ON SEPTEMBER 28, THE STONE RIDGE COMMUNITY LINED THE CAMPUS ROADS TO BID A FOND FAREWELL TO SR. PAT GEUTING AND SR. KAREN OLSON WITH A TRADITIONAL SACRED HEART RITUAL—THE “WHITE HANKIE FAREWELL.” Sr. Olson moved to Albany, NY, to the Religious of the Sacred Heart convent attached to the Teresian House, an assisted-living facility run by the Carmelites. Sr. Geuting moved to a Religious of the Sacred Heart-shared home near Catholic University. She will remain a member of the Board of Trustees.

St. Madeleine Sophie said, “Be faithful to the touch of the Holy Spirit upon your soul. The Spirit, when free, works marvels within us.” As we wish a fond thank you to these wonderful RSCJ, may we continue to pray for all of our religious and be attentive to the touch of the Holy Spirit upon our souls.

Crossing New Frontiers.

Dear SR Community: In November, Stone Ridge joined together with the International Society of the Sacred Heart to begin the year-long bicentennial celebration of Philippine Duchesne’s coming to the Americas. The theme for this celebration is “Crossing New Frontiers.”

It is hard to imagine what it was like to be Rose Philippine crossing the frontiers that she navigated. Having joined her friend Madeleine Sophie Barat in ministry just four years after the founding of the order, she was certainly not a stranger to risk-taking and what we would call a “start-up” culture. Yet it was a true act of bravery to raise her hand in 1817 when Bishop DuBourg of Louisiana arrived in France in search of help from other religious who could assist with his large territory in the United States.

Passionate about the Sacred Heart vision of “making known the heart of Christ through the vehicle of education,” Philippine had long wanted to bring her ministry to the New World. In 1818, she set sail from Bordeaux on the Rebecca, on March 21, with four other Religious of the Sacred Heart. When she set foot on the Rebecca, she knew she was leaving behind all that she knew—all that was familiar—knowing full well that she might never return. They packed limited equipment, but were armed with a bounty of faith and zeal for the mission.

Their passage was not an easy one, and they landed two months later near New Orleans. After a six-week stay with the Ursulines there, Philippine led her group up the Mississippi River on the steamship Franklin. Bishop DuBourg sent them to the small village of St. Charles, Missouri, where on September 8, 1818, these determined women opened the first Sacred Heart school outside Europe. The Academy of the Sacred Heart was the Fall/Winter 2017 | 4

first free school west of the Mississippi and the first Catholic school in what would become the St. Louis Archdiocese.

They faced a multitude of daily challenges— from finding students, to poor weather, to cultural differences. Among the many things that fascinate me about Philippine, I am always interested in hearing about her work with fundraising and resource development. Finding resources to make our Sacred Heart Schools the absolute best they can be has always been one of the top priorities of the Headmistress (or Head of School). Since this edition of the Stone Ridge Magazine includes our 2016-2017 Annual Report and updates on fundraising, the topic of her work with philanthropy is especially relevant.

There are numerous letters from Philippine that show evidence of her work as a fundraiser. Many of these references are captured in letters to her cousin in France, Josephine de Rollin, who was one of her closest friends and supporters. Whether requesting funds for the boarding school in St. Louis in 1827, or reflecting on the investment that her brother made to finance part of her work with the Potawatomi, Philippine relied on the generosity of friends and family to help support the expansion of Sacred Heart education. In one letter she seeks financial aid for Potawatomi students: “We would like to have little Indian girls, but it is to tempt Providence to begin without a little fund to at least buy clothing for these children. See whether among your friends you can secure a small annual income to aid this work.” In another letter, she writes about the need for facilities: “Our houses in Louisiana are growing, and those of Missouri are still small. It is my lot and I cherish it. But the need to lock up more securely, since we were robbed, makes me recall again that you have had the charity in one of your last letters if I had any needs, if you could do something this year.”

