The Beauty of the In-Between I recently visited Switzerland for the international Travel Classics conference, and to produce a feature story (page 66) on the diverse cantons of Ticino and Luzern—home to the majestic Lake Lucerne. While riding Swiss trains from one ridiculously scenic place to the next, I was reminded of how powerful and memorable our “in-between” moments can be, both in travel and in life.

The lure of the Swiss rail system is not just the landscapes (iconic alpine peaks, rustic farm villages, stunning lakes), but the time and space this kind of travel allows for reflection. In today’s fastpaced world, we quickly skip from one experience to another, posting on social media in real time, often without processing what just occurred (guilty as charged!). But during this incredible week, I had many conversations with editors and writers about the art of slow travel, which helped me pump the breaks and fully immerse myself in the charming Swiss surroundings. On the train, I journaled, chatted with seat mates, and blissfully did nothing but marvel at the passing terrain. And what I discovered was surprising. After appreciating these in-between moments, the action spilled into how I experienced the destinations: a meaningful conversation with a stranger in an elevator at the Mandarin Oriental Palace Luzern, laughing with an Uber driver while practicing my subpar (more like five-word) German, and stopping to watch the magical swans shake a literal tail feather as I walked along Lake Lucerne—without my iPhone, gasp!

CANADA In Manitoba’s far north, Churchill delivers rare encounters across three distinct realms.

Churchill may be one of the Arctic’s most reachable frontiers, but its adventures are anything but ordinary. While the subarctic landscape is famous for its quiet, frozen beauty, there are three ways to experience the North at its most pulse-pounding.

BY WATER The paramount way to meet Churchill’s beluga whales is at sea level. Each July and August, as the sea ice fractures and drifts out into Hudson Bay, the coastline comes alive. Nearly 60,000 beluga whales gather along the western edge of the bay, with roughly 6,000 funneling into the Churchill River estuary. Paddle low in a kayak as white forms glide just beneath the surface, their clicks and whistles carrying through the hull. Nicknamed sea canaries, they are notoriously social, often rising just inches from your kayak to investigate their visitor with a curious, dark-eyed gaze.

BY LAND While many travelers see polar bears from the safety of a highclearance tundra vehicle, the ultimate thrill is found on your own two feet. Guided walking safaris bring guests across the rugged subarctic terrain in what’s considered the pinnacle of land-based adventure. Hike through vibrant summer fireweed or over the first dust of autumn snow. There’s a heart-thumping humility that comes from standing on the same ground as a polar bear, under the careful watch of expert guides.

THE RIVER Less Traveled AmaWaterways begins a new adventure along the Magdalena in Colombia.

WHILE floating down Colombia’s storied Rio Magdalena, the lush, untouched riverbanks feel a million miles away from civilization.

The only reminders that there is indeed human life nearby are the occasional fishermen who paddle by in hand-carved canoes, or the barely audible cheers from shore when we pass a village or a lone clapboard stilted home, its residents scurrying to shore to wave and get a glimpse of our river ship.

In today’s hyperconnected world, it’s refreshing to feel so off the grid yet still be welcomed by people who, until AmaWaterways launched small ship river cruises here last year, had in many cases never seen such a vessel or even encountered foreign travelers.

The solitude and warm reception are just the first of many surprises on this christening sailing of AmaMelodia, which joined AmaMagdalena as only the second ship to cruise a river that was once a crucial artery for commerce and travel through the heart of Colombia.

With a capacity of 64 guests, AmaMelodia feels deeply personal and distinctly Colombian, from the kind, hospitable staff to the locally sourced furnishings and artwork to the mix of local and international dishes at every meal. (My favorite: the iconic bandeja paisa with rice, ground beef, fried egg, sweet plantains, chorizo, and avocado.) Extra-special touches include private balconies in every cabin, along with the Sun Deck featuring a temperature-controlled pool, colorful rockers, and cushioned loungers.

I realize just how special this sailing is on the very first night, when I wake at 2 a.m., roll over to watch the river drift past my window and spot a cayman slipping through the darkness, followed a short time later by a bobbing otter. In the days ahead as we explore the river on smaller excursion boats, we encounter more caymans, beautiful birds, water buffalo, and howler monkeys.

We make a total of five port calls, each one providing the true definition of cultural immersion. Local guides lead us into San Basilio de Palenque, a village founded by runaway slaves in the 1600s that to this day retains its own Palenque language and Africa-based culture and music. In the remote island town of Santa Barbara de Pinto, residents put on a Cumbia dance show for us, and while in the larger colonial city of Mompox, we receive a hands-on lesson in crafting filigree jewelry.

