If

there is one thing I continue to be struck by in this community, it is the generosity with which people give themselves to community life. The Celebration of New Ministry last month was a wonderful reminder that we have entered into a new season here at St. Mark’s. It was a way for us formally to say yes to this community and one another.

But it is not just a commitment to a new rector, or St. Mark’s Church. It is a reaffirmation of The Rev. Beth Knowlton kneels as Bishop Gary Lillibridge along with the community pray. our baptismal covenant. It is a the Bread of Life and the Lord’s Table each week, we then reminder that our calling as Christians is always carried answer the calling to share that same bread with San out in a specific time and place.

St. Paul gives us many wonderful images in his letters of how we come together to serve Jesus Christ. One of the most powerful is the image of the Body of Christ. In the letter to the Romans he says, “For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another.” Romans 12:5-6. It is my hope that this can be an important gathering theme for us in my first year as your rector.

our parish meeting. We will reflect on the past year and elect new leaders to the vestry. These leaders will be vital as we discern our priorities for the coming year.

I am grateful to each one who has offered themselves for this service.

In addition, we will have leaders identified who will host smaller gatherings so we can reflect with one another what it means to be one body with many members. It will give us a chance to know one another better and gather energy for the coming year. We will have ministry minutes in worship, when people share their own story of how God has worked in their lives and moved them towards a theology of abundance amidst a culture of scarcity. On November 16th, The Rt. Reverend James Folts will preach at all services that morning and we will gather our pledge cards in a spirit of worship and gratitude.

Special Council for the Election of a Bishop Coadjutor A Special Council of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas will be held on Saturday, October 25, at TMI The Episcopal School of Texas beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Mission Room at the Bishop Jones Center Following the Eucharist, there is a Bible study which is also open to all members of the Diocese. This study is coordinated by Julie Mock, a member of St. Mark’s and began as a St. Mark’s study. The group will study the Letters to Timothy, Titus, and Philemon, using William Barclay’s Study Bible as a guide. A portion is read each week before the class and then discussed as the group discerns how the readings apply to life today. Ends at noon.

Threads of Blessing Wednesdays, 10:00 a.m.

This sewing group is open to all and meets weekly at the Bishop Jones Center on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m.

Arglye Amberson and Jay Roberts: Jay and Argyle are both students at the San Antonio Academy and they are working together to raise money for the San Antonio Food Bank. They believe their project will greatly benefit the San Antonio community by giving those less fortunate than them nourishing food.

Patrick Bowen: Patrick is in the 8th grade and he enjoys playing tennis. Patrick is raising money for AriseAfrica.org, a Christian-based orphanage in Zambia. Arise Africa is an organization that helps house and school orphans and at risk children, along with supporting existing community schools and building new ones. The money Patrick raises will be used for school supplies and uniforms.

Jonathan Cotton: Jonathan is in the 8th grade at Alamo Heights Middle School. Jonathan raised money to buy box fans for needy seniors to stay cool during the summer months (“Project Cool!”). He raised enough money to buy 25 fans that were donated to the San Antonio Fire Department for distribution.

Lucie Englehardt: Lucie is in the 8th grade at St. Mary’s Hall and her favorite pastime is playing soccer. She chose to support the San Antonio Food Bank for her confirmation project because she is aware that over 1 million people are food insecure just in Texas, and she wanted to help fight hunger the best she could on a very local basis. She will be collecting food and volunteering at the food bank to organize and distribute the donations.

Jacqueline Grimes: Jacqueline’s confirmation project is about people still being able to be kind to others in different places and situations. She challenged the congregation to do one single random act of kindness towards unexpected places and people to lift up their spirits. She will be collecting everyone’s experiences through essays, pictures, or videos of these random acts of kindness.

Julia Roensch: Julia is new to St. Mark’s and we are delighted to have her in this class. She has chosen San Antonio Pets Alive! for her confirmation project because of her love of animals. The goal of San Antonio Pets Alive! is to make San Antonio a no kill city. She has visited the center and they need everything, but cat litter and bleach top the list. They can also use office supplies, towels, paper towels, trash bags, gift cards, dog and cat treats, hand sanitizer.

