Children’s ER and Specialty Physicians’ Offices Open in Stone Oak

arents in Stone Oak can breathe easier now that The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio has officially opened its pediatric facility at 1434 East Sonterra Blvd., just west of Highway 281. The Health Pavilion at Stone Oak houses the offices of pediatric medical specialists and a freestanding pediatric emergency center. Doctors and nurses specially trained to treat children handle breathing treatments and blood draws, seizures and stitches, broken bones and sports injuries. It is the only dedicated pediatric emergency center and pediatric specialty medical office in Stone Oak or the north side of San Antonio.

If you need a convenient place for your child’s outpatient tests or treatment, the facility also houses Stone Oak’s first KidSTOP location. During the day, five of the emergency center’s 10 beds are available for kids needing specialized breathing treatments or IV medicines monitored by medical professionals - without the expense of an emergency room visit. If a patient’s condition worsens, emergency care is immediately available.

“We’ll be there when parents need us,” said Kris Rittichier, M.D., known to patients as “Dr. Kris.” “We’re here for your family 24/7.

In our emergency room, we see children newborn through age 17, and we comfort their parents, too.”

As chief of pediatric emergency medicine, Dr. Kris brings her more than 25 years of experience to Stone Oak. She anticipates a summer uptick in traumatic injuries, broken bones and lacerations as kids spend more time outside. Not only will patients be treated by health care professionals trained to work with children, every aspect of the ER visit from playrooms to popsicles is tailored to making the experience more pleasant for patients and families.

“Kids are not just little adults. Symptoms in children present differently. We are trained to recognize subtle clues in the physical diagnosis to find out what’s going on with the patient,” she added.

“Our nurses know how to put IVs in little babies - we do it all the time - and our respiratory and CT therapists have special techniques that work with children.”

As chief of pediatric emergency medicine, Kris Rittichier, M.D., brings more than 25 years of experience to Stone Oak.

Currently represented are pediatric neurology, nephrology, pulmonology, cardiology, gastroenterology, ENT with audiology, and orthopedics, with the intent of expanding into other areas as they grow.

The Health Pavilion at Stone Oak has in-house X-Ray, ultra sound, CT, MRI and a full laboratory.

Also in-house, X-Ray, ultra sound, CT and a full laboratory, so any scans or tests can be completed at once, providing quicker answers and shorter wait times. Once a diagnosis has been made, “we have a breadth of subspecialists available at our fingertips,” to which to refer patients, Dr. Kris said, because dedicated pediatric doctors affiliated with top-ranking Baylor College of Medicine practice on the upper floor of the three-story building. Their presence brings a level of expertise hitherto unavailable to Stone Oak – all at a convenient location close to home with free parking.

“One of the things that is important for health care today that it be multi-disciplinary,” Dr. Boston said. “Our intent is to put all the pieces together in one place to provide a collaborative continuum of care. One example is our audiology department with brand new equipment and audiology professionals to provide hearing assessment and habilitation for children with possible hearing loss.

This will be a tremendous resource for community pediatricians and emergency departments, as well as their patients, to provide early detection and intervention.”

Dr. Boston lives and raised his family in Stone Oak. He is very aware of parents’ concerns as they consider missed time from school and work when making medical care decisions for their children.

“Our specialists from Baylor provide a one-stop-shop for parents in Stone Oak,” she said. Parents no longer need to waste time with long commutes to find specialized medical care for their children.

Since 2013, when Pediatrician-in-Chief Mark Gilger, M.D., joined The Children’s Hospital, some 170 physicians have affiliated themselves with the faculty. Highly specialized physicians trained in pediatric gastroenterology, pediatric pulmonology, pediatric neurology, and pediatric nephrology now see patients in Stone Oak. “We have a strong, talented staff providing a very high level of care that has never been available in Stone Oak before,” said JoAnn King, The Children’s Hospital communications specialist.

“If you have to take time off work to take your child to the doctor, you shouldn’t be spending most of that time traveling. We are very mindful of that issue,” Dr. Boston said. He added that parents can be assured the physicians at the Health Pavilion have the backing of the entire Texas Children’s Hospital community.

“This is my responsibility as Surgeon-in-Chief to make sure we are providing the highest quality, ultra safe health care families can trust.”

The Health Pavilion mimics the bright colorful décor of The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio campus downtown. The Children’s Hospital is part of the CHRISTUS Health System. The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio partnered with Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital in 2013 to focus its efforts on pediatrics. Baylor College of Medicine recruits, employs, and oversees physicians; Texas Children’s Hospital provides consulting and clinical expertise. Most insurance plans are accepted including Medicaid, and parking is free and plentiful at the Stone Oak location.

