CINCO DE MAYO
MAY 5TH, SUNDAY
THE HISTORICAL ROOT OF CINCO DE MAYO
Historically, Cinco de Mayo, or the Fifth of May, is a day of remembrance that holds particular significance in Mexican history. It marks the heroic victory of the Mexican Army over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla during the FrancoMexican War. Contrary to common misconception, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day (which is celebrated on September 16). Instead, it signifies unity, pride, and the triumph of the underdog.
While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, the jubilant celebrations are a testament to the indomitable Mexican spirit. The date is observed in the state of Puebla, where the battle took place, with historical reenactments, parades, and special services. However, in the US, it has evolved into a widespread occasion to celebrate Mexican culture and identity, with festivities ranging from educational events to street fairs and music festivals.
MOTHER’S DAY
SUNDAY
MAY 12TH
The second Sunday in May is Mother’s Day in most countries.
This day is observed in many countries in Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia and Americas, but the tradition to celebrate the holiday is native to the USA. Although world-wide celebration of Mother’s Day is influenced by different traditions, they are all common in origin. The very first Mother’s Day was celebrated in 1908 in the USA, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her mother.
Then she started a campaign to establish Mother’s Day as a national holiday, and later as international. The U.S Congress passed a law on May 8, 1914, that designated the second Sunday in May to be Mother’s Day. The holiday was proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson on the next day as the holiday when all American citizens raised the flag in honor of the mothers, whose sons had died in war.
Mother’s Day became very popular in other countries. The holiday includes churchgoing, distribution of flowers (carnations are symbolic flowers) and family dinners. More than 80 countries around the world celebrate Mother’s Day according to the American traditions.
PRAYER FOR MOTHER’S DAY
Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you give life and care for your Church. Bless these women, as we celebrate this day in their honor. May they be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor and appreciate them with a spirit of profound respect. May the example of Mary, mother of Jesus, inspire them to live their vocation as Christian mothers and call their children to faith. Guide and protect them in challenging times and help them to continue to trust in you all the days of their life.
Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
MEMORIAL DAY
MONDAY
MAY 27TH
National Memorial Day in the USA is celebrated on the last Monday in May. All men and women, who gave their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces, are commemorated on this day. National Memorial Day is formally known as Decoration Day, the day that commemorated the Union and Confederate soldiers, who died during the American Civil War. Later the day extended to honor all American soldiers, who died while in the military service. Traditionally, the flag of the USA is raised briskly to the top of the flagstaff, then it is lowered to the half-staff position. This position is chosen in remembrance of those people, who died for their country. At noon the flag is raised to full-staff as the symbol that the memory of dead soldiers is being raised by the living. Their sacrifice was not in vain, that is why we rise up in their honor and continue fighting for liberty and justice. Thousands of parades are held during National Memorial Day in all large and small cities. Most parades feature marching bands, servicemen, veterans and military vehicles from various wars also participate.
A MEMORIAL DAY PRAYER FOR THOSE LOST SOUL’S
Gracious God,
On this Memorial Day, we pray for those who courageously laid down their lives for the cause of freedom. May the examples of their sacrifice inspire in us the selfless love of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Bless the families of our fallen troops and fill their homes and their lives with Your strength and peace. In union with people of goodwill of every nation, embolden us to answer the call to work for peace and justice, and thus, seek an end to violence and conflict around the globe. We ask this through your name.
Amen!
