ie Bienen fliegen wieder! Unsere Aktion “Give Bees A Chance“ für den Erhalt der Bienenpopulationen “summt“ weiter. Herzlichen Dank den Tausenden Gästen, die zugunsten unseres Bienenprojektes auf die Zimmerreinigung verzichtet haben. Dadurch konnte ARCOTEL Hotels für 2015 den beachtlichen Beitrag von 17.000 Euro zur Rettung der Bienen durch die Organisation MUTTER ERDE leisten und 2016 wird sich dieser Betrag voraussichtlich mindestens verdoppeln.

Ganz nach unserem Motto “Kleine Schritte, große Erfolge“ gehen wir nachhaltig weiter: Diese STORiES-Ausgabe wurde erstmals auf PEFC-zertifiziertem Papier gedruckt.

Aus umweltfreundlichen Materialien erzeugt wurden auch die Elektroinseln, die vom ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser Wien seit Kurzem ablegen – ARCOpulco Meetings oder Events völlig neu interpretiert. Mehr dazu auf Seite 32.

he bees are in flight again! Our Give Bees A Chance campaign to save bee populations is still buzzing. We would therefore like to thank the thousands of guests who chose not to have their rooms cleaned and support our bee project. This enabled ARCOTEL Hotels to donate the substantial sum of 17,000 euros for 2015 to the organisation MUTTER ERDE to save bees. In 2016 this amount is likely to at least be doubled.

In keeping with our motto Small Steps, Big Successes we are moving forward with a focus on sustainability. This edition of STORiES is the first to be printed on PEFC-certified paper.

The electro islands, which recently began casting off from the ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser Vienna, are also made of environmentally-friendly materials – ARCOpulco meetings or events in a completely new style. Read more on page 32.

Wien, das ist Kaffeehaus, Walzer und Wiener Schnitzel. Wien, das sind Theater, Oper und Museen von Weltrang. Wien, das sind herzige Buben mit Engelsstimmen, weiße Pferde in vollendeter Dressur und feine Weine in trendigen Vinotheken. Aber das allein macht eine Stadt noch nicht lebenswert. Dazu braucht es mehr als Lipizzaner, Sisi-Träume und Sängerknaben.

Vienna means cafés, waltzes and wiener schnitzel. Vienna means world-class theatres, operas and museums. Vienna means innocent-looking boys with angelic voices, white horses performing classical dressage and fine wines in trendy bars. But that alone doesn’t make a city a great place to live. That takes more than Lipizzaner, dreams of Sisi and boys’ choirs.

m in einer Stadt zu wohnen und zu leben – und seien es nur einige Tage als Besucher –, braucht man Ruhepunkte. Speziell im Sommer, wenn in der Hitze der Stadt Aperol-Animo und Bacardi-Feeling mitschwingen. Banale Dinge, die den Menschen so selbstverständlich sind, sind dann gefragt – das Grün, das Wasser und die Gemütlichkeit.

WIEN AM WALD Wien ist eine waldreiche Stadt. Die Westgrenze bildet der Wienerwald mit seinen beliebten Hausbergen wie dem Kahlenberg oder dem Leopoldsberg. Ihr dichter Baumbestand versorgt die Stadt nicht nur mit Sauerstoff, sondern auch mit Wander- und Mountainbike-Routen jeglicher Länge und jeden Schwierigkeitsgrades. Sie laden dazu ein, über Stock und Stein, durch den Wald und über Hügelketten aus der Stadt hinaus und wieder zum Ausgangspunkt zurück zu radeln. Natürlich sind auch die Wanderwege gut und übersichtlich ausgeschildert.

WIEN AM NATIONALPARK Wer die Natur lieber “pur“ hat, findet genau das am anderen Ende der Stadt: Wien ist die einzige Millionenstadt der Welt, die über einen Nationalpark verfügt. Der “Nationalpark Donau-Auen“ beginnt in Wien und erstreckt sich über 9.300 Hektar als nahezu unberührte, oft sogar tatsächlich urwaldartige Aulandschaft donauabwärts. Das “NationalparkBoot“ fährt bis 26. Oktober täglich um 9 Uhr von der Salztorbrücke beim Schwedenplatz ab und macht es möglich, den Nationalpark vom Wasser aus zu erobern. Sanft, versteht sich, als stiller Beobachter eines prachtvollen Naturschauspiels. Die Fahrt dauert inklusive Nationalparkführung rund vier Stunden. Entspannung beim Heurigen

WIEN AM STRAND Die Donau wurde jahrzehntelang einfach “übersehen“. Seit der Strom in den 1870er-Jahren reguliert wurde, ist das Entlastungsgerinne – der künstliche Nebenarm der Donau – ein begehrtes Freizeitziel. Die Ufer der Donauinsel – insgesamt 42 Kilometer Erholung – sind eine Sensation, um die man Wien auch beneidet. Mit den U-Bahn-Linien U1 (Station Donauinsel), U6 (Station Neue Donau) und U2 (Donaumarina, Donaustadtbrücke) ist sie leicht erreichbar. Rund um die U1-Station Donauinsel gibt es zahlreiche Lokale und Bars. Vom Zentrum sind es exakt sechs Minuten, vom ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser sogar nur eine Gehminute, um Strand-Feeling zu genießen, zu flanieren und zu entspannen oder per Fahrrad, Rollerskates oder Laufschuhen die Insel zu erkunden.

WIEN AM POOL Doch mit 42 Kilometern Badestrand an der Neuen Donau haben die Wiener lange nicht genug. Sobald die Temperaturen es nur irgendwie zulassen, werden die Bäder gestürmt. Zum Beispiel die Strandbäder an der Alten Donau mit weitläufigen Parkanlagen, wo man selbst an heißen Sommersonntagen noch ruhige Plätze findet. Oder man flüchtet auf einen der Hügel rund um die Stadt: Wer im Sommer tagsüber das Krapfenwaldlbad im 19. Bezirk oder das Schönbrunner Bad besucht, bekommt unweigerlich den Eindruck, dass die Jungen und Schönen lieber die Stadt zu ihren Füßen lassen – sei‘s drum: Wer die Chance hat, einen heißen Sommertag in netter Gesellschaft an einem Pool mit Panoramablick über die Stadt zu genießen, kann mit seinem schlechten Gewissen offenbar locker leben.