On May 6, 2017, Head of School Catherine Ronan Karrels ’86 was honored by The John Carroll Society (JCS), Archdiocese of Washington, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown, alongside three lay heads of area Catholic schools: Dan Kerns, Georgetown Visitation; Katy Prebble, Academy of the Holy Cross; and, Jeff Mancabelli, St. John’s College High School. Mrs. Karrels said, “I believe that this award is in recognition of our community and the great collective work that is transpiring at Stone Ridge. As we strive to make the love of God known in the world, we do so as a team. I accepted this award as a shared honor for all the members of our Sacred Heart community. As Stone Ridge crosses new frontiers of our own, we will continue to require resource development as an essential ingredient to remaining an outstanding educational institution. Today we face a number of frontiers—academic, social, and global frontiers as technology and our global economy continue to change the way we work, the way we live, and the way we relate. We face frontiers in our Catholic Church, in our national political discussions, and in our world, as women continue to strive to break through barriers on many levels. In the academic world the pace of change accelerates annually as technology improves and impacts what we produce, what jobs are available, and what skills students will need in the future.

Education and our educational practices must keep pace with this acceleration.

Keeping pace requires resources to secure top talent to staff our classrooms, materials for classroom instruction, technological equipment,

and a vibrant physical space. Therefore, the tradition of seeking partnership through the generosity of our community in our educational mission continues to be essential to our success today. This annual report provides a financial snapshot of the School and acknowledges the essential contributions made by you­­—our donors and volunteers.

It is with a deep sense of gratitude and a profound call to stewardship that we highlight this information to our community. STONE RIDGE AUCTION • Saturday, November 4, 2017 The Fête à Bordeaux 2017 Auction Gala and Dinner was a fabulous celebration and successful fundraiser thanks to the stellar leadership of Auction Co-Chairs Devon Scanlon and Carrie Tydings. The evening’s theme paid tribute to the bicentennial celebration of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne’s arrival from the Bordeaux region of France to the United States. The Stone Ridge Athletic Center was completely transformed into Stone Ridge’s very own Bordeaux-style village—charming spaces, twinkling lights, and rustic flair. Many incredible Stone Ridge parents, alumnae, faculty, staff, and friends dedicated their time, talent, and treasure to make this celebration a reality.

The proceeds from the event are critical to the funds raised in carrying the School’s mission, by helping ensure the vitality of our financial aid program. The financial aid program serves as an underpinning to our identity as a Catholic school.

In early September following the Mass of the Holy Spirit, a group of student representatives, administrators, teachers, and Monsignor John Enzler joined guests from the Duffy and McMurtrie families for a special blessing. Through this blessing, the School renamed Gym II to “The Andreas Center,” in honor of the late Dwayne O. Andreas, and for his generosity many years ago to expand the Athletic Center. Mr. Andreas is the beloved grandfather of Meghan McMurtrie Quinn ’87 and Amanda McMurtrie Herndon ’92, and great grandfather of Maggie Quinn ’17, Lucie Quinn ’19 and Sandra Quinn ’20.

As part of the blessing ceremony, the Duffy family was recognized for their generous donation in memory of Kevin Duffy, who served our community as a teacher, coach, and Summer CampUs assistant director for 20 years.

Prominently displayed above the fitness equipment in The Andreas Center is the motto “Gator Strong.” As Head of School Catherine Ronan Karrels ’86 said, “The phrase Gator Strong implies much more than our ability to lift weights or run a distance. We are Gator Strong when we come together around a cause. We are Gator Strong when we build the selfconfidence to speak up for our beliefs. We are Gator Strong when we stand up for a Stone Ridge sister, or reach out to a member of our community who needs a friend. We are Gator Strong when we stand up for the values of the Church and walk in the footsteps of Christ. May we use this space to strengthen our bodies and our community so that we can be strong and unified in God’s service.”

ROCK VIOLIN FUNDRAISER Last May, Kevin and Elizabeth Keyes, parents of Claire ’25, welcomed parents and friends of Stone Ridge to their home to see YouTube Sensation Adam DeGraff live for a rock violin concert. This special fundraiser for the music program featured a spectacular evening of cocktails and music with performances by our very own Stone Ridge violinists, featuring Lower to Upper School students. Thank you again to the Keyes family, Stone Ridge strings teacher Elizabeth Cunha, and the host committee for organizing this gathering.

GATORS GENEROUSLY SUPPORT “LIVING IN PINK” Every October, the Stone Ridge student community holds “Denim Day” when the girls wear pink and denim for breast cancer awareness, and give a donation for the free dress opportunity. The money raised this year was given to Living in Pink, an organization dedicated to aiding breast cancer research. Stone Ridge students raised close to $3,000.

Living in Pink was founded in 2004 by two-time breast cancer survivor Michele Conley. Living in Pink is a volunteer organization and 100% of the profits go to local research and awareness programs.

