During the 2024-2025 school year, St. Mary’s Ryken (SMR) awarded $2.8 million in financial aid and scholarships to 516 students.
This year, the school invested approximately $4.5 million in affordability efforts. This includes the financial aid and scholarships mentioned above, as well as the costs to bridge the gap of more than $3,000 per student, which is funded through philanthropy and other revenue-generating efforts.
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Dear St. Mary’s Ryken Community,
As we reflect on the close of the 2024–2025 fiscal year, I am filled with deep gratitude for the unwavering generosity and dedication of our St. Mary’s Ryken family. Your commitment to our mission has created opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom and continue to shape the lives of our students in profound ways.
Throughout the year, your support made a visible and lasting difference. Gifts to the Knight Fund helped us keep an SMR education within reach for many families by bridging the gap between tuition and the true cost of providing a transformative Catholic education. Contributions toward scholarships and financial aid ensured that deserving students could thrive in an environment that challenges them academically, supports them personally, and encourages them spiritually.
We also made significant strides in building our endowment laying the foundation for long-term investment in academic innovation, student opportunities, and affordability. Thanks to a successful campaign and support from the State of Maryland, we were proud to install a new turf field in the MIL Family Stadium, enhancing the experience of our studentathletes and school community.
One of the greatest sources of encouragement this year was the strength of our community engagement. Our Board of Trustees and faculty and staff led by example with exceptional participation in giving. Alumni and alumni parents also reconnected with our school in remarkable ways, attending events throughout the year and reminding us all of the enduring bonds formed at St. Mary’s Ryken, Ryken High School and St. Mary’s Academy.
Because of you, our students had the chance to grow not only as scholars, but as servant leaders, artists, athletes, and young people grounded in faith. From service projects and spiritual retreats to academic achievements and creative performances, their experiences this year have been enriched by your generosity.
The pages of this 2024–2025 Annual Report offer a deeper look at the stories behind these accomplishments, as well as recognition of the donors who helped make them possible. I hope you will take a moment to explore the impact of your support. On behalf of the entire St. Mary’s Ryken community, thank you. Your partnership empowers us to continue forming young men and women who lead with purpose, compassion, and integrity.
God bless,
President

Tribute gifts hold a special place in our community because they honor the people and moments that shape our lives. Whether given in memory of a loved one, in celebration of a milestone, or in recognition of a teacher, classmate, or friend, these gifts carry deep personal meaning. “Our SMR Flight Academy has been blessed with a tremendous partnership with Offshore Aviation Group (OAG) in Piney Point, Maryland, allowing our aviation and engineering students to assemble and build their large-scale production OA-2E Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) in our own Flight Academy/STEM Laboratory facility under OAG’s supervision. This incredible initiative allows our aviation and engineering students real-world, hands-on experience in the design, manufacturing and production of complex aerospace systems. Under this partnership with OAG, our SMR Aviation and Engineering students get to actually expand their academic knowledge with a real-world application and develop their engineering team skills through an immersive experience. This entire program will be integrated into the core aviation and engineering curriculums for the 2025-2026 school year.”

NEW TURF FIELD AT MIL STADIUM
Two years of dedicated fundraising from the Knight Raffle, GivingTuesday, and Knight Gala, in addition to support from the entire community, has permitted the completion of this new field.
MIL Family Field has been home to incredible success over the past 15 years, competing in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) and earning 10 WCAC championships. Beyond competition, the field hosts weekly games and practices for six teams and hundreds of athletes, along with performances by our cheer and dance teams It also serves as a gathering space for students, families, and alumni, fostering the close-knit community that makes SMR special. Additionally, thousands of local youth benefit from the facility through sports practices, summer camps, elementary school relay races, Special Olympics events, movie nights, and other enrichment activities.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to this important project. Your generosity has provided a safe, high-quality facility that will serve our students and the broader community for years to come. projectareality-fundedbytheKnightRaffle,GivingTuesday,KnightGala,and majorgiftsfromourcommunitypartners.WearealsogratefulforaLegislative BondGrantco-sponsoredbySenatorJackBailey,DelegateToddMorgan,and DelegateBrianCrosby.
Support from our Board of Trustees, Faculty and Staff is so important because grant funders and major donors want to know that our internal community is passionate enough about SMR’s mission to put their financial resources behind it. SMR Community giving sets the stage for annual giving and capital campaigns.

SCHOLARSHIP LUNCHEON
Each year, St. Mary’s Ryken hosts a special Scholarship Luncheon, bringing together students who benefit from financial aid and scholarships with the generous donors who make these opportunities possible. This event allows donors to personally engage with the students they support, offering a firsthand view of how their philanthropy is making a meaningful impact. For students, it’s a chance to not only express their gratitude but also to learn important lessons about the power of giving and the profound impact of community support.
At this year’s luncheon, Judy Weiland and Georgia Harvey ’71 represented the Patrick X. Weiland ‘71 Scholarship. Established by Judy in memory of her late husband Pat, this scholarship honors his remarkable ability to inspire and uplift young people. Pat dedicated his professional life to helping troubled youth realize their potential. The scholarship provides support for academically talented students with financial needs. Judy and Georgia are pictured here with the scholarship recipients for the 2024-25 school year.

PARENTS & GRANDPARENTS OF ALUMNI
See Photos from Grandparents Day 2024
Alumni, Parents and Grandparents play a vital role in demonstrating their support for St. Mary’s Ryken through special events and contributions to the Knight Fund. Their involvement sends a powerful message to external funders: when our alumni and parents actively support SMR, it affirms the school’s value and worthiness of further philanthropic investment.

More About Planned Giving Opportunities
BAUER FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP
“Our motivation for establishing the Bauer Family Endowed Scholarship Fund was twofold. As we entered retirement, Mary and I wanted to ensure that our commitment to the community that welcomed us endures for generations to come. Additionally, the tax benefits of donating to a qualified charitable organization help alleviate potential future tax burdens for us and our heirs.”
-- Dr. Robert and Mary Bauer
P'94 GP'19, ‘28
