Glenn Macleay inspires students after 25years W
alking into Glenn MacLeay’s social studies classroom on the first day of school one is immediately faced with his philosophy: GOAL + PLAN + HARD WORK = SUCCESS. Written on a big white banner with bold red lettering, this motivational motto serves as a reminder to his students that it takes each of these qualities to lead a fulfilling life. MacLeay not only engrains this philosophy into the minds and hearts of his students, but he also carries it out in his own life by setting an inspiring example to everyone who crosses his path at Ronald Reagan High School. “I never made a B in school, I could have gone to law school and become a lawyer,” says McLeay. Yet, the desire to become a teacher was instilled in MacLeay at an early age. Watching his parents and brother teach for years made him discover that he too had a passion for people and a desire to make a positive difference in the lives of students. His favorite teacher was his brother, Bill, who not only coached and taught MacLeay during high school, but also helped him through his college math courses. “He always modeled for me to go to the next step,” says MacLeay, adding that Reagan Principal Fred Boyd has also been a wonderful role model. “I’ve been blessed to be around a lot of good people.” After graduating from Trinity University and earning a master’s degree, MacLeay set a plan for himself to put his teaching ambitions into action. He started out coaching football, basketball, baseball, soccer and track, and served as a mentor through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. An organization close to MacLeay’s heart, the FCA challenges coaches and athletes to empower young people to make a difference on the field and off.
“I’ve always tried to find something productive to do, but the thing I enjoy most is the kids. [These students are] another reason why I got into this profession.” MacLeay has now dedicated 25 years of his life to teaching, coaching and mentoring the thousands of kids who have crossed his path. But, as a social Glenn MacLeay teaches World studies teacher he wants students to History and Social Studies at take away one particular lesson – the Ronald Reagan High School importance of being a good citizen. “Have a tolerance for others, respect for your country, a love for freedom, a desire to participate in the community and an understanding that the people around you are human beings worthy of that respect,” says MacLeay. He also has some advice for graduating seniors who are about to face their first years on their own. “Don’t ever quit. The first year in college is the hardest. If you make it your first year, you’ll pull through the rest of the way,” he says. “You’ve got to set a goal for yourself, have a plan and really put in some hard work in order to succeed. You can stumble at any three of those steps, but the real challenge is the hard work that you put into it in order to have success in the end.” Throughout the past 25 years, MacLeay has accumulated countless moments, honors and recognitions highlighting the impact he has made in the lives of so many. The best recognition for MacLeay, however, is when his former students return for a visit. One such student has made MacLeay particularly proud. Joe Carpenter joined the military after graduating from Reagan High, served in both Iraq and Afghanistan and was even named Enlisted Man of the Year. “Hearing things like that,” says MacLeay, “now that’s the best award.” Right at Home is proud to recognize Glenn MacLeay as our first Featured Teacher recipient. We commend all of our local teachers on their dedication, hard work and selfless efforts in educating this generation of students, our next generation of leaders.
