Welcome to Hempshaw Lane

Viaduct Housing Partnership are delighted to be working with Lane End to create a new residential neighbourhood, nestled in and around the Battersby Hat Factory in Offerton.

The former Battersby Hat Works is located off Hempshaw Lane in Offerton. The new neighbourhood will see the conversion of the two most significant retained structures fronting Hempshaw Lane, of the former Hat Works, including the Water Tower, and the construction of new family homes behind the retained elements. There will be 144 dwellings providing affordable and market sale homes across the site.

which gutted most of the building, destroying enormous stocks of straw and felt hats which were part of the working area. It was rebuilt and the business continued to thrive; at one time Battersby’s became one of the largest hat manufacturers in Britain with an international trade. During the re-build, a water tower was added to the factory.

The factory is the last remaining example of Stockport’s hat making tradition. Battersby Hats was the trading name of Battersby and Co, a hat manufacturer of Stockport. The firm once had capacity of 12,000 hats per week but it declined in the second half of the twentieth century and merged with other hat manufacturers in 1966 before hat production ceased altogether in 1997. The building was hit by a devastating fire in 1906 sales@viaducthousing.com

In 1907, Battersbys bought a second factory in Conty, near Arras in northern France, where they lost sons Edgar, in the 1917 Battle of Arras, and Ernest, factory manager.

The company merged with Christy and Co Ltd and T, & W, Leeds Ltd, both of Stockport, and J. Moores & Sons Ltd, of Denton, to form the Association of British Hat Manufacturers, as trading became challenging. After a gradual decline, the Association of British Hat Manufacturers ceased in 1997. The factory was then used as the first Hat Works museum before the exhibitions were moved to the neighbouring Wellington Mill in 2000. An archaeological investigation was carried out on the site between May 2019 and Feb 2020 by Salford Archaeology and the report can be viewed upon request. The investigation found the foundation beds for a steam engine, that would have once powered the hat works, beneath the floor of a 20th century electricity substation. Viaduct Housing Partnership are stepping in and transforming the site, creating desirable homes and restoring historical buildings for future generations.

These high quality homes are located in a highly desirable postal code benefiting from the hustle and bustle of Stockport Town Centre and being close to the tranquillity of the Peak District. It’s not hard to see why it’s a popular location to lay down roots, with its fantastic restaurants, bars and shops stretching down the A6, fantastic schools and excellent transport links. sales@viaducthousing.com