WIEN AM WEINBERG Innerhalb der Wiener Stadtgrenzen wachsen auf zirka 700 Hektar Weinreben – viele davon auf den Hängen der Wiener Hausberge. Dort, wo Wein wächst, wird er auch getrunken. Und weil Wien gemütlich ist, wird beim Trinken auch gut und herzhaft gegessen. Wenn dann vielleicht noch typisch wienerische Heurigenmusik erklingt, ist der Himmel ganz nah. Denn wer lang genug den Schrammelmusikern zuhört, spürt die Seele der Stadt. Im Herzen. Dann ist man wirklich angekommen. In Wien. Einer Stadt zum Wohlfühlen.

o live and enjoy life in a city – even if it’s only for a few days as a visitor – you need somewhere to unplug and chill, especially when the air is soaked with Aperol and Bacardi feeling. Then it’s the very ordinary things, the things people take for granted that are called for – parks and gardens, water and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

VIENNA BY THE FOREST Vienna is a city with plenty of trees. The western periphery of the city borders the Vienna Woods with its famous landmarks such as the Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg hills. The dense forest not only supplies the city with oxygen, it also boasts an extensive network of hiking and mountain bike trails of all lengths and degrees of difficulty. They offer the perfect opportunity for some cross-country cycling through the forest and over the hills beyond the city limits and back to your starting point. Of course, the hiking trails are equally well-signposted.

VIENNA BY THE NATIONAL PARK If you prefer nature in its purest form, you’ll find exactly that at the other end of the city: Vienna is one of only a small number of large cities to have a national park. The National Park Donau-Auen begins in Vienna and covers 9,300 hectares of almost untouched, and very often truly virgin, riparian woodland stretching downstream along the Danube. The National Park boat that departs every day until 26 October from Salztorbrücke on Schwedenplatz at 9.00 a.m. lets you enjoy the national park from the best possible vantage point. Namely, from the water, as a silent observer of a magnificent natural spectacle. The trip, including a tour of the national park with a ranger, takes around four hours.

VIENNA BY THE BEACH For many decades the Danube was simply “overlooked.” But since the river was regulated in the 1870s and a flood protection system implemented one hundred years later, the Alte Donau and the Neue Donau flood relief channel have been popular recreation areas. The Danube Island (separating the main channel of the Danube from the Neue Donau) boasts 42 kilometres of shoreline beach, a sensation for which Vienna is widely envied. Moreover, it is easily accessible using the metro lines U1 (Donauinsel), U6 (Neue Donau) and U2 (Donaumarina or Donaustadtbrücke). Around the U1 station Donauinsel there are also numerous bars and bistros.

From the centre of town you’re exactly six minutes, and from the ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser just one minute on foot, away from beach feeling, relaxing, enjoying a stroll or exploring the island on a bike, roller skates or with your running shoes.

But not even 42 kilometres of river-side beach on the Neue Donau are enough for the Viennese. As soon as temperatures permit, they throng to the open-air swimming pools. For example, the baths on the Alte Donau with its extensive parks, where you can still find a quiet spot on even the hottest summer days. Alternatively, you can escape to one of the hills that surround the city: Anyone who goes to the Krapfenwaldlbad in the 19th district, or the Schönbrunner Bad in summer, gets the distinct impression the young and beautiful enjoy having the city at their feet – but so what: With the chance to enjoy a hot summer day in good company beside a pool with a panorama view of the city, they obviously don’t care that the rest of us are going green with envy.

VIENNA BY THE VINEYARDS Vines are grown on some 700 hectares in Vienna, in many cases on the slopes surrounding the city. And where wine is made, it is also drunk. And because wine drinking is a pleasurable pastime, it is usually accompanied by good hearty food. And when perhaps typical Viennese tavern music strikes up, heaven’s not far. If you listen to the traditional Schrammel quartet for long enough, you’ll feel the city’s soul. In your heart. And then you’ll really have arrived. In Vienna.

With immediate effect two bee colonies have taken on responsibility for the production of honey on the roofs of the two hotels.

mker Michael Bauer von der Altländer Honig-Manufaktur bringt Bienenvölker auf Hamburgs Dächer. Ob Hotel oder Krankenhaus: In der Hansestadt schwirren viele seiner fleißigen Bienchen durch die Gegend. Was die Wenigsten wissen: Viele Pflanzen, die in der Stadt wachsen, mögen die Bienen ganz besonders. Michael Bauer erklärt: “Bienen haben keinen Bock auf Raps und sind daher gern in der Stadt.“ Das Verschwinden der Bienen wird zwar oft thematisiert, doch das Wissen über sie ist meist sehr gering. So verfügen Bienenvölker etwa über kollektive Intelligenz und organisieren die Strukturen ihres Volkes sehr sorgfältig, was der Imker so ausdrückt: “Bei den Bienen ist es wie bei den Borg – sie sind demokratisch, schlau und brutal.“ (Für Nicht-Insider: Die Borg sind eines der Völker im Star-Trek-Universum.)

Günter Jung, Direktor des ARCOTEL Onyx Hamburg, war schnell Feuer und Flamme für die Idee, gemeinsam mit einem Imker Bienenvölker auf dem Dach des Hotels anzusiedeln. Der Honig bereichert das Frühstücksbuffet. Auch im ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser Wien besiedelt ein Bienenvolk das Dach. Die Lage des Hotels an einem Seitenarm der Alten Donau bietet den Bienen ideale Lebensbedingungen.

Die elf ARCOTEL Hotels engagieren sich mit der Aktion “Give Bees a Chance“ seit 2015 für den Erhalt der Bienenpopulationen, deren Lebensraum durch kurzsichtiges und teilweise rücksichtsloses Verhalten in der Landwirtschaft sowie durch steigende Verkehrsbelastung bedroht ist. eekeeper Michael Bauer from the Altländer Honig-Manufaktur is settling bee populations on the roofs of Hamburg in locations as diverse as hotels and hospitals. Many of his busy bees can be seen buzzing around the Hanseatic city. What very few people know is that bees are especially partial to many of the plants that grow in the city. Michael Bauer explains: “Bees don’t like massflowering agricultural crops like rape and so love to live in urban settings”.

Although everyone is talking about the disappearance of bees, people in fact have very little knowledge about them. Bees exercise a collective intelligence for example and organise the structures of their colonies very carefully, or as the beekeeper puts it: “Bees are like the Borg – they are democratic, intelligent and brutal”. (For those of you not in the know: Borgs are an alien race in the Star Trek universe.)

From the very beginning, Günter Jung, director of the ARCOTEL Onyx Hamburg, was enthusiastic about cooperating with a beekeeper to settle bee colonies on the roof of his hotel. After all, the honey ends up on the breakfast table. Beehives have also been put on the roof of the ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser Vienna. The hotel’s location on what used to be a side arm of the Danube is an ideal habitat.

