OUR live like a local ISSUE

ENJOY OUR SO YOU CAN TRAVEL WITH CONFIDENCE

It’s a phrase that we hear (and use!) a lot, but what does it really mean to “live like a local” when you’re a traveler? Whether you’re spending a week exploring Alaska for the first time or are joining a passionate river cruise guide from vineyards to authentic French bistros in a single day, we believe in creating experiences that mean something — and not just going through a checklist.

As travel enthusiasts ourselves, we have spent years developing relationships with locals around the globe. Our insiders enthusiastically share their long-held traditions, like how to make real Irish soda bread and which cultural traditions to seek out in Japan. Our insights stretch as far as you’d like to go.

Reserving with us also gives you access to special benefits. Enjoy extras like hotel credits and a welcome amenity at our favorite stays. We can also connect you with a complimentary Private Car & Guide on select voyages.

Essential Items for a Travel Insurance Claim

When you have comprehensive coverage, you’re free to put aside the stresses of the unknown and focus on the fun part of travel. Then, if an unexpected situation arises — such as a canceled or delayed flight, lost luggage or a health emergency — you can trust that you’ll be protected financially. However, it’s important to file your claim properly, which is much easier when you have the right paperwork from the start:

• Keep a copy of your travel insurance plan (and read all of the fine print!).

• Hold on to your flight information, boarding passes and any other relevant travel documents.

• Save the claim check stub and baggage tags from your checked luggage.

• If your luggage is lost, obtain a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) from the airline.

• In the case of lost luggage, flight delays, cancellations, or a medical emergency, save any and all receipts — and make any important notes on the back to keep track of them.

• Depending on the event, you will also want to have medical reports, police reports and any other documentation related to your claim. Have questions? Call or email us and we’ll help you find the plan that makes the most sense for you.

Around Our World

on everything that’s happening — or about to happen — in the world of travel.

READY TO RACE

Spring beauty overflows in the Principality of Monaco, where enchanting gardens burst forth in vibrant colors and the harbor gleams with lavish yachts ready to sail in the Mediterranean Sea. More than just a lovely time of year, the streets of Monte Carlo will be buzzing with energy for the Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco 2025. Contact us to plan a trip or ask us about reserving a Mediterranean cruise that delivers you to the port just in time to experience this exciting event.

WHY AUSTRALIA IS HAVING ITS MOMENT

It’s time to move Australia off your wish list and onto your 2025 calendar. Kick off the year at the Australian Open, as tennis legends from around the world compete in Melbourne on January 12–26, 2025, and the Australian Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix will take over in March. Catch up with cultural attractions at Vivid Sydney, May 19 through June 15, 2025, as the city lights up for the largest arts festival in the Southern Hemisphere. We’ll time your visit to Australia to these major events and connect you with other local highlights along the way.

AN ANNIVERSARY TO REMEMBER

Coming up is the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. The city of Berlin has declared May 8, 2025, as Victory in Europe Day — a one-time public holiday where you can commemorate this landmark day on a historical walking tour of the city. Ask us about WWII-themed cruises in Europe, and learn about the final days of the war at The National World War II Museum in New Orleans.

Our specialty has always been crafting unique vacations, so when we connect you with an organized tour or build a bespoke itinerary, we can make your journey unforgettable.

Whether you’re traveling with a partner, your best friends or 20 of your favorite relatives, it’s OK to hand over the reins. A guided experience can include seamless transportation such as private coaches waiting to whisk you away after a delightful breakfast, tickets prepurchased for hassle-free train journeys or a friendly hand to hail a taxi whenever you need.

Not only that, but local partnerships grant you access to exclusive experiences, such as VIP entrances and skip-theline privileges at iconic sights from the majestic Alhambra to the aweinspiring Vatican. Let’s not overlook the appeal of luggage transfers and a guide who speaks the local language!

What exactly does an ethnomusicologist do?

We investigate music in its social and cultural contexts — as it relates to their histories, values, social and political structures, concepts of art, language, and so on.