Indeed, this seven-night sailing from Cartagena to Barranquilla has proven to be one of the most unique trips I’ve ever taken, with a little bit of something for everyone: adventure, culture, history, and, of course, the casual luxury that defines a river cruise with AmaWaterways. — jeri clausing

ecause I live in New York City, my idea of heaven is remote, uncrowded, and wide-open landscapes. Yin needs yang. Tasmania, which checks all the boxes, has been on my radar for years. Australia’s southernmost, smallest, most mountainous state is a heart-shaped island roughly the size of Ireland but with only 10 percent of its population. I’ve long wanted to soak up the region’s natural beauty and pristine vistas, spot Tasmanian devils and wallabies, jump into frigid waters, stay in small, authentic hotels, and meet the famously friendly locals of “Tassie”—their affectionate nickname for the island.

I recently got my chance, and it was everything I had hoped for, and so much more.

The Northwest: Imagine the Scottish Highlands, without the castles or kilts This region is the home of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park, a nature reserve that’s over 3,000 feet above sea level and covers about a quarter of Tasmania’s surface. The weather forecast for this corner of the world: unpredictable. In the words of my all-knowing resident guide, Stan, “Expect four seasons in one hour,” and he was spot on.

Within that amount of time, I went from a rain jacket to a fleece and gloves to just a T-shirt. It rained intermittently, but I still walked the perimeter of Dove Lake, a well-marked fourmile trail with stunning views of waterfalls, Cradle Mountain (when the clouds permitted), and a tranquil rainforest under a canopy of dense moss known as the “forest ballroom.” I loved the glacial lakes, alpine grasslands, and rivers with tannin-stained waters. Armed with resolve and following Stan’s directions, I also hiked a portion of the Overland Track, Australia’s famous trail that takes days to complete. I marveled at indigenous trees like the King Billy pine, with a lifespan of over 1,000 years, and the Tasmanian Deciduous Beech, whose leaves turn red in autumn—a novelty in Australia, where trees typically shed only their bark. A lasting memory: spotting wallabies and pademelons on my morning walk to breakfast at Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge.

The East Coast: Informal and relaxed, not unlike a Mediterranean resort After days of overcast skies in Tasmania’s highlands, the sunny weather and navy-blue waters of the Freycinet Peninsula were a welcome tonic. This is also the land of the Hazards mountain range, described by the officers of the French Baudin expedition of 1802 as “high granitic mountains that rise sheer from their base.” Shortly after arrival, I walked to Richardsons Beach and dove into the clear Tasman Sea. Much colder than I’m used to, it was a shock to the system, but still refreshing. The Freycinet Peninsula is Mecca for outdoor adventures. I enjoyed a half-day kayaking adventure with my fearless guide Val, who showed me hidden gems along the coast. The following day, I hiked to the lookout of Wineglass Bay, perhaps Tasmania’s most recognized landmark. Admiring the perfect crescent of white sand against pink granite peaks was a thrill—like encountering a famous Rembrandt in person after seeing it in countless books. Another rare treat? Having the mile-long Coles Bay all to myself for a peaceful walk at sunset.

The Southwest: One of Australia’s last frontiers There are no roads that take you to this rugged, remote, and pristine wilderness. For decades, the only places to stay were in a rustic tented camp or on your own boat. That changed in 2023 when Pieter van der Woude launched On Board’s Odalisque III, a purpose-built catamaran that’s part of the Luxury Lodge of Australia collection—and now the best way to experience Tasmania’s untamed Southwest. Pieter is a remarkable entrepreneur who has lived many lives: search-and-rescue specialist, diver, explorer, businessman. I was privileged to have him as skipper on my cruise from Bathurst Harbour, along with master guide Peter Marmion, Tasmania’s celebrated writer, trekker, and photographer. “This region weaves a magic on people,” Marmion told me. And after just one outing, I wholeheartedly agreed. We explored temperate forests of Melaleuca, Eucalyptus, and precious Huon pine trees. We hiked to the summits of quartzite mountains, wandered along deserted beaches, cruised up rivers on a small skiff, and jumped into the ocean for a bracing shot of energy. On the last night of our cruise, we were rewarded with the Aurora Australis—a dream come true for me. I found the desolate immensity of this area to be haunting and powerful, and gained a deeper appreciation for it by learning about the explorers, whalers, and loggers who traveled through the region ages ago, along with the Indigenous Needwonnee communities who lived here for millennia. This cruise with On Board reminded me of being in Antarctica: unpredictable, spectacular, and governed by the wind and tides. All I had to do was let go, knowing I was in the most able hands.

