From the Rector Adult Parish Retreat Mustang Island – January 13‐15, 2012

I

am delighted to announce that St. Mark’s is planning an adult retreat at the Mustang Island Conference Center to begin the New Year. It has been my experience that retreats are a primary way in which we can grow in our faith and build our Rev. Mike Chalk community of faith. For instance, our Family Retreats at Mustang Island have proved to be very beneficial to those who attend.

Joining me for this retreat is The Rev. Mary C. Earle, author of numerous books on Christian Spirituality and leader of many retreats throughout the country. Also joining our retreat staff is The Rev. Matt Wise, Associate Rector of Church of Reconciliation, San Antonio. Rev. Wise is an excellent musician and teacher who will add a great deal to our weekend retreat. Our

design for the weekend is to follow presentations with small group discussion. We also expect to follow a leisurely pace and allow plenty of time for reflection.

My purpose for making this early announcement is to get this date on your calendar. Please go to our website to register for the retreat. Registration will be limited to members of St. Mark’s but on November 1 the retreat will be opened to the diocese.

My hope is that an adult retreat will become a part of the life of this parish much like our family retreats. Please give this retreat prayerful consideration.

s God calling you to a life of prayer and service? Empowered by the Holy Spirit, our vision as Daughters of the King is to know Jesus Christ, to make Him known to others, and to become reflections of God’s love throughout the world.

The Daughters of the King is a lay Order for women who are communicants of the Episcopal Church, or churches in communion with it, or churches who are in the Historic Episcopate. Members undertake a Rule of Life, incorporating the Rule of Prayer and the Rule of Service. By reaffirmation of the promises made at confirmation, a Daughter pledges herself to a life-long program of prayer, service, and evangelism, dedicated to

the spread of Christ’s Kingdom and the strengthening of the spiritual life of her parish.

MISSION OF THE ORDER: The object of this order shall be the extension of Christ’s Kingdom through prayer, service, and evangelism.

IRA Rollover to a Charity: What You Need to Know Ar cle Submi ed By Carolyn Lowery, Chair of the Pledge Drive & Every Member Canvass Commi ee

Basic Requirements: Who Can Do This?

The individual must be at least 70½ years of age. This should not be confused with the IRA distribution requirements that start in the year following the year in which an individual turns 70½. They must be 70½ now. So, if today is December 16, 2010 – the individual should have been born on or before June 18, 1940, in order to do this.

What Kinds Of Retirement Plans Are Included?

The rollover must be from an IRA or a Roth IRA. It cannot be done from a 401(k), 403(b), Keogh, or other qualified plan. Typically, an individual can roll over amounts from these plans to an IRA, and that step will be necessary if they wish to do this.

What Is The Maximum Amount?

The amount cannot exceed $100,000.

What About The Minimum Required Distributions?

A Qualified Charitable Distribution can include the Minimum Required Distribution (MRD). So, for example, if Joe has to take a MRD of $20,000 and instead makes a Qualified Charitable Distribution of $20,000 to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church – he has fulfilled the MRD requirement and does not need to take that distribution as well.

How Should These Gifts Be Made?

The administrator or custodian of the IRA should make the check payable to the charity and deliver the check directly to the charity.

They should not make the distribution to the IRA holder and nor let the holder deliver the funds to the charity. If they do, this cannot be treated as a Qualified Charitable Distribution.

Restrictions: What Kind Of Organization Can Receive This Rollover And What Kind Of Restrictions Are Involved?

It must be an outright gift – it cannot be to a charitable remainder trust, gift annuity, pooled income fund, donor advised fund, or supporting organization. There can also be NO quid pro quo involved (so it cannot be used for preferential athletic seating contributions, golf outings, events, raffles, or anything else that would give a benefit back to the donor).

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church is a publicly supported charitable organization and can, of course, receive IRA rollover distributions.

Time Limit The distribution must be made this year.

Timing Of Payment The IRS has never clarified this, so it is best to make sure that the charity actually receives the payment by the deadline (not just have the check in the mail by that date).

Charitable Deduction There is NO charitable deduction available for this type of gift.

If You Have Already Taken Your Minimum Distribution …

If you have already taken your minimum distribution for 2010, you need to know the following: On 1.10.11, the IRS issued a statement saying that the retroactively extended IRA Charitable Rollover provision does not allow taxpayers to return required minimum distributions that have already been taken for the year 2010. Thus, a charitable rollover may substitute for your minimum distribution ONLY if you have not yet taken that distribution.

State Tax Considerations You should check to see how your state of residence is treating these gifts. It is possible that some states will not follow the standard procedure of simply excluding the distribution from gross income.

