Headmaster’s Thoughts

Welcome A new chapter and academic year for Stoke College. A successful half-term of achievement and academic success for our students and staff.

Welcome to the first Stoke News of this academic year. I am delighted to be able to take the time to write to you after my first half term as CEO of Stoke College.

Having worked from the Advisory Council (Stoke College’s governing body) sidelines for some time, it has been a privilege to take on the CEO reigns. An absolute highlight of my role has been getting to know our students and parents a little better. This busy term has given us two Open Events together with several other activities that have provided me with the opportunity to meet and chat with parents.

Our Meet the Tutor evening in September saw the Main House come alive with the happy buzz of Stoke life. I saw first hand what makes our school community so special: students and teachers performing at the piano; parents and teachers chatting animatedly about student progress; and our catering team discussing the thought that goes into our school menu planning. It was a truly delightful evening.

Over the past half-term I have been visiting classrooms, together with Mrs Hunn-Smith, to review the academic

work that takes place on campus each day. We have some noteworthy expertise among our teaching staff and I am looking forward to seeing this progress as we develop our Stoke Approach to learning and increase our classroom facilities. I have also noted the academic prowess among our student body and their desire to learn, to explore new concepts and reach their ambitions.

I do hope you will be able to join us at our first Stoke Community event of the academic year - our annual Fireworks on Wednesday 8th November. This year promises to be better than ever and I am reliably informed that guests will be treated to a fire-juggling display! Please see the poster (left) for further details.

New Term, New Adventures, New Stories Begin

A round up of some the exciting events that have happened this half-term on our beautiful campus.

We are so grateful to our incredible Estates Management Team for their work in refurbishing the Stoke Swimming Pool.

Our beautiful mosaic-lined pool had been closed for some time but thanks to the dedicated fundraising of our PTA, the generosity of the Stoke community and our Estates team, the beautiful pool looks better than ever and has been enjoyed all half-term.

Years 7-9 have enjoyed taking swimming lessons as part of their PE sessions. The whole school has been invited to join the Water Polo club, offered as part of our extra-curricular Diploma programme.

The pool will be closed for the winter months but plans are already afoot for how to use the pool once it reopens in the spring.

A Fireworks Spectacular Planned by New PTA Our new PTA team, featuring many new members together with some returning faces, are hard at work to build on the success of 2022’s event. extravaganza with feature Fire-Jugglers, Mulled drinks from the Pavilion Chalet, sweet treats for all and our own hot dog stand cooked by Stoke’s Chef Matt. We are grateful that Mr and Mrs Martin have kindly agreed to manage the S’more’s Firepit again, too.

Who can forget last year’s brilliant Stoke Fireworks? This year’s event will take place on Wednesday 8th November from 5.30pm.

Open Events for Parents Present and Future This term saw the opening of the Main House, and whole Stoke campus, for a series of welcoming events, for current and prospective parents.

On the 27th September we welcomed parents into the Main House for an informal opportunity to get together at our Meet the Tutor event. Form tutors took their stations within the LDC (Learning Development Centre), the English classrooms and the Library ready to chat to parents. This is proven Stoke initiative that helps build the parent/tutor relationship early on in the term as well as providing the opportunity to ask questions and raise concerns.

Our new catering team, under the leadership of Chef Matt, demonstrated some of their work for parents to enjoy throughout the evening.

On 30th September and the 10th October, we welcomed prospective Stoke families onto our campus as part of our Open Events. The events, designed by our Admissions team, invited families to listen to a presentation by Mrs Hunn-Smith, tour our classrooms to discover The Stoke Approach for themselves and chat with current parents and staff. We were overwhelmed with applications for the events and invited over 50 families onto our campus. Many have already made their applications official and eagerly await the assessment stage, taking place in January 2024.

In a new series for Stoke News, we look at the work of some of our parents within the Stoke Community. For this edition we meet award-winning photographer, Alison McKenny.

Alison McKenny is a multi-award-winning Portrait Photographer based from her home studio in Stoke By Clare. She specialises in Maternity, Newborn, Family, Pets, Fine Art Portraiture and Personal Branding / Commercial photography. Originally from Ireland, she married an English Farmer John, and has 2 teenage sons Sean and Aidan who have attended Stoke College since it was a prep school.

Alison set up her Portrait Photography business in 2011 and has been photographing Stoke College for their website and prospectus since 2013 so this year marks her 10th anniversary. See below for examples of her work.

Year 7 Climb New Heights in First Term at Stoke Form Tutors Mrs Connelly and Miss Coll took our new Year 7 cohort for a special team-building day out to Clip N’ Climb, Ipswich Our wonderful new cohort of Year 7 students enjoyed a day of adventure and team building at Clip n’ Climb this term, building skills they will carry with them throughout their Stoke lives and beyond. Fears were conquered and bravery was put to the test with the range of climbing walls each student tackled.

Following the morning of climbing, the centre set challenging mental and physical team building activities that sparked some healthy competition between peers.

Giant Jenga building, historical quizzes, F1 style rowing and speed stacking activities saw students develop skills in criticalthinking and communication.

The team ‘Da Climbas’ won the most points for climbing the highest on challenges Stairway to Heaven and Vertical Drop, and they were awarded with a voucher to return to the climbing centre for free one weekend of their choice!

Special mention to Freddie S and Isla S for reaching the top heights in the Vertical Drop, and Sophie S for being awarded house points for displaying kindness and helpfulness throughout the team building games.

