Dear Members of the St. Mary’s Dominican High School Community, As you read this edition of The Torch, we hope that you will see all the ways that Dominican students demonstrate their commitment to their growth and development in the attributes stated in the "Profile of a Dominican Graduate." Our students and our alumnae are amazing, and we are so proud of them! We especially congratulate the Class of 2018 and pray for each graduate as she pursues her dreams and aspirations. God calls each person in a unique way, and we trust that in the spirit of the Blessed Mother, Mary, the patroness of St. Mary’s Dominican High School, each will say yes to God’s unique call to her heart. The Salutatory Award, presented to the honor graduate who achieved the second highest cumulative grade point average in her program of studies, was merited by senior Caroline Marie Troendle, with Carolyn Favre.
Six graduates were selected by leadership, administration and faculty to receive the Veritas Award, the most prestigious Dominican award, in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments in Dominican’s four pillars of prayer, study, community, and service. Award recipients were Alex Donielle Williams, Cole Massett Pittman, Tia Angele Peck, Alison Jewel Dupré, Emily Catherine Douglass, and Lillian Adele Cerise, with Dr. Cynthia A. Thomas, President.

The Mother Mary Magdalen O’Farrell, O.P. Service Award, was presented by Dr. Cynthia A. Thomas to Brooklyn Marie Comeaux in recognition of her outstanding and dedicated service to St. Mary’s Dominican High School. Dominican life and growth are mirrored in the honorees’ reflection of the school’s philosophy by belief in God and respect for the dignity of all human beings.

Katherine Grace Mouton was presented the Sister Mary Ambrose Reggio, O.P. Alumnae Award by Ms. Katie McGlone ’98, President of the Alumnae Association. The honoree was selected by her classmates as most representative of Dominican spirit and ideals. Dominican’s motto, “To Praise, to Bless, to Preach,” is an integral part of the honoree's life, as is her commitment to truth, Veritas.
The American Legion Award, sponsored by the Henry Thomas Ross Post No. 137, was presented to Cole Massett Pittman who was selected by administration, faculty, staff and fellow students for reflecting the qualities of courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship and service.

The five finalists were among the 16,000 Semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit® Scholarship Program. As Finalists, these academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered this spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. Commended students were among the estimated 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation that are being recognized for their outstanding academic promise. Although Commended Students will not continue in the competition for National Merit® Scholarship awards, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.

orty-nine current students and recent graduates of St. Mary’s Dominican High School earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams. AP tests are scored on a scale of 1-5. The AP Scholar designation recognizes students who earned scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. The AP Scholar with Honor designation recognizes students who earned an average of 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more AP exams. The AP Scholar with Distinction designation recognizes students who earned an average score of 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scored 3 or higher on five or more AP exams. One recent graduate earned the designation of National AP Scholar. This designation is granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

Victoria Liu received the 2018 Joseph Adams Senior Scholarship from the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica (SHH), an honor society for high school students studying Spanish, for her dedication to the study of Spanish and excellent skills in the language. The $1,000 scholarship is awarded to only 60 students from over 2,400 chapters across the United States. Students become eligible by being an inducted member of SHH and then by submitting samples of their written and oral work in Spanish to a selection committee appointed by the American Association of Teaches of Spanish and Portuguese (AATPS).

ST. MARY’S DOMINICAN COLLEGE CORPORATION SCHOLARSHIP Caroline Bickerton received the St. Mary’s Dominican College Corporation Scholarship, presented by Sr. M. Dominic Savio Estorge, O.P. The annual scholarship is given in memory of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary who established, maintained and supported both St. Mary’s Dominican College and St. Mary’s Dominican High School. Graduating seniors who have been accepted and are attending a Catholic college or university have the opportunity to apply for the scholarship.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS AWARD Cole Pittman received the Knights of Columbus Award, given to the senior who has displayed the principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism and in doing so has displayed the highest degree of citizenship by helping others especially those less fortunate.

SCHOLASTIC ART & WRITING AWARDS Four St. Mary’s Dominican High School students have been recognized by Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for the Southwest Art Region-At-Large. Catherine Elvir earned an Honorable Mention for her photograph, New Orleans; Madison Manale received a Silver Key Award for her drawing, Gap; Sabrina Nguyen received an Honorable Mention for her drawing, Bleeding Orange; and Kristen Tholen received an Honorable Mention for her Mixed Media work, Mind Field, and a Silver Key in Drawing and Illustration for her work, Otter. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their remarkable work to the world through the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Through the Awards, students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships. Students across America submitted more than 330,000 original works last year in 29 different categories of art and writing.

NCTE ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS IN WRITING Juniors Marian Boyd and Julia Cazabon were recipients of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) 2018 Achievement Award in Writing. They are the only students from Louisiana that were honored nationally for their academic achievements in writing. The NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing is a school-based writing program established in 1957 to encourage high school students to write and to recognize some of the best student writers in the nation. US accredited schools in the United States, Canada, Virgin Islands and American schools abroad are eligible to nominate students who submit two writings – best (considered the best by the student) and themed (a writing based on the topic developed the Achievement Awards Committee). Teams of teachers across the nation judge entries. Across the country, 461 juniors were nominated by their English teachers. Of that number, 226 received Certificates for Superior Writing. This school term, Julia and Marian were students in Ms. Casey Lefante’s English IV Advanced Placement class.

