geschafft – Check-in im ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser Wien, an dem der Donauradweg fast unmittelbar vorbeiführt Richtung Bratislava. Auf der anderen Seite erstreckt sich die Donauinsel, das Entlastungsgerinne der Neuen Donau. 20 Kilometer lang und 200 Meter breit, bietet das Naherholungsgebiet viel Abwechslung – Spaß, Action und Erholung für die ganze Familie ist garantiert. Radfahrer, Jogger, Inlineskater und Party People bevölkern die Insel rund um die Uhr. Die Copa Cagrana mit Copa Beach und Sunken City vermittelt Urlaubsfeeling pur. Küchen aus aller Welt, befeuert von heißen Rhythmen und coolen Cocktails, bringen einen Hauch Karibik in die Stadt.

Stromabwärts lädt der Vienna City Beach Club zu Volleyball und chilligen Stunden im Liegestuhl mit guter Musik.

Stand Up Paddling kann auch probiert werden, und wer mehr Action sucht, kann sich am Wakeboardlift an der Schleusenbrücke oder an der Freestyle Waterramp austoben. Bevor es weiter Richtung Lobau in den Wiener Urwald geht, säumen noch nette Lokale den Weg. Ein unübersehbarer Querstrich weist auf den Beginn des offiziellen FFK-Gebietes hin.

Made it! Time to check into ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser Vienna, almost right on the Danube Cycle Path in the direction of Bratislava. If you want a place to rest in Vienna without the noise of the city in your ears, this is the place for you. The bikes can be safely parked in the underground car park.

And the location is especially perfect in the summer.

On the one side of the hotel, you’ll find a little holiday paradise: Alte Donau, an old arm of the Danube and a popular recreational area for water sports or just lazing about. If you want to take it up with the wind, this is an ideal battleground in the middle of the city. Sailing (introductory courses on weekends), wind surfing, paddle boats and electric boats fill the water. Swimmers and sunbathers tend to congregate at the legendary Gänsehäufel, Vienna’s first municipal bathing beach that opened in the year 1907. This is where the typical Viennese spend their free summer days. A must-see.

On the other side, there’s Danube Island and the flood relief channel of the New Danube. Nearly 20 kilometres long and 200 metres wide, the Danube Island recreational area offers plenty of variety – fun, action, rest and relaxation – for the whole family. Cyclists, joggers, inline skaters and the party crowd populate the island from dawn to dusk and beyond. Copa Cagrana, with its Copa Beach and Sunken City, will give you the feeling of being on a Caribbean holiday, with international cuisine fuelled by hot rhythms and cool cocktails.

At the Vienna City Beach Club, only a short ways away, you can play a game of volleyball or chill out to some good tunes while reclining in a beach chair. You can also try stand up paddle boarding or, if you feel the need for more action, check out the wakeboard lift and the freestyle water ramp. Further afield, there’s the Lobau, a pristine, almost jungle-like recreational area. Several inviting restaurants will entice you along the way there. Look out for the conspicuous line across the path: it marks the official start of the nudist zone.

3. Vegan Ball

Zum dritten Mal organisierte die Vegane Gesellschaft Österreich unter Federführung von Felix Hnat den Vegan Ball im ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser Wien.

Rund 400 Gäste feierten am 14. Februar eine rauschende Ballnacht im Stil der 1920er-Jahre. Küchenchef Johann Schwarz kreierte gemeinsam mit Promikoch Siegfried Kröpfl vegane Köstlichkeiten.

The Vegan Society of Austria, under its chairman Felix Hnat, organised the third Vegan Ball at ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser Vienna on 14 February. Some 400 guests followed the invitation for an enchanting ball night with a 1920s theme.

The name is an homage to John F. Kennedy, a historic personality, charismatic speaker and visionary. His clear and simple message inspired confidence and moved the people he spoke to. With his famous words “Ich bin ein Berliner”, the 35th president of the United States won the hearts of millions during his speech on 26 June 1963 in front of Schöneberg Town Hall in West-Berlin. Kennedy would have turned 100 this year. He fell victim to an assassin’s bullet in November 1963, but in Berlin the myth of John F. Kennedy lives on to this day.

“Meine Zeit in Paris war die ideale Kombination zwischen Mode und Architektur. Eine inspirierende Zeit, die mich bis heute maßgeblich bei vielen Projekten unterstützt und leitet. Nach meiner Ausbildung als Modedesignerin erkannte ich bald die Schnelllebigkeit der Materie, doch in Kombination mit Architektur ergab das für mich die perfekte Synergie. LOOK & FEEL Die Zimmer sind die Essenz der Marke und bis ins Detail auf das Konzept abgestimmt. Für das Endergebnis waren mehr als 800 Renderings (Anm. der Red.: verschiedene Entwürfe) notwendig.