The Path to Sixth Form Year 11 Steps Explained Mrs Hunn-Smith, Senior Deputy Head and Head of Sixth Form, explains the care and support offered to Year 11 as they make their future plans. in the organisation of this year’s spectacular Summer Ball.

Following last year’s overwhelming success, we are excited to invite even more parents to join us on Friday 28th June so do save the date!

It has been wonderful to hear how our outgoing Year 13 cohort have settled into their next steps, whether that be in University, Degree Apprenticeship training or employment. We are so proud of these Old Stokians and look forward to hearing more of their news in the coming weeks.

Do You Know a Future Stoke Scholar?

A word on Sixth Form Scholarships: if you are or if you know a Year 11 student who is expecting to achieve straight 7-9 grades at GCSE and is planning to apply to Oxbridge, Ivy League, Medical, Dentistry or Veterinary courses then please do get in touch with our Admissions team on admissions@ stokecollege.co.uk . Scholars will normally be expected to study three or four A Levels plus EPQ, choosing at least two of the following subjects: Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English Literature, Economics, History, Geography.

‘New’ Old Stokian Update It is an exciting time of year in the Stoke College Sixth Form, with our personalised careers and education guidance meetings taking place immediately after the half term break. In these session, Mrs HunnSmith and Mr Logan meet with each Year 11 student and their parents to discuss their educational strengths and ambitions, as well as the potential pathways open to them as they plan their post-16 education.

Whether a student is considering Oxbridge or Medical School applications, degree apprenticeships or direct entry into the military, we are here to listen to each family and ensure each student is supported on their own journey to a successful, happy adult life.

For our current Sixth Form students, everyone is used to their small class sizes and the outstanding personalised support they receive from their teachers, whatever subject combination they are taking from our wide range of A Level options. Year 12 are ready to begin planning an action-packed Charities Week (held in February) with a series of ticketed lunchtime events all in the name of fundraising for charitable causes. Year 13, meanwhile, are about to form their ‘Prom Committee’ to help 8

Finding Your Meaning and Purpose Miss Watson , Deputy Head Pastoral, offers advice for finding focus and purpose, drawing on the work of Suffolk Mind.

Whilst my role as Deputy Head Pastoral covers an array of responsibilities, one of my passions is promoting positive wellbeing and mental health among our students, staff and wider community. I really admire the work of Suffolk Mind and their #BeWellFeelWell campaign of 2023. The campaign considers the 12 basic human needs of positive wellbeing, focussing on a different theme each month.

I was especially drawn to the theme for September and the power of its concept: Meaning and Purpose. Without a sense of meaning and purpose in our lives, we can spiral into negative thoughts and actions, questioning our own value.

At Stoke College, I believe every member of our school community has a unique purpose and a valuable contribution to make. We encourage students to celebrate each other’s achievements and to listen to one another’s ideas. Our extracurricular Diploma programs provide a wonderful opportunity for students to work alongside those form other year-groups towards a common goal - providing an enormous sense of achievement and purpose.

Make a list of times when you recall feeling a clear sense of purpose and consider what made these moments special. See if patterns or themes emerge. Look for other opportunities of using these same skills. Perhaps learn a new skill, try a different Diploma activity or sport. One proven purposeful action is to serve the needs of others - perhaps volunteer to help someone else. Activities that allow you to connect with others can be enormously beneficial, allowing us to work towards a common goal and achieving something much bigger than ourselves.

I hope that you can find your own sense of meaning and purpose and, as always, if you have any concerns regarding a member of our Stoke community please do get in touch.

On days when that sense of meaning and purpose is a little cloudy, I encourage you to try this exercise, highlighted by Suffolk Mind. Create a “What makes you” checklist.

Extra-Curricular

A Night in the Essex Wilds for Stoke DoE Students Congratulations to our Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh students as they pass the expedition part of their Award. Mr Khan and Mr Misso report on the acumen of this intrepid group of students.

Last weekend six of our Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme students completed the expedition element of their award at Lambourne End Outdoor Activity Centre.

They set off packed with food, tents, trangias, plenty of water and, of course,a map and compass. Leaving the start at 9am, they walked confidently through the Essex countryside.

Have totted up the daily required miles, they stopped to camp at the Centre where they were greeted by Stoke support crew, Mr Misso and Mr Khan, who slept cosily in the cabin next to the tent site!

Out intrepid adventurers pitched their tents confidently, as they had been taught in practice drills at school. The group demonstrated a real commitment and maturity to the expedition, not only showing confidence with their map reading skills but also an admirable ability to work as a team. Mr Khan and Mr Misso are proud of their achievements and are looking forward to seeing them progress towards their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Mr Khan and Miss Affleck will be hosting a D of E information presentation after half-term for those parents and students in Year 9, looking to start training towards their Bronze Award.

New Clubs for the Stoke Diploma: Welcome Hens The Stoke College Diploma of Character and Resilience for Years 7-10 encourages students to step beyond their comfort zones and try new experiences, gathering skills and friendships along the way.

Students above in the Agriculture and Sustainability Club that takes place each week. The club are learning to prepare the ground for growing valuable crops and plants and animal husbandry skills. Recently they have refurbished a hen house ready for the arrival of a our own Stoke brood!

The Stoke College diploma aims to help each and every student to build resilience through experiencing a wide and often challenging range of activities, some of which will come easily, whilst others will take you out of your comfort zone – exactly what life demands of us.