The competition honors the Tricentennial of the City of New Orleans. “As we honor the Tricentennial of New Orleans, it’s important that we capture the voices from our community’s young people,” said Phyllis Taylor, president and CEO of the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation. Ella and Vivian are among 18 finalists selected by a panel of seven judges who reviewed original essays, graphic arts, poems and videos submitted by 47 students from 21 high schools in Orleans Parish. The 18 finalists will be featured in a film produced by high school senior Kelly Yu with assistance from internationally renowned artist and design consultant Xiao Xiao. One finalist will become the grand prize winner and receive an $1,800 cash award. Additionally, the winning student’s school will receive $18,000. The winner will be announced in October at the opening of the Taylor Education Center.

ARCHDIOCESAN YOUTH LEADERSHIP CELEBRATION AND AWARDS At the annual Youth Leadership Celebration and Awards presentation held at St. Louis Cathedral, 14 Dominican students were among the honorees recognized for their commitment to their parishes in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. There were 39 parish youth ministries represented, with 102 teenagers receiving Outstanding Parish Youth Awards. The national St. Timothy Award for leadership, at both the parish and archdiocesan levels, was presented to 15 high school students.
St. Mary’s Dominican High School Senior Caroline Bickerton was named one of more than 4,500 candidates in the 2018 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Caroline was among candidates selected from nearly 3.6 million students who are expected to graduate from US high schools in 2018. Inclusion in the US Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 54th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high schools seniors. Scholars are selected based on superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.

Described as more than simply an athletic award, the young people who are honored are well-rounded members of their church parishes who witness to the gospel by their lives. Dominican honored faculty and staff for service years ranging from five to 55 years. Sr. M. Dominic Savio Estorge, O.P., recognized for 55 years of service, has a distinguished tenure that included faculty, administrative, and leadership positions. Sr. Savio also taught English, served as assistant principal, and was president from 1994 to 1997. For 12 years, she served on the General Counsel for the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary. Currently, she is cataloging the school’s archives while continuing her work in the Attendance Office. Dr. Cynthia A. Thomas, President of St. Mary’s Dominican High School, was honored by Girl Scouts Louisiana East with the Outstanding Woman Award. The award presentation was at the first annual Girl Scouts Juliette Low Leadership Luncheon that celebrates outstanding individuals, businesses and organizations that exemplify the legacy of Girl Scouts of the USA’s founder, Juliette Low. Low outgrew the trappings of an upper-class society life to create an organization for young women, and integrated leadership, self-confidence, responsibility, integrity, decision-making, teamwork, outdoor skills, philanthropy and equality for all. “The award recipients were selected based on the positive impact they have on the children in our communities. Each recipient has not only supported Girl Scouts, but they have empowered girls and women of the New Orleans community, in general,” said Jackie Daniels ’61, a member of the luncheon committee. Dominican’s president since 1997, Dr. Thomas has served many years in Catholic education, holding positions in faculty and administration. Prior to becoming president, she served as school principal for five years. She was also assistant principal and a faculty member at Brother Martin High School. At Dominican and at Ursuline Academy Elementary School, she was on the faculty. Currently, she serves on the Executive Board of the Dominican Association of Secondary Schools, Boys Hope Girls Hope of Greater New Orleans Board of Directors, and the Archbishop Shaw Advisory Council. Dr. Thomas received a Doctor of Education from Spalding University, Master of Education from University of Holy Cross, and Master of Religious Education from Loyola University New Orleans.

Volleyball Pink Game
St. Mary’s Dominican High School and Mount Carmel Academy Team Up in the Fight Against Breast Cancer
On October 4, St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s Siena Gym was a sea of fans wearing pink of many shades when the “Paint The Pitt” Pink Volleyball Games marked its ninth year. Taking to the courts were 8th grade, Junior Varsity, and Varsity teams from Dominican and Mount Carmel Academy that played to a packed crowd. During opening ceremonies, breast cancer survivor Mrs. Rere Avegno, grandmother of Dominican senior Payton Nunez, led the prayer. Team members from the two schools presented family members with pink roses. Earlier in the day, Café du Monde was on Dominican’s campus and donated 100 percent of their sales of beignets and coffee toward game proceeds. Game day fare included Plum Street Snoballs, Parade of Prizes, raffle, bake sale, and the Dominican Dad’s Club concessions. Those proceeds, plus revenue from the tickets and t-shirts sales, totaled $13,446.66 to support the Tulane Cancer Center Patient Relief Fund. The fund provides financial assistance to breast cancer patients and their families. In January, Dominican volleyball team members and coaches joined students and coaches from Mount Carmel Academy, Archbishop Chapelle, Cabrini and St. Scholastica high schools, and Loyola University to present the Tulane Cancer Center medical staff with a check for $41,234 from the schools’ Pink Games fundraisers. Jessica Chatellier, Chair of Dominican’s Health/Physical Education Department and Volleyball Coach, said for the Dominican community, “It is an honor that we get to participate in such a great event. Everyone who takes part in the Pink Game, is helping someone in our community deal with the financial stress that cancer can cause. We started this event nine years ago and we have grown so much. I can’t wait to see what we do in the future.”