What are some ways a traveler can seek out music in their local experiences?

Before I visit a new place I reach out to people to get their suggestions of good local

artists and recommendations for live venues and festivals. I can’t tell you how many times my adventure in a new country began in the taxi ride from the airport, when I name-dropped one or two local musicians to the driver. The next thing you know they are playing me their favorite songs and [recommending] places to see live music. Often, I stumble across great music by keeping my ears open. Following the sounds of music in the streets has led me to amazing concerts,

street festivals, jam sessions, rehearsals, and so much more.

What makes Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic voyages unique in this aspect?

I use music to deepen people’s understanding and appreciation of the destinations we are visiting. That means inviting world-class musicians who are experts in both the performance and history of local music tradition. It also means giving them some historical and cultural background to appreciate what they are hearing and put it in some context. Whenever possible, I try to present music in a magical local setting to bring it out of the concert hall and into the environment where it was formed.

What experiences in Iceland are you excited to share with guests?

Iceland has a thriving music scene and punches far above its weight in terms of bands per capita that have become popular around the world. It also has a rich choral tradition and more recently has produced several acclaimed film composers. I will be inviting some of my favorite local musicians to perform for our guests and — in some cases — to travel with us as artists-in-residence on board the ship. Guests can expect music inspired by Icelandic legends and life in a rugged and beautiful landscape performed by captivating musicians with great stories to tell.

Find out how to roam like a local with Norwegian Cruise Line.

With Go Local shore excursions on Norwegian Cruise Line, you not only get to experience the world from an insider’s point of view — you also reap all the benefits of reserving with us. Explore with trusted locals who know these ports intimately, travel with smaller groups of less than 25 guests and never get left behind if your excursion runs late.

BEHIND THE LANDMARKS OF BRUGES

Go past the famed 15th-century Kruispoort gate to see what lies beyond. Wander through lanes lined with residential homes and see Bruges’ four windmills that remain on the ramparts as you walk along Kruisvest. Peer into the private Jeruzalemkapel (Jerusalem Chapel) and then observe the ancient artisan trade of lace making.

A DIFFERENT SIDE OF FLORENCE

Let an expert guide you through the humming San Lorenzo Market with its open-air vendors and point out local delicacies and architectural delights within the restored cast-iron building. Just a short walk from the city’s main piazza is Oltrarno, a marvelously cool neighborhood loaded with boutique shops, trendy restaurants and open spaces for people-watching.

LISBON’S DELICACIES

Bring your appetite to Lisbon’s most beguiling neighborhoods. A flavorful bite of creamy Serra da Estrela cheese transports you to the mountains where this sheep’s milk cheese is made. In Mouraria, the Moorish Quarter where fado music was born, you’ll sip ginja, a sweet cherry-infused liquor. Hop aboard a local tram and end your journey with Portuguese favorites, such as flaky pastéis de bacalhau (codfish pastry).

TRADITIONS OF SANTORINI

Amid the beauty of this Greek island, get an intimate look at an ancient tradition: local craftsmen making traditional Greek instruments in the Museum of Musical Instruments. Try your hand at strumming a bouzouki or laouto before visiting a family-owned winery to sip classic Santorini wines.

TRAVELING TENERIFE

Explore beyond the beaches of Tenerife to reach the fertile region of the Orotava Valley where bananas, sugarcane and grapes are grown using traditional techniques. Take a guided tour of a banana plantation and sample the fresh fruit — as well as sweet banana liqueur — on this engaging excursion.

BUON APPETITO a tutti!

Learn to cook like an Italian with Delta Vacations.

Amid the bustle of a Florentine market, a whirlwind of scents and sights seems to mingle with the lively chatter of Italians doing their daily shopping. Displayed before you are stalls filled with ingredients that, on their own, may seem outside of your culinary comfort zone: fresh pecorino Toscano, aged a minimum of 20 days; earthy nuggets of fragrant truffles; and dried beans of all shapes and colors.