Das Highlight in jedem Zimmer ist jetzt die weiche, gebogene, akustisch wirksame Stoffwand. Sie besticht allein schon durch ihre edle Struktur und zusätzlich durch die Punktprägung, die stark an das MOOONSLogo erinnert. Es war eine großartige Aufgabe, genau diesen Stoff zu finden und zu verarbeiten. So könnte jedes Raumdetail seine eigene Geschichte erzählen. Auch dem Designerstuhl ging ein digitaler Sessellaunch von 400 Stühlen voraus, 100 kamen in Frage. 50 wurden gerendert, 20 davon “My time in Paris was a perfect combination of fashion and architecture. PERFECT TOGETHER I love experimenting with materials, textiles and colours – it’s an inexhaustible source of creativity for me. Dressing up a hotel is an exciting challenge with completely different demands of functionality and design. In a hotel project, you shouldn’t take yourself too seriously. Of course, the project needs to bear your signature. But you shouldn’t forget that it needs to speak to many people. Each detail plays a decisive role in such a synthesis of the arts.

The best example of this is the lobby of MOOONS. Set against a deliberately minimalist choice of furnishings with a used look and imitation-rust floor tiles, the allin-gold reception stands out in stark contrast. The question keeps repeating itself: Would I book this hotel for myself? Too perfect is also not good. A hotel is no theatre backdrop. If the guest feels pleasantly surprised by the interiors and by the design, then we’ve done something right. People should look back on their stay with a “Wow, that was amazing!“

Das beste Beispiel dafür ist die Lobby im MOOONS, die bewusst minimalistisch bestückt wurde, wo Elemente im UsedLook wie die mächtigen Bodenfliesen im Rost-Look überraschen und die Rezeption als extravagantes Pendant in Gold alle Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zieht. Man fragt sich immer wieder: Würde ich das Hotel selbst buchen? Zu perfekt ist auch nicht gut, denn ein Hotel ist keine Theaterkulisse. Wenn der Gast sich vom Interieur und Design angenehm überrascht fühlt, dann haben wir es richtiggemacht. Jeder soll mitnehmen: Wow, da war was!“

MOOONS ZUR PERSON: Petra Maier studierte Architektur in Wien und Graz. Von 1998 bis 2002 war sie Geschäftsführerin des Künstlervereins Forum Stadtpark Graz.

Bei den Architekten Jakob + MacFarlane in Paris war sie einige Jahre für deren Wettbewerbswesen zuständig. 2005 wechselte sie nach Wien zu Moser Architects und führte die Entwurfsabteilung bis 2011. Seit 2012 leitet sie die Abteilung Projektplanung und ist für das Planen, Steuern

und Kontrollieren aller Planungsphasen zur Erzielung einer ästhetisch qualitativ hochwertigen Architektur verantwortlich.

PARTICULARS: Petra Maier studied architecture in Vienna and Graz. From 1998 to 2002, she was managing director of the artists’ association Forum Stadtpark Graz. She spent several years in Paris as competition coordinator for the architects Jakob + MacFarlane. In 2005, she joined Moser Architects in Vienna to head the design department. Der unkomplizierte Küchenstil von Johann Schwarz beweist das Gegenteil und spiegelt sich in jedem seiner Gerichte. STECKERLBROT { } TWISTED BREAD ON A STICK

Hefe mit Zucker in ca. 1/3 des Wassers (lauwarm) auflösen und kurz gehen lassen. Mit dem restlichen Wasser, Mehl und Salz vermischen und einige Minuten kräftig durchkneten. Danach ca. 40 Minuten gehen lassen und anschließend noch einmal kräftig durchkneten. Je nach Bedarf geschnittene Oliven oder Trockentomaten in die Masse einmengen. Den Teig rund um Holzstäbchen (vorher in Wasser einlegen!) wickeln und über der Glut backen.

Dissolve the yeast with sugar in about 1/3 of the water (lukewarm). Take the remaining water, mix with the flour and salt and knead for a few minutes. Let stand for about 40 minutes before kneading again. Mix in olive slices or dried tomatoes if desired. Twist the dough around wooden sticks (soak in water first!) and bake the bread over heat.

