t is hard to believe that it is almost midsummer and that our renovation project is also approaching the halfway point. The overall scope of the project is beginning to move from that of demolition to reconstruction. Final contracts are being reviewed and nearing approval for the audio/visual and lighting work. The waterproofing of the foundation is nearly completed and the soil is currently being replaced along the exterior of the east side of the sanctuary. Work is also proceeding on a new irrigation system as well as improved drainage. Other interior ongoing interior works include the installation on new conduit for electrical wiring. Ongoing work being done offsite includes the repair and refinishing of the pews and the repair of the stained glass windows. The stained glass windows will be protected by acrylic panels. There was a hope that much of the interior plaster ceilings could be refinished with a new, thin “skim” coat of plaster. Although most of the plaster is in good condition, the underlying and supporting metal mesh or lathe has deteriorated to the point that it is in need of replacing. This will result in an all new ceiling for most all of the sanctuary. The Chancel or the eastern most part of the sanctuary will retain the original ceiling. The installation of the new ceiling will entail new wood supports as well as lathe and plaster. A further benefit of this work will be that insulation, which we do not have, will be installed in the ceiling. All of this ceiling work had been anticipated and was budgeted. This work will not affect the timetable for completion of the restoration. The unanticipated construction problem has been the condition of the existing roof. It has
been found that the entire sanctuary roof is in need of replacement. This has been confirmed by two independent roofing inspections. Repairs to the existing roof are not considered feasible or prudent. We are currently in the process of getting several bids for this reroofing. This is an unanticipated expense and is not in the construction budget. Again, this should not impact the overall timetable for the completion of the restoration. Overall the renovation work is proceeding on schedule and without any major surprises other than the roof. We hope to be able to have a Sunday morning tour of the ongoing work later this summer.