Thanks to the expertise of an Englishspeaking guide, you’ll learn to navigate an Italian market and taste your way through regional delicacies. Taste the grassy notes of olive oil, discover an

array of salamis and cheeses, and find the right pairing of local wines.

Should you desire a more hands-on approach, combine a market visit with a cooking lesson. Unlock the secrets of authentic Italian cuisine as you craft a

fresh pasta dish with classic sauces or knead the perfect dough to create your own wood-fired pizza. You might even learn how to make sweet, airy gelato from scratch and, of course, enjoy the results of all your efforts.

Think Bigger,

GO SMALLER

Tauck introduces smaller groups for greater adventures.

Our world is so vast, but the experience of travel brings us closer together. Create tightly knit connections with Tauck when you travel in a smaller group with an average of 15 guests.

When you join a smaller group departure, you’ll enjoy deeper access to destinations by way of local cultures, landscapes and stories. A smaller group also allows you to create more meaningful connections with your Tauck Director, local guides and travel companions.

As Tauck celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2025 there will be smaller group offerings in more than 12 countries in North America, Europe and Africa.

Spend a week exploring Ireland with other like-minded travelers, experiencing off-the-beaten-path excursions and enjoying special occasions like a private recital at Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral in Cork and two nights in Dromoland Castle. Experiencing a place is different than simply seeing one. Each journey with Backroads combines scenic outdoor adventures with cultural immersion, like meeting artists in their workspaces, learning about local architecture and checking out restaurants that are off the main trail.

Go beyond the icons and learn local rituals when you travel with Avanti Destinations.

Flashes of neon billboards and skyhigh cityscapes may be the images you have of Japan. But as you explore further, you’ll begin to understand the traditions that have carried over from the past to the hypermodern present. Let us work with the experts at Avanti Destinations to create a mindful journey that is entirely tailored to you.

From the cities to the countryside, an authentic Japanese tea ceremony is one of the essential experiences. Upon entering a simple wooden tea house, a calming atmosphere surrounds you. As you sit or kneel on tatami mats, your host’s movements are intricate and precise — a ritual that has been passed down for centuries. During this event, your tea ceremony honors four principles: harmony (wa), respect (kei), purity (sei), and tranquility (jaku).

Japanese culinary traditions are unique to every region that you visit. Meet a guide to wander through Kyoto’s Nishiki Market and dine on street food, fresh sushi and Japanese snacks. Gather fresh ingredients before walking through backstreets for a sake tasting, then regroup in a local town house for a hands-on cooking class.

Should your interests lead you toward different paths, we can arrange all the details. Explore an open-air museum in Hakone, wander through Kyoto’s gardens and shrines, witness a maiko dance, and much more.

SOUTH KOREA’S Intangible Heritage

Learn how long-held traditions keep local knowledge alive.

In the windswept waters surrounding the volcanic island of Jeju, a local practice has thrived since the 17th century. Meet the haenyeo, the women divers of Jeju. Many of these resilient divers are respected elders who have spent decades free diving deep beneath the surface to harvest sea urchin, abalone and other morsels from the sea. Watch them in action, taste the treasures they gather and visit a museum dedicated to this community that has been inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

All throughout your journey in South Korea, traditions still loom large. Meet the masters who specialize in crafts such as finely lacquered tableware and ancient woodblock prints. Learn about the spiritual aspects of temple food during a stay at Baegyangsa Temple, and discover other examples of intangible heritage such as festivals, storytelling to a rhythmic drum beat and colorful mask dancing.

Local guides show off elements of South Korean culture that have made their way to the international stage. Taste the popular comfort food that comes from convenience stores and learn K-pop choreography from the experts.

From historical practices to modern-day life, you’re invited to be a part of South Korea’s culture. Call, email or visit our website, found on the back cover, and enter offer m27452 to learn more.

