Stockton
Since the 1940s, Stockton has seen major commercial and residential developments. The farthest inland seaport on the West Coast has maintained strong trade relationships with 55 countries and exports over 3.7 million metric tons of American products annually. Stockton also supports very active and world-renowned talent including a civic theatre, symphony, opera, and chorale groups. The Haggin museum is rich in collections and exhibits that tell the stories of local and California history, as well as works by late 19th and early 20th century artists.
This diverse community includes a large Chinese, Mexican, Japanese, and Filipino population, which is reflected by the street names, architecture, and in the faces and heritage of its citizens. Throughout the year, multi-cultural festivals reflect that diversity in the microcosm that Stockton has become for the world.

Bob Hope (Fox) Theatre
DOWNTOWN FEATURE
The Bob Hope Theatre, originally opened in 1930 as the Fox California, stands as one of Stockton’s most treasured landmarks and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built on the site of Stockton’s very first theatre, the venue was designed as a true movie palace of its era, with a two-story rotunda and circular mezzanine that welcome guests into its lavish interior. The 2,500-seat auditorium is framed by a rose-colored proscenium arch adorned with gold, copper, and silver stenciled stars, a gilded carved face at its center, and dramatic red curtains cascading to the stage floor. Plush rows of redcushioned seats slope gently toward a 90-footwide stage, while balconies and carved wooden lofts provide sweeping views from above.
The theatre’s ornate details include gold-leafed, eight-foot-tall etched mirrored panels, beautifully preserved chandeliers, and intricately carved wooden brackets outlining the ceiling. Below the stage, the lower level once housed band rooms, choir rooms, and dressing areas, a nod to its original function as both a movie house and live performance venue. After closing in 1973, the theatre was rescued from decline through a restoration effort funded in part by Alex G. Spanos, who requested it be renamed for his close friend Bob Hope.

Reopened in 2004 with a performance by Jerry Seinfeld, the renovation preserved historic elements while adding modern upgrades like a 1,200-square-foot Italian marble mosaic floor in the lobby and state-of-theart sound. Among its most unique features is a fully restored 1928 Robert Morton theatre organ—originally built for Seattle’s Fox Theatre—which now plays before select films thanks to Friends of the Fox and the Sierra Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society.
Today the Bob Hope Theatre continues to host concerts, comedy, Broadway shows, and classic film screenings, carrying forward its legacy as a jewel of Stockton’s arts and entertainment scene while transporting audiences back to the glamour of the golden age of cinema.

HOW STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA JOINED THE MARVEL UNIVERSE
What do you get when you mix a local radio personality, a legendary comic book publisher, and a popular comic book superhero team? You get an epic moment that will live forever in comic book history.
"The one great truth about the Fantastic Four — is that we take care of our own!"
Unlike the heroes of DC, the costumed protagonists of Marvel Comics tend to reside in factual cities; many of them residing in the boroughs of New York City. However, the Fantastic Four—made up of Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (Human Torch) & Ben Grimm (The Thing)—resided in the fictional “Central City, CA.”
Some fans wondered why this supergroup was given a fictional spot instead of an actual city. At the same time, comic book shops were

looking for opportunities to get an icon in their industry to visit them for the benefit of their customers. These two comic-focused mindsets resided within two Stocktonians; two individuals who would go on to leave an impact on our resilient city. Those two men are Al Greco and Joe Field
1986 would mark the 25th anniversary of Marvel Comics. Within the walls of Greco's own comic shop Al's Comics, the idea of getting Marvel Comics Publisher & comic book forefather Stan Lee to Stockton was born. A petition was conjured up to get over 300 true blue Marvel and Stan Lee fans to sign. Greco sent off the fully signed petition while Field—

working promotions for KJOY-AM Radio— pushed the idea of getting Marvel to name Stockton the home of the Fantastic Four.
The local media attention led to Stockton City Council joining in and pushing forward a resolution that Stockton should be known as the home of the Fantastic Four. The news went national when the Los Angeles Times wrote a story about the proposal, followed by a KCRA News 3 report from Rich Ibarra. Eventually, both the petition signatures and the city resolution news made their way to Stan Lee—and Lee was fully onboard.
On February 26, 1986, Stan “The Man” lee stood on the steps of Stockton City Hall for a special ceremony and made it official. The Fantastic Four comic issue #296 would be the first issue to reference Stockton as the foursome’s home. Stockton would go on to be featured in future Fantastic Four stories Marvels: Eye of the Camera Vol. 11 (Dec. 2008) and The Fantastic Four Season 1 Vol. 11 (October 2011).
