5.0 Proposal 5.2: Layout

The pedestrian entrance to the Hotel is proposed in the space between the George Hotel and 1 Market Place. A new gate is proposed to create an intermediate threshold before entering the Hotel Reception. The entrance is playfully inspired by the town’s medieval history, setting the scene for the Hotel experience.

The new development will be accessed via the established route between The George Hotel and No. 1 Market Place. This approach retains the historic pattern of movement through the site, minimising intervention to the existing urban grain while providing a clear and legible point of arrival for visitors. The route is intended to offer a gradual transition from the public realm into the more intimate internal spaces of the hotel, enhancing the sense of arrival and

Whilst the ground floor of the George is predominantly a public bar and guest facilities, there will be one accessible bedroom available. Hotel accommodation in 1 Market Place can be accessed past the reception desk.

orientation. A new double height Restaurant space, (labelled 2), is designed to accommodate both hotel guests and nonresident visitors. It is intended to function as a vibrant and welcoming environment, capable of supporting a range of uses throughout the day, from informal dining to more formal occasions. The scale, materiality, and spatial quality of the Restaurant draw inspiration from traditional hall structures, providing a sense of generosity and permanence.

5.0 Proposal 5.2: Layout Complementing this, a Glazed Courtyard, (labelled 1), offers a more relaxed and informal setting for guests. Enclosed by a glass roof, it provides a sheltered environment that can be used throughout the year, benefiting from natural light and a strong visual connection to the surrounding architecture. The space is intended to support a variety of uses, including informal seating, waiting, and social interaction, enhancing the overall amenity of the hotel. The Glazed Courtyard also serves as the central organising element of the development, acting as a key point of orientation and movement within the site. It links the entrance and reception areas with the Restaurant creating a clear and efficient circulation

strategy. The transparency of the Glazed Courtyard establishes both visual and physical connections across the scheme, reinforcing a sense of cohesion and continuity between the existing hotel and the new interventions. an architectural interface between the new-build elements and the existing historic fabric of The George Hotel. The design of the Gallery has been developed to respect the character and significance of the listed building, providing a subtle connection that allows the old and new to be clearly understood while functioning as a cohesive whole. In addition to its functional role, the Gallery establishes a strong visual relationship with the Glazed Courtyard below, allowing guests a constant awareness of this central communal space. From the Gallery, direct access is provided to existing hotel rooms within The George Hotel, as well as forming a seamless connection to the Garden Hotel Accommodation. In this way, the Gallery ensures that both existing and new areas operate as a single, coherent hotel environment. The Gallery is enclosed by a continuous glazed roof light, which introduces generous levels of natural daylight while maintaining a sense of openness and transparency. The use of glazing as a primary material creates a deliberately lightweight architectural expression, minimising the visual impact of the intervention and allowing the historic masonry of the surrounding buildings to remain the dominant feature. This approach ensures that the addition is both reversible in character and clearly subordinate to the listed structures.