Several Stone Ridge women (and men), including alumnae, alumnae parents, current parents, and faculty and staff, loyally support the annual Living in Pink Luncheon to honor breast cancer survivors and those who provide care and compassion to patients. Cokie Boggs Roberts ’60 was honored by Living in Pink in 2005. This year’s luncheon drew an impressively large number of Stone Ridge supporters, pictured above.

A VISIT FROM OUR SACRED HEART SISTERS Stone Ridge recently played host to the basketball teams from Stuart Country Day School (Princeton, NJ), and the swimming and basketball teams from Convent of the Sacred Heart 91st Street (New York, NY). The visit, which included competitions against each other, tours of Stone Ridge, and meals together, provided a great way for our girls to get to know their Sacred Heart sisters.

WALKING IN HER FOOTSTEPS A Reflection by Stephany Fontanone, Upper School Dean of Students Recipient of the 2017 Hoy Fund fellowship; Sacred Heart Educator at Stone Ridge for 12 years

I have always been drawn to the writings of Janet Erskine Stuart, RSCJ. Ask any student in the Upper School and she’ll confirm that Mother Stuart holds a very special place in my heart, and I reference her often—from musings in the Weekly Updates to quotations up in the halls.

Stuart’s meshing of intellectual pursuits with a deep faith is something that has always spoken to me on a profound level—both as an academic and as a Catholic woman. Her writing is clear, concise, precise, and so visceral in its authenticity.

Since 2006, when I began my career at Stone Ridge, I have always included Mother Stuart’s writings on my AP English language course policies. Her message is so timeless, appropriate, and fundamentally important for overachieving juniors to remember. For truly, “…The indirect method [of education] is longer and less clearly defined. It aims at giving a guiding light within, and power to climb a difficult path, and pick a way through unknown country by that light. This must be waited for, and slowly developed, but in the end it is of greater worth. The training of the Sacred Heart aims at this. God hears our unuttered desires and as they are satisfied they grow… The more we desire and attain the more we shall desire and the more attain…that is why our life is so immense.” This notion of an indirect path, spurred by a guiding light within that cultivates the self all for the glory of God, is part of what I love most about the mission.

Before embarking on my trip to Europe this summer, I was fortunate to spend nearly a week celebrating the life and lessons of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne in St. Louis, MO, with some student leaders and colleagues from Stone Ridge and Network Schools around the world. I learned more about her pioneering spirit than I could have possibly imagined, and I connected with her on a deeper level— realizing that Janet Erskine Stuart wasn’t the only founding mother for me!

Initially, I applied to the Hoy Fund (see sidebar) for the opportunity to develop a trip for students to truly connect with the mission and charism of the Sacred Heart, to walk in the foundress’ footsteps, as it were. Inspired by Connie Solari’s talk (a legendary Sacred Heart educator from Atherton, and author of the historical fiction Sophie’s Fire) during the Roots that Gives Us Wings program, I was determined to visit the Sophie Barat Center in Joigny, France for myself. More profoundly, the realization that many of our students might never have the opportunity and joy to interact with an RSCJ on campus during their time at Stone Ridge was a stark reality that struck a chord.

As lay people, we are impelled to bring the mission to life—to let the legacy flourish—which is a daunting responsibility, but one which is very much our reality. The trip I hope to take students on is truly a spiritual retreat, for the experience I had in Joigny and Roehampton can only be described as transcendental.

I stayed down the hall from the room where St. Madeleine Sophie was born. I walked on the same terracotta floors and climbed up and down the same stairs. At one point, I swore I could smell the charred wood from the fire that caused her premature birth. I heard the same bell chimes. I sat beneath the same stone smiling Madonna statue.I smelled the pinot gris grapes in the vineyards where she would frolic as a child as I hiked a literal “stairway to Heaven.” I sat in the hillside above Joigny, surrounded by those same vines, and actually heard God. Praying with Sophie’s favorite Scripture from John, I truly began to understand the “I am the vines, you are the branches” message we celebrate on her Feast day. I blessed myself with water from the church in which she was baptized. I basked in the sun on the banks of the Yonne. I enjoyed wondrous moments of espacio under the shade of a brilliant row of chestnut trees at dusk. How I can capture a trip like this in mere words is a daunting task, even, ironically, for an English teacher, and I only hope I can do it half the justice of the joy and peace it brought me.