Diving Into

FRENCH POLYNESIA

Explore expanded experiences with Windstar Cruises. We

As you arrive gracefully on an intimate ship, the beauty of the South Pacific and its emerald islands is breathtaking beyond comprehension. Yet it’s the connections that Windstar Cruises has forged in French Polynesia that will elevate your well-deserved vacation into a journey of a lifetime.

For more than 36 years, Windstar Cruises has been confidently navigating the waters around French Polynesia. Now, the allsuite, 312-guest Star Breeze has arrived, doubling the number of guests who are invited to sail in these shimmering seas all year round. Your small ship can access the region’s harder-to-reach harbors and sheltered lagoons, including a new 14-day voyage that reaches the remote Marquesas Islands.

Remaining unchanged is Windstar Cruises’ dedication to local immersion, highlighted by an evening of fire

dancing and dining on a private Tahitian motu. Engaging lessons give you newfound knowledge of regional traditions such as crafting a lei, tying a pareo and playing the ukulele, as taught to you by locals. Shore excursions go as deep into the culture as you desire, including an expanded partnership with Coral Gardeners — an unparalleled opportunity to meet a devoted team of conservationists and learn how they’re working to restore the ocean, one coral at a time.

In connection with the legendary eco-resort The Brando, guests of Star Breeze’s premium suites can now add the experience of spending two nights on a secluded atoll. Within this slice of paradise, you’re free to explore just as you wish, from snorkeling a crystal-clear lagoon and joyfully peering at tropical birds to dining on Polynesian-inspired cuisine and unwinding in Varua Te Ora Polynesian Spa.

Exploring the Diverse Cultures in

Canada

I can see my warm breath in the icy air as I wander through the tiny unincorporated community of Carcross, Yukon. The colorful totem poles here sharply contrast the white snow that blankets the ground. I make my way inside Haa Shagóon Hídi, the community’s cultural center, to meet with Violet Gatensby, a Carcross/Tagish First Nation artist.

Our small group of travelers follows Gatensby inside an expansive hall that houses an enormous, intricately carved canoe she crafted while apprenticing with Alaskan Tlingit master carver Wayne Price. After countless hours of work, the canoe holds deep meaning for the artist who is quickly becoming one of the most prominent Indigenous artists in the territory.

“Every time I see this canoe, I’m reminded that I can do anything,” she said.

After talking about the canoe and why it is culturally significant, she then showed us another of her art pieces and explained the symbolism behind the wolf, caribou tracks, fish, and northern lights featured in the colorful carving. We only spent a couple of hours with this talented Indigenous artist, but it was enough time to feel her passion and appreciate the beauty of her culture.

The second-largest country in the world by total land area, Canada is a country of immigrants and Indigenous Peoples and is one of the most culturally diverse nations in the world. According to a 2020 government census, 92 percent of Canadians consider ethnic or cultural diversity to be a Canadian value. There are many cultures to explore on a visit to Canada, but three that are particularly unique and fascinating are Indigenous, French-Canadian and Acadian.

THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES IN CANADA

Many different Indigenous nations and groups live in Canada. More than 70 different Indigenous languages are spoken by the Indigenous Peoples in Canada, which include First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples. Each group has their own customs, cultural traditions and legends. Indigenous tourism experiences are one of the best ways to explore these unique cultures, and it’s one of the fastest-growing tourism sectors in Canada.

On my winter tour of the Yukon, I had the chance to meet two world-class Indigenous artists and talk to them about their art, discuss their lives in the Yukon and learn more about their cultures. On a previous visit to the Yukon, I met James Allen, a First Nations Elder and former Chief of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations. He shared many Southern Tutchone legends in a storytelling session that I have never forgotten. I still think about those legends when I look at the night sky.