In order to pass the Diploma programme, you will need to undertake at least three club activities per term (1 x art, 1 x physical and 1 x academic) and, ideally, one additional activity, e.g. River Festival. Attendance at each club is recorded and form tutors check the booklets each half term to monitor attendance.

Lions and Unicorns

Lions and Unicorns Battle with Pens and Paint This academic year, the Lion and Unicorn houses competed against one another for the first time in the Inter-House Art Competition.

This year, the competition brief was inspired by a drawing, sketched by Chinese International Summer Camp student, Park, who celebrated the beautiful buildings of Stoke College.

Congratulations to the three runners up, Lily C in Year 9, Ffion S in Year 10 and Ella S in Year 12, earning 50 house points for Lions and 25 for Unicorns. Joint second place was awarded to Daisy H in Year 8 and Kirabo N-L in Year 7; that’s another 35 house points each for the houses. And the final congratulations to our overall winner, Freddie Q in Year 11, earning a whopping 50 house points for House Lions.

In total, House Unicorn was awarded 85 and House Lion, 135!

Students were asked to submit a painting, drawing or collage of their favourite Stoke building for a chance to win house points and get a head start for Lions or Unicorns. With over 30 entries, Miss Coll was delighted with student enthusiasm across all year groups and the skills displayed from all.

Tales from the Boarding House

Bienvenido a Stoke College: Staff and Students Stoke College Boarding Houses have been a hive of activity welcoming new staff and students together with some returning faces, this term.

The Autumn term in the Stoke Boarding houses started with the arrival of our students. Mr Khan, Head of Boarding, was delighted to welcome familiar faces as well as some new members of the boarding community. As well as new students, we have had the of pleasure welcoming three new team members to boarding staff. Miss Ellen Affleck joins us as Deputy Housemistress together with the assistance of Miss Phoebe Crofts and Miss Chloe Cook.

The Main House and Stables boarding houses also played host, this term, to our guest students on the Stoke Immersion course. We have enjoyed the company of two groups of Spanish

students (group two above). We are now looking forward to welcoming a group of students from Mr Shi’s (Chair of the Stoke College Board of Directors) international school in Shanghai.

Our Boarding students have been on a number of trips and excursions this halfterm including visits to Cambridge; Ice-skating in Chelmsford; a sightseeing and cultural tour of London; and a local history orienteering trip.

After studying during prep sessions, our boarding students enjoy the chance to relax together with a range of fun activities including pizza making and some seasonal pumpkin decorating too.

Tales from the Boarding House

Miss Chloe Cook, has joined our Boarding team as a Graduate Assistant, working in the Boarding House and the Humanities Department. We are thrilled to welcome Chloe at the start of her career.

What has brought you to Stoke College?

Whilst I was in the process of completing my master’s degree in Environment, Society and Culture, I developed a particular interest in the perception of children and young people about climate change and sustainability. I was struck to find in my research that almost 80% of 8-15 year olds expressed a desire to do more for the environment.

This was my inspiration for pursuing a career in education. Working in the boarding house and helping in Geography and English during the school day, has provided me with the exciting opportunity to guide our Stokians towards a better future.

What is life like in the Boarding house?

I primarily work in Stables (the girls’ boarding house), and secondarily help in Main House as and when needed. As a member of the boarding staff, I feel more than comfortable saying that we are all like a big secondary family, and we all work tirelessly as a team to make the boarding houses a comfortable yet engaging space for young people.

Living onsite has been a

days, we will be doing indoor activities to encourage a confidence in sustainable living - such as watching wildlife documentaries detailing the climate crisis, looking into accessible steps children can take to be more eco-friendly, and asking for their ideas as to how we could make the club and the school overall more sustainable.

Favourite place on campus?

Whether they are with us all year round, one day a week, or visiting students from another country, we treat everyone fairly and always prioritise making our boarding houses a homefrom-home experience.

What is your current project with the Agriculture and Sustainability Club?

I, Mr Misso and Mrs Winsbury-Cutts are responsible for running our Agriculture and Sustainability Club every Thursday Afternoon. We are all incredibly passionate

individuals when it comes to our ideas for the future of the club, and our ongoing commitment to keeping children engaged with our current projects. Currently, we are finishing breathing new life into an old rabbit hutch to turn it into an eventual laying coop for chickens! In our next few sessions, we will be getting our members to help measure the space we will need for our chicken run, digging out trenches to foxproof their soon-to-be living space, before finally looking into rescuing a handful of chickens. As well as this, we have completely refurbished the old, overgrown herb garden outside of Stables and replanted new, organised and labelled herb plants in their place. On bad weather

I have two! The Walled Garden - it is right next to my accommodation and lovely to walk through on a warm sunny day with all the flowers, greenery and fruit trees. But I also love the English department rooms, and I’m confident the Library will be a favourite room of mine once the refurbishment has taken place. Reading is a favourite past time of mine and I very much look forward to making myself useful in the library space and (hopefully!) helping to make it very comfortable, calm space for students to study in.

Have You Considered Flexi-Boarding?

Flexi-boarding allows our day students the opportunity to stay in the Boarding House for up to three nights per week. Students benefit from peer-to-peer study sessions, allowing them to complete homework together and deepen their subject knowledge in a collaborative manner. Once study is complete, students dine with the entire Boarding house, building friendships that extend beyond year groups and developing confidence among their peers.

Flexi-boarders participate in all Boarding activities from creative projects to games challenges and we see students grow in confidence, week by week. The opportunity can be helpful to busy families who can rest knowing their child is cared for without the worry of the school run or completing homework.

