In his early years on the Michigan Court of Appeals, Judge John Fitzgerald (later to become Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court) displayed an illuminating style of opinion writing. He wrote in a way to generate reader interest, personalizing the parties and avoiding the obfuscation and redundancy plaguing much judicial writing of the time.