This may be an important consideration since some states do not have charitable contributions as part of their state tax law. Texas has no individual state income tax.

In what situations might this be advantageous to a donor?

The Donor Must Take Mandatory Distributions But Does Not Need Them.

Since these gifts can be used to offset the mandatory distribution amount, those who don’t want to (Continued on page 5)

take the income can simply send it over to a qualified charity and avoid receiving the income and paying the tax. This is actually an ideal situation since if they don’t do this, they will incur the income because of the distribution. By making this special gift, they avoid ever claiming the income (and thus avoid paying the tax on the distribution).

Individuals who do not itemize.

You must itemize to get a charitable deduction, but if you are taking the standard deduction and not itemizing – you might consider this as a way of making your gift. It will once again, as above, reduce the amount of your mandatory distribution and avoid the tax on that although, as noted under Charitable Deduction, above, there is no charitable deduction on this type of gift.

Individuals who consistently max out their charitable gifts.

Some individuals always give 50% of their adjusted gross income (AGI) which is the maximum you can deduct in any one year.

While carryover is available, if the donor continues to give at this level, they can never use the carryover and it ultimately expires and cannot be used. If they want to give above that 50% AGI limit, this is one way to do it and get the benefit of having that amount distributed tax free from the IRA. Here Comes Some Math …

Some IRAs and Roth IRAs contain both deductible and non-deductible contributions, so that if the individual were to make a withdrawal, part would be taxable and part would be considered “return of principal” and thus be non-taxable. An example is probably the best way to look at this.

Example: Mrs. X has an IRA with exactly $100,000 in it and of that amount $80,000 is considered “qualified” contributions to an IRA and the other $20,000 were “non-qualified” contributions to the IRA. This basically means that the $80,000 is related to contributions that were made before income tax (pretax) and the $20,000 is related to contributions made after tax. The way this is normally treated for withdrawal purposes is by proration. So if Mrs. X took an $80,000 distribution from the IRA, part would be taxable (because it is related to pretax “qualified” contributions that she made to the IRA) and part would be non-taxable (because it is related to after tax “non-qualified” contributions that she made to the IRA). The formula would be ($80,000 ÷ $100,000 x $20,000) = $16,000 non-taxable as return of principal and the balance ($80,000 – $16,000) = $64,000 would be a taxable distribution.

If, however, Mrs. X rolls over $80,000 to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church the entire amount will be considered a gift of the deductible portion, leaving all of the $20,000 in the IRA as non-qualified contributions and therefore not taxable if she withdraws it from the IRA. Note: If You Elect to do a Qualified Charitable Distribution: Please notify St. Mark’s Episcopal Church of your intention to do this and let us know the identity of your IRA custodian and the amount that you will be having them transfer to us. We get a surprising number of checks from IRA custodians that have no identification of the underlying donor. In some cases, the custodian has refused to give us that information and so we have been unable to receipt the individual for their gift until they have identified themselves to us.

It is my inten on to make a Qualified Charitable Distribu on (QCD) to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church from my IRA, which may fulfill part or all of my IRA required minimum distribu on for this year.

Great Things Happen When We Come Together

G

reat things happened on June 20-24 at VBS, Hometown Nazareth, where Jesus was a kid. Over 200 children, youth and adult volunteers from St. Mark’s and Christ Church came together for a week we will not forget. Kids met in tribes named after the 12 tribes of Israel.

After a celebration and a hometown huddle with their tribes, they moved together through many exciting areas. One stop was Mary’s house. In that drama, tribes met Mary and heard about her perspective on Jesus as a baby, little boy and teenager. Mary was visited by her pesky neighbor Eunice who didn’t believe that Jesus was really the son of God. Kids helped Mary explain what they knew to be the truth. Another favorite stop in the day was fun and games. Here kids did just that, had fun and played Bible games. Once again, this years VBS had an authentic Bible times market place complete with a carpentry shop, a bead bazaar, olive oil shop, barn yard, rocky quarry, food market and many more. The kids spent their Nazareth tokens to participate in the market place. They enjoyed visiting with the shopkeepers and telling them all about Jesus.

Anna’s house was a hit with the kids. They cooled off and did crafts with Jesus’ grandmother Anna. The tribes met again in huddles and completed the day with an awesome celebration.

Many thanks to all of our volunteers who gave of their time and love to our precious children. The hugs, songs and smiles said it all. Together we learned that nothing is impossible with God and that God loves us enough to send us his Son as a little child. Great things did happen and we thank you all for being a part of it.

Where Have You Been All Summer?

