Swisstainable
Sustainability has been shaping Switzerland for decades. Whether through the predominant use of hydroelectric power, the high environmental awareness of the Swiss people or the early and comprehensive expansion of public transport, which illustrates what sustainability looks like in Swiss tourism: created for the regional population, enjoyed by guests from all over the world.
This sustainability programme is designed not as yet another certification process, but with the intention of providing guidance for you. At the same time, we want to create a movement in which the entire industry can get involved.
So far over 2000 service providers in Switzerland are participating in the Swisstainable programme. Each supplier is making their offerings more sustainable.

Sustainability in Switzerland
Unmatched Sustainability
Nature is our greatest asset, and that’s why we protect it. With its mighty mountains, turquoise-blue lakes, and enchanted forests, Switzerland is a unique travel destination. Our nature provides energy, and it has to stay that way, for us and for all generations to come.
Why is Switzerland considered a sustainable travel destination?

More than 11,000 trains travel daily on SBB's network, making even the most remote places easily accessible.

Swiss parks cover 20% of the country’s area, and the Forest Act of 1876 ensures that forest areas do not shrink.

Switzerland holds about 6% of Europe’s fresh water reserves and is considered the continent’s water castle.

Switzerland boasts excellent air quality and has long been known as a health and wellness destination.

Organic Food
Switzerland is one of the world’s leaders in per capita organic food consumption.

Many Swiss hotels adopt sustainable practices, such as energy efficiency and organic food offerings.

Recycling
Switzerland is one of the world’s top recycling nations, with 85% of PET bottles being reused.

Switzerland values regional culture, fosters dialogue between visitors and locals, and ensures accessibility for all.

Swiss National Park
The Swiss National Park in the Engadine is all about nature. All this can be enjoyed in an area of over 170 square kilometers. Thanks to 80 kilometers of hiking paths, nature trails and excursion destinations for children and families, everyone can have a good time.

Blümlisalp Paddle Steamer
The steamboat and the scenery you glide through is impressive, crowned by the mountain trio of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The Blümlisalp is particularly atmospheric during evening trips, when the surrounding mountains are touched by the last rays of the setting sun.

Marvel at the sunrise over the Matterhorn at least once in your lifetime. Don’t miss wandering through the vineyards of the winemaking villages of Lavaux. Or conquering the cobblestoned Tremola on the south side of the Gotthard Pass. The Grand Tour of Switzerland is a magnificent holiday and driving experience - and a concentration of all things Swiss: 1,600 kilometres long, it spans four linguistic regions, five Alpine passes, 12 UNESCO World Heritage sites and 22 stunning lakes.
MySwitzerland is happy to present a selection of highlights from 10 regions on the world’s first road trip for electric vehicles, the Grand Tour of Switzerland. Have fun exploring!

Cheeses from Switzerland – a time-honoured tradition
Cheeses from Switzerland
Swiss cheese makers are passionate about guarding their time-honoured traditions. In the small village cheese dairies, of which there are around 600 throughout Switzerland, the cheese makers combine the old knowledge of cheesemaking with the best of modern technology to ensure that quality is maintained for the consumer. The essential element in any cheeses from Switzerland is the milk. It is delivered daily fresh from the cow and not from any unknown sources. And it is the quality of that milk that gives cheeses from Switzerland its premium reputation. The majority of the over 700 types of Swiss cheeses are produced from unpasteurised milk. Cheese makers know that the flavour is just not the same when milk has been pasteurised and taste destroyed in the process.

Lake Geneva is home to around thirty species of fish, some of which are very tasty. Enjoying a fillet of perch on a terrace is a pleasure not to be missed on sunny days. While this fish remains the star dish of the local terraces, other freshwater fish such as fera, trout or monkfish can also be savoured.