In 2015 the eleven ARCOTEL Hotels launched the Give Bees a Chance campaign to help ensure the survival of bee populations, whose habitats are under threat from short-sighted, and in some cases ruthless, practices in the agricultural industry and from increasing volumes of traffic. For every guest who voluntarily opts out of having their room cleaned, ARCOTEL Hotels donates a lump sum to help save bees. All the money raised in 2015 was donated to a bee protection programme run by the organisation MUTTER ERDE.

FÜRSTENTUM Über 1.100 Jahre – seit Bischof Rupert 696 hierherkam – stand Salzburg unter geistlicher Herrschaft. Im Zuge der Napoleonischen Kriege wurde 1803 das Fürsterzbistum aufgelöst und es folgte ein jahrelanger Streit zwischen Bayern und Österreich.

Nach dem Wiener Kongress wurde Salzburg schließlich im April 1816 dem Kaiserreich Österreich-Ungarn zugewiesen, wodurch es fast die Hälfte seiner Größe einbüßte.

KREISHAUPTSTADT Mit 1. Mai 1816 ist das Land Salzburg offiziell ein Teil von Österreich: Das bayrische Wappen wurde vom Doppeladler der Habsburger Monarchie abgelöst. Besonders bitter für die

stolzen Salzburger: Stadt und Land waren nicht mehr eigenständig – und nicht einmal ein eigenes Bundesland! Ab sofort gehörte es zu Oberösterreich, mit Linz als Landeshauptstadt.

Salzburg wurde zur einfachen Kreishauptstadt degradiert.

KULTURSTADT Salzburgs Bewohner erholten sich vom Schock der Bedeutungslosigkeit relativ schnell. Ab den 1840er-Jahren sorgte das Bürgertum für einen beispielslosen Aufschwung, indem es sich vor allem der Kunst und Kultur widmete. So wurde etwa 1844 der Salzburger Kulturverein gegründet, und mit der Festspielhausgemeinde und den jährlichen Festspielen wurde im Jahre 1917 der Grundstein für den heutigen Stellenwert der Mozartstadt in der Weltkultur gelegt.

PRINCE-ARCHBISHOPRIC For over 1,100 years – from the time when Bishop Rupert came here in the year 696 – Salzburg was under ecclesiastical rule.

In 1803, in the course of the Napoleonic wars, the prince-archbishopric was dissolved and this was followed by many years of conflict between Bavaria and Austria. After the Congress of Vienna, Salzburg was finally allotted to the Austro-Hungarian Empire in April 1816, whereby it forfeited almost half of its territory.

DISTRICT CAPITAL On 1 May 1816, the province of Salzburg officially became part of Austria: its Bavarian coat of arms was replaced by the double-headed eagle of the Habsburg monarchy. Something particularly hard for the proud people of Salzburg to accept was that the city and province were no longer independent – and not even a separate province! With immediate effect, it became part of Upper Austria, with Linz as the provincial capital. Salzburg was downgraded to a simple district capital.

CULTURAL CITY Salzburg’s inhabitants recovered from the shock of insignificance relatively quickly. From the 1840s onwards, the middle class citizenry created an unprecedented upswing by devoting itself primarily to art and culture. Thus, the Salzburg Cultural Association was founded in about 1844, and the establishment of the Festspielhausgemeinde festival organisation in 1917 paved the way for the prestigious position which the city of Mozart holds in world culture today.

Der winzige Laden unter einem Torbogen zwischen Staatsbrücke und Getreidegasse ist ein aromatisches Paradies: Käse aus Kuh-, Ziegen- und Schafsmilch, teils Rohmilch- oder Bioprodukte. Bereits seit 1892 besteht das Geschäft, seit 1997 bietet die Hamburgerin Barbara Soukup neben knapp 150 verschiedenen Käsesorten auch erstklassige Beratung. Besonders stolz ist sie auf regionale Raritäten wie einen Ziegenfrischkäse in Wildblüten von einem kleinen Lungauer Bauernhof.

The tiny shop under an archway between Staatsbrücke and Getreidegasse is an aromatic paradise: cheese made from cow’s, goat’s and sheep’s milk, partly raw milk delicacies and organic products. The shop has been in existence since 1892 and, since 1997, Barbara Soukup from Hamburg has been offering not only 150 different types of cheese, but also top-quality advice. She‘s particularly proud of regional rarities – such as a goat’s cottage cheese in wild flowers from a small Lungau farm.

as Thema “Engel“ fasziniert seit jeher. Die himmlischen Wesen begleiten die Menschen auf Schritt und Tritt: Längst haben sie die Kirchen verlassen und sind in unserem Alltag angekommen. Wir finden sie auf Postkarten und im Garten, auf Gebäudefassaden und in Baumärkten. Sie bevölkern Internetforen, Zeitschriften und Filme und nun auch den “Höhenrausch 2016“ in Linz.

LINZ IM HÖHENRAUSCH Der Ausstellungsparcours auf der Dachlandschaft der oberösterreichischen Landeshauptstadt erlebt dieses Jahr bereits die sechste Ausführung. Die einzigartige Kunstschau widmet sich 2016 dem Thema “Andere Engel“, zu der Professor Thomas Macho, der Kurator der Ausstellung, einlädt: “Betreten Sie die faszinierende Welt der himmlischen Wesen, wechseln Sie die Perspektive und entdecken Sie Kunst auf spielerische Weise und an einem ungewöhnlichen Ort!“ 60 Künstler haben in 38 Kunstprojekten das Engelmotiv auf überraschende und hintergründige Weise beleuchtet. “Engel sind nicht nur surreal und unwirklich, sondern auch mehrdeutig und widersprüchlich, jedenfalls nicht leicht zu fassen. Interessant ist, dass die Himmelswesen je nach Kulturkreis mit unterschied-

lichster Bedeutung aufgeladen werden. Sie können freundlich und segensbringend, aber auch, wie beim gefallenen Engel, böse sein“, erläutert der Kulturwissenschaftler.

KUNSTVOLLER PERSPEKTIVENWECHSEL Dem Besucher begegnet zunächst eine Versammlung von Alltagsengeln: putzige Himmelsbewohner in der Autowerbung, adrette Gartenfiguren oder feenhafte Wesen in esoterischen Zeitschriften. Nach diesem “Realitätsschub“ macht ein ausgeklügelter Rundweg den Kopf frei für neue und ganz andere Engelbilder.

