HOP on the Bus to good health Healthy U Express offers digital mammograms with same-day results

usy women are notorious for putting their needs behind those of their families so taking time to have a mammogram doesn’t always happen as regularly as it should. Even though most women today know the importance of getting screened for breast cancer, other barriers to mammography may be a lack of health insurance, transportation, or difficulties taking time off from work. Breaking down the barriers preventing all women in Bexar County from being screened is exactly what University Health System’s big, beautiful and very blue new “bus” is all about. It’s called the Healthy U Express and area businesses and organizations with a large number of women employees over the age of 40 are encouraged to contact University Health System to ask about bringing it to their workplaces. Information is available online at www. or by phone at 210-358-3720.

Medicine San Antonio, radiologists at CTRC are able to immediately read the mammograms and report results back to the team in the vehicle. “Getting your results right away offers great peace of mind,” says Anna McAndrew, University Health System’s health services director running the Mobile Mammography program. “We are so thrilled to be able

to bring this important service out to large employers, schools and churches across Bexar County.” The Healthy U Express also includes a separate exam room, so that other health screenings can be made available for the whole family.

If you see the vehicle out and about, you may wonder who those smiling people are on the sides. The “family” side features University Health System staff members. The The vision to make mammography more accessible to more women came University Health System staff members in directly from the Bexar County Hospital District Board of Managers, who pink on the other side are all employees and challenged the University Health System leadership to develop a state-of- breast cancer survivors. the-art mammography outreach program. World History Teacher

Glenn Macleay inspires students after 25years W

alking into Glenn MacLeay’s social studies classroom on the first day of school one is immediately faced with his philosophy: GOAL + PLAN + HARD WORK = SUCCESS. Written on a big white banner with bold red lettering, this motivational motto serves as a reminder to his students that it takes each of these qualities to lead a fulfilling life. MacLeay not only engrains this philosophy into the minds and hearts of his students, but he also carries it out in his own life by setting an inspiring example to everyone who crosses his path at Ronald Reagan High School. “I never made a B in school, I could have gone to law school and become a lawyer,” says McLeay. Yet, the desire to become a teacher was instilled in MacLeay at an early age. Watching his parents and brother teach for years made him discover that he too had a passion for people and a desire to make a positive difference in the lives of students. His favorite teacher was his brother, Bill, who not only coached and taught MacLeay during high school, but also helped him through his college math courses. “He always modeled for me to go to the next step,” says MacLeay, adding that Reagan Principal Fred Boyd has also been a wonderful role model. “I’ve been blessed to be around a lot of good people.” After graduating from Trinity University and earning a master’s degree, MacLeay set a plan for himself to put his teaching ambitions into action. He started out coaching football, basketball, baseball, soccer and track, and served as a mentor through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. An organization close to MacLeay’s heart, the FCA challenges coaches and athletes to empower young people to make a difference on the field and off.

“I’ve always tried to find something productive to do, but the thing I enjoy most is the kids. [These students are] another reason why I got into this profession.” MacLeay has now dedicated 25 years of his life to teaching, coaching and mentoring the thousands of kids who have crossed his path. But, as a social Glenn MacLeay teaches World studies teacher he wants students to History and Social Studies at take away one particular lesson – the Ronald Reagan High School importance of being a good citizen. “Have a tolerance for others, respect for your country, a love for freedom, a desire to participate in the community and an understanding that the people around you are human beings worthy of that respect,” says MacLeay. He also has some advice for graduating seniors who are about to face their first years on their own. “Don’t ever quit. The first year in college is the hardest. If you make it your first year, you’ll pull through the rest of the way,” he says. “You’ve got to set a goal for yourself, have a plan and really put in some hard work in order to succeed. You can stumble at any three of those steps, but the real challenge is the hard work that you put into it in order to have success in the end.” Throughout the past 25 years, MacLeay has accumulated countless moments, honors and recognitions highlighting the impact he has made in the lives of so many. The best recognition for MacLeay, however, is when his former students return for a visit. One such student has made MacLeay particularly proud. Joe Carpenter joined the military after graduating from Reagan High, served in both Iraq and Afghanistan and was even named Enlisted Man of the Year. “Hearing things like that,” says MacLeay, “now that’s the best award.” Right at Home is proud to recognize Glenn MacLeay as our first Featured Teacher recipient. We commend all of our local teachers on their dedication, hard work and selfless efforts in educating this generation of students, our next generation of leaders.