he Lou Reilly Award is presented in memory of a wonderful Dominican graduate. For many years she had served the community as an educator with a special love for athletics and student athletes. She saw athletic competition and sportsmanship as an important part of the Dominican High School spirit. The award recognizes the athlete who continually tries to improve her skills and listens to her coaches and teammates. This athlete encourages her teammates and gives her full effort at each moment. The student athletes themselves have a nominating vote in the selection of award recipients. The final decision is left to the discretion of the coaches.

Community Involvement Sweet Treats
Dominican students brought a bounty of their home baked sweets as a special gift of appreciation for the New Orleans Police Department and Emergency Medical Services. Representatives from NOPD Headquarters and EMS stopped by to pick up the sweets.
Service Thanksgiving Baskets
The annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive collected donations from students, alumnae and athletic teams for 88 Thanksgiving baskets that were distributed in conjunction with St. Rita Parish and Xavier University to provide 700 Thanksgiving meals for families in the Gert Town community, Dominican’s neighbors. The Christian Leadership Council organized the baskets and assisted with pick-up. A donation from the Retired National Football League Players Association helped with the purchase of $25 gift cards and Leidenheimer Baking Company donated 120 bags of fresh rolls and 60 bags of fresh breadcrumbs. St. Rita Catholic Church and Elementary School and Mary Queen of Peace in Mandeville donated turkeys to complete the Thanksgiving baskets that Xavier University Community Outreach Center delivered to the families.

Freshmen Retreat The Freshmen Class Retreat focused on the theme of “Love and Service.” A hallmark of the retreat was preparation of a community meal for women and children at a local domestic shelter. Students prepared a meal of salad, jambalaya, garlic bread, dip, yogurt parfaits, and cupcakes. Mercy bags, covered with the students’ handwritten messages of encouragement and support, were filled with socks, soap, shampoo, bottled water, and other essential toiletries.
Sophomore Retreat The Sophomore Retreat began with a talk on ‘What does it mean to be a daughter of God?’ Students enjoyed group talks and activities focused on discovering beauty, appreciating the gift that God created them to be, and learning how to connect with God through music and Scripture. During one group activity, students made Psalm 23 bracelets for the residents of Eden House.
Community Involvement Adopt-A-Family Dominican’s Annual Adopt-AFamily adopted 59 families (a total of 182 individuals), who are connected to the Dominican community. Each religion class adopted a family and the students formed small groups to adopt individuals. Funds were also collected from the faculty and staff to adopt three of the families and also provide diapers and wipes for the shelter. Christian Leadership Council officers organized the gifts and staged them in Alumnae Hall for pick-up by Dad’s Club members who packed their vehicles and made deliveries to the agencies.
Second Harvest Canned Food Drive

St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s 19th annual food drive collected 30,352 cans of food and dry goods for the Second Harvest Food Bank, representing an estimated 25,071 pounds of donations. Emily Slazer, Food Sourcing Specialist – East at Second Harvest Food Bank said the donation will “equate to 20,893 meals for families across south Louisiana. Dominican has been one of Second Harvest Food Bank’s top five highest grossing food drives the last several years, and we’re so grateful for your support!” Jill Cabes, Vice President of Dominican Catholic Identity, called the food drive “one of Dominican’s major whole school service projects that allows us to put our principles of Catholic Social Teaching into action. There is a building sense of excitement and urgency to reach our goal as we approach the end of the drive and it really fosters a sense of community among our student body.” Congratulations to the students and the religion teachers who spearheaded the drive’s teams. This year’s canned food drive was an increase of 10,124 over the 2017 drive.

CHRISTMAS ACROSS THE MILES The Dominican family reached across the country and oversees, sending Christmas cards signed with personal messages to a child in a Portland, Maine hospital and to US troops far away from home. Working in groups, students created Christmas cards for Jacob. In response to young Jacob’s one request for cards from anyone "inspired to reach out" to help him celebrate his last Christmas early. Veritas Volunteers helped add to Christmas cheer for servicemen and women who are stationed overseas. Club members worked together on personalizing Christmas cards for the US troops. Each card had messages of gratitude for their service and bravery, prayers for them and their families, and Christmas blessings. Students Madison Ferguson and Emily Hemelt conduct GMO Experiment.
BEST SCIENCE! Mrs. Janine Koenig’s Biology class conducted a BEST Science! experiment to learn about genetically modified organisms (GMO). The experiment was part of the school’s participation in “BEST (Bioscience Enrichment for Students and Teachers) Science! with the objective of advancing an interest among New Orleans area high school students in biomedical research and health sciences and to ultimately stimulate further education and vocation in these areas.

