W

hat a great honor and delight to have Ray Suarez visit St. Mark’s! Mr. Suarez, senior correspondent for PBS NewsHour, shared his vision of how the church can serve the common good. Together with our wonderful panelists, Rick Casey, Jill Oettinger, and Nancy Reed, we clearly heard that our community needs the church to serve. The conversation provided us the opportunity to discern how we may serve the common good.

On Sunday morning, Mr. Suarez made a compelling case for the Episcopal Church and our responsibility to face some of the tough issues of our time.

He was very generous with his time, signing his books and granting many interviews before he arrived at St. Mark’s.

Mr. Suarez wrote, “You all couldn’t have been better hosts…the audiences were friendly and engaged…the weather was great. To ask for more would be greedy!”

I am grateful to the staff and many volunteers who helped to make this event a memorable one.

we want to hear from each and every member of the community of St. Mark’s. If you are interested in joining this process, please contact Elaine Enloe (eenloe@stmarks-sa.org) by April 30.

or years analysts of mainstream denominations have been reporting changes in patterns of attendance at Sunday worship and changes in patterns of pledging. We see these patterns at St. Mark’s as well.

The focus groups will provide a real opportunity for people to share their views in a safe, comfortable setting. We hope to hear your heartfelt view and insights on various topics we will ask you to talk about. Every team of two vestry members will ask the same questions of their groups, and after gathering this data, the vestry will meet to interpret it. We will not attribute the comments to any guest in the group, but we do hope to hear from them all.

With these trends in mind our clergy have led the vestry in a process called adaptive leadership. This process entails gathering information from our own community about behavioral trends, analyzing that information, and taking steps to change our own institutional behavior to adapt to the changing society.

This year, during late spring and early summer, vestry members will be convening focus groups to respond to a series of questions we have formulated concerning these changing patterns of church attendance and pledging. The focus groups will include a sampling of St. Mark’s parishioners and people who signed up at the Winter Gathering. We also welcome all who are interested in joining us, as

So these focus groups will begin our active implementation of the adaptive change process, and we look forward to the challenge.

I will keep you informed of our progress as we go along in this important work. Our gratitude goes out to all who signed up to participate.

This Holy Week

On Holy Saturday we will be drawn to the Great Vigil of Easter and to our celebrations on Easter Day. Greeting us at the vigil we will hear that “…On

nderstanding the drama contained in words and worship of Holy Week is vital to our formation as Christians. This year at St. Mark’s we will follow the Gospel of John’s telling of the story. On Palm Sunday we will follow Jesus’ journey into Jerusalem, a day filled with the joyful triumphant entry of a king bringing new hope and expectations of greatness. But the drama shifts, and we will slowly learn just what kind of king Jesus will be.

this most holy night, in which our Lord Jesus passed over from death to life, the Church invites her members, dispersed throughout the world, to gather in vigil and prayer. For this is the Passover of the Lord, in which, by hearing his Word and celebrating his Sacraments, we share in his victory over death.”

As we immerse ourselves in the events of the week we will bear witness to the criticism Jesus received from religious and civil authorities, his bread breaking and foot washing, his dispute with soldiers and accusers, and finally his trial and crucifixion as a common criminal.

Our painstaking and patient walk through Jesus’ last week deeply forms the Christian community into one of joy, hope and great promise kindled

by God’s new fire of resurrection. This is the promise of Holy Week.

Easter Egg Hunt and Picnic Lunch Saturday, April 23

By Jennifer Allison, Co-Director of Children’s Ministries Come join us for an all age family fun event in celebration of the Easter Season! There will be over 4,000 eggs to hunt, so there will be plenty for everyone.

If you are worried about a little one, have no fear, there are to be age groups with separate hiding areas.

Where?

Bishop Jones Center at 111 Torcido Road, San Antonio, 78209. It’s located in the neighborhood behind the HEB Central Market on Broadway.

Who is invited?

All of the St. Mark’s Community and their guests (Invite your friends and family!). Everyone is invited! You do not need to be accompanied by a child to come and enjoy the fun. Granny and Grandpa will enjoy face painting and having a picture made with E. Bunny.

What time is the actual Easter Egg Hunt?