Hobart: Culture, nature, and cuisine

Tasmania’s capital and Australia’s second oldest city is everything New York City is not: small, manageable, and easy to navigate. My favorite neighborhood was Battery Point, where I was charmed by the 19th century homes sitting so close to one another, each with a distinct architectural style. I walked the length of Salamanca Place, the historic sandstone warehouses lined with bars, galleries, shops, and restaurants. On Saturdays, Salamanca comes alive with countless stalls selling everything from fine art to fresh produce. I am a museum goer, so I visited the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery to view its superb survey of the island’s history and culture, as well as the MONA (Museum of Old and New Art), where I found some of the exhibitions surprising and intense. Hobart is also a great “base camp” from which to explore the region with easy day trips.

Two recommendations: First, the Port Arthur Historic Site, a former penal colony and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site—a must-see to understand Tasmania’s history. I learned the site was considered escape proof and held thousands of prisoners, some as young as nine years old, from 1830 to 1877. Also, be sure to visit the nearby town of Richmond. Just north of Hobart in the Coal River Valley region, it’s a hub of quality vineyards and superb produce with a storied past. My one regret is that I did not make it to the top of Mount Wellington for the fantastic views. Next time.

As I headed to the airport on my last day in Hobart, I noticed a slogan on many of the license plates: “Tasmania: Explore the Possibilities.” Sound advice indeed.

Where to Stay Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge, located near the entrance of Cradle MountainLake St. Clair National Park, is the best, and most convenient, choice for adventures in the Northwest region. Stay in a cozy cabin overlooking mountains and forests, just steps from the main lodge’s restaurants, spa, and roaring fireplaces.

When visiting the East Coast’s Freycinet Peninsula, I have two suggestions. First, Freycinet Lodge, which is the only resort within Freycinet National Park. This local institution is the area’s de facto living room. There’s an open-air atmosphere, easy access to two beaches, and freestanding cabins or modern Coastal Pavilions. A short drive away is Saffire Freycinet, easily Tasmania’s finest resort and a member of Luxury Lodges of Australia. Saffire’s bold design, spacious suites, and soaring glass windows with views of the Hazard mountains blew me away. I found the dining and service first-rate, and the ambience elegant but never stuffy. Wow factor: Visiting the resident Tasmanian devils at the resort’s nearby conservation project.

In Hobart, I loved two especially unique hotels in the harbor district. On the waterfront: MACq 01, a former shipping warehouse, with the stories of notable Tasmanians displayed on the 114 doors of the property’s guestrooms.

Across the street: The Henry Jones Art Hotel, a former jam factory that exhibits and sells Tasmanian artwork throughout the hallways and public spaces.

Don’t miss dinner at Landscape, the hotel’s award-winning restaurant and site of one of my favorite meals.

IT’S 3 p.m. on a sunny Cabo San Lucas afternoon, and

after pulling into the porte cochere of Chileno Bay Resort & Residences, Auberge Collection, my son and I are greeted by name and handed a cool, lavender-oil infused towel to beat the heat. After reviewing our customized itinerary, we’re whisked away by golf cart to our luxe villa. As I’m led around the room, I’m impressed by the minimalist Baja design. Yet over this long weekend, it’s the level of Auberge’s personalization that fast becomes just as noteworthy: handwritten notes at turndown, surprise desserts, a thoughtful list of restaurants in Switzerland from my Swiss-born butler once she learns I’ll soon be there.

Here’s my cheat sheet to the perfect stay at the resort.

THE VIBE

Every element of this all-villa sanctuary celebrates the Los Cabos indoor-outdoor lifestyle. With the Sea of Cortez as muse, sophisticated interiors and gathering spaces feature natural materials and a modern aesthetic. Built along a protective cove and comprising 32 one- to four-bedroom cliff or poolside villas with outdoor terraces, the resort is at once spacious and intimate. Take your pick of three pools, including an adults-only oasis near the ocean. There are several exceptional dining spots— our favorite is COMAL, a three-level space with ocean views and standout regional cuisine like fresh ceviche, braised short ribs with mole, and a decadent raw bar. Once the sun sets, teens gather in the game room while parents relax over Chileno wine dinners, or the whole family can try a pizza-making class inside their villa. Meanwhile, the new Baja Lab Kitchen showcases Mexico’s top culinary talent with special menus and events at Chileno Bay and sister Cabo property Esperanza.