4 Paradeiser waschen und halbieren. Mit einem Löffel entkernen. Quinoa unter heißem Wasser kurz abspülen und in einen Topf geben. Gemüsefond aufkochen und über die Quinoa gießen, bei kleiner Hitze ca. 20 Minuten abgedeckt ziehen lassen. In der Zwischenzeit Knoblauch und Schalotte schälen und fein schneiden, die Chilischoten halbieren, entkernen und ebenfalls fein hacken. Paprikaschote in 0,5 cm große Würfel schneiden. Olivenöl in einer Pfanne erhitzen, Knoblauch und Schalotten zugeben und farblos anschwitzen. Chili und Paprika zugeben und ca. 2 Minuten braten.

Mit Salz und Pfeffer würzen. Die Masse mit Quinoa und fein geschnittenem Koriander vermengen. Die Paradeiser mit der pikanten Mischung füllen und bei leichter Hitze am Rand des Grills ca. 7 bis 8 Minuten garen.

Wash the tomatoes, cut them in half and use a spoon to remove the seeds. Briefly rinse the quinoa under hot water and place in a saucepan. Bring the vegetable stock to the boil and pour over the quinoa. Cover and simmer over low heat for about 20 minutes. In the meantime, peel and finely chop the garlic and shallot. Cut the chili peppers in half, remove the seeds and chop into small pieces. Cut the bell pepper into 0.5 cm cubes. Heat some olive oil in a pan, add the garlic and shallots and glaze. Add the chili and bell peppers and sauté for about 2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Mix in the quinoa and chopped coriander and fill the tomatoes with the quinoa mixture. Place the stuffed tomatoes at the edge of a low-heat grill for about 7–8 minutes.

Zutaten für 4 Personen | Ingredients (serves 4) > 1 kg Melanzani > 2 EL Olivenöl 1 kg aubergine (eggplant) 2 tbsp. olive oil > 6 EL Olivenöl > 1 Bund glatte Petersilie 6 tbsp. olive oil 1 bunch smooth parsley > Salz, Pfeffer Füllung | Filling Salt, pepper > 80 g Basmatireis 80 g Basmati rice Sauce | Sauce > 120 g Zwiebeln > 150 g Soja-Joghurt 120 g onions 150 g soy yoghurt > 1 Knoblauchzehe > 2 EL veganer Sauerrahm 1 garlic clove 2 tbsp. vegan sour cream > 200 g Paprikaschoten > 2 Knoblauchzehen 200 g bell peppers 2 garlic cloves > 1 Peperoni > 1 EL Petersilie, 1 Greek pepper fein gehackt > 300 g Tomaten 1 tbsp. finely chopped 300 g tomatoes parsley > 70 g veganer Käse > Salz, Pfeffer 70 g vegan cheese Salt, pepper Melanzani waschen, Stielansatz entfernen und der Länge nach in ca. 2 mm dünne Scheiben schneiden. Anschließend in Salzwasser legen, damit sie nicht braun werden.

Für die Füllung den Reis in reichlich Salzwasser etwa 20 Minuten kochen. Danach das restliche Wasser abgießen und den Reis beiseitestellen. In der Zwischenzeit Zwiebel und Knoblauch schälen und fein hacken. Paprikaschote halbieren und in 0,5 cm große Würfel schneiden. Peperoni sehr fein hacken. Tomaten blanchieren, häuten und aushöhlen, das Fruchtfleisch fein würfeln. In einer Pfanne 1 EL Olivenöl erhitzen und die Zwiebel- und Knoblauchwürfel darin anschwitzen. Paprikastücke zugeben und 5 Minuten anschwitzen. Tomaten und gehackte Petersilie zufügen.

Vom Herd nehmen und etwas abkühlen lassen. Käse reiben, Reis untermischen und mit Salz und Pfeffer würzen.

Melanzanischeiben aus dem Salzwasser nehmen und mit einem Küchentuch trocken tupfen. Mit der Reismischung bestreichen und Röllchen formen, eventuell mit Zahnstocher fixieren. Auf den Grill legen und rundherum anbraten.

Für die Sauce alle Zutaten gut vermengen und zu den Melanzaniröllchen servieren.

Wash the aubergine, remove the stalk, cut lengthwise into 2 mm slices and place in salt water so the aubergine doesn’t turn brown. For the stuffing, cook the rice in lots of salt water for about 20 minutes. Drain the water and set the rice aside. In the meantime, peel and finely chop the onion and garlic. Slice the bell pepper in half and cut into 0.5 cm cubes. Finely chop the Greek pepper. Blanch and peel the tomatoes, scoop out the seeds and cut the flesh into small cubes. Heat 1 tbsp. of olive oil in a pan and toss the onions and garlic. Add the bell peppers and sauté for 5 minutes, then add the tomatoes and chopped parsley. Remove from the stove and let cool. Grate the cheese, mix in the rice, and season with salt and pepper.