Dr. Davis helps

patients get back on their feet fast W

ith 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, 19 muscles and countless tendons, the foot is a pretty complex part of the body under constant strain. Not surprisingly, most people will eventually have a problem with their feet. And yet, foot disorders are among the most neglected health problems in the U.S. today. “We get a lot of patients who come to us after being in pain for many years,” says Dr. Ed Davis, founder of the South Texas Podiatrist practice. “Even those who have had heel pain for five or 10 years, we can take care of that. We are in a profession that can get people back on their feet again.” Currently located in Stone Oak and Live Oak, South Texas Podiatrist treats children, adults and athletes with any number of ailments, from bunions, ingrown toenails and diabetic foot care to flat feet, injuries and heel pain. With more than 25 years of experience, Dr. Davis is an expert in a wide variety of treatment options, including the newest non-invasive or minimally invasive technologies that allow patients to avoid major surgery and return to their active lifestyles faster. “In San Antonio, where so many are self-employed or are private contractors who cannot afford to take three months off of work to recuperate, people can really see the benefits of these new technologies,” says Dr. Davis. One of only 18,000 podiatrists nationwide, Dr. Davis’ interest in this field first began when he was a patient himself. As a teen, Dr. Davis was suffering from a reoccurring foot ailment. His family doctor finally suggested surgery, but a podiatrist permanently fixed the problem with a much less invasive procedure. The experience may be why the mission of South Texas Podiatrist is to focus on the cause of the problem as opposed to just treating the symptoms.

Our services Include: • Regular office hours 9:30 am to 6 pm. • Emphasis on conservative treatment for foot pain and biomechanics. • Diabetic shoes and durable medical equipment dispensing. • Bunion Surgery • Diagnostic Ultrasound on-site • Hospital and ambulatory surgery center procedures. • Handicap accessible office. • Acceptance of most insurance plans.

There are numerous options for treating foot and ankle disorders. Bunions, for instance, can be taken care of in at least 30 different ways. Helping patients become an active participant in their own health care and wade all the options

is another important mission for Dr. Davis, who created two informative websites and penned “The Heel Pain Guide: A guide to understanding its causes and treatments.” “We want people to educate themselves and make decisions on their own behalf,” says Dr. Davis. “We have gone through generations where insurance companies made the health care decisions for individuals based on the bottom line. They’re not really concerned with the long term.”

“Pain is the body’s way of telling you there’s a problem,” continues Dr. Davis. “And whenever we can

finally offer our patients a solution and restore their function, they are just really thankful.” Ed Davis, DPM, FACFAS

Dr. Ed Davis is a podiatrist with over 25 year of experience treating foot and ankle problems. He believes that foot and ankle problems are most effectively treated when the diagnosis and treatment is focused on the cause of the problem as opposed to treating symptoms. Podiatry is a profession which grew based on the concept of keeping people on their feet during treatment as much as possible, minimizing time loss, minimizing disability. Active patients recover faster from foot problems and are less likely to have the problems recur. A focus on minimally invasive procedures, noninvasive procedures and advanced diagnostic techniques help make that possible. Dr. Davis believes that the best patient is one who is well informed about their diagnosis and treatment and is actively involved in their treatment plan. He then relocated to San Antonio in December 2007 to enter practice at South Texas Podiatrist. He brings twenty-five years of clinical experience in biomechanics and foot surgery. Dr. Davis is a former surgical instructor at two podiatric residency training programs in foot and ankle surgery.