THE ADVENTURE

At the resort’s H20 Cave, complimentary kayaks and stand-up paddleboards call for sunrise spins at the swimmable beach.

If you’re looking for an adrenaline spike, take an eFoil lesson or rent a Seabob to dip beneath the surface with speed. For snorkelers, there’s plenty of sea life right along the tranquil coastline, and scuba divers can explore dive sites near the famous arch. Los Cabos is coined the sportfishing capital of the world, so serious anglers find year-round fishing and a hook’em mentality. Surfers tackle local breaks with private guides, and for those with a more serene aqua escape in mind, private catamaran outings, whale watching, and full moon paddles are also on tap. To experience the area by land, there’s the Punta Lobos hike or an off-road ATV drive to the Sierra de La Laguna— a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with waterfalls and natural pools.

THE WELLNESS

Fitness buffs can take group spin and Pilates classes or pump iron at the large Fitness Center & Mindful Movement Center, and come downtime, Sol, the Spa at Chileno Bay, is a must.

Auberge Resorts is synonymous with sense-of-place relaxation and healing, and Sol’s locally inspired treatments include the Sacred Copal Ritual, which draws upon ancient Mexican healing traditions. Pre- or post-treatment, the Bath House is a unique hydrothermal circuit featuring hot and cold plunges, a steam room, and pink Himalayan salt rooms. While here, be sure to practice slowing down with a solo walk along the beach or a sunrise yoga session. For me, I discovered that doing absolutely nothing but laying in the sun while listening to the resort’s curated playlist was just what I needed.

As

a newbie to Switzerland—a country I’ve longed to explore— the train ride from Zurich airport to Lugano quickly springs my Swiss daydreams to reality. I traverse a dizzying mix of enchanting landscapes: urban graffiti gives way to emerald countryside, navy-blue lakes, and quaint little towns peppered with rustic church steeples and pastel-painted homes. I’ll quickly learn to cherish these in-between moments. As I excitedly hop from one destination to the next by train, getting to and from the country’s iconic cities becomes as memorable as the stops along the way.

A perfect itinerary includes two culture-rich days in Lugano—in Ticino, the Italian speaking Canton near Lake Como—followed by two serene days in Lucerne, a Swiss favorite bookended by the glorious Mount Pilatus and Mount Rigi. Connecting the two, the famous Gotthard Panorama Express (see below) is one of the world’s most scenic rail and boat journeys. Jump aboard to discover a land of alpinists and tastemakers, plus so many varying languages and dialects that during my first evening in Lugano, when asked if I’d like to try a glass of Swiss white merlot, I embarrassingly revert to Spanish—si, says my jet lag! Here’s why you, too, should say yes to all things Switzerland.

TICINO Day 1

Check into the Hotel Splendide Royal Lugano (see Where to Stay) and head out on foot to discover this lesser-known Swiss region, where alpine landscapes tumble dramatically toward Lake Lugano. Fun fact: The lake straddles the Italian-Swiss border, with 37 percent in Italy and the rest in Switzerland. A pedestrian path winds along the lake, where locals commute to work or have lakeside picnics. Placid water hugs steep, fjord-like shores, creating views that feel at once Mediterranean and Alpine—it took me a beat to process palm trees in Switzerland! After working off some jet lag, have lunch at Luini 6 Bistrot (see Where to Eat), located on the scenic square of the Piazza Bernardino Luini.

Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the LAC (Lugano Arts and Culture), a renowned arts center designed by architect Ivano Gianola and incorporating a restored Franciscan monastery into the main complex, now part of the museum’s public park.

A massive window frames the main hall, which leads to separate theaters and exhibitions for visual art, music, and theater. Insider tip: Don’t miss the trio of works by Swiss artist Felice Varini along the ramps of the underground garage beneath Piazza Luini. Next up, traditional afternoon tea at Hotel Splendide’s Belle Époque Bar, followed by dinner at Grotto Morchino. Located near the city center and housed in a charming stone house, the restaurant is known for regional comfort food, including the brasato polenta—slow-braised beef cooked in local Merlot wine and served over creamy polenta. Saluti!

Day 2

Start the morning slowly at Splendide’s Lifestyle Spa, which features a swoon-worthy poolside terrace with lake views.