Artist and Advocate Student Spotlight

Artin hasthe long “Kasen has consistently challenged herself with our most rigorous courses, including our most advanced art classes where she pursues her true passion,” said Reagan counselor Jennifer Griscom. “Kasen stands out because she is always engaging, always positive and relates to people of all ages on a variety of levels. Her teachers speak highly of her, and her energy is infectious.”

Kasen appreciates the community aspect of Reagan’s class of 2018, she said, where she participated in Empowerment Club and Model U.N. However, she found her home in the art department. Despite her ability and passion to create, Lee considered herself more a curator than an artist. “I like to make art, but my focus is more the historical and contextual aspect of it,” she said. Lee was interested in pursuing this future as an art curator, so she joined the Teen Art Guides at the McNay Museum to discover more. Junior and senior student art guides volunteer approximately 10 hours a month at the museum, planning and attending events based on current exhibits, running the microphones, helping with the activities and crafts.

“It is interesting to see how much thought goes into each exhibit,” she said. “There are so many layers to what goes on in a museum. The director is very conscious about incorporating those with different backgrounds – he wants to make art accessible. I really enjoy participating in my community.”

Reagan High School Senior Kasen Lee will attend the University of San Francisco in the fall to study international relations.

It is her community spirit that led Kasen to realize her deeper passion – to contribute in a real and meaningful way to improve the lives of others. Her life changed when she watched the Netflix documentary Syria is Burning, where she was exposed to the magnitude of suffering refugees experience. She was inspired by the story of the White Helmets, an independent volunteer-based organization that provides aid in emergency situations. The White Helmets focus on cities after they are bombed, she added, with volunteers running in to physically pull children and families out of the rubble in war-ravaged areas. Kasen knew she had to get involved.

“Those images grabbed me,” she said, “and I decided right there I wanted to focus my studies on international relations.” Kasen started reading everything she could about the region and the effects of the Taliban on the Middle East and began collecting funds from her part-time job to personally donate to the cause.

“I want to dedicate my life to those in need,” she said. In her spare time, Kasen works at Chipotle in the Vineyard, a job she hopes will transfer with her to California where she will attend the University of San Francisco and major in international relations. Chipotle offers a tuition reimbursement program for its employees, and Kasen also earned a $56,000 merit scholarship to help defray some of her university expenses. Her top grades and class rank made her an attractive candidate.

An only child, Kasen and her family moved to Stone Oak when she was in the seventh grade. Her family has relatives on the West Coast, and she looks forward to joining a close cousin who also attends the University of San Francisco. She hopes to continue to graduate school and intern in Washington D.C., then work for an international volunteer organization helping refugees. One day we all might be watching a documentary about Kasen.

VIA Metropolitan Transit unveils state-of-the-art Stone Oak Park and Ride station

On May 21, 2018, VIA Metropolitan Transit (VIA) unveiled its new $28 million, four-story, state-of-the-art Stone Oak Park and Ride station, located on the southwest corner of U.S. Highway 281 N. and Stone Oak Parkway.

Serving the fast-growing U.S. Highway 281/Loop 1604 area, the new Stone Oak Park and Ride station features a four-deck garage with 400 parking spaces and elevator access, an indoor, air-conditioned waiting area for passengers, access to free 4G LTE Wi-Fi, and a staffed full-service information center to assist VIA customers with ticket sales, bus route information and other services.

Servicing the new Stone Oak Park and Ride station are two extended bus routes, including Route 7 Stone Oak Express with service to downtown San Antonio and Route 503 Huebner Crosstown with service to the South Texas Medical Center. These expanded routes are expected to transform and enhance public transit to one of the fastest-growing areas of San Antonio, and help community members reach their destinations while avoiding traffic and congestion.

In addition, the Stone Oak Park and Ride station will be the first transit facility in the region to offer a direct connection to HOV lanes. VIA is currently working with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to provide direct access lanes connecting the upper level of the station’s garage to future U.S. Highway 281 managed lanes currently under construction. Completion is slated for 2021.

The new Stone Oak Park and Ride station is one of eight Park and Ride facilities in the region, alongside Crossroads, Ellis Alley, Elmendorf, Randolph, University, Park Hills, and Blossom, where commuters can park their cars and ride VIA buses that return back to the facility at the end of a workday.

The Stone Oak Park and Ride facility is the latest development in VIA’s “SmartMove” 5-year Capital Improvement Plan, which is “about taking action now, with near-term solutions that help improve the VIA system today.” Other components of SmartMove include new transit centers and improved customer facilities, such as the Southwest Corridor Primo, Brooks Transit Center, and VIA’s Patron Amenities Program. Through these initiatives, VIA continues to provide effective, cost-efficient mobility options that offer safe, reliable and friendly service to the San Antonio community.