Das noch vertraute und doch schon überraschende Thema der biblischen Engel wird ausführlich in der Ursulinenkirche behandelt. “Es freut uns natürlich sehr, dass wir die katholische Kirche für dieses Thema begeistern konnten. Unsere Besucher werden über die ungewohnte Darstellung der Engel in einem Gotteshaus sicher erstaunt sein!“, verrät der Kurator. Weiter geht es in die Wunderkammer im OK, wo die werktätigen Engel zu Gast sind, und auf das Dach des voestalpine open space, der sich in einen Spiegelraum verwandelt hat. Und auf dem Parkdeck der Raiffeisen Kunst Garage wächst sogar ein botanischer Engelgarten.

umans have always been fascinated by angels. These heavenly beings are always at our side, but they’ve long since moved outside church buildings and found a place out there in the world. We can find them on postcards and in gardens, on building facades and in DIY stores. They populate Internet forums, magazines and films and now the Höhenrausch 2016 in Linz.

THE THRILL OF HEIGHTS IN LINZ

The Höhenrausch rooftop exhibition in the Upper Austrian provincial capital is already entering its sixth season. Different Angels is the title of this year’s unique art show curated by Professor Thomas Macho, who invites us to: “Enter the fascinating world of the celestial beings, change your perspective and discover art while having fun and in an unusual place!”

In 38 art projects 60 artists have shone a light on the topic of angels in a surprising and profound way. “Angels are not just surreal and unreal, they are also ambiguous and contradictory, at any rate not easy to grasp. It’s interesting that the celestial beings are loaded with very different meanings depending on

the cultural background. They can be friendly and bring blessings, but can also be evil, as in the case of the fallen angels”, explains the cultural expert.

CHANGED ARTISTIC PERSPECTIVES

The exhibition first leads through a collection of everyday angels: adorable celestial beings as we know them from car ads, dapper garden figures or ethereal beings in esoteric magazines.

After this burst of reality, an elaborate path frees up our minds for new and entirely different angel images.

The still familiar and yet already surprising theme of biblical angels is extensively covered in the Ursuline Church. “Of course we are delighted that we were able to get the Catholic Church so enthusiastic about the topic. Our visitors are sure to be astonished at the unusual portrayal of the angels in a house of God,” the curator reveals. The next stop is the Wunderkammer in OK, where the working angels are to be found, and the roof of the voestalpine open space that turns itself into a space of mirrors. A botanical angel’s garden is even growing on the roof of the Raiffeisen art garage.

m Jahr 1997 kauft ARCOTEL Gründer Raimund Wimmer das Hotel im Donaupark. Seine Frau Dr. Renate Wimmer, eine gebürtige Linzerin, schlug ihm “Nike“ als Namen für das Hotel vor. Wimmer war vorerst nicht davon überzeugt: “Was soll denn Linz mit der Nike zu tun haben?“, wunderte er sich.

“Mehr, als du denkst!“, meinte seine Frau und erzählte ihm eine wahrhaft typisch österreichische Begebenheit: Als Emblem für die Stahlstadt Linz wurde 1977 auf dem Dach der Kunstuniversität Linz eine Nachbildung der antiken Marmorskulptur “Nike von Samothrake“ (180 v. Chr.) installiert. Der Körper der geflügelten Siegesgöttin ohne Kopf wurde von der international tätigen Künstler- und Architektengruppe HausRucker-Co aus Aluminium gefertigt. Die Aufstellung der acht Meter hohen, an einem Stahlgerüst frei schwebenden Metallplastik über dem Linzer Hauptplatz schlug hohe Wellen: War es nun ein “Fetzenvogel“ oder ein Signal dafür, dass sich in der kulturellen Provinz endlich etwas tut?

Das Für und Wider rund um die Nike spaltete Bevölkerung wie Politik und füllte die Tageszeitungen. Zu den Befürwortern der Nike zählten Künstlerpersönlichkeiten wie Christo, Joseph Beuys, Friederike Mayröcker und Ernst Jandl. Doch auch diese Unterstützung half nichts und nach 27 Monaten wurde die NIKE schließlich im November 1979 vom Dach der Kunstuniversität entfernt und an ein Museum nach Deutschland verkauft. Das

löste jedoch neuerlich hohe Emotionen bei der Linzer Bevölkerung aus, frei nach dem Motto “UNSERE Nike ist weg!“ Beeindruckt von dieser Geschichte, war nun Wimmers Absicht, den Linzern wieder eine Nike zu bieten, und so wurde das neue Hotel ARCOTEL Nike genannt. Und da der Versuch, die alte Original-Nike wieder “nach Hause“ zu holen, zum damaligen Zeitpunkt nicht gelang, gab Wimmer bei den Künstlern Gero Schwanberg und Harald Schreiber eine neue Nike-Skulptur in Auftrag, die seitdem das Haus schmückt.

n 1997 ARCOTEL founder Raimund Wimmer bought the hotel at the Donaupark. His wife, Dr. Renate Wimmer, who was born in Linz, suggested that they call the hotel “Nike”.

Wimmer was not immediately persuaded: “What on earth has Linz got to do with Nike?”, he asked himself. “More than you think!”, said his wife and told him about a typically Austrian incident.

In 1977 a replica of the antique marble sculpture “Nike of Samothrace“ (180 BC) was installed on the roof of the University of Art as an emblem of Linz as a steelmaking city. The headless body of the winged goddess was made out of aluminium by the internationally renowned Haus-Rucker-Co group of artists and architects. The installation of the eight-metre high metal sculpture suspended from a steel framework over the main square in Linz caused a sensation: Was it a “ragged scarecrow” or a message that “at last something is happening in the cultural backwater”?

The pros and cons of the Nike divided the population and politicians alike, and newspapers were inundated with letters on the subject. Supporters of the Nike included famous artists like Christo, Joseph Beuys, Friederike Mayröcker and Ernst Jandl. But even this support was in vain and after 27 months, the Nike was removed from the University of Art in 1979 and was subsequently sold to a museum in Germany. However, this triggered a new wave of emotion among the population of Linz who now protested, “OUR Nike is gone!”

Impressed by the story, Wimmer now decided to offer the people of Linz another Nike, and so the new hotel was named the ARCOTEL Nike.

And as an attempt to bring the old original Nike “back home” failed at the time, Wimmer commissioned the artists Gero Schwanberg and Harald Schreiber to create a new Nike sculpture, which has adorned the hotel ever since.

nter dem Motto “nah und fern“ setzt das Internationale Brucknerfest seine Reise in den Fernen Osten fort.

