This Reagan high school senior packs a surprising punch, reaching an elite level of skill that inspires her to achieve even more.

T

hink of a martial arts expert and Bruce Lee may come to mind, or the more recent cinematic feats that wowed audiences in the film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.”

But add Reagan High School senior Annick La-Branche to your list of what it means to achieve black belt expertise.

A Mexican-Haitian-American, Annick has spent just six years here in San Antonio, time enough for her to achieve a black belt in taekwondo—along with an impressive academic record.

Graduating in just a few months in the top 5% of her class, she’s set some aspirational goals: “I want an Ivy League education, to go from there to medical school, and to become a neurosurgeon,” she says in such a matter-of-fact way that you think she’ll have no problem doing just that.

Part of her confidence comes from the discipline she’s honed through taekwondo—a Korean art of self-defense. She says martial arts just helps reinforce the discipline her parents instilled. “They taught me that in order to excel at school, one needs to work hard,” she says. “And to work hard, one needs discipline. “[In taekwondo,] one’s achievement is based not on how smart one is, but on how disciplined and committed one is, which is similar to academic achievement.”

Annick La-Branche, with her black belt, hopes her hand-eye coordination will equip her to perform brain surgery as a future neurosurgeon.

Annick has enrolled in a slew of A.P. courses (six), and she’s in a host of national honor societies along with favorite activities like Biology Club and Chemistry Club. But science-minded as she is, Annick also enjoys English, world history and art—sketching and writing in her spare time, while taking in the arts scene in San Antonio’s downtown.

For her, life seems to be all about self-improvement, whether mastering new skills at the Elite Martial Arts dojo or taking up cello in the midst of the college application process. “Whenever I learn something I am better suited to understand how the world works, and if I better understand how the world works, then I’m better suited to understand why some things don’t work and how to fix them,” she says.

Annick has been accepted into Princeton University where she hopes to continue her education through immersion in a challenging yet enjoyable atmosphere of academic excellence.

Prepared to Volunteer After a lifetime of service in different ways, Independence Hill residents Steve and Betty Wells can’t stop giving back.

I

t was a typical morning in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where Steve and Betty Wells managed a hotel, when word came of planes crashing into the World Trade Center. Rather than watch the recovery efforts on television, the couple, then in their 60s, volunteered to go to Ground Zero.

“Seems like it was yesterday,” says Steve, who now lives with Betty at Independence Hill Retirement Community in San Antonio. “It was so obvious there was a need.”

The couple had long volunteered with the Red Cross Disaster Response Team. So just days after 9/11, they spent two weeks in downtown Manhattan with the Red Cross, handing out nourishing food to recovery workers. “We stayed in an old airport hangar over in Brooklyn and went down there every day,” remembers Betty.

Today, Steve and Betty, both 86, still volunteer. They recently reprised their roles as Mr. And Mrs. Claus for the Independence Hill community. With a twinkle in his eye, Steve’s a natural as Old St. Nick, and throughout the year he’s known for handing out candy to residents and visitors. The couple serves on the community’s Meet and Greet Committee, and Betty sings with the Hill Toppers choral group.

The Wellses married in 1952 after a romance that blossomed in an unlikely place: Washington, D.C.’s Walter Reed Medical Center. A master sergeant in the Army, Steve was on temporary duty there after recovering from an injury. Betty worked there as a 2nd Lt. Occupational Therapist in the Air Force.

“I offered to give her a ride to the train station, and that was the beginning,” Steve says.

After 20 years in the Army, Steve, a former Eagle Scout, worked for 20 years with the Boy Scouts of America as a camp director in the Catskills. The couple’s three daughters and two sons watched their mom and dad serve the campers, living out the values that scouting promotes.

Today, the couple has lunch at daughter Kathy Walsh’s house in San Antonio every Sunday. She looks in often and enjoys reminiscing with them about her parents’ long lifetime of service.

Lifelong servants at heart, Steve and Betty Wells enjoy container gardening outside their apartment at Independence Hill.

Bet on It!

The Stone Oak Rotary Club hosts its 8th annual Casino Royale: Wine Tasting and Casino Party this February, and tables and tickets are still available.