FRENCH-CANADIAN CULTURE AND JOIE DE VIVRE

The French and the British were the two colonizing nations of Canada, and since 1969, Canada has had two official languages — French and English. A large number of Francophone people live in Canada — particularly concentrated in Québec, which is the province where my mother’s side of the family originates. The history of this region is fascinating, and perhaps no place is better to explore it than Old Québec in Québec City, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the cradle of French-Canadian culture in Canada. This fortified city is home to grand

architecture such as Château Frontenac and an archaeological museum within Îlot des Palais — which was once the site of New France’s first brewery. My explorations of French-Canadian culture in Québec have allowed me to experience the region’s “joie de vivre” or “the joy of living.” You can feel this joy in festivals like Québec City’s Winter Carnival, by visiting a sugar shack during maple syrup season, or simply by sampling the unique foods of the region like wine and cheese, poutine or the legendary Montréal smoked meat sandwich.

Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, Québec

THE STORIED PAST AND PRESENT OF ACADIAN CULTURE

In 1604, French explorers Pierre de Monts and Samuel de Champlain established Port-Royal in what is now the Maritime Province of Nova Scotia. This city became the heart of Acadia, a unique culture that still exists today and has a fascinating and storied past in Canada. The Acadians thrived and developed agricultural farmland using dykes and an aboiteau wooden sluice system.

The Expulsion of the Acadians by the British happened between 1755 and 1764 when the majority of the Acadians were forcibly removed from the region and their lands

were given to British settlers. In 1847, American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote “Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie,” an epic poem about an Acadian girl named Evangeline and her search for her lost love, Gabriel, during the time of the Expulsion.

To understand Acadian culture, Port-Royal National Historic Site in Nova Scotia offers a living history experience featuring a reconstructed 17th-century settlement once known as the Habitation. Set within the former Acadian village of Grand-Pré, Grand-Pré National Historic Site is an important monument and museum.

Learn the powerful stories of the Acadian Expulsion, and wander the lovely Victorian garden to see the statue of Evangeline.

Delve into Canada’s diverse cultural heritage in regions throughout the country. From Indigenous treasures in the Yukon Territory to Acadian history in Nova Scotia and French-inspired culture in Québec, their legacies live on through storytelling. Where Two Icons Meet

Transit the legendary Panama Canal on a classic tall ship with Star Clippers.

It’s with a sense of triumph that Royal Clipper — a five-masted tall ship with 42 sails — arrives at the Panama Canal, ready to navigate the ingenious system that made its debut in 1914.

As the wind carries you through the blissful islands of the Caribbean to Panama’s sunny shores, the transit experience is one of the great highlights. Enjoy your front-row seat as your ship rises and falls

through the locks and you learn about the canal’s historical significance.

On the Pacific side, a visit to the Miraflores Visitor Center reveals a whole new angle of the locks and channels. An excursion into Panama City takes you to the charming Panamá Viejo, the old quarter that has been named a UNESCO Archaeological Site. Or take a hike to Ancon Hill, a nature preserve where views of wildlife are matched only by your perspective of Panama City from high above.

As you sail away from every port, your captain will raise the sails to the dramatic sounds of Vangelis. Climb the mast to reach the crow’s nest, which rises 75 feet

over the water. Relax in the bowsprit netting above the ocean or retreat into a hidden balcony on either side of the bow.

As much as this journey pays homage to the past, you’re assured all of the modern comforts. Make new friends at the Tropical Bar or sip pre-dinner drinks at the Piano Bar before settling down for open seating in the tri-level dining room. Attentive staff take care of every request as you enjoy wide-open deck spaces and three swimming pools during your leisurely days.

Let us start planning so you can be off on your adventure. Call, email or visit our website, found on the back cover. Enter offer m27408 to learn more.

Perfect Day at CocoCay brings together peak adventures with ultimate relaxation. Spread out over 125 acres, you’ll never feel overwhelmed and you’re free to find different pockets of activities that call out to you.

Get drenched.

Several waterslides make up Thrill Waterpark, so you’re in control of how high you ride. Take the ride of your life on the 135-foot-tall Daredevil’s Peak,® quite literally the tallest waterslide in the Caribbean. As you plunge down a translucent tube, you’ll face a thrilling 35 seconds of twists and turns with a watery end.