STOP THE BLEED In the Sr. Ambrose Reggio, O.P. Gymnasium, Student Council members gathered around tables to learn the ABCs of responding to lifethreatening bleeding injuries during an emergency. Using machines that simulated bleeding, each student took a turn applying compression and packing a wound site. They also learned the proper way to apply tourniquets. These basic steps can be lifesaving, said Dr. Jennifer Avegno ('89), an Associate Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Director of Community Health Relations and Engagement, Associate Residency Program and Student Clerkship Director. Dr. Avegno, an emergency physician at University Medical Center (UMC) led the course with her colleagues from the UMC Trauma Unit.

WORLD GEOGRAPHY CLASS SWEPT AWAY WITH ASSIGNMENT World Geography students in Mrs. Amy Triche Ferguson’s class studied in the first quarter different themes of geography, human and physical systems, and mapping. In the second quarter, they worked with ArcGIS, a mapping program that uses Geographic Information Systems to create a presentation of geographic information merged with content. They planned a three-day vacation anywhere in the Pacific World. Students researched their locations and planned a day-by-day itinerary consisting of the places to eat and activities that also had an educational component. Students included visits to volcanos, world heritage sites, parks, and aquariums. “The story map is a unique presentation tool that has a heavy influence on visual component,” explained their teacher. "Needless to say, their projects were hard to put down as they swept you away to some of the most beautiful Pacific destinations that the world has to offer.”

SYNDAVER™ SURGERY SURPRISE In science teacher Ms. Anjel Guitroz’s human anatomy class, juniors and seniors had two surprises. Instead of reviewing exam material, their teacher instructed them to put on surgical gloves, masks and caps. A “patient” needed emergency surgery and they were going to learn how to do a surgeon’s knot and a running loop stitch. The patient was the SynDaver™ Surgical Model. As they gathered around the patient, Ms. Guitroz reminded them, “You have to be comfortable with the orientation of the needle.” Students were improving with practice when two visitors arrived. Seminarians Jeff Merritt and Dr. Davis Ahimbisibwe had heard about the SynDaver and wanted to see its use in a classroom setting. Merritt was in his second year of medical school at Tulane University before transferring to Notre Dame Seminary. Dr. Davis was a physician in Uganda, but also had a calling.
HIDDEN FIGURES In celebration of Black History Month, students requested a showing of the movie, “Hidden Figures” – based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly. It tells the incredible and inspiring story of Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson – brilliant African-American women who worked at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The three mathematicians were the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit – a stunning achievement that restored the nation's confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.
CREATIVE CODING Chloe Bott, a student in Ms. Charlene Ford’s Computer Science class, applies coding skills from the Microsoft Imagine Academy’s Creative Coding of Games and Apps curricula that provides high school students with realworld technology skills they need to be successful in college and career.
DOMINICAN COLLECTS 700+ T-SHIRTS FOR MISSION TRIP Responding to a request from the seminarians at Notre Dame Seminary, the St. Mary’s Dominican High School community collected more than 700 T-shirts for girls, ages 12 to 18. The seminarians will bring the T-shirts with them on their December mission trip to Nicaragua where they will work with St. Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity.

ENGLISH CLASS WELCOMES VISITING DOMINICAN SISTERS FROM AFRICA A December visit of Dominican Sr. Juliet Mwamba, O.P. and Sr. Pelagia Siziba, O.P from Africa added a new dimension for seniors in Mrs. Cathy Rice’s English V Honors class meeting in the Disputatio Room to discuss Dear Ijeawele, or A Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions, by acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Adichie wrote a personal email to her friend, Ijeawele, who asked Adichie’s advice on how to raise her daughter as a feminist. The 9,221 word essay, posted by Adichie on her official Facebook page on October 12, 2016, was later adapted into a book and published on March 7, 2017. The essay is in the form of a letter to her friend. Adichie was inspired to publicize the letter after becoming increasingly aware of what she recognized as ongoing gender inequality in her native Nigeria. After observing the class, Sr. Juliet Mwamba, O.P. from Zambia found the students’ discussion fruitful as they took time to research and made connections to their reading from their daily living. Sr. Pelagia Siziba, O.P. from Zimbabwe was impressed by the students’ critical thinking, reflection, and in-depth study. “The students were broadminded and that is promising for the future,” she said. After their visit, the Dominican Sisters returned to Columbus, Ohio, where they were studying.
PATHS INFORMED BY FAITH For Angie Thomas, the career paths she has taken have been informed by faith. During a visit to Anne Comiskey’s Law Studies class, she shared with students life events and choices that led her to serve today as Chief Executive of the Woman’s New Life Center in New Orleans and Baton Rouge. The Woman’s New Life Center is a Christian organization that promotes the sanctity of human life, the dignity of women, and the sacredness of sexuality through medical and mental health services. This professional counseling and medical clinic provides services and resources for women who are facing an unplanned pregnancy. Following graduation from the Manship School of Mass Communications at Louisiana State University, Mrs. Thomas studied law at Loyola University Law School. “I had plans to be a pro-life attorney,” she told the class. “When I got to law school I was humbled. We did not touch on constitutional law until the second year. I began to question if I was in the right place.” In 2004, Mrs. Thomas received her Juris Doctor, graduating cum laude. She also was trained through the Blackstone Legal Fellowship, an intensive training in Christian worldview principles and how they apply to the study and interpretation of law.

MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL CELEBRATES CULTURES FROM AROUND THE WORLD The world’s unique cultures were celebrated at St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s Multicultural Festival, presented by the school’s Multicultural Club during a student assembly that opened with a student fashion show featuring a colorful array of dresses from countries, including South Africa, Spain, Mexico, India, and Vietnam. Martial arts demonstrations, vocal performances, and Hip Hop, Irish and Cuban dances were part of the annual Multicultural Festival. Returning as guest performers were students from Lafayette Academy who performed an African Dance that received a standing ovation. Singer Robin Barnes, a 2005 Dominican alumna, closed the festival with the assembly joining her in song.

ST. MARY´S DOMINICAN HIGH SCHOOL CLASS CONNECTS WITH HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR Classmate Tai Sutherland, a sophomore, described the interviewing experience “an enriching lesson in how negative experiences do not always condemn people to lead sad lives. I learned that there is always hope in God and when in doubt, trust your faith.” Although Junior Katherine Mazzanti had studied the Holocaust in class, Mr. Gutter’s story offered a completely new perspective. “It was amazing how he was able to revisit the worst times in his life to inform others. I loved how we was able to rebuild his life after the war and meet his wife.”

When World War II broke out, Pinchas Gutter was seven years old. His family fled to Warsaw and were incarcerated in the Warsaw Ghetto for three and a half years until April 1943. Their bunker was discovered and they were deported to the death camp, Majdanke. When they arrived at the camp, Mr. Gutter was separated from his family. It was the last he saw of his father, mother, and twin sister who were killed by the Nazis. Mr. Gutter was sent to a work camp and passed through several other concentration camps, including Buchenwald. Toward the end of the war, he was forced on a death march from Germany to Therenstadt in Czechoslovakia. He barely survived. On May 8, 1945 the Russians liberated him. He and other children orphaned by the war were brought to Britain, under the auspices of the United Nations Relief and Administration. Seventy-five years later, Mr. Gutter shared his life experiences with a group of students at St. Mary’s Dominican High School. Grouped in front of a television screen in The Ermina Wadsworth | Azby Fund Technology Center, students in the Advanced Placement Spanish Class engage in a “virtual conversation” with a holographic Mr. Gutter. They are connected via Skype to the Holocaust Museum of Houston where the museum’s Education Outreach Coordinator Laurie
Garcia communicates with Spanish teacher Mrs. Claudia Vallejo and her students. The following day, the students interviewed Ms. Garcia in Spanish. Last October, the museum opened New Dimensions in Technology, which will be shown through March 2018. The project was made in collaboration between the University of Southern California’s Institute of Technology and Shoah Foundation – dedicated to making audio-visual interviews with survivors and witnesses of the Holocaust and other genocides a compelling voice for education and action. Advanced filming techniques, specialized display technology and nextgeneration national language processing create an experience where students ask Mr. Gutter questions and he replies. Mr. Gutter is one of the pioneers of this innovative project and the first person to test-drive the new technology. To date, 15 survivors’ testimonies have been captured by more than 50 cameras as each survivor is asked 1,600 questions addressing topics ranging from pre-war life through the Holocaust and beyond. Junior Dina Alawamleh said the interaction with Mr. Gutter’s hologram impressed on her, “that we should value human life and not take it for granted. We should all be thankful for the life we have been given and make the most of it.”
The museum’s Director of Visitor and Volunteer Services, and the Curatorial Assistant who stopped by during the class session were impressed by the students’ questions and their thoughtful comments; they requested a copy of the questions. Ms. Garcia commended Mrs. Vallejo for exposing students to such important issues. “Prejudice, discrimination, hate speech, and violence against a targeted group does not just happen during the Holocaust – as you are well aware, we have seen these issues play out throughout history and are still issues we face throughout the world today. The connections one can make between the past and present are incredibly alarming and disheartening. What is hopeful is that there are educators like you that are providing students with the opportunity to reflect on this history and consider ways they can be Upstanders.”

Mr. Gutter had dedicated his life to enlightening and educating others. His memoir, Memories in Focus, was published in 2017. He tells his story, “for the purpose of improving humanity, drop by drop, by drop. Like a drop of water falls on a stone and erodes it, so hopefully, by telling my story over and over again, I will achieve the purpose of making the world a better place.”

ROBOTICS TEAMS POST WINS AT STATE QUALIFIER St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s robotics teams brought home wins from the State Qualifier competition. The Dominican Valkyries, made finalist for the Motivate Award. The Dominican Indiana Janes took finalist place for the Connect Award, the Think Award, and the Innovate Award. ROBOTICS TEAMS COMPETE AT REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP At the February 3 Louisiana FIRST® Technical Challenge (FTC) Regional Championship held at University of New Orleans, St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s two robotics teams competed. The Dominican Indiana Janes were a finalist for the Think Award. The Dominican Valkyries won the Motivate Award and placed 8th for the Alliance Section. They were selected by an Alliance Team to play in the semi-finals.