Connecting with Sophie’s childhood haunts made her even more real, even more visionary, and even more remarkable.

My next stop took me to what would be the mecca for any scholar and admirer of Janet Erskine Stuart, RSCJ: her tomb and the archives at the University of Roehampton. While in St. Louis, I connected with some RSCJs from England/Wales, including the archivist at Roehampton, who invited me for a private tour in which I was able to delve deeper into the woman who is a mentor and inspiration to me—both as an educator and woman of faith. I touched letters she wrote. I put the thimble she used during the entirety of her religious life on my finger. I flipped through her family Bible. I smelled leather bound Missals she carried with her around the world (literally). I marveled at her timeless erudition.

Janet Erskine Stuart implores us to “not wait for ideal circumstances, nor the best opportunities; [for] they will never come.” While these perfect moments may never come on their own, thanks to the incredibly generous endowment of the Hoy Fund, we’re able to make them ourselves. This generous gift of the Hoy Fund allows us to pursue our interests, nurture our passions; it truly emboldens us to model a “lifelong love of learning.”

REFLECTING ON GOAL III Senior Emma Sullivan on her Social Action experience The Social Action Program at Stone Ridge isn’t just an exercise in charity or a fulfillment of community service hours. Twice a month throughout the academic year, Upper School students leave campus to learn and work with organizations and people in need.

Several of our students visit Excel Academy Public Charter School, which is an all-girls school serving Pre-K through Grade 8. Emma Sullivan ’18 has been volunteering at Excel Academy since her junior year.

“When I first began working at Excel Academy, I immediately saw parallels between the school’s ideals and the Goals of the Sacred Heart. Excel Academy strives to implement the ideals of integrity, discipline, enjoyment, achievement, leadership, and sisterhood—core values that Stone Ridge also deeply respects.

The similarities between our missions are what make working at Excel so rewarding.

I work in Kindergarten classrooms where I help the girls with penmanship, reading skills, and mathematics practice. Although it may seem like a traditional learning environment, the main component of the classrooms

at Excel is the emphasis on shaping the student’s character. The teachers empower the girls, encourage them to be confident and curious, and teach them to build up one another, embracing the ideal of sisterhood. As this is my second year at Excel, I’ve also seen the impact Stone Ridge girls make, not only on Excel as a whole, but on the individuals they interact with. Stone Ridge’s emphasis on our core values allows us to understand the importance of implementing those standards during our Social Action visits to set an example to those around us.

Because of this, we are able to share our love for learning, leadership skills, confidence, and appreciation for sisterhood with the girls we work with. Working at Excel has given me the opportunity to take what Stone Ridge has taught me and use it to help educate others.”

Harvesting the Vine

Sarah O’Herron ‘90 and her husband Ed Boyce own Black Ankle Vineyards, a gorgeous, 145acre vineyard in the rolling Appalachian foothills of central Maryland.

Their decision to become vintners came about in 1998, after Sarah, who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a BA in history and a minor in French in 1994, and Ed left their jobs as business consultants and decided to take a break — an 18-month recess if you will — to travel the world. They explored Africa, Patagonia, and Bhutan to name just a few exotic locales. While whetting their appetites for world travel, they began pondering another type of adventure, that of starting their own business.

SARAH O’HERRON ’90 “Harvesting the Vine” from page 14 So, Sarah and Ed considered their likes – being active in the outdoors, eating delicious food, and drinking complementary wines. Starting a vineyard, they thought, was their best option.

Now, creating a vineyard is no easy task. There’s the finding of just the right land, the purchasing of the land, the recruitment and management of vineyard employees, the cultivation of the vines, the endless waiting for vines to produce the perfect grapes, the fermentation process, the deciding of which blends of wine to create, and the bottling, the marketing, and of course the selling of the wine.

Within each of these tasks there are challenges. Cultivating the vines requires daily attention; pruning, pulling of weeds and fending off pests. There are also climate challenges.

In the winter, for instance, when vines are dormant, each day must be cold. A few warm days in the middle of winter could lead to entire acres of dead vines.

With all of its possible problems and pitfalls, Sarah and Ed still decided to, as Sarah says, “Go for it!” They chose to ignore any negativity as well. “Really, we decided to take a leap of faith,” Sarah explains. “We didn’t listen to those who thought that we would fail or not do well.”

