catholic school in the xaverian brothers tradition

dear alumni and friends,

During this past year, St. Mary’s Ryken built new bridges to educating, connecting and celebrating our school community. SMR was one of the few high schools in the state of Maryland to open its doors to students from August to June, and we are proud of our stable foundation that was already in place that enabled us to continue our tradition of success.

In this report, we are proud to recognize all those who chose to give to SMR, whether financially or through the gift of their time and expertise. As alumni, donors, friends, partners and stakeholders, you joined together to continue to strengthen the bridge that provides support to our SMR community through the Annual Fund, scholarship funds, golf classic and virtual gala. This past year made us all aware of our interdependence, the importance of the common good and how these bedrock foundations make lasting bridges that lead us out of difficult times.

Three months into the 2021-22 school year, the trust placed in St. Mary’s Ryken in providing a faith-centered education through a safe environment, continued academic rigor and enduring personal relationships are evident. Enrollment is up, athletic and fine arts events have full schedules, homecoming and fall community events were well attended and the school year is as normal as possible. A new addition I am excited about this year is the creation of our National Flight Academy. This innovative STEM space will have 24 flight simulators that will enhance our Aerospace Engineering curriculum as well as provide camp and clinic opportunities for our future Knights. This high-tech educational opportunity is due in large part to the Patuxent Partnership who donated and funded the flight simulator lab.

Earlier this year, it was our tremendous pleasure to personally thank Maurice “Butch” Long ’66 and his family, who donated the funds for the new MIL Family STEM and Innovation Wing. This space houses a wind tunnel, virtual reality, 3-D printers, drone lab, robotics build area and space for STEM classes. Read about Mr. Long and the Innovation Wing’s dedication on Page 6.

On behalf of past, present and future generations of Knights, we are grateful to our St. Mary’s Academy, Ryken and St. Mary’s Ryken alumni for their support. I thank all those listed in this report for their kindness and generosity. You are bridge-builders. The time our students spend at St. Mary’s Ryken will build a bridge to their future, and we are thankful that you are an essential link in that journey.

Dr. Rick Wood

The St. Mary’s Ryken Caritas Resource Center, located in repurposed spaces in Paschal Hall, has been a hub of activity since mid-2020. Partnering with the Three Oaks Center, which helps provide the homeless in St. Mary’s County with stable housing and resources, Caritas has been the spot where members of the community can donate much-needed household items for homeless community members who are moving into stable housing. The donated items — such as furniture, kitchen items and other household essentials — give these individuals security, a sense of belonging and a less stressful experience as they transition to permanent housing.

Kylie Flerlage

“One of my fears entering SMR was making friends since I came from a public middle school. I learned very quickly that it was actually very easy to make friends, and the friends that I have made lasted my entire high school career. Also, SMR teachers may give you college-level assignments in some higher-level classes, but since the classes are smaller than most college classes, they can also guide you through the entire process. There is a great balance between the difficulty of the classes and the guidance provided by the teachers.”

Nikia Friday

am grateful that I attended SMR because it allowed me to explore all of my interests in order to determine what I wanted to do after high school. My favorite class at SMR was AP Psychology. It was so interesting to me to ‘be inside the brain’ and learn why people behave the way they do. My favorite extracurricular activity was cheerleading because the team was so uplifting and allowed me to feel like I was part of a family.”

Nikia is attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she is on the pre-med track studying neuroscience and is also minoring in Spanish.

“SMR truly provided a support system among its staff and students. If I was ever encountering any kind of issue or needed help, whether academically or socially, I always knew that I had multiple adults I could reach out to for assistance. Additionally, with such a close-knit community of students, you could always find friends to support you, whether that was by coming to games or shows, helping out with homework, or having friends to eat lunch with.

Matthew Harrer

“I am grateful that I attended St. Mary’s Ryken because of all the lasting memories and experiences over my four years. I have made lifelong friends and I am well prepared for life beyond high school. I will miss all my SMR teachers and friends, and especially annual events such as Spirit Week, Homecoming and Friday Night Lights football games in the SMR stadium.”

Matthew is attending Widener University, where he is continuing to play football and is majoring in mechanical engineering.

“St. Mary’s Ryken has many diverse classes to choose from to fulfill every student’s graduation needs and interests. Teachers are also in tune with the well-being of students and are very supportive. Teachers offer good advice and are mentors to their students.”

Long Family Attends STEM Wing Dedication

On Aug. 26, 2021, we celebrated alumnus Maurice “Butch” Long ’66 for his vision and commitment to St. Mary’s Ryken through funding the MIL Family STEM Innovation Wing. Mr. Long, his wife Cindy, along with Kitty Long, and Butch’s daughters Marisa ’92, Megan ’98 and her husband, Brandon, attended the ceremony. Mr. Long’s friend, Father Robert Joel-Cruz, flew in from Louisiana to bless the STEM Wing classrooms and spaces.

