This Port O Call issue is no different.

My family relocated from Bakersfield when I was nine. It was to be for only two years, but my mother loved Stockton and didn’t want to leave. “It’s green up here.” My Dad, a dispatcher, found work with AW Hayes Trucking. As teenagers, my siblings and I worked in the cannery sorting tomatoes, pitting pears, and working the seamers. It was hard work, especially since I had a tendency towards motion sickness–nothing like the smells and motion of sorting belts. My father-in-law transferred here from Los Angeles with Diamond Walnut. Like many families, our lives were sustained by what comes out of the land.

San Joaquin County’s top ten commodities are grapes (wine), milk, almonds, walnuts, cattle, tomatoes, cherries, hay, potatoes, and melons, amounting to around $2.1 Billion in annual sales. For 33 years, the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce has recognized leaders in agriculture. Congratulations to the impressive inductees to the San Joaquin County Ag Hall of Fame for their provision of food, employment, and philanthropy. They have stood steadfast in both the face of adversity and times of plenty.

Ag makes me think about “going green.” Did you know that your Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce is the only Chamber in the country to receive the prestigious 2014 Golden Arrow Award for Overall Excellence in Product Stewardship by the California Product Stewardship Council for our Green Team San Joaquin Project? The purpose of the Green Team San Joaquin is to create a nexus between commerce and environment and to enhance the delivery of Chamber services and to address economic, environmental, and quality of life issues. By assisting businesses in “going green,” they will not only reduce their costs of doing business, but it will also help the environment. Sixteen Chamber members are Green Certified using the rigorous process set by the California Green Business Network.

In light of the devastation in Texas, I took a look at the Houston NW Chamber of Commerce website before the flood waters had receded. They had information right away on reopening businesses and emergency resources. Your Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce would be at the ready in the event of a catastrophe–as it is every day, working on your behalf, and offering resources to support your enterprise. Do not underestimate the worth of membership in the Chamber.

LEADERSHIP STOCKTON BY: TIMM QUINN LEADERSHIP DYNAMICS SESSION Session Sponsor: San Joaquin County Office of Education Leadership Stockton kicked off the 2017-2018 class with a successful day-long Leadership Dynamics session hosted at the San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE). The goal of the session was for participants to learn more about themselves and their classmates through a variety of teambuilding exercises, activities, and discussions.

Thank you to Rob Kroff, Venture On Challenge Course facilitator, for leading the class through a handful of exercises that kept the group moving, laughing, and getting to know each other better.

After lunch, the class had a lively discussion on core values for their group with Chris Stevens, President of Summit Solutions Consulting, LS Class of 2007. Then they brainstormed some needs for Stockton. That lead into the class breaking into two groups to start brainstorming for their class community service project to present at the September retreat.

The class ended the day with a mixer hosted by the Leadership Stockton Alumni Association at Valley Brew. It was a great way for the new class members to meet some alumni and see that they are joining a bigger group of like-minded individuals.

Special thanks to the team at the SJCOE: Superintendent James Mousalimas, Kelly Fry, and Rob Kroff. Thank you to Chris Stevens for all your help with the core values exercise and the project structure presentation.

Next month, follow the class of 2017 as their community project at the Leadership Retreat at Camp Tuolumne Trails on Sept. 22–23.
