2008 YEARS OF SACRED CULTURE

2008 YEARS OF SACRED CULTURE Since the foundation of the Society of Jesus in 1540, its members – the Jesuits – have collected artefacts, both sacred and secular, to support their missionary, educational and cultural work. In the case of the English and Welsh Jesuits, many of these precious objects remained hidden from the reign of Elizabeth I until 1829, a period when Catholics were prevented from practising their religion openly. The exhibition, Held in Trust: 2008 Years of Sacred Culture, provides a fascinating glimpse of the rich range of artefacts held today at Stonyhurst College, Lancashire, and by the trustees of the British Province of the Society of Jesus. It aims to make them known to a wide public, and to show how they form part of our common national, European and world heritage, in the context of Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture, 2008.