So they leapt. In May of 2002, after driving the back roads of the central Maryland Piedmont looking for land with their newborn baby Sean in tow, they found a farm along Black Ankle Road in Mt. Airy that had all of the qualities needed Scenes from Black Ankle Vineyard

for their dream vineyard: a distance that wasn’t too far from their home in Silver Spring; low fertility ground for cultivating prime grapes; and hillsides to lessen the chance of frost in the spring. With this discovery, their decision to purchase the land was made and their adventure began.

In 2003 and 2004 they planted their first 22 acres of grapes. And then they tended, for three years, each and every vine. It seems paradoxical, but to have succulent grapes, the plants must be under a lot of anxiety. Sarah explains, “Grapevines should be a bit stressed because when they are, the roots send hormones to the grapes.” In addition to needing old,

WHAT’S IN THE NAME? dry, low-fertile, rocky soil, the best grapes are produced with a small crop. That means pulling off little bits of the grapes and vines throughout the growing season.

Their meticulous attention to the vines paid off, and in 2006, they had their first harvest. Add to that two more years of fermentation in French oak barrels and, in October of 2008, their first bottles of wine were produced and ready to sell. They were officially in business!

Today, Black Ankle Vineyards has grown immensely – with 96,000 vines, producing 13 varieties of wines and bottling 7,500 cases – that’s 90,000 bottles of wine – per year. Their wine, considered high-end with the cheapest bottle going for $30, can be found in 150 stores in Maryland, in addition to being sold and shipped to Black Ankle Wine Club members.

Visitors to Black Ankle Vineyard today will see their beautifully built tasting room, made from sustainable materials right off the property. The walls were constructed of clay plaster from the vineyard ground and insulated with straw bales. And any wood you see is from trees on the property. To maximize their environmental conditions, they have a geothermal heating system for their farmhouse and both solar panels and living roofs on their tasting room and winery.

Sarah’s daily tasks on the vineyard vary with the seasons but are mostly about keeping everything and everyone working—managing people and equipment. In addition to a vineyard manager who lives on site, she employs those who tend the grapes and work in the tasting rooms.

Starting and running a vineyard is not Sarah and Ed’s only mastery – they have five kids! Four sons and one daughter ranging in age from 10 to 26.

How do they do it all? “There was a lot of juggling in the kids’ younger years,” says Sarah. But, as she suggests, her Stone Ridge education helped with it all. “I remember my

high school days as being very busy and productive. Learning how to be organized was imperative to being on top of my game. Stone Ridge not only taught me those skills, but gave me the ability to think and take on questions—to stretch my mind and not just remember facts.”

According to the vineyard: “When we found a promising vineyard site on Black Ankle Road, we were immediately intrigued by the name. Our consultations with local historians and long-time residents led us towards two likely theories about how the road got its name: the road remained a dirt and mud track long after other nearby roads were more rigorously maintained, so the name may simply stem from the muddy feet and boots that passersby were left with on rainy days. Local lore also holds that an old Native American trail called the Black Ankle Trail passed through the area not far from our road on the way to what is now Rockville and the road may owe its name to that trail.

While muddy roads and old trails have very little to do with making wine, the name Black Ankle sent our minds towards imagining what thousands of years of winemakers must have looked like after stomping grapes during harvest each year. While we take advantage of some modern advances like grape crushers and presses to take the place of stomping feet, we make our wines in the old traditional style in order to allow the grapes to develop into wines that express the soil and climate in which they were grown.

To our minds, the name Black Ankle Vineyards is a reminder of the generations of traditional winegrowers who have come before us, and our way of expressing our appreciation for all they have taught us about how wines should be made.”

Perhaps it is a footpath that leads from outside Hamilton House’s front door, up Rockville Pike, through the county and straight to the vineyard’s gates.

Sarah also remembers how the idea of possibility was nurtured at Stone Ridge. “I was often encouraged to do whatever I wanted, to take risks, to put myself out there and to know that not everything will work, but if I didn’t take risks then nothing would work.”

Welcome to Little Hearts, Stone Ridge’s co-educational Early Childhood Program (Infants & Toddlers through Kindergarten). Little Hearts is where the love of learning

begins in our Sacred Heart family.

Children in our Little Hearts program are taught using The Project Approach, which allows for an in-depth investigation into a real-world topic. The Project Approach is like a good story. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end.