Flexi-boarding is available on a first-come-first-served basis, subject to availability and is charged at £60 per night. Please contact Mr Khan to discuss, here.

Mathematics

An Inspirational Start to the Academic Year in Maths We welcome a new teacher to the Stoke mathematics team, see the reallife power of maths at Bletchley and celebrate the teaching power of Stoke.

Visiting the shop was a huge success, and many students purchased souvenirs, including several of the Year 8 boys who were sold on very cool spy glasses. After lunch, a guided tour by a resident expert enabled us to glean more information about the day-to-day workings of Bletchley Park and its people, including the expert code breaker Dilly Knox, who was brilliantly impersonated by Hayden in Year 8.

In the afternoon, students took part in a coding workshop where they worked in teams to decode a range of encrypted messages. This involved listening to Morse Code signals (used in World War 2 radio messages), using a Caesar shift cipher wheel, as well as a whole host of other coding methods.

On Thursday, the 5th of October, Year 7 and 8 pupils embarked on a daring expedition to Bletchley Park to investigate the dastardly German Enigma code that had confounded the Allied military intelligence service for much of World War 2.

The final highlight of the day was getting a first-hand look at the Enigma machine in action, with each student being allowed, very carefully, to have a go at using an original World War 2 machine.

Overall, this was a fascinating and informative trip, and all I have left to say is: “.-- . .-.. .-.. / -.. --- -. . / -.-- . .- .-. / --... / .- -. -.. / ---.. .-.-.-”

After an early start, we arrived at Bletchley Park, once the top-secret home of the World War Two Codebreakers, and had a chance to explore the site. There were various areas to investigate, including the original hut where the code-breaking teams had worked when cracking the Enigma code. Students visited Alan Turing’s office and explored exhibits that allowed us to experience what it was like to work in wartime Bletchley Park.

We “met” some of the Codebreakers and listened to the tales of men and women who had worked tirelessly in these tiny huts. Students were able to see first hand the Bomb machines that were built to decode the messages intercepted in the enemy’s radio transmissions and learn what it was like to work on these magnificent machines in primitive hut conditions.

UK Maths Trust Senior Mathematics Challenge It was fantastic to see every single one of our Senior 6th Form Mathematicians and Further Mathematicians taking part in the Senior Mathematics Challenge this year. The mathematics department was extremely proud to witness all our students enthusiastically putting themselves forward to participate in the Challenge and compete against their peers nationwide. The 90-minute paper is designed to promote reasoning and problem-solving skills, engaging students in mathematical puzzles that often go beyond the scope of a school curriculum.

The mathematics involved is often particularly demanding, designed to stretch the most able mathematicians, and the determination of our students to push and challenge themselves by participating in this competition is a huge success in itself. The willingness of our math students to immerse themselves in college life and contribute to super-curricular activities such as this is a testament to the positive attitudes of our students and demonstrates important key personal attributes. A tremendous well done to all our participants! You should be very proud of yourselves!

New Teacher Profile

Mrs Jill Groves joined the Stoke College Mathematics Department, this term. Her passion, friendly style, and experience make it clear why she was selected to join the strong mathematics team.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background in education?

At my father’s insistence - he had a belief that we should see ‘real life’ - I went to a school in a challenged area [in Scotland]. I was lucky to be taught by a host of inspirational teachers who instilled in us that education was the way to transcend our situation. My parents, too, placed enormous value on education. At university, I pursued a degree that often leads to a career as a Business Analyst. Once again, my father encouraged me to explore all options before deciding on a career path to teaching. Having spent a six-month placement in a business office, I knew teaching was for me. I took on a few voluntary positions to gain teaching experience and then pursued my PGCE. Again, I had brilliantly inspirational lecturers who were still teaching, so they had plenty of real-life experience to share with us. In over two decades of teaching, I have taken on a variety of roles, but the classroom is my happy place.

There is nothing like the feeling of students leaving the classroom, knowing they have understood it - not even a really nice glass of champagne!

I read a lot of blogs and am a member of several social media groups for mathematics teachers. We all have our own enormous filing cabinets of knowledge, but sometimes it’s through discussions with other professionals that bring it to the fore.

What advice would you give someone aspiring to become a teacher?

I try to inject humour into my lessons to dispel some of the preconceived ideas about maths. Through gentle coaxing, I seek to gain the trust of my students and invite them to join me on a learning journey, developing confidence in maths. I want them all to gain self-belief in their mathematical ability.

Can you share any creative teaching methods you use?

I use a lot of meta-cognition in my lessons — talking through how I would approach a question, explaining techniques.

I encourage students to constantly question and develop their analytical thought processes.

How do you handle diverse learning styles and abilities in your classroom?

The small class sizes at Stoke make this much easier. It is easy to create bespoke learning groups.

This is challenging in a larger classroom. For example, a group of visual learners can be set a task while kinaesthetic learners can be assigned a different task, and I can move between groups directing and supporting as necessary. Everyone can learn in their own style, gaining the most from the lesson and ultimately achieving their best.

How do you stay updated on the latest education trends and methodologies?

I would say, do it. It is a very flexible career and can be a great way to travel the world.

British education is still highly valued overseas. No day in teaching is ever the same you can plan a lesson to the nth degree, but you never quite know how it will unfold.

How do you plan to contribute to the school community beyond the classroom?

I am looking forward to going on a trip with the Boarders.