Mit dem Partnerland Südkorea besuchen 2016 wieder zahlreiche renommierte asiatische Künstler das Brucknerhaus Linz. In 36 Veranstaltungen von 13. September bis 15. Oktober treten nationale und internationale Stars auf. Das Programm bietet insgesamt fünf Opern, zwei Uraufführungen und drei Premieren. Die Spielstätten werden 2016 wieder um die Tabakfabrik Linz erweitert.

he International Bruckner Festival is continuing its journey to the Far East under the motto “near and far”. In 2016 a host of renowned artists from the festival’s partner country South Korea will again be visiting the Brucknerhaus in Linz. Between 13 September and 15 October, a string of Austrian and international stars will be performing at 36 events.

This year’s programme features five operas, two world premieres and three premieres. The venues in 2016 will also once more include the Tabakfabrik Linz.

Die Open Classic Night findet dieses Jahr am 17. September statt. Auch 2016 wird die “Klassische Klangwolke“ im Großen Saal des Brucknerhauses den Höhepunkt des Abends bilden.

Man darf Orchesterdarbietung in Reinkultur erwarten. Eine Woche davor, am 10. September, geht wieder die “Visualisierte Klangwolke“ im Linzer Donaupark über die Bühne – eine der größten und spektakulärsten Open-Air-Inszenierungen Europas im öffentlichen Raum. Eintritt frei!

The district of St. Pauli in Hamburg has far more to offer than just the Reeperbahn district, the harbour and pubs on every street corner. Relaxing beach bars invite you to chill during the day, while chic clubs and stylish bars are a real nightlife playground.

here’s nowhere better to enjoy a sun-drenched summer in Hamburg than in one of the beach bars. Just a short walk from the ARCOTEL Onyx, StrandPauli serves fabulous cocktails in the sand with a great view of the harbour.

The Hamburg del Mar and the Hamburg City Beach Club on the former car park down by the St. Pauli landing stages are great places to chill in summer. And later in the evening – when sandals are swapped for high heels – the dancefloor becomes the destination of choice as clubbers plunge into the hot rhythms of the night. If you think St. Pauli has nothing but cosy corner pubs and the usual amusements, then you’re wrong. There are dozens of clubs with something to suit everyone.

The best place to start is 20up, one of the swankiest locations in town on the 20th floor of the Empire Riverside Hotel. If you’re looking for an unusual atmosphere above the city rooftops, you’ll love the 20up.

Its seven-metre-high panorama windows offer spectacular views of the city, the harbour and the Elbe. What better place to enjoy champagne cocktails, exotic drinks and stimulating aperitifs.

The subterranean Mojo Club opens its hatches at the foot of the Tanzende Türme or “dancing towers” and the ARCOTEL Onyx. The epitome of chic, this dance club scores with a programme that includes everything from dancefloor jazz to soul and electronic music. A couple of metres down the road is THE in-location in St. Pauli: the Moondoo! The music belting out on the dance floors ranges from hip-hop and house to electro.

But R’n’B, dubstep, techno and soul also make a great soundtrack to a successful party.

Club hopping scenesters love the Klubhaus St. Pauli: The new building between the docks and the Schmidt Theater is home to several music clubs and bars. Most of the events at kukuun are live and include an eclectic mix of readings and improvised theatre, swing, electronic and metal concerts. The Häkken is a very popular late-night venue with international live acts from the worlds of pop, electro and urban providing a great party atmosphere. The Klubhaus is not hard to find: The huge video installations on the media facade are easily visible on the Reeperbahn even from a distance.

he Königstraße is a lively, popular boulevard with specialist retailers, department stores, international fashion chains, cafés, restaurants and seating areas. Running 1.2 kilometres from the railway station through the centre of the city it is the longest continuous pedestrian zone in Europe. And there are other tempting shopping boulevards nearby too. The Gerberviertel is home to trendy fashion and young designers, while the Bohnenviertel is the place to go if you want a colourful mix of art dealers and antique shops selling unique items. Collectors will love it and connoisseurs are sure to find something to take home.

It’s just a short hop from the Königstraße to the Marktplatz and here the man of style goes to Breuninger – the leading fashion and lifestyle company. The “Breuni”, with its cafés and a champagne bar, is THE meeting place in the Karlspassage if you want to look out for the latest exclusive fashion trends. Most of the merchandise is in the upper price range and includes world-class designer wear. Daniel Grau likes the third floor best because, “The Subway by Breuninger shop-in-shop has all the latest fashion streetwear, so it’s great if you like shopping for fashion. You can spend hours here and leave with plenty of plunder,” he raves. In the historic city centre between the Altes and the Neues Schloss and the market hall (worth a visit in its own right), the Grand Café Planie serves the best coffee in Stuttgart and a tasty selection of cakes from its own confectionary. “You simply have to try the poppy-seed cake with pear. I’ve been eating that here for ten years.”

EVERYTHING UNDER A SINGLE ROOF

Fans of big shopping centres have been spoiled for choice in Stuttgart since two new vast shopping malls, the Milaneo and the Gerber, opened in autumn 2014. At the Gerber between Tübinger Straße and Paulinenbrücke, Daniel Grau is especially impressed by the multi-brand retailer ELB with its mix of brands for those who like to experiment. If you prefer a hipster look you should pay a visit to Urban Outfitters – the US chain known for its edgy fashion, accessories and home furnishings.

The Milaneo, the region’s biggest shopping centre, is situated at the corner of Heilbronner Straße and Wolframstraße, and presents itself as an oversized shop window. And what about the coffee? “Before I get down to business in the Milaneo I always treat myself to a refreshing organic Frozen Fresh Berry at coffreez. As you can see, Daniel Grau is a modern man of style - and Stuttgart a city for relaxing shopping expeditions.

Wir kennen uns schon seit einigen Jahren, es hat sich einfach ergeben. Man kommt sich näher, spielt zusammen und im besten Fall kommt dabei ein ganzes Album heraus. Wir haben ähnliche Hobbies, wie die Geschichte des Austropop, das verbindet uns. Ich verstehe mich mit ihm sehr gut, er ist einer der angenehmsten Kollegen, die ich kenne. Ich gehe ihm auch nicht zu sehr auf die Nerven, glaube ich!

2015 kam euer erstes gemeinsames Album “Unser Österreich“ auf den Markt. Was ist das Besondere daran? Was kann man bei euren Konzerten erwarten?

Wir spielen unsere speziellen “Herzens-Songs“ auf unsere Art und Weise. Wir spielen sehr reduziert und ruhig, aber immer intensiv. Egal, ob unsere eigenen Lieder oder Austropop-Hits. Es freut uns natürlich, wenn die Mischung dem Publikum gefällt.

In den letzten Jahren hat sich in der Musiklandschaft einiges getan. So ist die Wiener Band “Wanda“ gerade sehr erfolgreich, und das auch in Deutschland. Warum ist Österreich in der Musikszene wieder so beliebt?