The Stone Oak Rotarians will make over the banquet hall at Holy Trinity Catholic Church so that ticket holders enjoy 007-worthy glamour, an international menu of foods and wines, and gaming excitement. Guests can try their hands at craps and poker, blackjack and more. A silent auction and several raffles offer more chances to leave as big winners.

Attendees also don’t want to miss a chance to help raise money for the club’s causes—like its signature school program, F.L.A.G., which stands for Fitness, Literacy, Attendance and Grades. “We’re working with two East Side elementary schools that were failing, and by helping students improve in those areas we’ve already seen great results,” says the club’s past president, Kent Kirkman, who’s now serving as the club’s secretary and membership chair. He reports the group also will donate 36 bicycles to the schools this year.

One of more than 30,000 international Rotary Clubs that emphasize “service above self,” the Stone Oak Rotary Club will raise thousands at this annual event, but with proceeds going back to the community, it’s the City of San Antonio that will hit the jackpot.

Stone Oak plastic surgeon recounts how facial reconstruction changes lives—from Third World villages to San Antonio.

Dr. Anand Shah, of Dr. Shah Plastic Surgery in Stone Oak, volunteered to help children overcome cleft lip and palate defects, spending a week doing surgeries at Global Hospital and Research Centre in Mount Abu, India.

H

ow much is a smile worth? That’s the question the non-profit Smile Train asks as it helps fund international aid to children with cleft lip and cleft palate. Stone Oak’s Dr. Anand Shah, a plastic surgeon and facial reconstruction expert, knows the answer: A smile is priceless.

That’s why in the midst of establishing a thriving medical practice in San Antonio several years ago, he volunteered with the organization, traveling to India and providing reconstructive surgery to children born with the birth defect. “We performed up to 10 surgeries per day,” he says of his week-long stint in the country.“It was just an amazing experience.”

Long fascinated by the symmetry and structure of the face itself, Shah used his medical training and skills to bring hope to children who may never have had access to this kind of expert care—essentially a transformation that allows them to live the rest of their lives with confidence. Shah calls it some of the most rewarding work he’s ever done.

While he’s a Chicago native, Shah’s family is originally from India. So traveling there to help kids with Smile Train was a way to give back to his parents’ native land.

Here in San Antonio, he sees only a small percentage of cases with cleft lip and palate at his practice, Dr. Shah Plastic Surgery. “There seems to be a greater need abroad,” he says, noting that better pre-natal care and nutrition in the U.S. help prevent the birth defect.

While he focuses on other kinds of facial reconstruction, including surgeries after the removal of facial tumors and other kinds of aesthetic needs, all of his work achieves the same result: it leaves each patient with a better self-image.

And beyond his private practice, he’s sharing his knowledge by training younger physicians. He works as an assistant clinical professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio to teach them the techniques he’s mastered.

Help Your Pooch Beat the Winter Blues

I

s it possible for our canine family members to get the winter blues? You bet. Just like humans, dogs can experience the same negative effects of winter.

During the colder months, we don’t want to go outside as often, and, therefore, our pets don’t go either.

Over time our pups become less active, gain weight, and sleep more than usual. Your friends at Camp Bow Wow came up with some alternative ways to keep pups active and their minds stimulated.

1. Indoor games. You can easily play a game of hide and seek, find the treat or tug-of-war. Playing with your dog is great for the entire family.

3. Midday walks. If you’re able to get home, take your pup for a midday stroll. Lunchtime is a tad warmer than the early morning or evening hours.

4. Natural light. If your dog must stay inside while you’re gone, create a way to have as much natural light coming in as possible. Dogs respond to light the same way as humans do. Sunlight has a positive impact on our furry companions.

5. Play dates. Keep your pup active with a little social time at a neighbor’s home, or schedule a play date at your local doggy daycare or with a pet walker.

2. Obedience training. Why not brush up on basic obedience or learn some new tricks? Teach a new trick like “high five,” spin, or roll over. It’s great for their minds and easily wears them out. One important, life-saving obedience skill is “come when called,” also known as a recall. Have your dog come to you in various parts of your home or apartment. Reward them with a favorite treat or toy, but remember not to use the recall for punishment.