For the fall, the Pre-Kindergarten students’ project was the apple. They underwent a series of exercises in becoming experts on all things apple; inspecting varying kinds of apples, dissecting them and studying their insides and seeds; drawing them; learning about their growth cycle; sculpting them in clay; inspecting the tools used to cut, core, and peel them; baking apple cake; and hearing from a guest expert to gather firsthand information about apples and what they can cook using apples. In the process, the children were given opportunities to apply literacy and numeracy skills as they represented their new knowledge and understanding in diverse ways.

As a culmination to their Apple Project, the students invited their parents to the classroom and gave them a tour displaying all of the activities they did around apples. Walking around the classroom, many of them holding their parents’ hands, they proudly displayed their work and explained their now vast knowledge on apples.

RED: SR FACULTY TAKE THE STAGE Under the direction of veteran Upper School Drama teacher, Sandra Blakeslee, Stone Ridge presented Red by John Logan. This two-man play tells the story of master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko who has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons Restaurant. In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken, in his studio on the Bowery. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing. [credit: http://www.playbill.com]

Stone Ridge’s production of Red opened on September 7, 2017 in Sophie Center. In their debut acting roles, Upper School Theology teacher Dr. John Hogan played the artist Mark Rothko, and Upper School 3D Design teacher Mr. Tom Doyle played his young assistant, Ken. Hogan and Doyle exceeded all acting expectations and dazzled the students, colleagues, parents, and alumnae in the audience.

All of the Rothko reproductions used on the set were painted by Stone Ridge alumna Emily Pannell ’09, a talented artist who specializes in bringing colorful, fantastical imagery to life through various mediums. After graduation, Pannell attended University of the Arts in Philadelphia where she studied Illustration and Art History. After completing her thesis and graduating in May 2013, she went on to contribute her work to various Stone Ridge play productions and produce an original illustration for a charity art book. Past play productions at Stone Ridge include The Tempest, The BFG, Shrek the Musical, and most recently Red. Pannell is now signed on with a local theater company, Artstream, to paint the set for an upcoming production scheduled to open in April 2018. She hopes to one day become a fulltime illustrator, and for her work to reach out to a wider audience.

Golf and Tennis Classic 2017 Founded in 1993 to honor Tom Harkins, the first chair of the Stone Ridge Board of Trustees, the Annual Golf and Tennis Classic raises funds to support the Stone Ridge Athletics Program.

The event was a fun day for all, despite the rain which forced the cancellation of the tennis portion. A special thanks to the Golf and Tennis Committee for their tremendous efforts in raising over $65,000 to provide new uniforms and student-athlete development opportunities.

recognize a member of the Stone Ridge community who has demonstrated outstanding and continued dedication to the Athletics program. Mr. Joe DiZinno has been vital to the Golf Classic, to Stone Ridge Athletics, and to the golf program. Honoring philanthropy and leadership within the Stone Ridge community

On May 10, 2017, Stone Ridge held a festive reception to thank the many Leadership Donors who gave generously to the School during the 2015-2016 school year. Philanthropic gifts to the School have a profound impact on the growth and well-being of the school, enriching our girls’ experiences and enabling them to pursue their goals.

As part of the evening’s festivities, the Barat Medal is awarded to those individuals in our community who have been especially impactful in advancing Stone Ridge through their sustained philanthropic and/or volunteer support. This year’s recipients have helped to shape the destiny of the School through their tremendous leadership. For that, we are eternally grateful.

Karen Dahut joined the Stone Ridge community

in 2001 when her oldest daughter, Madeleine, entered second grade and younger daughter Chessie entered Pre-Kindergarten. Karen remained an active and impactful member of our Board of Trustees after her daughters graduated.

In her early years at Stone Ridge, Karen served in a wide range of volunteer roles such as helping with the lunch program, mentoring new families, serving as a class parent, and volunteering to support our fundraising efforts.

Karen joined the Board of Trustees in 2011 and served as Vice President, Chair of the Development Committee, and as a member of the Executive Fall/Winter 2017 | 28

Committee. It was in that Development role that Karen truly distinguished herself as a game-changing leader for Stone Ridge.

As an expert in strategy and a fearless and optimistic thinker, Karen helped the Board of Trustees to not only embrace a big vision for the current work we are doing on the Master Plan, but also to embrace the joy and partnership that come along with inviting our community to invest in our future.

