Wisdom From Our Pastor

The Feast of All Saints is a time, not just for admiration, but for gratitude. The saints of the Church, as well as the saints in our lives, passed onto us the awesome heritage of faith in God, endless hope and love in action.

Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens is a beautiful park in Maui, with exhibits that honor the cultures that made modern Hawaii. There are gardens, and houses, in the style of the Chinese, Japanese, New England, Portuguese, Native Hawaiian, Korean, Puerto Rican and Filipino people. By the exhibit of a typical Japanese house is a bronze statue of a man and woman dressed for their work in fishing. A plaque stands in front of the statue – placed by the descendants of the first Japanese immigrants.

It reads: The tears of our gratitude transcend time to mingle with the tears of their sacrifice.

This is also our story of gratitude with the Church’s saints – the blessed. We received from those who have gone before us, who passed to us the treasure of the faith: One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic. They passed on the sacraments and the creeds, the devotions and the joy, and the final gift of hope. The faith passed to us doesn’t answer every question of life. Instead, it shines the image Jesus into our minds and hearts, and gives us the assurance of the 2 reading: nd

Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we shall be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when it is revealed we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

Now we are the saints who pass the faith to another generation. It is portrayed beautifully in the tapestries of John Nava, in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, in Los Angeles – the saints of many ages and places moving with us in time and memory.

The Daily Prayer of Saint Teresa Dear Jesus, help me to spread your fragrance everywhere I go. Flood my soul with your spirit and love. Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly that all my life may only be a radiance of You. Shine through me and be so in me that every soul I come in contact with may feel Your presence in my soul. Let them look up and see no longer me but only Jesus.

Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as you shine, so to shine as to be a light to others. Amen.
