From the Principal
2016, the School’s 95th birthday, was a remarkable year in so many ways. It was a chance to reflect on our history and how we have grown, and of course, there was a giddy whirlwind of celebrations, creating many special memories for us all. As I celebrated with students, parents, Old Girls and families from years gone by, here in Karrinyup, around WA and the world, it was clear that there is a strong sense of community and a deep affection for this wonderful school. It was also a significant year for us in that the Annual Giving Scholarship was awarded for the first time. This meanstested scholarship has been awarded to a delightful, talented local girl who joined us in Year 10 in February. Were it not for your gifts to the Scholarship Fund since 2014, this opportunity would not have been available to her. Thank you sincerely for your support. It was with great excitement that we approached, and surpassed, our
95th Birthday Annual Giving goal of $95,000. Thank you for your support. This was our third annual appeal and we not only welcomed many new supporters to our family of donors, but also received gifts from a large number of families for the third year running. These dedicated supporters are specially acknowledged in this year’s Donor Honour Roll. St Mary’s is stronger because of the commitment and support you bring to the life of our school. Music Time on The Polson Room Piano Thanks to a gift from the Old Girls’ Association to mark the School's birthday and 95th Birthday Annual Giving donors, St Mary's has purchased a beautiful Ritmuller baby grand piano for The Polson Room. The piano will be used by students for musical concerts and entertaining guests at school events. Guests at this year's Old Girls' Day in March were treated to a special performance, by senior musicians, of hits from the reunion anniversary years 1957, '67, '77, '87 and '97! Thank you for your support of our musicians and helping us to share the joy of their music.

Designing and creating in Library Makerspaces Lily Pike, Year 11 and member of the Library Committee printing designs onto mugs.
Students are bringing their designs to life on the new sublimation printer, thanks to donors to the Library Fund. The printer is one of the items purchased with gifts to the 2016 Library Fund. Girls across all the year groups can now research and develop a design using library resources and then print it onto a variety of materials, including fabric, ceramics, plastic and metal, on the sublimation printer. “The girls will use their design skills to create an image and manipulate that image on a computer to produce something as individual as they are,” explains Ann Marshall, Senior School Library Technician. “This addition to our services in the library means we can integrate and encourage the girls’ creative design skills across all curriculum areas. We know this new piece of equipment will get a lot of use across the School.” Thank you.
Higher Aspirations Eliza Stribling ('12) was one of the recipients of the 2016 Helen Judge Fine Art Award. The award was established by Helen Hyslop (Judge ’50, Head Girl) in 2009 to support Old Girls pursuing a Fine Arts degree at university. Sadly, Helen passed away in September 2016. "The final project of my Communication Design degree was helped greatly by the Award. I was able to create something with more freedom and higher aspirations than I would have otherwise. My project, Anon Anon, involved an exploration of memory and our methods of recording it. I created a museum-like display of anonymous photography and notes that would otherwise have faded out of collective memory. It was a great culmination to my degree and a project I can see myself continuing to work on in the future. I am really interested in design that can better people’s lives and I am now working in User Experience (UX) which involves researching what users want and need, and then designing products to make the tasks they have to do to achieve this as easy as possible. I have learnt a lot
and already I've helped design a system that is being pushed into production. Five years ago, when I was in Year 12, I never would have imagined that this is where I would be now. I didn’t study art or IT, but I still managed to get here by figuring out what I enjoyed and following that path as best I could. I think it is important for all girls to continue to follow their passions and be determined in achieving their goals. There are very viable careers in the arts, and there are career options beyond what you may think of today. I am so grateful to Mrs Hyslop for her generosity to St Mary’s, and the arts in particular, during her lifetime, and to her husband, for continuing to support this award for other students."

Foundation’s 30th Anniversary This year, the St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School Foundation celebrates its 30th Anniversary and, to mark this special occasion, the Board of Management of the Foundation is delighted to announce funding for several projects which will benefit girls throughout the School. The Foundation has funded the recent renovations of the Senior and Junior School canteens, with a contribution of $400,000. These hubs of school life are now vibrant, welcoming spaces, offering a delicious and nutritious menu for the girls. In addition, the Foundation will be supplementing the funds raised at the 95th Birthday Fair, 95th Birthday Dinner Dance and through 2016 Annual Giving, for the Junior School nature-based play area and the Senior School outdoor exercise park. These are significant developments in terms of their scope, cost and presence in our school grounds and we are pleased to support these two projects which will provide new opportunities for the girls to keep physically active through play and exercise.

Plans are already well underway, with the exercise park expected to be installed in Term 2 and the nature-based play area completed before the end of the year. Bequest Society News Members of the Bishop Riley Society were welcomed back to St Mary's by Principal, Mrs Thomson, and Chairman of the Board of Governors, Ian Curlewis, for lunch in The Polson Room on 28 August 2016. A very special guest at this occasion was Mrs Molly Walters (Riley ’37), daughter of Bishop Riley. Guests were entertained by the Year 8 Piano Trio and heard from Danika Buurman (’07), recipient of the Esmee Byatt Scholarship for Medicine in 2013, about the opportunities she was able to grasp with funding from the scholarship. We have recently welcomed three new members to the Society – Linzey Allinson, Adrian Beck and Diana King (’63 Head Girl).