Vor wenigen Jahren haben die meisten noch Englisch gesungen, jetzt sind viele Texte deutsch. Vielleicht, weil es einfacher ist oder manche nicht so gut Englisch können. Für mich war immer klar, dass ich auf Deutsch singe. Und es freut mich, dass das so gut ankommt.

Stichwort Amadeus Music Award: Was sagst du zu diesem Musikpreis?

Erst im April 2016 habe ich meinen ersten Award gewonnen.

Ich habe mich schon gefreut, auch wenn es bedeutet hat, dass ich meinen Rekord gebrochen habe. Denn ich war zehnmal nominiert, ohne ihn gewonnen zu haben. So oft wie kein anderer – jetzt muss ich mir eine neue Herausforderung suchen.

Andererseits glaube ich nicht, dass der Award außerhalb der Musikszene von großer Bedeutung ist, ich würde das nicht überbewerten. Den Award habe ich meinen Eltern gegeben, die können damit vor ihren Freunden angeben. Sonderlich schön ist die Glasskulptur auch nicht, außer dass sie sich ganz gut als Aschenbecher eignet.

Why did you choose to play with Ernst Molden?

What is the connection between you?

We’ve known each other for several years now, it simply happened. You get to know someone, you perform together and in the best case scenario the result is a whole album*. We have similar hobbies, like the history of Austropop, that’s what we have in common. I get on really well with him; he is one of the nicest musicians I know. And I don’t think I get on his nerves too much either!

In 2015 you released your first joint album Unser Österreich.

What is so special about it? What can fans look forward to at your concerts?

We’ll be playing those songs that are especially close to our hearts in our own way. The way we play is very low-key and quiet but always very intensive. It makes no difference whether we’re playing our own songs or Austropop hits. Of course, we’re pleased if the audience likes the mix.

A lot has changed in recent years on the music scene. The Viennese band Wanda for example is currently enjoying a great deal of success, in Germany too. Why is Austria so popular again in the music world?

Up until a few years ago most people were still singing in English, now many of the lyrics are in German. Perhaps because it’s easier or because some people can’t speak English so well. But for me, it was always clear that I would sing in German. And I’m pleased that it is being so well received.

The Amadeus Music Award: What do you say about this music award?

It wasn’t until April 2016 that I won my first award. I was delighted, even though it meant I had broken my own record. I had been nominated for it ten times without ever having won.

That’s never happened to anyone else so often – now I’ll have to look for a new challenge. On the other hand, I don’t believe the award is that important outside the music world, so I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on it. I gave the award to my parents so they can show off to their friends with it. The glass sculpture is not particularly beautiful, apart from the fact it’s quite practical as an ashtray.

Juices made of carefully selected fruit and raw vegetables, green spinach and plenty of water play a particularly important role, and then of course there is a training plan as well. “I have been running fitness courses for small groups and individuals for many years. Each client receives a personalised programme of exercise and dietary advice,” explains Mario Valentić.

As the exclusive partner of the ARCOTEL Allegra, the fitness coach now helps guests at the hotel who want to balance body, mind and soul. The motto is “all in one” and is a huge plus for guests who value a healthy lifestyle. The hotel director Ljiljana Mikic herself follows a healthy diet and makes sure she does plenty of sport. In her opinion, a scaled-down version of this programme is also suitable for seminar guests. “We all know what it’s like. At lectures, seminars or workshops you spend the whole day sitting in the seminar room, there are sandwiches during the breaks and in the evening a big dinner. Detox diets in particular should never be undertaken without professional support.

Zutaten: 2 Orangen, 2 Äpfel, 1 Banane, eine Handvoll Baby-Spinat, 2 Scheiben frische Ananas, 1 TL frisch geriebener Ingwer, ½ gepresste Zitrone oder Limette, Kurkuma (falls gewünscht) und 1 bis 1,5 Liter Wasser Zubereitung: Früchte und Spinat waschen, in Stücke schneiden und in einem Mixer mit Wasser verrühren. Mit oder ohne Eis servieren.

Ingredients: 2 oranges, 2 apples, 1 banana, a handful of baby spinach, 2 slices of fresh pineapple, 1 teaspoon of freshly grated ginger, ½ pressed lemon or lime, curcuma (optional) and 1 to 1.5 litres of water.

Preparation: Wash the fruit and spinach, cut into pieces and blend with the water in a mixer. Serve with or without ice.

AUSTRALIEN = BARBIE Grillen hat in Down Under hohen Stellenwert, gegrillt wird faktisch immer und überall. Heißt es “Let’s have a barbie!‘, treffen sich Freunde im Park (dort gibts öffentliche Grills mit Geldeinwurf!) oder die Familie im Backyard ihres Hauses.

Auf dem Rost landen Fisch oder Meeresfrüchte – bevorzugt King Prawns –, saftige Rindersteaks oder zarte Lammchops vom Weidevieh. Die „Aussies“ grillen auch gern auf mächtigen Gasgeräten, allerdings ohne das nach US-Art aufwendig zu zelebrieren: mit viel Vorbereitung und stundenlangem Wachestehen vor dem Grillgut. Genuss pur heißt die Devise, ohne großen Aufwand, abgerundet durch bunte Salate und Kartoffeln in allen erdenklichen Variationen.

EUROPA = MIX Österreich, Deutschland, Kroatien, egal welches Land: In Europa grillt und smoked man im Sommer regelrecht um die Wette. Traditionell kommen Rind, Schwein, Lamm, Huhn oder Würste auf den Rost.

Getoppt von zeitgemäßen Zubereitungen wie zarten Burgerpatties in raffiniertem Umfeld oder galaktischen Hot-Dog-Kombinationen. USA = BBQ Wenn es um Barbecue geht, denkt man zuallererst an Amerika.

Für die Pioniere dieser Zubereitungsart ist sie eine Kunstform, jede “Smoker-Session“ wird im Land der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten zum Ritual. Nirgendwo auf der Welt gibt es eine strengere, vielfältigere, verrücktere BBQ-Kultur als in den USA. Mit bierernster Miene und in beinahe verschwörerischer Manier werden unter der Hand geheime Rezepturen ausgetauscht. Ob ganze Rinderrücken in selbst gebauten Science-Fiction-Smokers oder Burger und Hot Dogs in allen erdenklichen Kompositionen: Auf jeden Fall gibt es 1001 Dips für jeden Anlass und zu allem Ketchup.