Located in renovated spaces in Paschal Hall, the MIL Family STEM Innovation Wing opened in September 2019. The timing was perfect for aerospace engineering, biomedical and computer science Scholars Program students to benefit from the flexibility,

collaboration and improved technology that the spaces bring to teaching and learning. The spaces include: a virtual reality system 3-D printers robotics arena drone and robotics build rooms wind tunnel CNC router and two large classrooms for labs and collaboration.

Mr. Long is deeply rooted in the fabric of the St. Mary’s Ryken community with an expansive legacy family spanning four generations, including graduates from

St. Mary’s Academy and Ryken High School. His three daughters graduated from St. Mary’s Ryken: Jennifer Long ’88†, Marisa Long Daley ’92, and Megan Long Sappington ’98. At Ryken High School, he was an honor student and a three-sport athlete receiving seven varsity letters.

Mr. Long served as SMR’s first lay board chairman and chairman of the finance and development committees of the Board of Directors from 1991 through 2005, providing leadership and vision for the school’s future. During his tenure on the board, Mr. Long spearheaded a multi-million-dollar campus renovation culminating in the building of the Brother Romuald Fine Arts Center. Upon his retirement from the board, he was voted chairman emeritus, acknowledging these efforts spanning his 14 years of service.

Because of his servant leadership, dedication, and contributions to SMR, he received the Pillar of the Community Award in 2007. In addition, his generous heart has benefitted numerous students through two scholarship funds he created, as well as several donations for capital improvements to our campus supporting athletics and our STEM curriculum. He is a true Knight!

After graduating from Ryken High School in 1966, Mr. Long received his M.S. degree from American University in Management and Computer Systems and his B.S. degree in Information Systems Management from the University of Maryland. Starting his career as a computer systems intern for the Department of Defense, he moved on to work at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. He later left government service to enter the private sector as a consultant for commercial financial institutions and federal government clients. After rising to the position of vice

president at The Orkand Corp., Mr. Long moved on to establish The MIL Corp. in 1980. He currently serves as its President and CEO. At MIL, he is responsible for the overall strategy and vision for the corporation, which provides innovative cybersecurity, engineering, financial, and information technology services to the federal government. MIL has consistently grown over the past 40 years serving numerous federal

government agencies, and now employs nearly 800 employees.

Mr. Long remains actively involved in various community organizations, including as past president of the Southern Maryland Navy Alliance and chairman of the Workforce Investment Board. He also oversees the MIL CARES program, which coordinates dozens of community service and charitable events sponsored by The MIL Corp.

Ann Riley, Parent to Ryan ’17 and Jared ’20

“ Sending our sons to St. Mary’s Ryken was the absolute best decision we ever made for our family. Ryan ’17 graduated from the Virginia Military Institute, is now married, and was just commissioned into the United States Air Force as a physicist. Jared ’20 is attending Liberty University in the School of Aeronautics and is also a student pilot at Southern Maryland Seaplanes. The pandemic brought a tough ending for the graduating seniors of 2020, but we are forever grateful that SMR made so many great things happen the graduation yard signs hand-delivered by the administration, the graduation ceremonies and videos, and even the planning of a 2020 reunion. (Even though it had to be cancelled, the effort was heart-warming.) As tough as it was for the Class of ’20, I know the Class of ’21 had their own hardships, but I was impressed with how St. Mary’s Ryken handled the situation. Both Ryan and Jared have expressed to me that attending SMR was the best decision in preparation for college!”

Jennifer Donald, Current Parent

“ Making the decision to have my children attend SMR was the best choice we could have ever made! As a parent of a senior and a freshman, I take solace in knowing that both of my children will be well equipped academically, socially and spiritually when they leave the school.

The staff has equipped them with not only knowledge but life skills. In the summer of 2021, my son was one of 20 selectees to attend Bowie State University’s cybersecurity camp. Based upon his teacher recommendations and the grades that he received while attending SMR, he was catapulted as a top candidate for this program.

The community, staff and student body at SMR is embracing and family oriented. If families are looking for a welcoming and caring environment, then SMR is their school!”

Diane Davenport, Current Parent

“ Choosing St. Mary’s Ryken High School was the best choice we could have made for our son. Our son has thrived and regained his love of learning through the challenging curriculum coupled with support and encouragement of his teachers. The principal, Dr. Catherine Bowes, is amazing! Her love of children and learning is exemplified through her staff. Dr. Bowes is committed to ensuring the academic success and character development of every student who attends St. Mary’s Ryken. Further, Dr. Bowes and her staff treat each student as a unique individual. Your child is not just a freshman, sophomore, etc. St. Mary’s Ryken High School is truly the best place to send your child to obtain a rigorous academic education in a nurturing Christian environment.”