Climb to the 75-foot Dueling Demons drop slides, pick your slide — yellow or blue — and the countdown is on before you race to the bottom. The Manta Raycers top out at only 25 feet and deliver a splashy finish. Tackle the coils of the Green Mamba, drop into the vertical Screeching Serpent and take on the others for a full day of waterpark adventure.

Time to take flight.

All ages are welcome on Up, Up & Away, a 10-minute helium balloon ride that soars up to 450 feet above the island. These are the highest views in the Bahamas, showing off the water’s many shades of blue and contrasting hues of lush greenery against powdery white sands.

If chasing altitude is your thing, the zip line is next on your to-do list. Crisscross the island on 1,600 feet of zip line, overlooking the Thrill Waterpark and the coastline before soaring across the harbor.

From the salt-kissed shores of Mykonos, your guide will whisk you into a different terrain altogether. On a sprawling organic farm and biodynamic vineyard, local vintner Nikos Asimomytis shares the fruits of his labor. Not only have his wines been cultivated without chemicals or pesticides, but the grapes themselves were nurtured by the sounds of classical music while still on the vines.

In the heart-shaped peninsula of Istria, a rare treasure grows. Discover the earthen delights of truffles, and spend time with a Croatian family who harvests them with the help of specially trained dogs. Join them on an exhilarating hunt through the woods, and sample artisan goods such as truffle-infused cheese, pâté and olive oil.

FALL IN LOVE WITH France

(All Over Again!)

Meeting vintners on their own terrain, cycling past grapevines that seem to stretch on forever, and discovering ingredients that taste of the land and water around you — even if you think you know France, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises will show you more than you envisioned.

On board your luxury boutique river cruise, navigate the magnificent rivers of Bordeaux to explore this region’s rich legacy and culinary bounty. Sip sweet sauternes in a 14th-century fortress and taste how white wine enhances the fresh flavors of Médoc oysters. Local tours take you into colorful farmers markets and an after-hours light show, while enhanced excursions feature a French cooking class or a grand cru tasting.

Follow the flow of the Rhône and Saône rivers to discover the many treasures of Burgundy and Provence. You’ll stir up your senses on a vineyard hike and have an opportunity to meet the silk weavers of Lyon. Choose a local

village outing where medieval homes still stand proudly or dig deep into the long-standing tradition of truffle hunting.

Compare and contrast wine regions of both French wine country and Portugal’s Douro Valley in one voyage. Your palate will experience all sorts of varietals from the sweetness of white dessert wine from the Cadillac region of France to the famous port wine from Porto. Wine toast
Almudena Cathedral, Madrid, Spain
Rooftop views, Madrid

Madrid is a destination that bubbles with energy, and Madrileños are eager to share their culture with visitors. Even just an evening stroll can make you fall in love with the Spanish capital. My daily sunset walks take me past centuries-old landmarks and plazas abuzz with action as couples walk hand in hand, kids happily play and crowded outdoor terraces overflow with residents. Come to the Spanish capital for the iconic art, emblematic architecture and inviting restaurants, but stay and get to know the friendly locals, world-famous sports and even a Spanish pueblo or two.

Club Financiero Génova

Cultural Exploration

I could wander forever along Madrid’s tree-lined boulevards, admiring the Art Deco architecture on Gran Vía or the historic literary streets of the Las Letras neighborhood. But Madrid’s emblematic Golden Triangle of Art merits a stop. It includes three world-famous art museums: Museo del Prado, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza.

The Prado features classic art, home to works by El Greco, Goya and Velázquez. I head to the Reina Sofía when I need a boost of creativity, as the modern, surrealist works by Picasso and Dalí encourage self-reflection and imagination. The Thyssen has a mixture of art styles and regularly features special exhibits.

Madrid has a stately, regal air — many of its buildings were former palaces. But the official Palacio Real, distinguished and massive, is one of the largest in Western Europe with more than 3,000 rooms, including an armory, apothecary and a collection of Stradivarius string instruments.