DEBS CAPTURE STATE WINS The Dominican Debs captured several state wins at the January 13 and 14 American All-Star Louisiana State Dance Competition held in Lafayette. Debs coach is Fran Moran and moderator is Sina Baldwin. SOLO DIVISION: Nine soloists were chosen (three from each division) as finalists out of the 70 that competed. The Debs had three of those nine, one in each division. Junior High (6th, 7th, 8th graders): Katelin Obletz – finalist and 2nd place overall; Junior High School (9th, 10th graders): Rylie McClusky – finalist and 2nd place overall; Senior High (11th, 12th graders): Maddie McGovern – finalist and 2nd place overall. DUET DIVISION: Deb Captains Maddie McGovern and Virginia Babin competed and tied for first place, however, following a tiebreaker rule they received second place. ENSEMBLE DIVISION: The Debs entered Hip Hop and Jazz routines for ensemble competition (a group of 3-10 girls). Out of the 14 ensembles, the Debs were awarded: Hip Hop Ensemble – 2nd place overall; Jazz Ensemble – 4th place overall. TEAM DIVISION: Hip Hop – 1st place Division III, 2nd place overall State, Choreography Award, and Technique Award. Pom – 1st place Division III, 2nd place overall State; Jazz – 2nd place Division III, 3rd place overall State.
Color Guard DOMINICAN COLOR GUARD TEAM PLACES IN LOCAL AND REGIONAL COMPETITIONS The Color Guard closed the year with a third place ranking in the Louisiana Mississippi Color Guard and Percussion Circuit Winter Guard in the Scholastic Regional AA division, and received fourth place at the Winter Guard International Sport of the Arts regionals held in Florida. Special School Events Walking to Walmsley Gala Alumnae and friends of St. Mary’s Dominican High School enjoyed the “Walking to Walmsley” Gala and Auction on March 3. The evening’s festivities on campus kicked off with a Patron Party and entertainment by the Dominican Jazz Band. St. Joseph Altar

The St. Joseph Altar at St. Mary’s Dominican High School drew students, alumnae and visitors during its viewing on campus in celebration of the Feast of St. Joseph. (C) Students gathered around the altar during a morning blessing by Fr. Joseph Palermo. The altar, built in three tiers to represent the Holy Trinity, was adorned with breads, cakes and other confections representing different religious icons and symbols. (D) 3,000 cookies were prepared for the altar by alumnae and students. Cakes took the shape of the Pascal Lamb and the Holy Bible. There were Sicilian confections, called Cuccidatae. Made from a simple recipe of pastry dough with sweetened fig filling, these decorative breads had intricate carvings. The staff symbol harkened to the legend of St. Joseph’s walking stick with blooms of lilies. Circular shapes symbolized Everlasting Love, a cross for the Crucifixion of Christ, and a heart for the Love of the Virgin Mary. Baskets of fresh fruit represented Fullness of Life and Resurrection; Redfish – the Bounty from the Sea. Clusters of palm branches in vases represented Christian Martyrdom and Victory of Death. Statues of other saints, candles and photographs of deceased loved ones were also part of the altar. In a frame were the names of deceased sisters from the Dominican community, the earliest entry from 1867. Dominican will donate the food and monetary donations to a local charity.

Alumnae Association Appreciates Dominican Personnel
Special Alumnae Events Breakfast with Baby Jesus Children of all ages celebrated the Christmas season with family and friends at St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s annual Breakfast with Baby Jesus. Nearly 400 attended the December 9th event, hosted by the Alumnae Association. A Living Nativity, presented by the Dominican High School Drama Club, took center stage in the Sr. Ambrose Reggio, O.P. Gymnasium.
At crafts tables, young visitors made angel necklaces, snow globes, ornaments, and decorated Rice Krispie treats. Mrs. Claus read Christmas stories to attentive listeners and children took keepsake photos with Santa Claus. Entertainment by merry elves added to the festive celebration.

Special Alumnae Events Lenten Evening of Reflection At the Lenten Evening of Reflection, alumnae, family, and friends of Dominican gathered in Alumnae Hall for an opening reconciliation service led by Chaplain Fr. John Restrepo, O.P. Before the celebration of Mass, there was a Communal Act of Contrition, with Fr. Restrepo, Fr. Bob Massett, and Fr. Charlie Johnson, O.P. giving individual reconciliation. The written offerings by those who attended were burned at the Easter Vigil Fire on Holy Saturday at St. Dominic Church.
Easter Egg Roll A spring day welcomed over 400 children and their families at St. Mary’s Dominican High School’s annual Easter Egg Roll, presented by the Alumnae Association. An Easter Egg hunt in The Peace Garden delighted toddlers, while the older children canvased the Siena Gym for a bounty of brightly colored eggs. Finders of gold eggs discovered inside of them a special ticket for selecting a prize. Children of all ages enjoyed the petting zoo where rabbits, chickens, pigs, goats, and other four-legged friends got close to Easter Egg Roll guests. Children also made colorful crafts and met the Easter Bunny for photos. A highlight was the release of nearly 200 butterflies to help replenish their depleting population.

