Adam Scarth I wish I knew how to talk through time
“It is very rare that grief expresses itself as beautifully as it has in Adam’s work. The paintings seem serene and contemplative; then their titles reveal a far deeper emotional resonance, inviting the viewer to experience it in a profoundly different way. Introducing these remarkable works to the world has been a great privilege and a huge honour.” Georgia Stoneman, Co-Founder of Stoneman Collins

The show ‘I wish I knew how to talk through time’ evolved in a direct response to the grief of the loss of my mother and concurrent process of my partner and I conceiving our first child. This work is a very visceral response to grief, joy and love and where they intertwine, a layering of the contradictions in which these emotions become present in one another and can no longer exist separately any more. Having come from a very literal practice in film, painting has allowed a space of exploration and limitlessness other mediums have not allowed. For me the paintings live in a space between abstraction and impressionism. They are a meeting point, where the memory of a place and the reality of a place coincide - the reflections that emotions, place and time have on one another, where reality becomes memory. The practice and process has evolved out of itself, each painting starting from a forced lack of intent, working directly on to canvas pinned to a wall, the size only determined after a moment of stillness and reflection, the initial colour and brush marks applied at pace, a simple response to instinct and feeling. Through these marks, memories and landscapes begin to appear and words begin to find themselves making an attachment. Each painting is then worked into over time, scratched back and re-painted, the final painting not resembling the initial marks but in response to them and the words applied above them. They are worked on until they can stand in their own clarity. Adam Scarth

Adam Scarth grew up in the rural countryside of Northumberland. A fascination with the changeability and beauty of the natural landscape was part of his life from an early age and he spent time photographing and dark room printing the landscapes around him, learning from his Grandmother who was a photographer in Germany during the War. Adam then went on to study film production at the Arts Institute Bournemouth, graduating in 2007, beginning his early career as a camera assistant. By his mid 20’s he was working as a documentary cameraman and stills photographer for charities that supported people in places hit by conflict and natural disaster such as Gaza, Egypt, Mali, Kosovo, Niger, Indonesia & Pakistan. For the past 15 years Adam has been working as a Cinematographer across Film, TV, Music videos and commercials with works such as ‘Mary and George’ starring Julianne Moore, ‘Under Salt Marsh’ starring Kelly Riley. ‘Starve Acre’ starring Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark, BAFTA nominated film ‘Apostasy’ and ‘Rialto’ which premiered in Competition at the Venice Film Festival 2019. Scarth is a 2026 BAFTA Cymru nominee for Photography & Lighting Fiction for Under Salt Marsh. Adam’s move into painting has grown over the course of the last 5 years, evolving from more figurative charcoal and pastel works into the semi abstractions that he is currently working in. Through his paintings Adam draws on his knowledge and years of experience and creative practice in the fundamentals of light and colour that his photographic grounding gives him, while freeing himself from its technical constraints and limitations of expression.