Creepy Crawly Critters

Flea and Tick Prevention

Fleas and ticks can cause your pet a lot of discomfort, as well as carrying some nasty diseases. Telltale signs of a flea infestation are obsessive scratching, chewing on the skin, and redness or irritation. Flip you dog over and check his stomach, armpits and base of the tail. Do you see anything crawling? How about little black specks? Insects also hide around the ears or on the neck. If you still can’t tell, get a flea comb and run it through the hair on your dog’s back and legs. Get deep under the coat, close to the skin where fleas may be hiding. Position a bowl of soapy water nearby so you can drop any critters you find into it to kill them immediately.

So where do these pests come from? Fleas and ticks are canny creatures, and they have ways of making it into your home and onto your pets, especially in San Antonio with our long season of warm weather giving them plenty of time to breed. Furry visitors to your yard can carry these unwelcome guests, and that includes wild animals like squirrels, raccoons, rodents or feral cats that are almost impossible to keep out. All it takes is a few fleas for you to realize you’re battling an infestation of your yard, your pet, and your home.

Whether he’s hiking the trails with you or just exploring the boundaries of your back yard, it is important to give your pup a quick overall body check daily to look for injuries, burrs or debris lingering in his coat, or any creepy, crawly critters – namely fleas and ticks.

If your suspicions are correct, and you discover your dog is affected, start by washing him in flea and tick shampoo to remove the offending insects.

You’ll need to wash his bedding (and yours and the kids too, if your family is in the habit of letting Fido snuggle in human beds.) Vacuum carpets and clean other fabric surfaces. Once you have the inside of your house free of fleas, you’ll need to treat your yard to prevent the insects from breeding and re-attaching themselves to your pup. You can call your pest control service or visit your local hardware or feed store to purchase a commercially available product. You’ll need to re-treat in approximately two weeks to kill the new hatchlings. It is important to stay consistent with treatments to make sure new fleas are not allowed to hatch and repeat the cycle.

Consult your veterinarian for flea/tick prevention for your pet. There are topical solutions, sprays, shampoos, as well as oral medication. Your vet will be able to recommend the best option for you and your furry family member.

Cruising Along

D

ixie and John Watson are among a very small group of people who can claim they celebrated the Millennium New Year twice. They were cruising on the Silver Wind, which positioned itself in waters on the International Dateline so they would be the first to ring in 2000. Then they simply crossed the dateline back into 1999, and rang 2000 in again.

The Millennium New Year is not the first time John has been present at a milestone occasion. His father’s august military career afforded him a bird’s eye view of events in the last half of the 20th century as they played out on the world’s stage.

John, his mother and brother were some of the first dependents allowed to join military personnel stationed in Japan after World War II. Later, his father was named U.S. Commandant of Berlin while the Berlin Wall was being erected. John was fortunate to be allowed on the dais along with then-Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson and the other Allied commanders for a commemorative event. The family moved to Atlanta, where his father took command of the 3rd Army – during the Cuban Missile Crisis. John’s experiences, whether as a small child or teen, impressed upon him a life-long bond of respect and admiration for the military.

The Watsons collect pins from all the places they’ve visited, which they proudly display in a place of honor in the den of their home, along with other mementos of their family and travels.

It was in Atlanta that John met Dixie at an officers’ club mixer for college students, as they were both “Army Brats.” The two attended the University of Georgia and were married as soon as they graduated. The Watsons still delight in following their Georgia Bulldog teams and have high hopes for a National Football Championship.

John began a career in retail at Rich’s department store. He would travel to New York to buy all the fashion fabrics for the high-end, Atlantabased chain. He eventually spent 20 years in the retail business while Dixie happily raised their two daughters, Ginny and Susan.

The couple moved to San Antonio in 1985 to be close to Dixie’s widowed mother. John seized the opportunity to reconnect with his military roots and apply for a civil service position at Kelly Air Force Base. His business skills and attention to detail led to his two-decades long second career in logistics. While at Kelly, he redesigned the labor-intensive storage system for assets needed for deployment. His service was timely, as the base ramped up to supply reserve units during Desert Shield/Desert Storm. John earned his master’s degree in purchasing and acquisitions in 1999, which jumpstarted a move to Corpus Christi Army Depot.

Dixie held down the home front in San Antonio, working in information systems at Bexar County and then USAA until she retired in 2003. A new component now available is the option to include a televised tournament scoreboard broadcast live on a big screen.

If your event involves 400+ golfers, you have an option to include play on sister course Silverhorn to accommodate the large number. One facilitator will coordinate with both venues to streamline all the details.