Alumnae Homecoming weekend
t. Mary’s Dominican High School’s alumnae, representing more than 50 classes, celebrated the annual homecoming weekend with a Thanksgiving Mass on campus and a luncheon at Chateau Country Club. At the luncheon, they saluted fellow alumnae. The Honorable Amy Coney Barrett was honored as Alumna of the Year and Gina Bagnetto Waters received the St. Catherine of Siena Preaching Award. The honorees are from the Class of 1990. Congratulations to the 2018 Alumnae Award Recipients. Honorees, whose lives exemplify the ideals that Dominican tries to instill in its students as described by the Profile of a Dominican Graduate, were nominated by fellow alumnae.

Amy Coney Barrett ’90 Amy Coney Barrett's peers recognized her as a woman who instills Christian moral values while urging the practice of ethical behaviors as demonstrated through her dedication to family, public service or career. She earned a Juris Doctorate from the University of Notre Dame, where she was recognized with the highest honors awarded and served as executive editor of Notre Dame Law Review. Barrett clerked for Judge Laurence H. Silberman of the United States Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and for Associate Justice Antonin Scalia of the United States Supreme Court. As an associate at Miller, Cassidy, Larroca & Lewin in Washington, D.C., she litigated constitutional, criminal, and commercial cases in both trial and appellate courts.
From 2010-2016, Barrett served by appointment of the Chief Justice on the Advisory Committee for the Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure. She serves on the faculty of Notre Dame’s Law School. In November 2017, she was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Barrett has been published widely in the areas of federal courts, constitutional law, and statutory interpretation. Her scholarship in these fields has been published in leading journals, including the Columbia, Virginia, and Texas Law Reviews. She and husband, Jesse, are active members of St. Joseph Parish in South Bend, Indiana, and members of "People of Praise," a charismatic ecumenical community. They are the parents of seven children among whom two were adopted from Haiti and another who has special needs.

Gina Bagnetto Waters received the St. Catherine of Siena Preaching Award in recognition for preaching the Holy Word by the example of her life and being an inspiration to those who seek Truth, the Resurrection and the Life. Upon the completion of her degree in geology at Louisiana State University, Waters worked as an environmental geologist. However, her work was not the sole focus of her vocational journey. Waters’ affiliation with the LSU Catholic Center increased her involvement in the Catholic Church, evangelization, and faith formation. She served the homeless, taught CCD, became a lector, and served on the Parish Council of St. George Church in Baton Rouge. Currently residing in Houston, she and her friend Alicia Goodwin, co-founded the Marian Servants of the Incarnate Wisdom®. In 2015, Gina was instrumental in opening the first satellite campus of the Cenacle of Our Lady of Divine Providence School of Spiritual Direction where she later became Director. In 2016, Waters became the Director of the Marian Servants. She is President of the Incarnate Wisdom House of Prayer Board of Directors. At St. Rose of Lima Parish, she serves as Spiritual Director, Healing Prayer Minister, Lector, and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Eucharist. Gina and her husband, Matt Waters, have three children and continue to live in Houston.

Dominican personnel enjoyed food, fun and wellness, compliments of the Dominican Alumnae Board and Association in appreciation of faculty and staff for all they do, each and every day, to make St. Mary’s Dominican a wonderful place.
The Washington, DC Alumnae Chapter hosted 31 Dominican seniors to kick-off their week of Close-Up! The alumnae in attendance told them about their experiences in DC and the students shared their interests, involvement at Dominican, and future college choices. Teacher and chaperone Randy Duplantis said that the visit was very beneficial for the girls. "They were able to connect with and see future possibilities with a room full of successful Dominican women!"

Career Day St. Mary’s Dominican High School students gained insights into a range of career paths during the school’s annual Career Day. Thirty alumnae were among the guest speakers who shared their career experiences and advice on a range of professions, including engineering, medicine, military, engineering, finance, law, nursing, marketing, and business. All About Alumnae 1955 Merle Higgins Guerin is the recipient of The St. Matthew the Apostle Service Award in recognition of her dedication to St. Matthew the Apostle Parish and particularly for her efforts as a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and her selfless service to the community.
1965 After 43 years at Ochsner Hospital, Jeanne Ragas Silva has retired! She worked in the Left Ventricular Assist Device Clinic handling outpatient care. Some of her many roles included Staff Nurse, Charge Nurse and Unit Instructor on Cardiology and CCU, Clinical Educator for all nurses and specific educational needs for CCU/Cardiology and ICU, and Clinical Nurse for hospital patients under the care of a cardiologist.