Have you traveled the world? Did you set out to see America the beautiful? Maybe your family has seen something new or visited a favorite sightseeing spot a little closer to home. Whether you crossed many miles or went right around the corner, I believe that a special kind of Christian Formation happens on vacation. In fact, two of my most memorable and transcendent moments have happened during vacations on the slopes or in the sand.

You will find an interactive bulletin board on the second floor for the St. Mark’s family. As you return home from your vacationslarge or small- come by and show us where you’ve been. We will have maps posted and thumbtacks available for you to mark your destinations. Bring us a picture and we’ll post that too. Better yet write a paragraph about your travels and what they may have taught you about God, yourself, your family, your community, or the world. Show and tell us as much or as little as you would like, but do come and share your summer adventures!

Director of Youth Ministries In May St. Mark’s took a moment to recognize our graduating seniors and present them each with a gift before they move on to the next chapter in their lives. This is a tremendously accomplished senior class and we want to recognize their accomplishments.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Madeleine Bousquet Madeleine has served as an acolyte for six years while also participating in the Red Cross Club, National Junior Classical League and Interact at St. Mary’s Hall. A member of the Cum Laude Society, Madeleine will be attending Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

Kyle Briggs – Sorry, information not available at time of print Peter De Luna– Sorry, information not available at time of print Sarah Ellen Payer– Sorry, information not available at time of print John Reesman John has participated in St. Mark’s activities including Children’s Choir, Youth mission trips and fundraisers, and volunteering at the Good Samaritan Center to read to young children. His last year he served as an acolyte captain, capping six years of dedicated acolyte service. He has also been a volunteer with the USAA Volunteer Corps and the San Antonio Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

John graduated from Alamo Heights High School, where he spent his senior year as editor of the school newspaper, The Hoof Print, for which he won a UIL award two years running. He was an AP Scholar with Distinction, listed on the Honor Roll, and a member of the Sociedad Honoria Hispánic, Los Amigos Spanish Club, and the French Club. John was a member of the city’s swim team San Antonio Wave. He has been awarded a Dean’s Scholarship to Trinity University, where he will enroll in the fall. He plans to study law. He is also an avid traveler and has visited 18 countries.

David Rochelle David is a recipient of the Vanderbilt University Chancellor’s Scholarship, where he will receive full-tuition scholarship beginning in the fall. A dedicated acolyte for St. Mark’s while also

participating in Christmas to the Street, mission trips and volunteered at Good Sam basketball camps. David was a National Merit Semifinalist, AP scholar with Honors, Eagle Scout, varsity basketball captain and Saint Mary’s Hall Mascot Committee. He was also a member of the Invisible Children Club, Spanish Club, Student Shadow and Shield Society. Also well-traveled, David has visited over 10 countries and numerous areas of the United States and Canada.

Aaron Sherman Aaron has been an acolyte for the last four years and was a member of the National Honor’s Society, editor of the TMI student newspaper, on the varsity lacrosse, cross country and soccer teams for the Panthers. Aaron has received the Alcala Scholarship from the University of San Diego and will study economics this fall.

Noah Stanton Noah was part of the children’s choir at St. Mark’s for four years before spending the last six serving as an extremely dedicated acolyte. A graduate of Alamo Heights High School Noah was on the academic decathlon team, model United Nations, UIL, and theatre.

He is a recipient of the National Merit Scholarship and AP Distinguished Scholar. Noah plans on attending Pomona College in Claremont, California.

Adam Thomas Adam will attend and swim at Trinity University. He was an acolyte from 6 - 12th grade, Eagle Scout and was captain for the Alamo Heights High School water polo and swimming teams.

Adam had the distinction of being an All-American & Junior National Swimmer and was a member of two state record breaking relays.

James Uhl James was awarded the All District and All State Academic in football and baseball at Alamo Heights High School. He was a member of the National Honor Society and an Eagle Scout. James was an acolyte for seven years and had the opportunity to acolyte at the National Cathedral. He will be attending the University of Texas School of Geosciences.

RALLY DAY 2011 The Commission on Ministries invites you to join us for RALLY DAY including a ministry fair in Gosnell Hall immediately following the 10:00a.m. worship service on Sunday, August 21, 2011. The event is intended to acquaint parishioners with the various ministries at St. Mark’s and provide an opportunity to learn how they may participate. The children’s (2nd floor) and youth (3rd floor) ministries will also be conducting and “open house” for parents, children and youth to learn about the upcoming events and Sunday school schedule.

Rally Day is a great opportunity to “kick off” the Fall season at St. Mark’s. Come for fellowship and refreshments!