Sember Lucas: Sember is in the 8th grade at Alamo Heights Middle School and one of her favorite activities is horseback riding. For her confirmation project she has taken her interest in horseback riding to volunteer and raise money for the Cyndi Taylor Krier Juvenile Correctional Treatment Center and their equine therapy activity program (CHAPS). The CHAPS program has a barn and riding ring, but is in need of a functioning bathroom. The money Sember raises will be used to help build the bathroom which will allow the kids to ride longer.

Emily Noble: Emily is an 8th grader at St. Luke’s Episcopal School and she has long enjoyed helping out at the San Antonio Humane Society. For her confirmation project, she will be collecting in-kind donations of rubbing alcohol because it is in constant demand for the cleaning of wounds and medical procedures. She will also accept cash donations which will be used for the purchase of alcohol.

Elena Ribble: Elena is in the 8th grade at St. Luke’s Episcopal School and one of her favorite activities is playing softball. For her confirmation project, she will be helping to build a new raised bed for their community youth garden of the Ella Austin Community Center on the East side of San Antonio. Ella Austin’s mission is to help individuals and families improve their quality of life and self-sufficiency. With help from the church, she has raised money to purchase the supplies needed.

Seth Tracy: Seth is in the 8th grade at Hector Garcia Middle School and he loves everything about football. Seth wants to help families in third world countries for his confirmation project by buying farm animals through Childfund International and purchasing treated mosquito nets to help prevent malaria. Seth is aware what a good life he has, and he likes the idea of helping people through animals. Any and all monetary donations are welcomed. To date Seth has raised enough money to buy 6 dairy goats, 10 chickens, 30 mosquito nets, and 4 shares of a dairy cow.

Caroline Vassar: Caroline is in the 8th grade at St. Luke’s Episcopal School and her favorite pastime is reading. For her confirmation project, she conducted a school supply drive to provide needed supplies for kids at the Good Samaritan Community Services.

Happenings are spiritual renewal weekends for high school students in grades 10 through 12. The diocese sponsors three weekends each year in various loca ons. 2015 Baptism at St. Mark’s “Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ's Body the Church. The bond which God establishes in Baptism is indissoluble.

In 2015, several Sundays are designated for Holy Baptism (see back cover). We will also have Baptism Preparation Class for parents, godparents, and sponsors at 9:30 a.m. on the Saturday preceding each of the designated baptismal Sundays. Vestry Class of 2017 Election The Discernment Committee is pleased to announce that the parishioners on the following pages have accepted the call to ministry by allowing their names to stand for the Vestry election to be held on October 26. Elections are held in October so the new Vestry members may go through an orientation process before they take office in February 2015. They will be wearing a special name tag that identifies them as nominees for the class of 2017. Please read their biographical information, review the criteria we used, and make an effort to meet them before the election. Only ballots that have voted for five nominees will be counted.

Qualifications and Characteristics of a Vestry Nominee to Consider The criteria for candidates for the Vestry are as follows: Canonical Law:  At least 18 years old  A communicant in good standing (baptized, confirmed, received) in the Episcopal Church  Not previously served a full term on the Vestry within the past 12 months

Characteristics of a St. Mark’s Vestry Person: In addition to those requirements specifically set forth in the Canons and by the Parish, the Discernment Committee and the Vestry of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church have identified particular personal characteristics, experiences and values that we believe will complement the gifts of those Vestry members whose terms continue.

Parish Qualifications:  Have regularly attended worship services of choice at St. Mark's and have supported parish wide functions for at least 12 months  Agree with the parish mission and vision statements and the vestry stewardship statement  Be a pledging member working towards tithing  Attend all Vestry meetings (5:30pm on the third Tuesday of each month) and special Vestry Meetings and willing to serve on a working Vestry subcommittee  Attend new Vestry orientation and all Vestry retreat(s)

Jan Briley has been a member of St. Mark’s since she was a child and is a life-long Episcopalian. Jan has been an active leader at St. Mark’s by serving on the vestry, co-chairing the construction committee overseeing the parish house renovation in 2006, serving on the Lenten Luncheons team, and participating in Time Out Bible Study. If elected to serve on the vestry again, she hopes to advance St. Mark’s role as a resource for the city and the broader church. An architect by trade (retired), she feels that she could provide some continuity from the process of the design of our facility to the use and stewardship of it in the future. Jan is married to Len Briley; they have two daughters, Laura and Olivia.

