The membership of the Council increased fromtwenty-seventofifty-fouron24September1973, as a result of another adjustment made to the same Article to reflect the expansion of the Council'sresponsibilities.

Given the flexibility of the Charter, Article 109 allows for a GeneralConferenceofMember States to amend the document, provided that two-thirds of the General Assembly and nine members of the Security Council vote in favor of the revision. Interestingly, the number of affirmative votes required by the Security Council was raised from seven to nine with the 1968 revision of Article 109. Although the fundamental principles of the Charter have not changed, these revisions demonstrate the international community's dedication to strengthening and improving the systems that underpin international cooperation and diplomacy
