INSTALLATION

GUIDE - PORCELAIN TILE

INTRODUCTION

The manufacturer has crafted a series of recommendations for the correct installation of porcelain tile. In the same way that it is necessary for tile to have processional features it is common sense that these requirements should be applicable to construction and installation professionals.

BONDING MATERIALS

In addition to proper installation methods the use of suitable materials such as; thin sets, adhesives, grout, waterproofing and anti-fracture membranes should be installed according to the manufacturers recommendations for installations to assure the life and performance of the tile.

IMPORTANT RULE

When installing porcelain with a shade variance it is necessary to mix pieces from different boxes (with matching dye-lots) This step is essential not only for high shade variance, but for all tiles.

WALL TILES

Tiles in a medium to large format should be applied on a thin layer (Thin set) with polymer additives. Smaller formats should be applied on a thicker (mortar) bed using a traditional adhesive.

FLOOR TILES

The installation of floor tiles requires the proper use of building materials as recommended by the manufacturer to assure proper tile performance. Substrates should be well proportioned and cured. You must respect drying and cure times of the substrate. A damp surface is unstable and can cause bonding problems that can result in rupture or lifting of tiles over time. To ensure proper bonding a through cleaning may be required. Existence of powdered residues, greases, paints, effloresce, slurries, ETC. will weaken the bond.

TO ENSURE A PROPER BOND AND LONG LIFE OF THE INSTALLATION THE FOLLOWING FACTORS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED:

• Carefully follow the manufacturers recommendations of the proper adhesives.

• Prepare setting materials using the proper mixture to achieve a smooth product.

• Back-buttering the tile as well as the proper mortar bed level assures maximum contact between tile and substrate.

• All joints should be cleaned of any traces of adhesives to allow for proper level of grout to be filled later.

LEVELING CLIPS

Following the latest trends in flooring the tiles sizes are getting larger and larger. A big or large tile is referred to as a “LFT” (Large Format Tile). The advantage of these materials is that they have a greater flexibility while maintaining the values for hardness and breaking strength. A large format tile greater than 15 inches in length always requires a “LFT” thin set / mortar as recommended by the manufacturer.

In the market there are specific fitting/leveling installation systems for this type of product. With these systems we are able to overcome the unevenness of the floor and accommodate the curvature of the pieces getting a much flatter surface. We recommend the use of a leveling clip system to optimize installation time, avoid irregularities in the floor, and get a perfect finish. The minimum grout joint recommendation is 5MM or 13”/64”.

Mandatory use of a leveling system is required for the installation of “LFT” tiles greater than 15” in length. The manufacturer will not accept any claims if the material is installed without a leveling system.

GROUT JOINTS

Grout joints play an important aesthetic function, they enhance the inherent beauty of the finished product. Grout joints help absorb the stress and support to a load. If the pieces are placed too close and there is not allotment for movement then the accumulating pressure can produce tile lifting.

Keep in mind that the base support is usually subjective to continuous surface expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes, structural movements, the effect of water/moisture, chemical reactions, or shrinkage of the cement/grout itself has an impact on installation.

WARNING: Laying tiles without grout joints is inadvisable and can result in installation complications. The manufacturer does not recommend the installation of tiles without grout joints. For commercial specified projects the size of the grout joints must be detailed fully in the building project and must be set by the architect or engineer. They are places in relation to structural joints which are needed in the construction process.

The grout joint is the space left between all adjacent tiles for functional or aesthetic reasons. In order to compensate for any small dimensional deviations, we recommend the use of spacers/wedges to ensure the consistent thickness of the grout joint. Grout joints help to absorb any deformations as a result of stress when subjected to a load. If tiles are installed/butted right against each other and there is no movement in the joints the accumulated tension can result in tile lift off, swelling, and spalling. Therefore, we recommend a 5MM grout joint.

RECTANGULAR ''PLANK'' LAYOUT

Rectangular sized tiles should be installed as per the tile installation instructions stated on each box. When installing a staggered brick joint pattern, the overlap should not exceed 33% repeat.
