The 2021 academic year is well underway here at St Minver and despite the ongoing challenges of covid, we adapt as we go and are enjoying our learning journey together. We have been delighted to be able to ofer wraparound care as a new feature this term. Currently running on a trial basis, we have a newly refurbished space with direct access to our huge outside area and a calm place to chill, eat and gather before and after school. We are delighted with the uptake so far and hope we can sustain this to make wraparound care a permanent and integral part of life at St Minver School. We have a newly elected school council in place this autumn, with representatives from Years One to Six. Elections gave the children the opportunity to write their own manifesto, and then allowed all children to take a vote and to see democracy in action as votes were counted. It is fantastic to hear the children talking passionately, not only about how to make our school the best it can be, but also what local changes they would like to make in order to make a global environmental impact. We look forward to hearing more from our student voice. Our building project to construct an outside covered learning area for our Year 1 children will shortly be completed and will greatly enhance provision, allowing us greater fexibility and capacity for child-initiated exploring activities and investigations. The project would not have been possible without signifcant grant funding from the Link Magazine and from both the St Minver Highlands and Lowlands Councils, as well as our PTA. We are excited to get learning in the new space imminently.

It is super to resume some sporting events outside of St Minver and we are extremely grateful for the support of our families in doing this. Both boys’ and girls’ teams have taken part in England Schools’ Football Association tournaments in recent weeks. In both cases, we were proud with the way the children represented our school, the boys coming away as runners up and the girls securing third place. Similarly, classes have been able to resume trips this term, which are an excellent way to complement learning and to place knowledge into a meaningful context. Our Year 6 class had an extremely wet yet enjoyable day on the Bodmin and Wenford Railway, walking along the old train route on the Camel Trail and fnding out about the railways coming to Cornwall during the Victorian era at the Wadebridge Museum. Year 5, on the other hand, had an adventurous time at The Tide Climbing Centre, where they were able to put into practice, in a more modest way, what climbers might have experienced tackling Mount Everest! Team St Minver are now very much looking forward to Christmas time in school and the many opportunities we will have, each day, to show how we can ‘Be brave, be kind, belong’.
