Finding Our Way Through the Valleys and Hills --Rev. Larry Hansen, BCC, CT (Ret.) In the middle of the night on January 31st, I got up to do what old men do in the middle of the night. I had socks on, but unfortunately, they weren't the non-slip kind, and I slipped, and fell, suffering fairly-serious injuries to my back and ribs. I spent a week in the hospital and have spent the last couple of months transitioning from convalescence to recovery. During this period, I've had a lot of time to reflect as I lay on my back and stared out the window. I began to realize that my life had changed markedly. The doctors and therapists have warned me not to strain my back in any way and to avoid all heavy lifting in the future. The good part is that I have a ready excuse when people ask me to help them move. The tough part for me is that I will no longer be able to do respite care for hospice patients. I won't be able to help people with their activities of daily life, nor will I be able to assist nurses and CNA's with any physical patient work. So in a sense, I'm in a new country in my life and I need a new map. Reflecting on this, I remembered the words of the late psychiatrist and author Dr. Scott Peck, who wrote that one of the problems that we have when moving to a new country in our life, we try to hold on to our old map. This makes about as much sense as trying to travel from the German-French border to Berlin with a map of France in your hand. In my own case, I've had to accept and embrace that I'm in a new country in my life, and I can only hurt myself by attempting to use my

old map. As a hospice and hospital Chaplain, I've walked with many people over the years as they had to embrace new realities and walk in new countries. Now, I have the opportunity to apply those wise words that I formerly used with others to myself. As I have made the transition from care provider to care receiver, I've been fortunate to have good guides on the journey. I've learned at a personal level that we who have the privilege of offering care to others are not taking care of them, but rather one of us who's a little farther up the mountain and whose view may be a little better, as my late father would say. Thomas Merton once wrote that a priest learns humility in the school of labor and of sorrow. I would append that to include all of us on the journey of life. As one of my physician colleagues who is a devout Muslim used to remark, "Allah gives everyone life, but sometimes with the more life comes the more pain: this is the way." I don't understand this as a "downer;" rather, I see it as a great wisdom teaching. That's certainly been true for me. As we progress through this Easter season, let us all remember that our rejoicing is the product of our walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Lent into a new season of our lives.

ICONS ALL AROUND - a workshop designed by Mother Monica Kennedy,

Pastor, St. Charles of Brazil Dates: Friday, May 7th - May 14th - May 21st * 7:00 p.m. via ZOOM Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84196681909? pwd=bUVJYm1xNWlra05UQTNZK0IrUDRaQT09 Meeting ID: 841 9668 1909 Passcode: 694973 This workshop will focus on the contrast between traditional church Icons and those that offer a more modern, personal perspective. We will view and discuss traditional Icons along with Icons personally contributed by group members. We will explore why certain Icons attract and hold special significance for us. We will ask the questions: What is it that I see in this Icon that holds my interest? What is the difference between praying with an Icon and simply viewing one? Time for group prayer will be a valuable part of this series. Please direct any questions or for further information, contact Alice Jo Weaver at alicejo.weaver@yahoo.com All are welcome!