1975 Judy Perry Martinez received the New Orleans Bar Association Presidents' Award. This award is the highest level of recognition from the Association and recognizes professional excellence, integrity, and dedication to service in the highest ideals of citizenship. Judy is also the recipient of the David A. Hamilton Lifetime Achievement Award from the Louisiana State Bar Association. 1984 Sheri A. Salvagio is the new Executive Director of Institutional Advancement at Archbishop Chapelle High School. In this position, she will oversee and manage all aspects of the Advancement Office, including the Directors of Admissions, Alumnae, Public Relations, and Special Events. 1988 2017 Louisiana State Teachers Association Outstanding Middle School Science Teacher award was presented to Alisha Carmouche Capstick. A teacher at Triste Middle in Chalmette. 1989 Bronwyn Mitchell Strong’s book, Roost: Confessions of a First-Time Chicken Farmer, will be available this fall. Find out what happens when two first-time chicken farmers from the suburbs open their home and hearts to four chicks from the hatchery. Chicken history, science, politics, pop culture, religion, social justice, and even psychosis are woven throughout in an informative and eccentric voice. Readers will never look at a chicken, or an egg, in the same way. Dr. Jennifer Avegno, LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans professor and administrator, was appointed by New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell to serve as the Director of the New Orleans Department of Health. Dr. Avegno is the director of LSU Emergency Medicine’s Division of Community Health Relations and Engagement. “Dr. Avegno brings tremendous experience and a deep commitment to helping people to her new role as our City’s Health Director,” said Mayor Cantrell.
1994 Tanya Price completed her PhD at University of Holy Cross and was named Principal of Kehoe France School. 1998 Kristin E. Bauer is the Director of Operations for Guard-One Protective Services in New Orleans. She was voted as a new member of the Kenner Business Association with a focus on Civic and Community Awareness. Last October, Kristin attended the Senior Staff Briefings for Guard-One's parent company, Security Solutions of America at their corporate office in Matthews, North Carolina. 2000 Elizabeth Wilde Wilson, Tulane University's newest Assistant Dean of Finance, was selected out of 57 candidates and promoted from Director of Internal Audit. 2003 Chelsea Bernard is a Speech Language Pathologist serving our nation’s Veterans at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System in New Orleans. 2004 Kathleen Childress earned a PhD as a Nurse Practitioner from Loyola University. She is currently working in the Emergency Room at Central Texas Medical Center. December 3, 2016 she married Michael Doyle.
Erica Jones matched into the Vascular Neurology Fellowship at Univeristy of Texas Houston. She will complete her Neurology Residency at Emory University School of Medicine.

Class Connections 2005 Stephanie Clary was awarded the Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) designation. CFRE International named her a CFRE. A Senior Development Officer for Bridge House/Grace House, she joins over 5,500 professionals around the world who hold the CFRE designation. Individuals granted the CFRE credential have met a series of standards set by CFRE International which include tenure in the profession, education, demonstrated fundraising achievement and a commitment to service to not-for-profit organizations. 2009 Samantha Marie Thiaville, an LSU 2013 graduate with a Bachelor of Science, earned a Doctorate of Pharmacy from Xavier University of Louisiana, Summa Cum Laude. She passed the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination and the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination. She is employed by CVS as a registered and licensed pharmacist for the State of Louisiana. 2012 Sarah Carr was named head coach of the Cabrini High School swim team and full-time physical education teacher for the 2017-2018 school year. Throughout her Dominican years, Carr was a member of the swim team and named captain her senior year. She was also captain of the cross country and track teams. After high school, Carr was a member of the triathlon team at the University of Alabama, where she earned her Bachelor of Education degree in Human Performance Exercise Science. For the past five years, Carr has also served as an assistant coach for the Crescent City Swim Club and as a private swim instructor for the USA Swimming year-round program. “Swimming is a unique, fun, and rewarding sport,” said Carr. “The benefits of swimming and other high school athletics help to prepare young women for their futures. From the pool to the classroom, I hope to help students gain the knowledge about goal setting, time management, and exercising that will allow them to be successful in their time at Cabrini.” 2013 Samantha Elizabeth Ramey graduated Summa Cum Laude from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication (Major in digital advertising; Minor in business). She was a University Medalist, Member of Kappa Tau Alpha, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, and Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.
1973 & 2003 In December, Rhonda Ridgley Jones ’73, Alison Jones Brown ’03, and Jennifer Lotz Williams ’03 laid wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC as a part of the Wreaths Across America effort to remember fallen U.S. Veterans, honor those who serve, and teach children the value of freedom. Alison’s husband, Tom, is a cavalry scout in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, based in Fort Bragg, NC. Jenn’s husband, Lear, is an AV 8B Harrier instructor pilot based in Cherry Point, NC.
1987 & 1997 The Good Shepherd School hosted “Around the World, The Good Shepherd Way,” 2017 Annual Dancing with the Stars competition/fundraiser. Participants included the dance team of Theresa Bertucci Truxillo ’97 and Paul Spitzfaden, Dominican’s Athletics Director and Dominican Dad, with choreographer Fran Gandolfi Moran ’87. They won the Fan Favorite Award based on crowd vote.
1987, 1990, 1993 Three alumnae traveled together to Augusta Georgia to complete the Ironman 70.3 race in September. It consists of a 1.2 mile swim in the Savannah River, 56-mile bike ride through South Carolina hills and a 13.1 mile run through downtown Augusta. Heather Bruno Dougherty ’87, Jodi Bruno Power ’90, and Malane Honsinger Melancon ’93 posed for a celebratory photo at the finish line.