Stacey Koviak, Parent to Sloan ’20

“We feel that the daily exposure to the Catholic faith is important for the whole person, and by sending our daughter to St. Mary’s Ryken, the humanities education she received has allowed her to continue the academics she loves at the University of Dallas.”

Caroline Neal, Parent of Sydney ’20

“ We are so appreciative of the stellar education Sydney received at SMR! The academic rigor at SMR laid a foundation for Sydney to be successful at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy.”

“ Cora’s experience at SMR has been filled with blessings. She has enjoyed the challenge of rigorous academics and has joyfully participated in the fabulous Scholars Program Theatre pathway. She has grown by leaps and bounds as a student, an actor and a singer. Additionally, Cora has had opportunities to be inducted into the National Honor Society and the International Thespian Society, which have assisted in her growth as a student leader. As a member of the Model United Nations club, she engaged in a statewide conference, acting as the delegation for Pakistan on the Social and Humanitarian Committee. Most importantly, SMR has formed Cora spiritually and academically as a Catholic citizen. We are so grateful for all of the wonderful opportunities SMR has provided our daughter!”

Kristi and Scott Getson, Parents of Matt ’20 and Luke ’21

“ The Getsons are forever grateful for the entire SMR staff, but especially for all the mentorship, guidance and support you all have provided to our sons! We know that our sons would not be where they are today without SMR contributions. Thank you! We love you all!”

Yvette Collins, Current Parent

“ St. Mary’s Ryken High School has met or exceeded all of my expectations for my daughter, Sydnie Collins, who is now a junior. The hands-on learning prepares each student for real-life problem-solving. The high level of professionalism from the staff is essential for successful learning experiences. The diversity, inclusion and academic programs foster young scholars who are determined and ambitious to change the world. The accountability extends beyond the classroom. It will show up in all areas of the students’ lives. My daughter is focused, driven and compassionate about building a foundation that will open doors full of possibilities. I owe a big part of her determination to the staff at SMR. The teachers are highly educated, nurturing and thoughtful. My child has grown in a way that she never would have at another school, and I tie this to the rigorous learning style and the warm environment that is presented at SMR. SMR recognizes the importance of instilling solid, character-building, and faith-growing practices, and because of their leadership and strong role models, my daughter can conquer any obstacles that she may face with the tools that she’s been given. If I had to do it all over again, I absolutely would choose St. Mary’s Ryken High School.”

make an impact through Direct and Legacy Giving

are you 70 ½ or older?

If you are 70½ or older, Internal Revenue Service rules stipulate that you take required minimum distributions (RMDs) each year from your tax-deferred retirement accounts. This additional taxable income may push you into a higher tax bracket and may also reduce your eligibility for certain tax credits and deductions. To eliminate or reduce the impact, consider making a direct fund transfer to St. Mary’s Ryken in any amount up to $100,000. It will satisfy your RMD amount for the year and can also be excluded from your taxable income. Make an impact and give today!

legacy giving inspires others

You can create a great legacy and inspire others by giving the gift of education. You can ensure that the St. Mary’s Ryken legacy is around for generations to come by making an investment in its future. Whether it’s a planned gift as part of your estate or charitable giving you can witness being appreciated now, contact Jerrilyn Borneman, director of development, at jerrilyn.borneman@smrhs.org or 301-373-4162 to learn how you can build your legacy for SMR and the Southern Maryland community.

The Annual Report reflects gifts received during the fiscal year 2020-21. If there are any errors or omissions, please accept our sincere apologies and contact the Development Office at advancement@smrhs.org or 301-373-4162.

faithful knights Who is a Faithful Knight? They are the Knighthood! Our steadfast supporters of St. Mary’s Ryken comprised of every facet of our community: alumni, faculty, staff, parents and friends who have contributed to the Annual Fund for at least 10 consecutive years. We are grateful for your trust and continued support.

The Virtual Knight Gala held on June 5 was a great Knight! Unfortunately, we could not attend in person, but many folks in our community participated by hosting “watch” parties and enjoying charcuterie and dessert boxes prepared by Ken’s Creative Kitchen.

Guests who purchased VIP party packs picked up their goodies before the virtual event. They received a few extra treats in their gift bags wine, beer and giveaways thanks to our sponsors, Bob Taylor Engineering, Personalized Therapy, C3 Innovations, Wesbanco, and Dugan, McKissick & Longmore.

We are grateful to all of our Giving Knights who purchased Knight Raffle tickets, participated in the Last Hero, bought tickets for our basket raffles, and participated in the live and silent auctions. You made it a victorious Knight, raising over $55,000 for St. Mary’s Ryken students!