Remove the aubergine slices from the salt water and dab dry with a paper towel. Brush with the rice mixture, form into rolls and fix with a toothpick if desired. Place on the grill and gently brown on all sides. For the sauce, mix the ingredients together and serve with the aubergine rolls.

Fruchtstücke mit einem Kartoffelstampfer zerdrücken. Anschließend noch weitere 30 Minuten ziehen lassen. Die Flüssigkeit durch ein feines Sieb passieren und nochmals aufkochen lassen. Heiß in sterilisierte Flaschen füllen und sofort verschließen. Der Sirup ist im Verhältnis 1:7 verdünnbar. Nach dem Öffnen ca. vier Monate haltbar!

it der Fertigstellung der ersten Eisenbahnstrecke von Wien nach Triest Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts erhielt das Reisen eine neue Qualität, Das noble Publikum – vor allem der betuchte Adel und die wohlhabenden Bürger – strömte zur Sommerfrische ans Meer. Mondäne Seebäder entlang der Adriaküste waren das Ziel der gehobenen Gesellschaft. Die Damen und Herren aus dem nasskalten Mitteleuropa logierten natürlich nur in Grand Hotels ab, die für sie eine zweite Heimat auf Zeit wurden.

Am Nachmittag und auch so manchem Abend widmete man sich dem anspruchsvollen Kartenspiel. Bevorzugt zum Bridge traf man sich in den eleganten Hotelräumlichkeiten und verbrachte eine gute Zeit: Es wurde gelacht und gezockt, kokettiert und politisiert – und der Champagner floss in Strömen. Das noble und diskrete Ambiente der Luxushotels gab die Sicherheit, sich in exklusiver Gesellschaft zu befinden. Bridge wurde zum “Elitesport“ und erreichte Kultcharakter. Speziell das weibliche Geschlecht nützte die Bridge-Partien, um Kontakte zu knüpfen – heute würde man dazu wohl “Networking“ sagen – und den gesellschaftlichen Status zu verankern. Wer nicht Bridge spielte, war damals “out“.

Der mehr oder weniger elitäre Clubgedanke lebt bis heute weiter. Man trifft sich zum Kartenspiel, tauscht sich aus, politisiert und verbessert die Welt. Auch heute bevorzugt so mancher Bridge-Club ein gediegenes Hotel-Ambiente als Location für seine Treffen und Turniere. Der Wunsch nach gemeinsamem gesellschaftlichem Engagement ist en vogue, und ein klassi-

he completion of the first railway from Vienna to Trieste in the mid-19th century lent a whole new quality to travelling. High society – above all members of the aristocracy and the wealthy bourgeoisie – flocked south for a summer by the sea. Their destination: the chic seaside resorts along the Adriatic coast. Naturally, the ladies and gentleman from the colder, wetter climes of Central Europe stayed exclusively at Grand Hotels – which were like a temporary second home for them.

The afternoon and some evenings were dedicated to playing cards. The cultivated game of choice was bridge, and people would meet in the elegant hotel rooms to pass the time laughing and playing, flirting and talking politics. And the champagne flowed. The noble and discreet atmosphere of the luxury hotels offered the assurance of being in exclusive company. Bridge became an elite “sport” and achieved cult status. Especially members of the fairer sex used bridge games as a way to establish contacts – today we would call it “networking” – and to secure their social status. If you didn’t play bridge, you were “out”.

This more or less elitist attitude remains to this day. People meet to play cards, gossip, talk politics and put the world to rights. Many bridge clubs still choose a tasteful hotel atmosphere for their meetings and tournaments. Social commitments are back in vogue, and a classic game of cards like bridge is the perfect occasion for all ages.