Lynn Laurence is a San Antonio native and has been a member of St. Mark’s since 1965. If you attend the 7:45am worship service, you have no doubt encountered Lynn’s smiling face as he serves as an usher.

Lynn counts the “folks” and the sheer beauty of the church as reasons for his long-term commitment to St. Mark’s. As a vestry representative, he would like to advance the vision of St. Mark’s as being stewards of our facilities as an instrument of the ministry of Christ. He would like to explore the possibilities to invite and welcome partnerships for use of our facilities that further our vision. Lynn is married to Caroline Laurence.

John McClung joined St. Mark’s in 2001 and quickly became involved. John has served on the vestry and was a Sr. Warden, chaired the annual stewardship campaign, and participated in the “re-start” and “re-invention” of our kitchen ministries following the parish hall renovations. John states that the love for so many people who he has come to know since becoming a part of the St. Mark’s community and the earnestness with which we, as a community of faith, try to teach and live the example of Christ keeps him here and active. As a vestry member, his personal priority would be to do and be those things that bring all people to a transformative relationship with Christ. John is married to Mary Honea McClung, and they have three adult children, Andrew, Willis, and Margaret.

Robert Pollom has been a member of St. Mark’s for 13 years. A life-long Episcopalian, he was raised in south Texas where he was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in McAllen. Since joining St. Mark’s in 2001, he has served as an usher and participates in the annual Christmas to the Street as part of the men’s overnight grilling team. Robert has served as both a delegate and an alternate for St. Mark’s at our Diocesan Council. He also served on the leadership team for alternative worship, as well as the Young Adults Planning Committee. Robert is a partner with the law firm Ketterman, Rowland and Westlund. He and his wife, Shea, were married at St. Mark’s in June of 2002. They have three children, Ethan, Kate, and Caroline.

Elizabeth Raney has been an Episcopalian since 2007 and was drawn to St. Mark’s that same year through her participation in the various bible study groups hosted by The St. Benedict’s Workshop. She has served as a Sunday greeter and a volunteer with the Christmas Pageant, and is currently serving on the 2014 Christmas Pageant Planning Committee. Elizabeth served on the Rector Search Committee in 2013. As a result of her time on the Search Committee, she has an even deeper love, appreciation, and passion for our church. As a vestry member, Elizabeth feels it is imperative to have a variety of attractive education and ministry offerings that appeal to people at all ages and stages of life. Elizabeth and her husband Brandon have two children, Margaret and Miller.

Anne Rochelle is a life-long member of St. Mark’s. She has served as a member of the children’s choir, acolyte, Sunday School teacher, Lenten Luncheons volunteer, adult dinner groups, many bible studies, and Christmas pageants. When asked what keeps her at St. Mark’s, Anne responded that the people, outreach to downtown and the greater community, the music, and the Christian education all play a part.

As a vestry member, she is eager to serve the church and assist in expanding outreach efforts and to work with the children and youth program. Anne is married to Jeff Rochelle, an attorney, and they have five children: David, Thomas, Mollie, Lindsey, and Sallie. She is a third-generation member of the parish.

Angela Torres-Lopez often describes herself as a ‘church nerd’. A member of St. Mark’s since 2011, she quickly became involved in many areas of the life of the parish: Time Out Bible Study, The WorkShop; 20s-30s-40s Connections; Assisting Cherub Choir; Lenten Luncheons volunteer; Haven for Hope Ministry, and lector. She is currently the St. Mark's Bookstore bookkeeper. Angela served as an alternate at Diocesan Council and is a delegate for the Special Council to elect the Bishop Co-Adjutor. She serves as a Sunday greeter and is a part of the Hospitality Ministry. Angela has also been involved in planning the alternative worship services and served on the Generosity/We Give! Committee in 2011, which included offering a sermon at the 9AM, 11:15 AM and the CAYA services. As a vestry member, Angela is passionate about building and strengthening authentic relationships that empower us to love Christ more fully and make Christ known as we set out to do the work he has given us to do. Angela and her partner Fran have two sons, Elijah and Nathanael.