Her passion for the mission of Stone Ridge is contagious, and her ability to communicate with and inspire others has been critical to our forward momentum. Karen and her husband Bill have led by example as generous donors to the Stone Ridge Annual Fund and for special projects.

Elaine Vining has been part of the Stone Ridge

community since 2012 when her daughter, Caroline, enrolled in fifth grade. Her volunteerism and positive role as an ambassador of the School have been simply phenomenal. She has helped with a wide number of our fundraising projects and was a major player in supporting the past three auctions.

Elaine’s greatest passion in her volunteerism at Stone Ridge is community service. In the fall of 2015, she took on the role of Chair of the Community Service Committee of the SRPA and began to expand the service opportunities for families. Her first year she added an Advent weekend of service at A Wider Circle and a Lenten seven-week service project with A Cup of Joe. She also continued the work started by Lisa Payne and organized a Parent’s Day Out for injured Service Members and their caregivers and families.

In her effort to connect Sacred Heart Goals I and III, Elaine also organized a Mass and Advent Work weekend supporting A Wider Circle so that our community could celebrate the service we do as an expression of our faith life.

During her many years as a member of our business team, Sr. Geuting helped improve and modernize the department; aiding in the research and implementation of a new payroll system and managing the complex process with great expertise.

Elaine’s husband, Paul, has also been a remarkable friend of the School, frequently partnering with Elaine in many of these projects and more. As a couple, they have also consistently donated to the Annual Fund and other fundraising events.

She was a critical part of our annual audit work, and her diligent and careful approach were contributing factors to our consistent clean audit reports year after year. In addition, she was the behind-the-scenes manager of all of our financial aid files and database, an increasingly complicated task that required the utmost discretion and professionalism.

Sister Pat Geuting, RSCJ ’52, joined the

Stone Ridge community 72 years ago, when she entered sixth grade as a 10-year old girl. Though she is now retired from her daily work in the Stone Ridge business office, Sr. Geuting joined the Board of Trustees in 2016, and currently serves on both the Executive Committee and Master Plan Committee.

About her contributions, Director of Finance & Operations Eric Osberg reflects, “Pat set an example for me about being fully part of the Stone Ridge community.

I volunteer and give back to the Annual Fund because I really feel like it’s the least we can do to show our appreciation for how hard the teachers and administration work every day, and for how much they do for our daughters. And more tangibly, contributing to the Annual Fund allows the school to continue to do what it does so well.

Stone Ridge is really allowing my daughter to blossom. It’s not just that the school is challenging her academically in a supportive environment every day; it’s that the school is educating the whole girl.

Beyond academics, the arts, and physical education, the school also teaches her how to be a good friend and a good citizen.

In mid-March, the Alumnae Board challenged all alumnae to the Blue Gold Challenge! Throughout the six-week challenge, each team pulled ahead as members of their teams made contributions to The Stone Ridge Fund. The spirited competition concluded the Saturday of Reunion Weekend with the Blue team pulling ahead to win the Blue Gold Challenge. In the end, all of our Stone Ridge girls won as 642 alumnae made a gift to support their alma mater!

Alexandra Armstrong Scholarship Fund This fund was established by Alexandra Armstrong ’56 to provide tuition assistance especially in situations when a student is met with unexpected financial need.

Anne Dyer, RSCJ Scholarship Fund Through an initial, generous donation from the Kiplinger Foundation in November 2000, this fund has been named to honor the thirty-eight years (19682006) of stewardship and service of Sr. Anne Dyer to Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart. It is Sr. Dyer’s wish that this fund be her legacy and that deserving girls, who might not otherwise be able to attend Stone Ridge, receive a Sacred Heart education in her name.

The Thomas and Barbara Hoy Fund for Faculty Development The Thomas and Barbara Hoy Fund for Faculty Development is an endowed fund established by Christine Hoy Gosnell ’79 (mother of Charlotte ’14) and Elizabeth Hoy Shiverick ’78 (mother of Liza Reetz ’11—91st Street) in honor of their parents. Thomas and Barbara greatly value the role that a Sacred Heart education played in their lives, and continues to play in the lives of their granddaughters. Income from the Fund supports the ongoing growth of the faculty at Stone Ridge.

This fund is named for Marie McCarthy, a graduate of Newton Academy, who taught chemistry at Stone Ridge for twenty-five years. Mrs. McCarthy designed and implemented the first science curriculum for the Middle and Upper Schools at Stone Ridge and was named 1988 Chemistry Teacher of the Year. At her request upon her retirement in 1988, a scholarship was established in her name to offer financial assistance to students in need.

