A Long Tradition of Welcoming Forces Families

Set within a magnificent Grade I listed building in the heart of Lancashire’s beautiful Ribble Valley, Stonyhurst offers an inspiring and secure environment in which young people can thrive.

“

For more than 100 years, Stonyhurst has proudly welcomed Forces families from all Services, ranks and religious backgrounds. Here, every child is known and valued as an individual, encouraged to become the very best version of themselves and to grow into ‘men and women for others. William Doherty Head of Stonyhurst

“

Stonyhurst College, together with its Prep School, Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall, is the UK’s leading co-educational Catholic boarding and day school for children aged 3–18, with boarding available from 7 years of age.

A Family Like No Other

We recognise that service life can sometimes disrupt educational continuity and that a stable, supportive environment provides children with the opportunity to realise their full potential. At the heart of this is ensuring that every child knows they genuinely matter. Each is a valued member of our boarding community and the wider Stonyhurst family – known, loved and supported as an individual. Within this caring and diverse community, pupils are encouraged to grow in confidence, character, resilience and compassion. This formation and personal growth prepares them not only for life beyond Stonyhurst, but to become men and women for others.

“

Our daughter had already been to five different primary schools before we found Stonyhurst. So when we received notice of another posting, we did not have the same worries we had faced before. Stonyhurst gave her the stability and continuity she needed. She settled into boarding quickly, built lasting friendships and continued to thrive both academically and personally. For the first time, another posting did not mean starting all over again. A Stonyhurst Forces Parent

At Stonyhurst, we understand what it means to be part of a Forces family – for both children and parents.

Boarding is a vibrant, diverse and inclusive community where pupils learn the value of living together in harmony. Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) Inspection Report 2026

“

My husband’s deployment was the first our son was old enough to really remember, and naturally it brought with it a lot of anxiety. Knowing he was boarding at Stonyhurst gave us real peace of mind. He was surrounded by caring staff, a supportive boarding community and always had someone to turn to. That support made a difficult time much easier for our whole family.

Men and Women for Others

“

Pupils connect meaningfully with society through social projects and demonstrate a deep sense of social responsibility and service to others.

“

Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) Inspection Report 2026

Stonyhurst’s Jesuit principles form the foundation of our mission to develop each pupil’s unique talents, encouraging them to strive for excellence in all that they do. We aim to form “men and women for others” - individuals who value community, understand what they stand for, and have the confidence to speak up for what they believe in. The phrase “men and women for others” was first used by Fr Pedro Arrupe, Superior General of the Society of Jesus from 1965 to 1983. He believed that a Jesuit education should be about far more than academic achievement; it should guide young people to use their gifts and talents in service of others. That philosophy continues to shape life at Stonyhurst today through a wide range of activities and experiences that encourage empathy, leadership and a commitment to addressing the challenges of the modern world.

Stonyhurst is fully committed to a fee structure that provides maximum support for Forces families. We currently educate more than 40 pupils from HM Forces and the FCDO, representing all ranks and Services across both our Prep and Senior Schools. Stonyhurst maintains a fee policy that sets parental contribution at 10% of the relevant Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA), fully incorporating the VAT element and lunch. To further support Forces families, we waive the standard deposit requirement and offer a reduced registration fee of just £10.

Our Forces Families package is designed to be transparent and comprehensive, with many additional elements included within the fees. Fees at Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall and Aloysius House include a comprehensive weekend activities programme. Optional charges apply only to selected co-curricular activities. At Stonyhurst College some co-curricular and weekend activities are offered as optional extras and may incur a small additional charge. Standard SEND support and technology are also included, with pupils benefiting from tailored learning support, access to digital resources, and a school laptop provided for every child from Lower Elements (Year 5). To ensure forces children are fully supported throughout their educational journey, we also employ a dedicated Forces Families Liaison Officer, providing guidance and continuity for both pupils and parents. Scholarships are available to forces families but as pathway only.

THE PRAYER OF GENEROSITY ST IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA Lord, teach me to be generous, to serve you as you deserve, to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest,

EST. 1593 to labor and not to look for any reward, save that of knowing that I do your holy will.