Agatha Wade was born in San Antonio and grew up here and in Corpus Christi. She joined St. Mark’s in 7th grade and has been Episcopalian since birth. Agatha serves on the Altar Guild, is a lay reader, and is a part of the 2nd Sunday supper team at Haven for Hope. Good theology and a supportive church family keeps her at St. Mark’s. She believes that with a beautiful and historic church and a wonderfully restored parish house, our facilities are a means of expanding St. Mark’s ministries and connection into the community. She is interested in continuing the strong Christian formation. As a vestry member, she work to continue a high degree of accountability between one another (what makes a church community happen) and the effectiveness of our outreach and would bring her experience to help this continue.

Agatha is married to Charles Wade. They have three daughters, Peaches, Ellen, and Elizabeth.

The Peaceable Kingdom

By Brenda Kingery women in 7 dioceses in the Province of Uganda to attend a workshop to learn embroidery and design, study scripture and learn needed skills in business management and marketing. The women are encouraged to gather as a community that helps to develop their personal selfesteem.

Barbara Ringen’s embroidered tapestries were at first just a vision.

She wanted to honor her late husband, Spike Ringen, who was a retired Army Colonel.

Barbara, a Master Embroiderer, has spent a lifetime at needlepoint and embroidery, while otherwise volunteering at Methodist Hospital.

Meet our Staff Singers MICHAEL ZUNIGA, baritone Michael originates from San Antonio, TX. After receiving his education from both Texas Tech University and the University of Texas at San Antonio, he began teaching in the classroom; working with public schools, private schools, and non-profit organizations. Having worked with the SA Youth Centers from 2001-2003, he was instrumental in the organization receiving grants supporting the Arts, and worked alongside the VH1 Save the Music Foundation and many local music schools to enhance music education for at-risk and underprivileged youth. From 2003-2006, Michael served as a clinician for the Northeast Independent School District (San Antonio) and taught in many of their adult education and continued education classes. Continuing music education in the classroom, Michael taught at TMI: The Episcopal School of Texas as the assistant choir director from 2006-2009.

KEITH MASTERSON, tenor A native of San Antonio Texas, Keith graduated with his Masters of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Miami, and his Undergraduate in Vocal Performance from Louisiana State University. While studying in Miami with baritone Dean Southern, and coach Elaine Rinaldi, he appeared as Albert in Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring, Joe in Richard Wargo’s Ballymore Part I: Winners, and the Fox in Peter Winkler’s The Fox and Hen, A Fable. His other recent roles include Beppe in Rita, Hermosa in l’ile de Tulipitan, Giuseppe in La Traviata, Pedrito in Monkey See Monkey Do, Paul in Toy Shop, and Frederic in The Pirates of Penzance. In addition, he has appeared in concert with the AIMS Festival Orchestra in Graz Austria under the baton of famed maestro Edoardo Müller. Keith has been a member of the San Antonio Chamber Choir since 2012, and is also a member of IlluMen, a professional mens choir. Currently, Keith teaches private voice lessons at Reagan High School and is also in his second year as a tenor section leader at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in San Antonio.

As a performer, Michael has sung with the San Antonio Opera and has been a featured soloist for the San Antonio Symphony Mastersingers, the San Antonio Chamber Choir, the Texas Bach Choir, the Texas Mid-Symphony Orchestra, and IlluMen.

Presently, Michael serves as the Office Manager of a real estate firm in San Antonio. Since 2007, he has served as the section leader at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in San Antonio, TX. Halloween Party We’ll have a Halloween party for children grades 6 and younger on Wednesday, October 29 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Gosnell Hall. Wear a costume if you’d like! If you’re in choir, the costume needs to be appropriate for choir rehearsal from 5:00 to 5:30 (or put it on after choir practice). Café Kairos will have a spooky dinner that evening for the regular fee. We’ll have a balloon artist, games, and family fun!

We are back to our fantastic schedule of choirs, youth groups, classes, and activities, for YOU on Wednesdays.

From 6:00 to 6:45 there will be Family Programming in Gosnell Hall while families are at their tables. In October, the Family Programming will involve St Francis, St Luke, outreach, Halloween . . . come and find out more!