At the 4-star ARCOTEL Castellani in Salzburg, the cards are shuffled three times a week. The hotel, a green oasis in the city, is the ideal location for concentrated playing and social gatherings. Der Kontrakt ist nur zu erfüllen, wenn Ost den Herz-König hält. Zunächst ist jedoch zu klären, welche Karte auf das Ausspiel gelegt wird, D oder 5? Natürlich die D. Süd muss hoffen, dass West unter dem König ausgespielt hat. Legt Süd die 5, ist nichts gewonnen. Ost legt eine Mittelkarte (die 8 würde schon genügen), um Süds Ass herauszutreiben und die Dame ist dem König im nächsten Stich hilflos ausgeliefert. Ost deckt die Dame mit dem König. Es lohnt jetzt nicht zu ducken, denn die Erfüllung des Kontraktes hängt allein vom Coeur-Schnitt ab. Süd geht mit dem Pik Ass zum Tisch, um den Coeur-Schnitt zu machen. Und wieder steht Süd vor einer Entscheidung: Welche Karte soll zum Schnitt vorgelegt werden, die Dame, die 9 oder die 2? Die 2 wäre falsch, denn Süd hat keinen weiteren Eingang zum Tisch. Folglich scheint die Dame richtig zu sein, denn durch sie kann der König zu dritt bei Ost herausgeschnitten werden. Doch wie ist es, wenn der König zu viert sitzt? Dann muss Süd für drei Schnitte am Tisch bleiben! Das geht nur, wenn Süd die 9 vorlegt und aus der Hand die 5 zugibt (Ost kann nicht decken, ohne Süd sofort die 3 zusätzlichen Stiche zu liefern), dann die Dame und aus der Hand die 10 und schließlich die 2 zur A-B-Gabel.

South has 6 sure tricks: 2 in spades, 1 in hearts, 1 in diamonds and 2 in clubs. That leaves 3 tricks to be developed, with hearts the only possible suit. The contract can only be fulfilled if East holds the king of hearts. But first you need to decide which card to answer with: the queen or the 5? Of course, with the queen. (South had to hope that West leads lower than the king.) If South played the 5 instead, nothing would have been gained. East would play a middle card (the 8 would be enough) to force out South’s ace and the queen would be at the king’s mercy in the next trick. So South plays the queen and East covers with the king. It’s not worth it to be shy now, as fulfilling the contract depends solely on the hearts. After taking the first trick, South plays spades for the ace in order to lead up into the finesse in hearts. And again, south has to decide: Which card to play for the finesse? The queen, the 9 or the 2? The 2 would be wrong, because then south would lose the lead. The queen therefore seems to be right: it could force out the king if East has three hearts. But what if the king is one of four? Then South would have to keep the lead for three finesses!

That will only work if South plays the 9 from the dummy and the 5 from the hand (East can’t cover without immediately giving South the next 3 tricks). South then leads with the queen and plays the 10 from the hand, followed by the 2 to finesse towards the ace-jack fork.

ARCOTEL Nike Linz recently introduced sustainable bedding and towels in all 174 guest rooms. The fabrics were produced fair with environmental and social responsibility. Our partner was Vienna Textilservice. The 4-star superior hotel is the only hotel in Austria that offers fair linen certified by FAIRTRADE Austria, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and the Austrian Ecolabel.

This was the exciting topic at the focus of the 6th ARCOTEL industry meeting. Matthias Koch, managing director of the Austrian Hotel Association; strategic consultant Gerald Kröll; Caroline Mitterdorfer from travel startup conichi; and Martin Lachout, CEO of ARCOTEL Hotel AG met to discuss essential questions for the future of the hotel industry.

Dr. Renate Wimmer, owner of the ARCOTEL Group, started the ARCOTEL industry meeting three years ago to deal with the latest issues facing the hotel business and to promote the interaction, communication and exchange among hoteliers, industry insiders and policymakers. Topics of debate include current challenges, trends and occurrences.

THE HOTEL tality tolerate?” A brief summary at the outset: The future holds several concepts in store – from robot hotels to personalised service.

On the one hand, the hotel of the future means digitalisation, storytelling and the creation of experiences to meet the expectations of the modern guest. What does that entail? Elegant living spaces in combination with modern technologies like smart TV with Netflix and Amazon Prime, co-working spaces and an app for self check-in/check-out and digital room key. To play in this league, today’s hotelier has to think more than one step ahead.

Right now, Generation Y is still the measure of all things. But Generation Z is already moving into position. In the future, other criteria will count when choosing a hotel. The demands of the guests have changed enormously in the recent past.

People who use the newest technologies in their daily life don’t want to go without them at their hotel. Social media is the way to reach the guest. Short-lived, but efficient and with enormous reach.

On the other hand, the focus is supposed to move to more personal service. The new technologies aren’t just essential for the guests; they also make it easier to handle various back-office activities. That is seen very positively: the technical facilitation of administrative tasks helps make more room for the personal guest contact. And here we come full circle: a hotel will only impress if high-tech is offered in combination with personal guest service.