Apropos vegan: Wer es genau wissen will und dabei ganz ohne tierische Produkte auskommen möchte, hat im ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser die Gelegenheit, von Küchenchef Johann Schwarz aus erster Hand zu lernen. Sie lehnen sich lieber zurück und genießen Gegrilltes, ob mit Fleisch oder ohne? Von Juni bis August stehen in den ARCOTEL Hotels Grillabende auf dem Programm. Im ARCOTEL Nike lautet das Motto “Grill & Chill“. Küchenchef Andreas Breitenfellner setzt seinen Griller auf der weitläufigen Terrasse mit direktem Donaublick in Gang und zeigt, wie hausgemachte Würstel, feine Tafelspitzsteaks und würzige Hühnerfilets zart und frisch zubereitet werden. Dazu gibt es verschiedene Gemüse mit Kartoffeln, Käse, Soßen, Salate und vieles mehr.

Straßenküchen und Nachtmärkte sind in Asien Fixpunkte des kulinarischen Programms. Dort wird auf Teufel komm raus gegrillt! Und weil Asiaten eher auf Wok-Tempo statt auf Slow-Cooking setzen, sind sie im Grunde die Erfinder des gegrillten Fingerfoods am Stiel. Indonesien hat seine Saté-Spieße und Japan die Yakitori-Spieße. In Vietnam wird Schweinehack mit klein gehackten Garnelen gemischt, um Zuckerrohr gewickelt und über die Glut gelegt. Chinesen machen das Grillen schon zu einer größeren Sache: Das berühmteste Beispiel ist die Pekingente, die in den Chinatowns des Westens auch als “BBQ Duck“ angeboten wird.

Wichtig ist für ihn, dass alle Lebensmittel aus der Region stammen. “Ich vertraue unseren Lieferanten, alle Produkte zeichnen sich durch erstklassige Qualität aus. Mein Küchenteam und ich möchten unseren Gästen nur beste Ware bieten.

Ich bin sehr froh, dass uns das auch gelingt!“ Am Schluss gibt er noch einen Tipp: “Ob Roastbeef, Steak oder Filet, wichtig ist, dass die Fleischstücke nicht zu dünn geschnitten werden, dann bleiben sie zart und saftig. Rindfleisch darf im Gegensatz zum Schweinefleisch nicht ganz durchgebraten werden. Das Fleisch ist dann medium, wenn es auf Fingerdruck nur wenig nachgibt!“

USA = BBQ Whenever barbecues come up, America is the first place that springs to mind. For the pioneers of this style of cooking, it’s an art form: in the land of limitless opportunity, each ”smoker session” becomes a ritual. Nowhere in the world is there a more exacting, more diverse or more crazy BBQ culture than in the USA. With deadly serious expressions and an almost conspiratorial manner, secret recipes are covertly exchanged.

Whether you’re talking whole T-bone steaks in home-made science fiction smokers, or burgers and hot dogs in every imaginable savoury variation – there are always 1001 dips for every occasion and ketchup with everything.

ASIA = GRILL In Asia, street kitchens and night markets are permanent fixtures in the culinary landscape. Yes, over there they barbecue all night – come hell or high water! And as Asians tend to prefer wok tempo to slow cooking, they basically invented barbecued finger foods on a stick. Indonesia has its Saté skewers and Japan has its Yakitori barbecue spits. In Vietnam, ground pork is mixed with fine-chopped prawns, wrapped round a sugar cane and laid on glowing embers. The Chinese make barbecuing an ever bigger event: the most famous example is Peking Duck, offered as ”BBQ Duck” in the Chinatowns of the West too.

AUSTRALIA = BARBIE Huge value is placed on barbecueing Down Under – in fact, barbecues are held there all the time, everywhere. “Let’s have a barbie!“ is the familiar refrain when meeting friends in the park (there are public barbecue areas with coin slots!) or together with the family in the back yards of their homes. The grill is heaped with fish or seafood – preferably King Prawns, juicy beef steaks or tender, pasture-fed lamb chops. Aussies also love barbecuing on massive gas grills – only without the elaborate American style of celebrating with lots of preparation work and hours of standing over a charcoal grill. Pure enjoyment is the motto here, without making too much fuss, and each fiery feast is rounded off with colourful salads and potatoes cooked in every conceivable style.

EUROPE = MIX In Austria, Germany, Croatia and no matter which country: in Europe, people barbecue and smoke eatables all summer long as if their lives depend on it. Traditionally, beef, pork, lamb, chicken and sausages sizzle on the grill, topped with modern treats such as tender burger patties in more refined circles, or galactic hot dog combinations. Not only that – over the past few years, a regular cult has grown up around the open fire.

Time and again, new ideas are tried out and combined – from vegetable aperitifs to imaginative desserts. And vegetarians and vegans have been bitten by the barbecue bug too!

Speaking of veganism – anyone who’d like to know exactly what it’s about and to live completely free of animal products has the opportunity of learning about it first-hand from head chef Johann Schwarz at the ARCOTEL Kaiserwasser. In his course on vegan barbecuing, he reveals tips and tricks, while everyone joins in the chopping, seasoning und marinating – as well as of course tucking into the delicious result as well!

Would you rather lie back and just enjoy a barbecue, whether with or without meat? From June to August, barbecue evenings are on the programme at the ARCOTEL hotels. At ARCOTEL Nike, the motto is ”Grill & Chill”. Kontakt und lernte, was es heißt, gastronomisch zu denken.

Kurz bevor ich mein Architekturstudium abgeschlossen hätte, kehrte ich wieder zu meinen gastronomischen Wurzeln zurück.

Wo siehst du die VELVET Bar in der Zukunft?

Welche Pläne hast du?

Wichtig ist mir, dem ständigen Pop-Up ein Ende zu setzen, dafür aber Kontinuität einzubringen. Die Wurzeln der Bar und des Hotels sollen wieder stärker in den Fokus gerückt werden.

Unsere Vision lautet: In einer gemütlichen Lounge mit samtweichen Elementen sollen sich Hausgäste und Kiezbewohner die Hand geben und gemeinsam den besten japanischen Whisky der Welt trinken. Ich lege Wert darauf, die Idee von unserem ehemaligen Barchef weiterzuführen, Barbesuchern einen Zugang zu ausgewählten Produkten aus kleineren Destillerien zu verschaffen.

Lass uns ein bisschen über die Kernwerte des Hotels philosophieren! Wie stehst du dazu?

Meine Vorstellung ist eine solide und gut designte Bar als Basis, mit der die Authentizität des Hauses gewahrt bleibt.

