Additionally, we hold monthly Mixers to allow our members to have a chance to meet and greet at our local member businesses.

Speaking of Mixers, we had a wonderful Diversity Mixer last month at the Haggin Museum where all the various Chambers in the community could get together and celebrate the Christmas Spirit. As usual the turnout was well supported by the Community and donated Gifts were collected for less fortunate children through the Toys 4 Tots program.

Our Leadership Stockton 2020 Class has selected their project, which will focus on the revitalization of the Micke Grove Zoo. The project will include renovating the children’s play area, theater, main stage, bleachers, new picnic tables, and a new ZooMobile. This is an ambitious plan that costs money! Having said that, the 2020 class has to raise money, and you can directly help the cause.

participate in their year-long Leadership Stockton Program.

Since the program’s inception, nearly 900 members of the community have served the city of Stockton and the greater

San Joaquin County through the program’s curriculum. This year’s cohort members represent a broad variety of industries and backgrounds.

Such diversity will help the group move fluidly through the year-long service commitment, as their collective abilities will provide a well-rounded skill-set and perspective for the group.

In addition, the cohort participates in team building, consensus building, and other leadership development sessions. The hallmark of the Leadership Stockton Program is the cohort’s community service project. Each class generates a number of dynamic fundraisers to garner funds for a project that they choose together. The 2019-2020 cohort was ecstatic to adopt the Micke Grove Zoo as their year-long effort.

Historically known to the community of Stockton, the Micke Grove Zoo and Regional Park was a gift to the people of San Joaquin County from former farmer-turned-philanthropist William Micke and his wife, Julia Harrison Micke. Their legacy lives on in the beautiful oak-forested park that originally opened its gates in 1938. The zoo itself houses amphibians, mammals, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates. The zoo has also been pivotal in an extremely successful breeding program over the years.

Micke Grove Zoo has successfully bred nine snow leopards and helped bring some species back from the brink of extinction.

Each year, over 100,000 visitors enjoy this wonderful gift to the community of San Joaquin County, as it continues to be a local attraction for generations of families.

“I think everyone in the class had memories of the Micke Grove Zoo as children, and we wanted to ensure that tradition for future generations.” Kristi Capra, 2019-2020 cohort member said.

“We wanted a project that we could actively participate in building,” Shayne Brown, 2019-2020 cohort member shared; “It’s one thing to raise money and write a check, it’s another to actually participate in the demolition, design, and beautification process.”

Since this year’s cohort met back in August, they have been moving at full-speed to facilitate the project. Class member Mario Vasquez of San Joaquin Delta College pledged every Saturday and Sunday morning in the month of November to demolition of the dilapidated amphitheater.

During the month of December, the class participated in “Zoo Lights,” another zoo event where the park is decorated for the holidays.

On Feb. 8, 2020, the class will continue a tradition started by a previous Leadership Stockton cohort and host the 8th annual Leadership Stockton bowling fundraiser. This year, the fundraiser will be held at West Lane Bowl between the hours of 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Individuals, or teams of five players, can reserve lanes to play in 3 different heats throughout the day.

The fundraiser will include multiple raffle prizes, drink tickets, and lunch!

The class is also currently selling tickets for two different vacation packages. 100 tickets will be sold for a week-long trip to Palm Springs, CA, which will also include a $500 cash prize. The winner of the Palm Springs trip will be pulled and announced in February 2020.

The second trip is a Costa Rican getaway, with airfare for four included! 300 tickets will be sold for the Costa Rica trip, and the winner will be pulled and announced in May of 2020.