The boarding offer at Stoke, the family-orientated side of the school, really interests me. I am also looking forward to the River Festival in the Spring. I am also really enjoying being a form tutor; my form is absolutely lovely.

Detective Discoveries on Our Doorstep Stoke Science steps outside of the classroom for river investigations and a trip to a local butchers, plus we welcome a new teacher to the team.

Damselflies belong to the order Odonata, which is known to contain incredibly prehistoric organisms that have been around since the Permian period. The larvae capture prey by shooting out the long, hinged lower lip, or “mask.”

ear 12 Biology students were accompanied by two of our Spanish immersion students to sample the river, looking for invertebrates. We found several species of insect including alderfly larvae, caseless caddisfly larvae and damselfly larvae (above) all of which are species that indicate good quality water. We expect nothing less at Stoke!

Stoke Science Supports the Work of Local Clare Butchers For some time, Mrs Wilson has been supporting our local butchers, Humphrey’s when purchasing essential animal parts used in scientific dissection classes and classroom demonstrations.

Recently a Year 8 student, Tom K, gave a splendid dissection demonstration of the ‘pluck’ (the hearts and lungs) during an Open Event for future students. In many schools, students are not given the opportunity to physically engage with the organs until later years. Stoke College Science is proud to offer all students this opportunity for practical learning and scientific skill development.

Mrs Wilson organised for Year 9 students, Alessia and Lily, to join her on her latest visit to Humphrey’s, to learn more about the craft of butchery and the origin of our scientific materials.

Mrs. Elyse Maidment joined the Science Department this term. Her drive, enthusiasm for Chemistry, and collaborative teaching style will enhance this successful Stoke College department.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background in education?

I chose to study chemistry at university because I knew it would open many doors for me. Later, I attended Wimbledon Art School for a year to explore my other interests. After Art School, I took an internship in an advertising agency, but it wasn’t for me. One evening I found myself at a dinner sitting between someone from Médecins Sans Frontières and someone from the Renewable Energy Foundation (REF). The next day, I was offered a role with the REF, a very small think-tank and charity. This was a fascinating role for me - understanding the UK’s reliance on fossil fuels and how we could make UK energy more sustainable.

I launched an internship program for the charity and spent a lot of time visiting universities and talking with students. Part of my role was to create a program to educate all ages, and I really enjoyed this element.

This inspired me to take my PGCE and begin a career in teaching. I have never looked back; it is such a creative career.

How do you stay updated on the latest education trends and methodologies?

How do you create a positive and inclusive learning environment for your students?

I try to make lessons fun with plenty of variety and opportunities for student participation. It is very easy in science to demonstrate interesting and wonderful things!

What do you find most exciting about teaching Science?

I get to play with all the equipment and blow things up! In Physics, we get to electrocute students too!

How do you tailor your teaching methods to meet the individual needs of your students?

You have to know your students to see how they like to learn and approach ideas from many different viewpoints. Many of our students benefit from a sociable learning approach

with discussion around each topic.

How do you collaborate with other teachers or departments to enhance the overall educational experience?

I am currently exploring opportunities to work with other departments such as Art and Drama. I am working on a project with our Marketing and Admissions team too.

How do you handle diverse learning styles and abilities in your classroom?

As a dyslexic learner myself, I can empathise with those that experience barriers to accessing information. I set out to represent ideas and information in a range of ways that can be accessed widely, rotating ways of

Stoke College Produces Published Authors

Words in print for over 30 Stoke College English students, one of our new teachers shares their experiences and Mrs P’s spooky Autumn read.

At the end of the last academic year, lots of our students entered the ‘Unsolved’ creative writing competition run by YoungWriters. We were thrilled to find out, at the beginning of this year, that over 30 of our students have been chosen for publication in their upcoming anthology of entrants from across the country. At the time of writing we don’t yet know who is the recipient of one of the top three prizes, but we have our fingers crossed that one of our fantastic entrants will be in the top spot! Congratulations to every student who entered, and we look forward to seeing your work in print in November!

Stoke Autumn Reads We asked Mrs Parsons, Head of English, to recommend a brilliant book to read over the half-term holiday.

This term I’d recommend ‘Ghostwalk’ by Rebecca Stott.

I first encountered this novel whilst studying for my degree and was immediately captivated by the way it evocatively describes Cambridge in both the past and present. A story about Newton’s scientific innovations, seventeenth-century glass-making, alchemy, and the Great Plague, Ghostwalk centers around a real historical mystery that Rebecca Stott has 20 Stoke News

Stott weaves time and relationships together - the present and the seventeenth century are merged and figures from the past are entwined with the twenty-first century woman who is trying to uncover their secrets.

Miss Jessica Meechan joined the English Department this term. Her innovative classroom techniques, together with her enthusiasm for igniting a literary passion in her students, make her a wonderful addition to the thriving English department.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background in education?

I attended the University of Exeter to study English Literature. Although I didn’t initially aspire to become a teacher, I discovered my love for teaching through sports instruction at a swimming school. Realising my passion for English, I decided to pursue teacher training with a specialisation in secondary education. Before joining Stoke College, I worked in various school settings, including serving as Head of English at St. Margaret’s Prep, Gosfield.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

It was my teachers who instilled a love of reading in me at a very young age, and I wanted to inspire that same passion in others. At 17, I volunteered in India, teaching English, an experience that opened my eyes to the opportunities of teaching.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I always emphasise the human connections within the texts we study.

Communicating the universal human experience of characters within a text naturally fosters empathy and interest.

How do you create a positive and inclusive learning environment for your students?