This fund was established in 1985 by a major contribution from Mr. Edward Dickinson to be used at the discretion of the Head of School. It has become a source of tuition assistance for students in need.

Sandra Dubinsky Scholarship Fund

Diana Scully Lee Memorial Fund

Named in honor of former Director of Admission, Sandra B. Dubinsky, this fund supports financial aid for students at Stone Ridge.

Employee Critical Needs Fund Contributions to this fund help offset yearly expenses to address staff members’ needs that are not covered by Stone Ridge long-term and short-term disability benefits.

The Carlette Engel De Janosi Scholarship Fund This endowed scholarship was established by Madeleine Engel de Janosi McMullan ’46 and her husband, James, in memory of Mrs. McMullan’s mother, who was a French teacher at “1719.” The fund provides scholarship aid to an Upper School Student.

Julian E. Gillespie, Jr. Athletic Fund This fund was set up following the sudden and untimely death of Julian Gillespie in 1982, the father of four Stone Ridge alumnae, Joan Gillespie Swift ’78, Ellen Clare Gillespie Dreyer ’79, Elizabeth Gillespie Billings ’80, and Julie Gillespie Sanders ’82. Proceeds are used to support the athletic department.

Sister Irene Good Scholarship Fund This fund is named for Sister Irene Good who lived and worked at Stone Ridge on two different occasions for nearly fifteen years. Sister Good is most remembered for her love of mathematics and her unique ability to teach the subject.

Mother Mouton Scholarship Fund Mr. and Mrs. Louis J. Boland initiated this fund with a major gift in 1985. Mother Odeide Mouton, who holds a special place in the memory of many alumnae, served as headmistress of Stone Ridge from 1957-1968.

She spent her last years in a retirement community for the Religious of the Sacred Heart in California.

This fund was established for Patricia Krane who joined the Stone Ridge faculty in the Lower School in 1972.

Mrs. Krane, who died in 1987, is best remembered for her gift of teaching young people to memorize and recite poetry that would remain with them for the rest of their lives.

This fund was established in 1985 by Dr. and Mrs. James H. Scully to honor their daughter, Diana Scully Lee ’65, who died in her early thirties. It provides a scholarship in memory of Mrs. Lee who is remembered by her family and friends as a vibrant woman and mother of three.

Daniel-Valdis Lubkans Fund This fund was created in 1987 in memory of the son of Catherine Hall and Andrejs Lubkans. Ms. Hall was a longtime English teacher in the Upper School. The fund supports the Lower School speaker series.

Anthony F. and Mary Malia Scholarship Fund Gerald Malia, a former trustee and president of the Fathers’ Club and his wife, Kaki Carolan Malia ’53, a former president of the Stone Ridge Alumnae Board, set up this scholarship in honor or Mr. Malia’s parents.

The Malia’s three daughters, Mary Catherine Malia Higgins ’78, Carolan Malia Taylor ’79, and Elizabeth Malia ’83, are Stone Ridge graduates. This grant is awarded to a student entering the Upper School from the Middle School.

The Thomas Allen Manfuso Faculty Development Fund This endowed fund established by John A. Manfuso, Jr. in memory of the late Thomas Allen Manfuso, supports professional development for English teachers.

The Schultz Fund, established in 1995 by Dr. and Mrs. Gullermo Schultz, is a fund that provides financial support for programs and tools designed to help students with learning differences.

Joan McNeil Tambasco Scholarship Fund This fund was established in loving memory of Joan McNeil Tambasco by her husband Anthony Tambasco. Joan joined the Middle School faculty at Stone Ridge in 1981 and taught Social Studies and Religion before retiring in 1996. Joan is remembered for her deep faith, and her talent to bring out the best in people—especially young people. In true Sacred Heart tradition, Joan set clear standards and challenged her students to be creative thinkers and empowered leaders. She was truly a beloved teacher.

Nadine Wetzler Scholarship Fund Nadine Wetzler, a longtime friend to the Stone Ridge community and mother of Nadia ’89 and Andrea ’91, died in January 1992. Her family sponsored this memorial fund.

Wendy M. Wright Endowed Scholarship Fund This fund was established by the family and friends of Wendy M. Wright upon her retirement in 2002.
