Impact Urgent Care spearheads new level of care

T

here are now more than 8,500 urgent care centers treating some two million people each week in the U.S. One of the fastest growing sectors of our health care system, these walk-in clinics provide a convenient alternative for patients unable to get a timely appointment with their primary care physician, for those who want to avoid a busy emergency room, and for those who need reasonably priced health care. Yet, even though urgent care clinics all carry the same two words on the outside of their clinics, the level of care delivered within is hardly equal.

“All urgent care is not the same,” says Linda Ratner, a registered nurse and chief executive officer of Impact Urgent Care, located near the intersection of Huebner and Bitters. ”We are trying to educate our community about what makes us different”.

Opened in March 2010 by Linda and her husband, Dr. Evan Ratner, Impact Urgent Care is quickly becoming a leading force for change in what is still a relatively new and unregulated industry. While many urgent care centers rely on medical assistants for patient care, radiology and lab work, Impact echoes a fully operational emergency room with doctors, registered nurses, certified technicians and a moderate complexity laboratory, which, although not required for urgent care, allows Dr. Ratner to consider more accurate and complicated diagnoses.

“You should know who is treating you,” warns Linda. “Different clinic models offer staffing with very different levels of training, experience, and expertise.”

In contrast, the Ratners have not only cut into their bottom line in order to pay for the best medical team possible, they also hold themselves accountable to a higher standard of care. “Raising the bar, gives us the peace of mind that we are practicing quality medicine,” says Linda. “And when people come to us, they realize we are different.”

Open every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Impact Urgent Care typically sees many adult and pediatric patients every day. Along with offering physicals, baseline concussion testing, concussion management, lab tests and vaccinations, the staff can treat nearly any acute illness or injury, from sore throats and urinary tract infections to migraine headaches, broken bones, and lacerations. “We’re very comfortable caring for more things than the typical urgent care practice.” says Dr. Ratner, who has been an emergency room physician for more than 20 years. “We do get a lot of referrals from

doctors, and I am proud to say that many doctors and their families trust us for their personal care.”

Accepting most insurance plans, including Medicare, Impact does not cost any more than the other clinics, and Impact Urgent Care costs dramatically less than an ER visit. Patients are typically in and out within an hour. However, urgent care does not automatically translate to quick care. “We’re practicing great medicine,” says Linda. “And if it takes two hours to evaluate and treat you properly, then that’s what it will take.”

“For example,” Dr. Ratner explains, “ some of the headaches treatments include medications given intravenously and may require several hours to infuse.”

Since the very beginning, ensuring the safety and well being of their patients has been the Ratner’s number one priority. They have adopted innovative procedures, redundancies and systems to reduce the possibility of medical mistakes. And they thought about the little things too, there are televisions and up-to-date magazines in each exam room. The clinic is open, airy and inviting in design, and the staff is encouraged to go above and beyond for their patients.

“We’re still fighting that ‘doc in a box’ misconception. The idea that urgent care exists because it beats waiting in line at the ER,” says Dr. Ratner. “We don’t see it that way. We want people to choose to come here because they have confidence in our care. It’s not a compromise; we’re doing something really good here, something really good for our community!”

Making a difference one home at a time

A

fter numerous careers and plenty of personal hurdles, James J. Ivy has finally found his calling. With the January 2011 creation of Ivy Enterprises, LLC, this former Stone Oak resident is on a mission to revive some of San Antonio’s oldest neighborhoods by buying and renovating neglected foreclosed homes.

“I’ve always felt this was in my blood,” says Ivy, whose family has been in development and the rental property business since the 1930s. “I like to create and I want to make a difference in the community; and we are making a difference one property at a time.”

Not the typical “flipper” showcased on all those reality T.V. shows, Ivy’s venture appears to be a natural continuation in his journey towards personal betterment. While others in the rehab business may focus on huge payoffs and quick turnarounds, Ivy is dedicated to transforming longneglected houses into beloved homes through reputable business practices, high-end products and stunning transformations made possible through his sister company, James Ivy Designs & Consulting.

“My profit isn’t as important. We’re putting in quality products and there are no shortcuts because I don’t want the new owners to come in and be immediately hit with an electrical, roofing or plumbing problem,” says Ivy. “I’m a very spiritual person grounded in my faith and I can’t in good conscious not do something right. We have to live our lives with a little humility and grace and we have to give back.”

Although San Antonio is faring better than other cities, entering the real estate business during these tough economic times can still be a nerveracking venture. “But I can’t run my whole life on fear. I didn’t want fear to stop me from doing what I was called to do,” Ivy says.

That leap of faith is clearly paying off with clients, colleagues and friends wowed by the transformations Ivy has already made at four properties within San Antonio. In the next few months, Ivy will also begin renovating properties in Crystal City and Carrizo Springs. “Inspiration just comes to me. I look at the house, at the structure, at the bones and I just know which way to go. I think the houses talk to me. They look so sad and

then all of a sudden you breathe some life back into the house.”

James Ivy Designs & Consulting is a major component in renovating these foreclosures, but also remains available to clients seeking assistance in remodeling their own properties. “If people want to upgrade their homes, or put in granite counter tops, do a total makeover or a one-room remodel, we can do that,” says Ivy. “Through James Ivy Designs & Consulting our clients have access to one person who can connect them with all the resources they need.”

With his new venture, Ivy also hopes to inspire his clients to help beautify spaces beyond their own four walls. “I want people in Stone Oak and the greater San Antonio area to know they can invest their dollars in other parts of the community and make a difference,” he says. “I believe in the goodness of ordinary people and I would rather be remembered for my contributions to others than for anything else.”