What challenges have you encountered in your teaching career, and how did you overcome them?

I make the purpose of every lesson clear to my students, encouraging them to think beyond the immediate lesson and understand what they will take away from it.

Can you share any creative teaching methods you’ve used to engage students in the learning process?

I recognise the value of technology in teaching and believe it can be a force for good when applied appropriately. For instance, I recommend videos on YouTube that broaden students’ knowledge of a text, allowing them to connect with the story and characters on a deeper level.

What do you find most exciting about teaching English?

Igniting the spark that wasn’t there before. I love it when a student approaches me

outside of a lesson to share something that shows they have taken the experience beyond the classroom.

How do you tailor your teaching methods to meet the individual needs of your students?

As a dyslexic learner myself, I fully understand the different dimensions of learning and the impact it can have on the reception of a text. I emphasise discussion-based learning to embed ideas; students thrive when they understand the story through verbal exchange.

How do you collaborate with other teachers or departments to enhance the overall educational experience?

Reading is not at the centre of many children’s attention with the countless distractions offered by other media. With one of my Year 8 classes in a previous school, I had a number of reluctant readers. I managed to engage them in a science fiction text by showing them short film clips and gradually building up to longer periods of concentration required to manage the text.

What excites you most about joining our school community?

I am thoroughly enjoying my role at Stoke. We have a brilliant English department, and I am thrilled to be based in the beautiful main house with such inspirational views of the walled garden. I am really looking forward to the completion of our new library; it will be such a beneficial space for all.

Mrs Selina Moodie joined the English and Media Studies Department this term. Her enthusiasm for developing skills within the classroom for the world beyond is palpable and makes her the perfect addition to the Stoke College teaching body.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

While studying for my Media Studies degree at Manchester, I was given the opportunity to travel to Hronov in the Czech Republic on a one-year teaching placement. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the classroom experience; working with children, teaching, and the energy of the school setting. After I returned, I commenced my PGCE and, 25 years of teaching later, I am here at Stoke College.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to become a teacher?

Do it - it’s the best career ever!

Reflecting on your own experiences, what is a key lesson you’ve learned in your teaching career?

Never assume anything. Keep an open mind for every and anything.

What is your teaching philosophy, and how do you incorporate it into the classroom?

I really believe in the importance of preparing our young people for the world beyond school. I hope to play a part in developing students that are confident, literate, resilient, able to cope and manage themselves in situations they face within life. I am able to introduce students to inspirational literature, film, and texts that demonstrate selfmanagement, self-regulation and passion.

How do you create a positive and inclusive learning environment for your students?

I insist on kindness. If we start with kindness, we forge an environment of acceptance and support.

How do you integrate technology into your teaching to enhance the learning experience?

In media studies, there is a plethora of products we use to produce our own media products.

How do you plan to contribute to the school community beyond the classroom?

I run the Creative Writing club on a Monday lunchtime for anyone who wants to come along. I do a boarding duty once a term - I enjoyed the recent opportunity to play board games with our new immersion students.

Humanities: Creative Tools to Explain Complex Topics Mrs Winsbury-Cutts brought Play Doh into the Year 10 classroom to encourage students to carefully consider all elements of erosion, specifically focussing on Flamborough Head.

Embarking on a coastal exploration of Flamborough Head with our keen year 10 students, we unravelled the mysteries of erosional landforms—arches, stacks, and stumps—against the backdrop of Europe’s fastest eroding coast. This experiential learning aimed to decipher not only the final shapes but also the sequential evolution of these geological wonders. Witnessing the relentless forces of nature sculpting the Holderness coastline, students engaged in a tactile understanding of coastal processes.

Utilising Play-Doh as a hands-on tool, they crafted models, vividly demonstrating the formative stages of these landforms.

In just one creative lesson, our students connected theoretical knowledge with the tangible world, fostering a deeper appreciation for the delicate relationship between land and sea.

Mr Claude Cox, Mrs Aimee Winsbury-Cutts and Miss Hannah Dawson joined the Humanities Department this term. Their shared enthusiasm for creating positive learning environments and use of contemporary teaching methods demonstrates an exciting time for Humanities at Stoke.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

CCO: I wanted to work in a role where I could use my brain in areas that interested me, together with providing opportunities to develop my love for sport. After university, I tried a boring corporate role but soon discovered that it wasn’t the career path for me. I had developed a passion for teaching and embarked on a PGCE. My subject choice of history was definitely inspired by my favourite film - Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves.

AWC: Initially, I pursued a career in hospitality and events. Through this, I realised that my passion in life is working with children, and gradually I was drawn to teaching. I took a PGCE and never looked back; it is a wonderful career in which you use your passions to inspire younger minds.

How do you create a positive and inclusive learning environment for your students?

AWC: I believe that positive classroom relationships are born out of clear instructions and recognisable routines. I always ensure that my class knows what to expect from each lesson. In creating a successful positive learning environment, we find that each student is happy and confident to share their ideas. It is then our role, as teachers, to deliver engaging content in a relevant context.

I find that the small class sizes at Stoke make it easier to create an environment for learning.

HDA: And, of course, we are all Form Tutors, which is a wonderful way to play a part in the exceptional pastoral offering of Stoke.

What excites you about joining the Stoke Community?

How do you integrate technology into your teaching to enhance the learning experience?

HDA: I am a huge fan of the Visualiser. This handy bit of kit allows me to model answers before the class, instantaneously demonstrating a good structure for writing, linking up key terms with definitions, and applying diagrams and mind-mapping skills.

