Beat the Rush and Plan Early for Back-to-School Immunizations and Physicals Many parents aren’t seriously thinking about back-to-school preparations quite yet. And while some activities – shopping for supplies, going to tryouts and orientation, arranging carpools – can wait until August, you might find yourself in a bind if you put off required vaccinations and physicals. Waiting until the last minute often results in long wait times and even shortages of certain state required vaccines. Beat the rush and plan early for your child’s back-to-school physical and immunizations.

We asked RediClinic clinician, Nellie Cruz, PA-C, a few questions to prepare you for the upcoming school season.

Is a back-to-school physical mandatory?

Yes, for students participating in athletics or other extra-curricular activities. They are required to undergo a physical examination before school starts. For some sports and extra-curricular organizations – especially football and gridiron-adjacent activities like drill team, cheerleading and band – practice begins weeks before the first day of school and will require physicals even earlier.

What occurs during a physical examination at RediClinic?

A proper school physical should include both a medical history and a physical examination from head to toe to ensure early detection of any health-related issues and that your child is fit to participate.

Are school immunizations required before the first day of school?

Yes. Texas law requires a certain number of doses of mandated vaccines before the first day of school. Immunizations are the best protection against serious infectious diseases.

Are immunizations required for students entering college as well?

Yes. All college students under the age of 22 are required to receive the Meningococcal vaccine. While communal living can be a highlight of the college experience, it can also be an environment that enables the spread of dangerous illnesses, such as Bacterial Meningitis which is mainly spread from person-to-person through the exchange of respiratory and throat secretions.

For Food Allergies, It’s Better to be Safe than Sorry Food allergy is a very scary issue that can also be very confusing. If a patient truly is allergic to a food, strict avoidance and understanding that they have a life-threatening disorder is crucial.

Keeping an epinephrine auto-injector available at all times and being prepared to use it just in case some of what a patient is allergic to accidentally makes its way into their food is very important. The most important element in food allergy diagnosis is the history. If symptoms upon exposure to a food are inconsistent with those that happen with food allergy, or aren’t happening each time a patient eats a particular food, then food allergy is unlikely.

However, if a patient has hives, swelling, breathing trouble, or vomiting within minutes of eating a food, they should be evaluated for allergy. Skin and blood testing are both options for diagnosis.

There are also patients who have eczema outbreaks due to certain foods, and while not imposing a life-threating risk, that food could cause a more serious reaction in the future and should be evaluated by a physician who specializes in food allergy. When it comes to food allergy, it’s always worthwhile to abide by the “better to be safe than sorry” rule.

HOME PRICES ON THE RISE IN STONE OAK! Great news for San Antonio homeowners! Sales prices for homes in our area continue to grow at a record pace. According to statistics from the San Antonio Board of Realtors®, the average price for homes sold in May 2014 was $225,114 -- up 4% from last year. At the same time, the average number of days it’s been taking to sell a home is just 65. That’s down a whole 13 days from last year!

That’s fine for the greater San Antonio area, but what about our lovely neighborhood of Stone Oak? Looking at the same numbers, we’re doing just as well, if not better. Sales prices in Stone Oak are up about 6% since last year and the number of days on the market is 39, down 10 days from last year. That shows me there are a lot of people looking to buy in the Stone Oak area. Surprisingly, this hasn’t resulted in a shortage of available

inventory in the area. Compared to this time last year, the number homes listed for sale still is up 3%. I see this as people on the move in Stone Oak looking to downsize or upscale.

If you’re in that same boat, now might be a great time to jump into the market. On the other hand, if you’re the one looking to buy, don’t kill yourself by trying to score a “steal” out there. When you find the home you love, make a solid offer or you might find yourself lost in love.
