AMERICAN ELECTRIC POWER (AEP)

Stonewall Columbus is grateful for the ongoing support of American Electric Power (AEP). AEP has been a strong ally and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, both within the company and in the broader community. Their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion has helped to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment. AEP's generosity and support have been instrumental in advancing the mission of Stonewall Columbus and promoting equality and acceptance for all.

POWERING FORWARD

Embracing brighter futures, together.

A LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY

FIFTY YEARS AGO, THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY IN NEW YORK'S GREENWICH VILLAGE SPARKED A PIVOTAL MOMENT IN HISTORY. THE STONEWALL UPRISING WAS BORN OUT OF A REFUSAL TO SURRENDER TO YET ANOTHER POLICE RAID ON THE STONEWALL INN. IN THAT ACT OF REBELLION AGAINST A SYSTEM THAT DENIED THEIR EXISTENCE, THEY IGNITED THE MODERN MOVEMENT FOR LGBTQ+ RIGHTS.

THE 1969 STONEWALL UPRISINGS WERE NOT JUST PROTESTS AGAINST POLICE BRUTALITY; THEY REPRESENTED THE COLLECTIVE FRUSTRATION OF A COMMUNITY SUBJECTED TO INJUSTICE. THIS YEAR, AS WE GATHER TO FOR THE STONEWALL COLUMBUS 2023 PRIDE FESTIVAL AND MARCH, OUR THEME RESONATES: “PURPOSE. PASSION. POWER.”

PURPOSE REMINDS US THAT LGBTQ+ PRIDE IS NOT JUST A PERSONAL JOURNEY; IT IS PART OF AMERICAN HISTORY. WHILE LGBTQ+ HISTORY HAS OFTEN BEEN OVERLOOKED, WE MUST WORK TO SHARE THE STORIES OF THOSE WHO HAVE SHAPED OUR NATION'S NARRATIVE. THE STONEWALL UPRISING ITSELF IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF AMERICAN HISTORY—A PROTEST AGAINST POLICE BRUTALITY AND AN OUTCRY AGAINST THE INJUSTICES FACED BY THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY.

PASSION DRIVES US TO CREATE A MORE INCLUSIVE PRIDE. WE RECOGNIZE THAT OUR CELEBRATION OF PRIDE HAS NOT ALWAYS BEEN INCLUSIVE OF ALL MARGINALIZED INTERSECTIONAL IDENTITIES. AS WE CONTINUE TO EVOLVE AND FIGHT FOR EQUITY AND LIBERATION, WE STRIVE TO UPLIFT EVERY INDIVIDUAL WITHIN OUR DIVERSE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY. OUR PASSION LIES IN EMBRACING AND EMPOWERING ALL THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN HISTORICALLY MARGINALIZED.

POWER IS OUR COLLECTIVE STRENGTH. THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY ENCOMPASSES A TAPESTRY OF IDENTITIES—RACE, COLOR, RELIGION, GENDER, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, GENDER IDENTITY, GENDER EXPRESSION, AGE, ANCESTRY, NATIONAL ORIGIN, AND DIFFERENT ABILITIES. OVER THE PAST FIFTY-FOUR YEARS, WE HAVE OVERCOME IMMENSE CHALLENGES, FROM FIGHTING SODOMY LAWS TO BATTLING THE HIV/AIDS EPIDEMIC, CHALLENGING DISCRIMINATORY MARRIAGE LAWS, AND ADVOCATING FOR PROTECTIONS UNDER TITLE VII. IN THE FACE OF BIGOTRY, OUR PERSISTENCE ENDURES AND EMPOWERS US.

WE MUST NOT FORGET THAT DISCRIMINATION STILL EXISTS IN OUR STATE. LGBTQ+ INDIVIDUALS CAN BE DENIED HOUSING, EMPLOYMENT, AND BASIC RIGHTS SOLELY BECAUSE OF THEIR SEXUAL ORIENTATION OR GENDER IDENTITY. THIS FUELS OUR DETERMINATION TO MAKE OUR VOICES HEARD AND STAND ALONGSIDE OUR BIPOC AND TRANSGENDER COMMUNITY MEMBERS. WE STAND UNITED IN DEMANDING INCLUSION, FULL ENFRANCHISEMENT, AND EQUALITY BEFORE THE LAW.