AWC: In geography, I am enormously grateful for the introduction of interactive maps. This is especially useful when demonstrating rising sea levels, for example.

What do you find most exciting about teaching History?

CCO: I love it when students feel a human connection between what happened many years ago and their own lives. I invite students to consider a scenario from history and ask themselves, “What would you do?”

It creates a wonderful discussion of alternative outcomes before we reveal

the actual eventuality.

How do you handle diverse learning styles and abilities in your classroom?

HDA: Within our small class sizes, we have the time and space to work with every child. The high staff-to-student ratios at Stoke College ensure that all abilities are catered for individually.

How do you plan to contribute to the school community beyond the classroom?

CCO: I am looking forward to working with the Performing Arts and English departments to develop a school-wide Declamation project. This will involve lots of interactive, experiential learning where we will retrace the footsteps of the past. And, of course, I will be assisting with the school Rugby coaching!

CCO: I am really excited about being part of the movement to turn our Directors’ ambitions for Stoke into reality. It is a very interesting time to join a school; there is a real sense of opportunity.

HDA: For me, it is having the opportunity to enhance my professional teaching practice skills and to inspire others. It is thrilling to be able to join a team that is open to growth and change.

AWC: I am really enjoying being part of a school with such a strong family feel.

It is a pleasure to come to school with such a lovely atmosphere.

Whole-School Musical Unveiled: School of Rock Prepare yourselves for a performance like no other. The Stoke College whole-school production for 2024 has been announced. Building on the incredible success of 2023’s West Side Story, our Performing and Visual Arts department are thrilled to reveal School of Rock.

This term, we are delighted to announce our annual school musical, “School of Rock” by Andrew Lloyd Webber. We have experienced an overwhelming response with 45 students auditioning. This level of interest is exciting to develop as a team.

Lead roles have been awarded to our very talented new Year 12 students: Zara W B, playing the infamous rebel teacher Dewey Finn, and Ruby B, Year 13, transitioning from backstage glory to lead us with a very classy version of Rosalie Mullins. These students are supported by Eleanor M on the bass, Hector D-S on the guitar, Stanley K on the drums, Stanley E on the keyboard, Charlotte W with her clipboard, and Poppy L with her angelic voice. Alongside many more very talented young students in the remaining cast and chorus.

This year’s show will be performed at Haverhill Arts Centre, a very loyal theatre to us that nurtures students as they take on a West End-style production in a professional setting. The music will be led by Dr. Olyver and his talented band, including Finlay M, Jordan N, Josh L, Mr. Swain, and other professional musicians.

Backstage will be run by our very own Miss Coll and her keen backstage team, led by Emily L in Year 13.

Our logo this year has been designed by Isla M in Year 13, showcasing her raw talent for design. This skill she has been able to nurture at Stoke with many opportunities to represent the school. This has grown a confidence that we celebrate and know she can take forward into her chosen design degree.

The musical is an opportunity to grow, build confidence, develop skills in leadership, communication, presentation skills, memorisation, and time management. All of these skills help enhance students’ academic study and contribute to their future development in their chosen careers.

In other areas it is important to mention LAMDA and the fantastic work happening, taught by Miss Wieland. We are thrilled to report that this year all our students have been awarded a distinction. Ellie Lytton inspired us all, achieving 100% in her final grade 8 examination. This is rare and is an

example of the calibre of students who are progressing through the Performing Arts Department.

Artwork of the Week The Artwork of the Week award celebrates the creative excellence of pupils throughout all years at Stoke College. The Award is presented at the whole-school church assembly, every week.

Each week, a selected piece of art is exhibited for Artwork of the Week. In our whole school church assemblies, the winners announced receive 25 house points and their certificate, to celebrate and share the talented young artists across all years.

This term so far, some of our winners include Emily L in Year 13, Lily C in Year 9 and Freddie S in Year 7. Emily showcased her eye for precision and detail in her carefully crafted floral paper collage created for her A-Level Personal Investigation over her summer holidays. Lily was awarded Artwork of the Week for the second time, for her wonderful acrylic and acetate self-portrait.

And Freddie, for his symmetrical high contrast black and white reverse pattern, demonstrating strong ability and accuracy in mapping out patterns.

What’s Been Happening in Hambling?

Art education at Stoke College cultivates critical thinking, creativity and communication skills whilst developing cultural understanding. Miss Coll reports on the term’s key focus areas and the exciting results produced.

Aprons are back on, and the Hambling art room is full of life with exciting new projects for KS3 following the return from Summer holidays. Students in Years 7, 8 & 9 have started the year engaging in new thematic investigations exploring illustration, painting, collage and printmaking.

Year 7 students have been exploring Shape, Form and Pattern, understanding how to create reverse, rotate and repeat patterns. Each student created optical illusions with their black and white reverse patterns, and they now explore directions of light and mark making. Year 7, can you remember the difference between shape and form? And what does monochromatic mean?

To start off this year, Year 8 students have learnt the three techniques of collage; Remove, Replace and Shatter. Surreal compositions have been explored by all in the creation of their ‘Surreal Being’ collage which is now turned into a monoprint.

Ask your child, why is it called a monoprint?

Year 9 students are exploring self-portraits this term and have completed their acrylic on acetate paintings, full of expression and colour. Now, students are working on pen crosshatching drawings to understand proportions and the shadows and highlights that fall on the face. Who can remember the ‘Grid Method Golden Rule’? And how can we show shadows using cross-hatching?

