Under the leadership of Richard Aschieris, Port Director and PastPresident of the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce and the

Port Commissioners, our inland port is thriving. The Port is also philanthropic and serves community nonprofits, which says a lot about their priorities and commitment to Stockton.

I am personally grateful for the men and women who unload and load ships, because my family includes proud longshore workers—my brother-in-law David Wade, who followed in his father’s footsteps, my nephew Sean McCombs, and my son-in-law Anthony Sukurski whose father and grandfather chose the same work. It can be dangerous work, but fulfilling and a good living.

The Port of Stockton plays host to the 20th Annual State of the City proudly sponsored by your GSCC. Just the drive out to the shed is eye-opening and a reminder of the impact our port has on the health of commerce in Stockton. The State of the City is the highlight of the year for Stockton and the opportunity to hear from Michael Tubbs, Mayor of the City of Stockton, and the State of the Port address from Sylvester Aguilar, Port of Stockton Commission Chairman. At this writing, I haven’t heard the vision of Mayor Tubbs but I’m looking forward to hearing from him for we are all in this together and collaboration is key to making things happen.

we all know, Stockton gets a bad rap out there in the universe. But those of us who live and work here know differently. This isn’t turning a blind eye to the challenges. We face problems such as homelessness, literacy and health straight on, often we are a step ahead of other cities in the country.

Adam Cheshire is a Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce Leadership Stockton Class of 2013 Alumni. I was in the same class and one of our projects was to totally re-do two rooms at the Stockton Shelter for the Homeless. Adam was the most passionate class member for the project, so it came as no surprise when he was hired as the Executive Director of the Shelter. Adam is now the new Homelessness Tzar for San Joaquin County.

This is a perfect picture of what the GSCC Leadership Stockton program does for our community—it builds leaders. The deadline for applying for the next class is drawing near—are you the leader our community is looking for? Apply!

This year has flown by. Next month will be the last time I will sit at my laptop trying to come up with something to say. LEADERSHIP STOCKTON BY: TIMM QUINN Leadership Stockton: Education Session Leadership Level Sponsor: Financial Center Credit Union Special Thanks To: San Joaquin County Office of Education Education plays a vital role in the future economic prosperity of San Joaquin County, so a hands-on look at education was the perfect way to begin the day.

The day began with the class divided among 10 schools throughout Stockton. They spent the morning shadowing the principal, learning about their particular school, and their successes and challenges.

At lunch time, the Leadership Stockton class gathered at the San Joaquin County Office of Education for the remainder of the day.

A working lunch covered some of the questions and revelations the class had based on their school site visits.

After lunch, the class got a guided tour of the San Joaquin Regional Conservation Corps and all the great things they do out at the Office of Education and the community. Following the tour Janine Kaeslin, Assistant Superintendent of County Operated Schools and Programs, San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE), welcomed the class and gave a quick overview of the SJCOE mission and what a County Office of Education does.

Next up, the class heard from Head Start of San Joaquin Director Leticia Sida, Director. Then they got a treat and heard all about the Discovery Challenge Academy. Two Discovery Academy students joined the class and shared their story, what an amazing program.

After a short break the class heard from Randy Olson, Director and Monica Filoso, Director, on Special Education and all the services SJCOE offers for those with special needs. Matthew Wright, Instructor; Venture Academy and some students spoke next on the Venture Academy Family of Schools and about their mock trial team. What an impressive group of students! The day ended with a presentation on Information Technology and Business Services from Scott Anderson, Deputy Superintendent, Business Services and Ed Babakhan, Division Director.

And of course, you cannot mention the economic success of the city without talking about its economic heart and host of the event, the Port of Stockton, which in its 85th year is only growing more successful. Port Director Richard Aschieris called 2017 the Port’s “best calendar year in terms of total tonnage and ship calls,” adding that this allows them to generate “lots of jobs” for the city, which is their largest goal in the medium and long term.

In the last year, the Port spent $15 million on local businesses, providing things like office equipment, consulting services, and contracts with businesses like Dillon & Murphy, a Lodi engineering firm working with the Port to improve infrastructure on Navy Drive. Aschieris called investing in local business the “most effective way to invest in the community,” which includes not just Stockton but all of San Joaquin County.

Port Commission Chairman Sylvester Aguilar will be delivering a State of the Port, updating the community on their recent successes and their plans for the city going forward. Aschieris expressed enthusiasm at his partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, and loves that the event gives people the opportunity to get a rare glimpse at what goes on at the Port on a day-to-day basis.

But while the Port of Stockton is invaluable to the city, it’s the people who make it what it is. After all, without local businesses and a growing economy, it would have nothing to ship! That’s why the event’s greatest emphasis is on the community, and bringing together the people who care about Stockton’s future, to discuss how to make it even brighter.

When asked for final thoughts, Mayor Tubbs offered this hopeful note to leave on: “It’s an exciting time to live, work, and play in Stockton. Locally and across the nation, people are starting to take notice and talk about the good things happening here. Stockton is becoming a model of how to reinvent a city by building upon our strengths and finding innovative ways to tackle old challenges.”

So make sure to be at the State of the City on May 24 so you, too, can be a part of the city’s reinvention and make Stockton the best city it can be.

The City of Stockton Economic Development Department is committed to creating employment opportunities by attracting new businesses, maintaining a healthy business environment for existing businesses, and assisting entrepreneurs in developing a successful business.

The Micro Loan Program is available to businesses located within Stockton city limits. Applicants must have a for-profit enterprise, show ability to repay debt and have history of meeting financial obligations. Business consulting is required and the business must create or retain at least one job.

The Facade Improvement Program assists property owners in making exterior, cosmetic improvements to commercial property. Funds are granted in the form of a loan, with a lien placed on the building, which is forgiven after five years if the property is kept free of graffiti and blight.

The Emergency Grant Program assists both business and property owners in financial need with alleviating code violations where the health and safety of employees and/or the public are endangered. Funds are provided in the form of a grant with no repayment expected.