Afterward, a hike to Monte Brè via Gandria is a moderate, 2.7-mile trek to the little Swiss village of Monte Brè. If short on time (or hamstring power), ride the funicular up, then hike down to Gandria along the lakeshore and enjoy a ferry ride back to Lugano. Next, take a deep dive into Ticino’s Swiss-Italian history at the UNESCO Fortress of Bellinzona. Comprising three castles (Castelgrande, Montebello, Sasso Corbaro), the fortress is linked by a wall built to protect the Ticino Valley, which in turn was the military key to watch over Northern Italy. Today, the museum at Castelgrande reveals historical artifacts like a 16th-century coin collection and hosts “Spada nella Rocca” performances, medieval reenactments by local thespians. Insider tip: A small train connects the three castles, and if you visit on Saturday, you can also catch the weekly town market. My favorite part was the beautiful vineyards surrounding the fortress.

Bonus Points: Take a day trip from Ticino to the Brissago Islands and the gorgeous Villa Emden. Only accessible by a Lake Maggiore boat, the historic hotel’s spectacular botanical gardens and its restaurant (serving lunch and dinner) is reason enough to island hop. Helmed by Chef João Antunes, the “7 Momenti” tasting menu features such dishes as catfish carpaccio sourced directly from Lake Maggiore.

The Pinnacle of Rail Travel While Switzerland is known for easy-to-navigate public trains and boats, the ultimate in-country travel experience is the Gotthard Panorama Express. Part boat ride, part train journey (operating from mid-April to mid-October), it’s an epic way to travel from Lugano to Lucerne (or vice versa) and promises a half-day of endless eye candy. When traveling from Lugano, the journey begins by rail into the heart of Switzerland aboard a first-class panoramic train with expansive windows framing enchanting views. The route snakes along the historic Gotthard mountain line and Gotthard Tunnel, navigating deep ravines, the iconic Wassen Church, and other historical sites along the way. Once in Lake Lucerne, you’ll take a paddle steamer across the lake—the ultimate arrival into an iconic Swiss favorite. Insider tip: The Swiss Travel Pass is essentially a master key to Switzerland’s impressive transportation network. Day 1

Upon arriving at Lake Lucerne, you’ll step into a new region and language, as your Uber driver greets you with “guten tag!” The luxe Mandarin Oriental Palace, Luzern can easily be reached on foot, and during your time in the city, there’s no need to get in a car again. Walk for miles around the lake and in town, beginning at KKL Luzern (Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre) and its fourth-floor Kunstmuseum Luzern (Museum of Art Lucerne).

After exploring mind-bending work by artists Maria PinińskaBereś, Walter Pfeiffer, and Laure Prouvost, traverse the iconic Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge). If lucky, you’ll stumble upon Franziskanerkirche, one of the oldest Gothic churches in the country. After boutique shopping, the Mandarin Oriental Palace is a posh perch to take in the comings and goings of Lake Lucerne: teens snuggling on park benches (not a cell phone in sight!), an intense game of bocce among older locals, dog walks, and boats of all shapes and sizes. Lucerne is a community that gathers on, in, and around the lake, with the Swiss Alps standing sentinel over it all.

Day 2

Getting to Bürgenstock Alpine Spa is half the fun. A morning catamaran ride reveals gorgeous Mute Swans (the swans are so important to the city that the confluence of Lake Lucerne, the Reuss River, and Old Town is named Schwanenplatz, or Swan Square). Topping Bürgenberg Mountain, Bürgenstock can only be reached by one of the oldest and steepest funiculars in Switzerland. At the top, a photo exhibition celebrates the resort’s history and famous guests: Audrey Hepburn married Mel Ferrer in Bürgenstock Chapel; Sophia Loren and her husband lived on property for many years; Sean Connery and the crew of the 1964 Goldfinger stayed at the Palace Hotel while filming. For me, the indoor-outdoor infinity pool is the highlight, and as I swim to the what feels like the edge of a cliff, I can understand why so many before me healed, created art, and connected to nature for extended stays—the view is one of the most memorable in all of Switzerland. After returning to Lucerne, take one last stroll along the lake, toward the Lido Beach Club and the Seehaus Grill. Toast the waterfront sunset with an Aperol Spritz and your German table mates. “Wirst du zurückkommen?” one asks me, then translating: “Will you come back?” “If I’m lucky,” I say, and clink his glass.

Bonus Points: Hike Mount Rigi or Mount Pilatus (better yet, both). Locals joke that you’re either Team Rigi or Team Pilatus, referring to the geography of their childhood homes. Hiking either is a Lucerne rite of passage, and I now have two big reasons to return.