Reasons to Sing: Joining the Vibrant Stoke Choir

Participation in the Stoke College choir is not just about singing; it’s about nurturing a deep appreciation for music. Choristers develop a rich musical understanding that will stay with them throughout their lives.

This term has been exceptionally rewarding for the Stoke College choir. Our performance of “I Have a Dream” by ABBA at the Harvest festival was a highlight, showcasing our dedication and musical prowess. Currently, we’re gearing up for the Bury St. Edmunds Lights Switch On and the Stoke College Carol Service, where we’ll enchant the audience with a harmonious blend of traditional carols and modern favourites like “White Winter Hymnal.”

Printmaking Professional Leads Art Workshop

This half term, GCSE and A-Level Art & Design students were welcomed by the learning team at the Sudbury gallery, Gainsborough House.

This half term, GCSE and A-Level Art & Design students were welcomed by the learning team at the local Sudbury gallery and home of renowned artist, Thomas Gainsborough.

Able to explore the life and works of the artist himself, students also visited the temporary exhibition by other local and contemporary artist Maggi Hambling. Do you recognise that name? That’s right! It is of course the name sake of the Art & Design classroom, Hambling.

As well as interactive gallery sessions, students enjoyed the mesmerising wonders of camera obscura, and created their own pinhole cameras. The highlight for all was the professional printmaker led dry-point etching workshop, in the beautiful studios of Gainsborough’s House. Exploring new techniques and processes is key to students’ personal creative development in the subject and beyond, and this was a fantastic opportunity enjoyed by all. Miss Coll was delighted to see all students challenge themselves in a new and skilful type of printmaking.

Sports News from the Stoke College Pavilion The benefits in sports participation at school are numerous from physical fitness and personal growth to stress relief and social interaction. The Stoke College sports department celebrates a successful half-term of growth and development of skills that will take students beyond the sports field.

Our boys worked hard both in attack and defence but struggled to deal with the physicality brought by our opponents at times. However, we stuck at the task and Oskar M managed to score a fantastic try in the corner. We were overpowered in this game overall and learnt some very important lessons along on the way which Mr Evans and Mr Khan hoped would spur the boys on in their next game.

3rd October U15 Rugby vs Thetford Grammar

20th/27th September U13 Rugby vs Finborough & RHS We journeyed to Stowmarket to face Finborough on the 20th September and Finborough again together with RHS on the 27th for our first U13 rugby fixtures of the year. In the week some of our students experienced their first ever taste of a competitive fixture and contact rugby, performing extremely well against some experienced opposition. The boys were trailing 40-0 at half time before a rousing team talk by Mr Khan led to us scoring 4 tries in the second and eventually losing by 50 points to 20.

On the 27th we returned to Finborough for a triangular fixture against our hosts and RHS. The boys showed a huge improvement from the previous week’s games. We came close to forcing a result against the hosts before narrowly losing 30-20 whilst we desperately hung on for a draw against RHS before conceding a try in the final seconds to lose by a meagre 5 points! Both Mr Evans and Mr Khan were immensely proud of the progress, grit and determination the boys had shown in these fixtures! A special mention must go out in these fixtures to all of those students who made their débuts and also to Freddie F in Year 8 for excellent gameplay and leadership.

20th/27th September U13 Hockey vs Finborough As well as rugby we ventured to Finborough for two weeks of hockey fixtures, and as with the boys the girls also showed huge levels of improvement across the fixtures, we narrowly lost both games where on a different day, especially in the second set of games the result could have been completely different as we created numerous chances but could not convert!

U15 Rugby vs Ipswich High Our U15 boys team hosted Ipswich High in what was expected to be a tough encounter after some physical games against them over the last few years.

The boys looked to right the wrongs of their previous performance against Ipswich High and boy did they! Boosted by three of our Spanish immersion students, we burst out of the blocks and quickly scored a couple of tries and never looked back! We were ruthless in attack and played to our strengths superbly with the two Nicolas’, two of our immersion students, Harvey O and Joe L amongst others crossing the try line as we ended up 60-20 victors.

11th October U13 Rugby vs Thetford Grammar We welcomed Thetford Grammar School on a warm October afternoon. The Stoke boys, cheered on by a number of our parents again, showed huge levels of improvement from their first fixtures and looked really good in attack with some excellent rucking, ruck speed and running from Freddie F, Hayden O and Ted O in particular. The game ebbed and flowed with both teams exchanging scores on a regular basis as we finished half time at 4 tries apiece. Stoke just could not match the clinical nature of our opponents as we came close to scoring on a number of occasions before narrowly losing out on a first victory of the season. Our man of the match here by a country mile was Ted O in Year 8 who showed an aggressive side in both attack, scoring a try and also in defence that we had not seen before whilst being cheered on by Mr O on the touchline, a big well done Ted!

Mrs Connelly has taught students the importance reducing food waste and using the bounty of our own orchards in this delicious autumnal chutney.

Stoke College Seasonal Apple Chutney

Ingredients 3-4 large bramley apples 1 inch piece of ginger 75g brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 120ml vinegar 1/4 teaspoon fennel seeds 1/4 teaspoon nigella seeds Optional chilli or chilli seeds

Method - preheat oven to 180°c Grate the ginger and chop the apples. Place all the ingredients into a saucepan and simmer gently for 20 minutes stirring often. When the apples have broken down and the mixture is slightly caramelised it is ready. Pour into a clean, sterilised jar.