AS WE GATHER, LET US HONOR THOSE WHO HAVE FOUGHT FOR OUR RIGHTS AND CONTINUE TO FIGHT FOR A MORE JUST AND EQUAL SOCIETY— FOR THOSE FIGHTING FOR OUR LIBERATION. TOGETHER, WE CELEBRATE THE PROGRESS WE HAVE MADE AND RECOGNIZE THE WORK THAT LIES AHEAD. WE CREATE SAFER SPACES FOR ALL WHO WILL FOLLOW, LIVING AUTHENTICALLY AND UNAPOLOGETICALLY. IN OUR DIVERSITY, WE FIND STRENGTH, AND IN THIS MOMENT, WE RAISE OUR VOICES AND PROUDLY DECLARE PRIDE IS OUR PURPOSE, PASSION, AND POWER!

HAPPY PRIDE!

2023 HONOREES

STONEWALL COLUMBUS’ 2023

LINDA SCHULER SERVICE AWARD MARK MILLER

Dedicated on the occasion of her 75th birthday, May 25, 2021, the Linda Schuler Service Award was created in honor of Linda Schuler in recognition and celebration of her many years of service to Stonewall Columbus and the local Columbus LGBTQ+ community. For years Linda committed herself to ensuring there is a place for our community’s trailblazers by facilitating our Trailblazers program and served tirelessly as the Pride March Chair bringing to march to it’s well over 10,000 participants. In 2021 the Stonewall Board of Trustees was honored to recognize Linda Schuler as the inaugural recipient of the Linda Schuler Service award. An award created to recognize a trailblazing longtime volunteer who selflessly promotes acceptance and community.

For many years Mark has dedicated himself to the LGBTQ+ community here in Columbus and across the region through his engagement with Stonewall Columbus. As a volunteer, member, and donor - with a wonderful gift that helped support the new Stonewall building. Prior to her passing Mark worked closely with Linda Schuler to help steward the Stonewall Trailblazer program to what it is today.

STONEWALL COLUMBUS’ 2023 LEADERS OF PRIDE

GLORIA MCCAULEY • LINDA SCHULER WAHRU CLEVELAND • SHERI TURNER

The Stonewall Columbus Leader(s) of Pride recognizes an individual, or individuals, who use their voice(s) to speak up and out - boldly and loudly in support of members of the LGBTQ+ community in Columbus, Ohio and beyond.

Nominees must have somehow inspired some form of collective action in or around the Central Ohio LGBTQ+ community.

Part of the power of our fight is its history. In 2022 the Columbus community, and our fight, lost some great warriors, creators of history, and this year we are honored to recognize Gloria McCauley, Sharon (Sheri) A. Turner, Linda Schuler, B. “Wahru” Cleveland and a generation of LGBTQ+ elders who laid the foundation for us to be emboldened to dream bigger dreams than they could have ever imagined as our Leaders of Pride for 2023.

PATRON OF PRIDE

STONEWALL COLUMBUS’ 2023 PATRON OF PRIDE CALEB MIKAYLA GOINS-ROBINSON

A.K.A MIKAYLA DENISE

The Stonewall Columbus Patron of Pride recognizes an individual who ensures the community is not only present but seen and does so by simply living their truth—out loud and proud.

Caleb Mikalyla was part of The Trans Visibility Project that was recognized as Stonewall’s 2022 Leaders of Pride. In the winter of 2022 Goins Robinson was part of a group that was protested because they simply aimed to read stories to children at a community church. And while it may seem that in 2022 Caleb Mikayla was being noticed for simply being who they are - they’ve been being Caleb Mikayla and making an impact in the community well before 2022.

An advocate in the LGBTQ+ health equity space, a community educator, and a drag entertainer. Caleb Mikayla Goins Robinson is a recognized, and awarded, drag pageant queen—in and out of state.

Caleb feels that telling the story of their experience living with HIV is the best way to effect change when it comes to both public awareness and local, state and national legislation.

In 2018, they helped establish Ohio’s first community center for young LGBT people of color.

STONEWALL COLUMBUS WAS FOUNDED IN 1981 WITH THE GOAL OF “INCREASING THE VISIBILITY AND ACCEPTANCE OF THE GAY, LESBIAN, BISEXUAL, AND TRANSGENDER (GLBT) COMMUNITY.” DURING STONEWALL’S 40-YEAR EXISTENCE, COLUMBUS, AND THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY HAS CHANGED. STONEWALL IS PROUD TO HAVE 500+ VOLUNTEERS AND PARTNER WITH NUMEROUS LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS. IN ADDITION TO PROGRAMS LIKE THE TRAILBLAZERS AND PRIDE OUR STRATEGY WILL ALWAYS BE TO WORK CLOSELY WITH EXISTING COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO IDENTIFY GAPS IN SERVICES THAT WE CAN FILL AND CREATE TIMELY INITIATIVES WHERE STONEWALL’S COMMUNITY-WIDE REACH BRINGS ADDED VALUE.