Darüber hinaus soll auch die Symbiose von Hotel, Bar und Kiez erhalten bleiben. Das gelingt natürlich nur mit einem Konzept, das kontinuierlich umgesetzt wird. Es muss in die Umgebung des Hotels und der Nachbarschaft passen und sich nachhaltig etablieren. Wir sind hier mit dem ARCOTEL direkt in Berlin Mitte, in prominenter Nachbarschaft. Ich will keinen “Soho-Effekt“, einen von Künstlern und Kreativen in Gang gesetzten Prozess der Gentrifizierung, der letzlich zur Verdrängung der Kiezbewohner führen könnte.

Lukas, what kind of a career have you had so far?

Tell us something about it please!

I grew up in Berlin in my parent’s restaurant. So of course, I came into contact with food very early on and learned what it means to think in culinary terms. Shortly before finishing my architecture degree, I went back to my roots in the catering industry. At first I was the bar manager at the Bruder Grimm, an in-bar on Boxhagener Platz, followed by two years as night manager at the Club der Visionaere, a crowd-puller in BerlinKreuzberg.

And now you’re working in a hotel bar for the first time.

How did that come about?

I got to know pop-up concepts through Roger Breitenegger, who managed temporary bar projects with a number of partners. It was he who inspired me to move to a new branch. In particular, it was the creative challenge that appealed to me. You always have to invent something new and different, the drinks, the interior, the atmosphere, and of course, your own idea about how to put your personal stamp on the whole thing. So in 2015 we implemented a variety of concepts at the VELVET Bar, including for example the Tu Salud.

Where do you see the VELVET Bar in the future?

What plans do you have?

It’s important to me to put an end to the constant pop-ups, and at the same time to bring in some continuity. I want to shift the focus back to the roots of the bar and the hotel. Our vision is that hotel guests and people from the neighbourhood should be able to sit down together in a comfortable lounge with velvetysmooth elements and drink the best Japanese whisky in the world with one another. It’s important to me that we keep the idea brought in by the previous manager of giving visitors to the bar access to selected products from smaller distilleries.

Let’s talk about the hotel’s core values!

How do you feel about them?

My vision is a solid and well-designed bar which preserves the authenticity of the hotel. Furthermore, the symbiosis of hotel, bar and neighbourhood should be retained. Of course, that can only be done with a concept that is consistently implemented. It has to fit in with the hotel’s surroundings and with the neighbourhood and has to establish itself in the long term. At the ARCOTEL we’re right in the middle of the Berlin Mitte district, in a prominent neighbourhood. I don’t want a Soho effect, where artists and the creative professions move in and start a gentrification process, which in the end could result in the original residents being pushed out.

JUNGE TALENTE AUF DEN CHEFSESSEL PREPARING YOUNG TALENTS FOR MANAGEMENT POSITIONS Bereits zum 14. Mal wurde im April 2016 der YOUNG HOTELIER AWARD verliehen, eine Auszeichnung der Wiener Spitzenhotellerie. Auch ARCOTEL Hotels schickten mit Sebastian Tiefenbacher einen Kandidaten ins Rennen.

ie heißt es so schön? Ohne Fleiß kein Preis! Und so mussten sich die Teilnehmer in einem herausfordernden, prestigeträchtigen Bewerb messen, an dem die Wiener ARCOTEL Hotels erstmals teilgenommen haben.

Mit Sebastian Tiefenbacher (24), Junior Sales Partner, war ein vielversprechendes Sales-Talent am Start.

Wie fühlt man sich als Teilnehmer des YOUNG HOTELIER AWARD? Ganz ehrlich: Zuerst war es gar nicht so etwas Besonderes.

Aber als wir beim ersten Vortrag zu hören bekamen, dass wir zu den Besten der Besten in der Wiener Hotellerie gehören, war ich schon sehr stolz! Und es stimmt: Ich konnte tolle Kollegen kennenlernen und extrem viele neue Erfahrungen machen.

In April 2016 the YOUNG HOTELIER AWARD organised by the General Management Council of luxury Viennese hotels was held for the 14th time.

This year, ARCOTEL Hotels also entered a candidate, namely Sebastian Tiefenbacher.

H

ow does the saying go? No pain, no gain! And so participants were pitted against one another in a prestigious and challenging competition in which the Viennese ARCOTEL Hotels were also taking part for the first time.

Sebastian Tiefenbacher (24), a Junior Sales Partner, was one of the promising sales talents in the competition.

What does it feel like to take part in the YOUNG HOTELIER AWARD? Honestly: In the beginning it wasn’t really anything special.

But when we were told during the first lecture that we are among the crème de la crème of the Viennese hotel industry, I must admit I was very proud! And it’s true: I got to know some fantastic colleagues and gained some extremely valuable experience.

Wie lange hat der Bewerb gedauert und was wurde verlangt?

Insgesamt hat die Vorbereitung sechs Monate in Anspruch genommen, eine sehr intensive Zeit. Wir mussten eine Präsentation zu zwei aktuellen Themen ausarbeiten und diese auf Englisch einem Expertenkomitee vorstellen. Ich habe mich mit dem Thema “Airbnb & Co“ beschäftigt. Ich habe sehr viel recherchiert und mir Gedanken darüber gemacht, wie ich das Thema authentisch verkaufen kann. Genau mein Gebiet eigentlich!

How long did the competition last and what was required?

All in all, the preparations took six months, a very intensive period. We had to prepare a presentation on two current topics and then deliver them in English to an expert jury. I tackled the issue of Airbnb and other companies like it. I did a lot of research and thought about how I could sell the topic authentically. It was just my field actually!

Was hat dir an dem Bewerb am meisten gefallen?

Die Möglichkeit des Netzwerkens und das Austauschen von Informationen mit Kollegen hat mir sehr gefallen. Es war auch sehr schön, dass uns die Größen der Hotellerie anerkannt und mit Respekt behandelt haben.

What did you like best about the competition?

I very much appreciated the opportunity to network and share information with my counterparts. It was also very nice that the leading lights of the hotel industry accepted us and treated us with respect.

Warum hast du dich für eine Ausbildung in der Hotellerie entschieden?

Das liegt mir einfach im Blut! Ich bin gern unter Menschen und meine offene Art kommt auch gut an. Damit kann man in der Hotellerie gute Kontakte knüpfen, da kennt ja jeder jeden.

Dadurch, dass durch Reden die Leute zusammenkommen, habe ich mich hier immer sehr wohl gefühlt. Es kann zwar auch stressig werden, aber das gehört einfach dazu.

Why did you choose to work in the hotel industry?

It’s in my blood! I love being with people and they appreciate my open nature. This makes it easy to make good contacts in the hotel industry, because everyone knows everyone else. As talking brings people together, I always felt very much at home here. Although there can be a lot of stress sometimes, that just comes with the territory.