Nearby, Madrid’s surroundings include three UNESCO World Heritage sites, my favorite of which is Alcalá de Henares, the birthplace of Miguel de Cervantes (author of “Don Quijote de la Mancha”). The others are Aranjuez and El Escorial, sprawling palaces with peaceful, inviting gardens.

Dining Around Town

Madrid’s broad range of culinary options makes it challenging (but exciting) to decide where to eat. The city has more than a dozen 100-year-old taverns, which sit next to Michelin-starred contemporary restaurants, tapas bars and trendy cocktail joints.

Start by familiarizing yourself with many of the city’s top dishes by wandering through local food markets. There’s the tourist-catered Mercado de San Miguel, where you can taste freshly sliced Iberian ham. More local markets include: Cebada, known for its decadesold seafood stands; Vallehermoso, where you can drink Asturian cider and get pulled pork sandwiches; and San Antón, which has an open-air rooftop terrace.

Some of Madrid’s best cuisine is its simplest: eating a piping hot calamari sandwich as you wander through the 16thcentury tiered Plaza Mayor or a runny tortilla española beneath Madrid’s sunny skies after a stroll in El Retiro Park.

One of my favorite spots for a culture and cuisine combo is Corral de la Morería, a Michelin-starred flamenco tablao with fresh, local dishes served to the stomps and claps of flamenco. There’s also Botín, the oldest restaurant in the world according to Guinness World Records. Or drink and tapear with local residents at the crowded centenarian Bodega de la Ardosa.

Tapas at Mercado de San Miguel

Day Trips Worth the Drive

Just 30 minutes outside Madrid’s city center, you’ll find picturesque villages, towering mountain ranges and even vineyards and wineries. I love weaving past the olive groves to get to Chinchón, a medieval village whose multi-story Plaza Mayor has balconies with green wrought iron railings where you can dine overlooking a central bullring.

My personal pick is Buitrago del Lozoya, a mountain town with ninth-century Moorish walls that surround the city, a Gothic church and a castle. All of it is perched above the Lozoya River, an excellent spot for hikes and walks — my top choice when I need an infusion of nature.

Madrid’s surroundings also have a wine scene that’s starting to rival its Rioja and Ribera del Duero neighbors. Combine a trip to Chinchón with a stop at the family-run Bodegas Peral, where you can learn about Madrid’s wines alongside tastings, dinners or concerts.

Vineyard, Rioja, Spain
Buitrago del Lozoya

Savvy Souvenir Shopping

You can find dozens of luxury shops along the Golden Mile, a stretch of boutiques and designer stores along Calle Serrano, and a Zara on practically every corner.

But Madrid’s timeless history makes it the perfect destination for antique shopping. Barter for souvenirs at the flea market, El Rastro, which occurs weekly on Sundays. For a taste of the city’s artisanal goods, shop for handmade espadrilles at Antigua Casa Crespo or Casa Hernanz, fans at Casa de Diego, and capes made from Spanish wool at Capas Seseña. Whenever I need to pick up a handmade leather gift, I head to Casa Luque, one of the oldest glove shops in the city.

For Fútbol Fans

When I tell people around the world that I live in Madrid, their first response usually has something to do with fútbol. Even if you aren’t a soccer superfan, Madrid’s two main fútbol teams are some of the most famous on the planet: Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid.

Lori Zaino has been living in and writing about Madrid for nearly two decades. Bilingual in English and Spanish, she never gets tired of exploring the Spanish capital. You can find her sipping Spanish wine or admiring “Muchacha en La Ventana,” her favorite Dalí painting, at the Reina Sofía.

Although experiencing a game is the best way to understand more about Madrid’s dedicated relationship with soccer and their beloved teams, you can also visit the team stadiums for an insider tour. And if you want to root for the underdog, catch a Rayo Vallecano, Club Deportivo Leganés or Getafe Club de Fútbol game, where you’ll be surrounded almost exclusively by local fans. Find what inspires you and explore Madrid like a local when we reserve your journey. DESIGNED FOR EXPLORATION

Viking Longship® on the Rhine
On vessels built to navigate the world’s rivers, Viking® voyages were created for curious travelers.

While the sleek lines and serene Scandinavian design may be the first thing you notice about your ship, sailing The Viking Way means so much more. Every Viking river voyage is rooted in destination immersion, sailing smoothly into intimate ports and expanding your view of local cultures from ship to shore.

Begin by selecting which river region you’re ready to explore — including longtime favorites such as a dreamy voyage along the Danube, cultural enrichment on the Rhine, French delights on the Seine and Central European exploration on the Elbe. Viking has longtime connections in each of these destinations and is prepared to usher you in with style.

As you approach every new port, onboard experts offer insights and overviews about what to anticipate the next day. Guest lecturers show you why Viking is considered “the thinking person’s travel experience,” shedding light on topics such as cultural arts and historical treasures. Shore excursions are crafted with intention to ensure you get the most out of your time on land, whether it’s listening to Mozart and Strauss in the heart of Vienna or enjoying a regional wine-paired meal in a former Cistercian monastery.

Beyond the World’s Rivers

Viking made its mark in river cruising and has since flourished in both ocean and expedition voyages. It’s no wonder that Condé Nast Traveler readers voted Viking the #1 River, Ocean and Expedition Line in the 2023 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards — the first time such accolades have been awarded simultaneously.

Viking Longship on the Danube

Your days can be as exhilarating as you’d like, with opportunities to bicycle between towns and hike up to a hilltop castle. Local Life excursions show you perspectives that not every traveler gets to experience, such as sipping Cologne’s famous beer in a historic Brauhaus restaurant or dipping into the therapeutic waters of a Budapest thermal spa.

Cultural immersion is also central to your time on board your ship. Curated entertainment creates emotional ties to the places you visit, from enchanting Viennese opera to the moody sounds of Portuguese fado. Cooking demonstrations reveal traditional recipes of local food and drink, while artisans share the secrets of their time-honored crafts. Whether you’re sipping a flight of regional wines or browsing the hand-selected library to enhance your understanding of this region, each detail is designed to enrich your experience.

Every Viking river voyage includes a complimentary shore excursion in every port, all onboard meals, complimentary beer and wine with onboard lunch and dinner, enrichment lectures, destination performances, and more. Reach out to us to find a river itinerary that matches your passions and timeline and we’ll get started.

Outward-facing design meets innovative experiences on Celebrity Cruises’ Edge Series.

Five cutting-edge ships put a world of adventures within reach. You can join Celebrity Cruises on voyages to all seven continents, including exciting ports of call in Alaska, Europe, the Caribbean, and many more — and the moments that stand out the most might very well be those that you experience on board.

Edge Series ships have a way of surprising and delighting you in the most unexpected ways. A touch of a button opens up your Infinite Veranda,, allowing fresh air and views of the open sea to flow into your stateroom. Order a Mediterranean feast, taste the authentic flavors of Tuscany, evoke the essence of Paris, and enjoy your favorite modern American dishes — all complimentary with dishes made fresh daily and inspired by the regions we visit.

With spaces that are destinations on their own, your Edge Series ship is always shifting and transforming. The bright

tangerine Magic Carpet is a vision to behold and is even more exciting when you’re soaring through the air high above the sea. The world’s first cantilevered floating platform recreates itself one level at a time — as a restaurant, a bar and lounge, and a gateway to your tender. The Grand Plaza spans three airy decks, lit up by a dazzling chandelier, where bartenders show off their talents. Look over the very edge of the ship from the lush Rooftop Garden and soak up those ocean views from the outward-facing Resort Deck.

Choose from five groundbreaking vessels and the level of accommodations you wish to experience — including The Retreat, the most elevated suite experience at sea with access to exclusive onboard spaces, like a private restaurant, and your dedicated butler who is just a message away.