At 10:45am Jonathan Wickham will tell the Resurrection Story and then the children will begin hunting the eggs! The hunting should start around 11:00am.

What do Bunnies and Eggs Have to do With Easter?

By Heather Herschell, Co-Director of Children’s Ministries Most people know that rabbits and eggs are symbols of fertility, new birth and springtime. I began an investigation hoping to find the “real” connection between egg hunts and Easter bunnies in more religious terms. Unfortunately what I found was not one clearcut connection. Instead I learned that the folkloric and legendary ties between these symbols and the celebration of the risen Christ are quite numerous. Easter symbols and celebrations are as varied as the many Christian cultures of the world.

Christian holidays often have connections to the ancient celebrations of people who converted to Christianity. Easter is no exception. In fact, the name Easter is thought by some to be derived from the Germanic lunar goddess Eoster, who was often symbolized by the hare and the egg. Thus the lunar cycle has also been historically tied to the Easter season and actually determines the date of Easter each year in accordance with guidelines determined in 325 AD by the Council of Nicea.[1] I did have some success at the public library in an effort to find a few resources for parents and children to explore together the origins of these iconic symbols of

This year we will be meeting early on Friday to have a day of fun together to celebrate the end of the school year before a full day of work at the San Antonio Food Bank. Our weekend will conclude before the 10:00a.m. worship service on Sunday morning. 2011 Youth Retreat!!! Friday, April 29 through Sunday, May 1 at Champions Retreat on Lake LBJ. Get ready for blobbing fun, gooey s’mores, and heartthumping adventures, you definitely don’t want to miss it!

The youth retreat is an opportunity for us to get away for a few days as a group and share in God’s creation in a time of reflection, discussion, team building activities, and just good ol’ fun. This year, we will focus on entering into a deeper relationship with God as a group and as individuals and what better place to bask in HIS glory right after Easter than in the wonderful Texas Hill country?

* Acolyte Training: May 22 at 10:00a.m. in Gosnell Hall. All current acolytes (minus our graduating seniors) and any current 6th graders who want to be an acolyte must attend. * Way of the Cross presented by the Youth of St. Mark’s on April 22 at 7:00p.m. at St. Mark’s.

Cost for the weekend is $75 and includes transportation, 5 meals, lodging, activities, and t-shirt.

Youth will need to bring some money for lunch on Sunday. Scholarship assistance is available.

Music from St. Mark’s Music From St. Mark's presents Happy Birthday to Franz Liszt (1811-1886)

By Kristin Roach, Interim Director of Music incorporating Biblical texts, Gregorian chant, pieces of the Catholic Mass, and ancient hymns.

This year's Fiesta Concert presents sacred works of Liszt demonstrating his love of virtuosity and personal expression. A true Renaissance man, Liszt was THE 19-century superstar, feverishly acclaimed by the public as piano virtuoso, composer, conductor, and philanthropist, yet turned later in Artwork by Tim life to the austere spirituality of Blonkvist the Franciscan monastery. The Prelude and Fugue on BACH for organ is based on the musical notes from the surname of the baroque master, J.S. Bach. Totentanz or Dance of Death is a piano concerto based on the Dies Irae (Day of Wrath) chant from the Requiem mass, and also on the medieval fresco entitled The Triumph of Death.

Outreach News The Gift of Hospitality

By Carolyn Meyer, Reception Chairman St. Mark’s has long been known as a church that embraces the gift of hospitality and compassion.

Throughout its history, members of our congregation have reached out to those in their greatest time of need…the death of a loved one. A new committee is being formed to provide a reception immediately following a funeral at St. Mark’s. For the last several years, Ann Coiner, Ann Keetch, and a few others, have been quietly serving in this capacity.

So, this is not a new ministry at our church but one that is broadening its base.

Teams of eight to ten members are being created to host these events.

As soon as the chairman is notified that a reception has been requested, a team will be called to provide the food and to host during the reception. The teams will serve on a rotating basis. In the event of a very large funeral, teams may be combined or the family may decide to have the event catered. To date,

grieving family appreciates the three teams are in place and ready to opportunity to greet and visit with work. In preparation for hosting these receptions, a beautiful new silver closet has been built to house the silver trays, flatware, bowls, and other silver pieces that have been given to the church. Parishioner Earl Fae Eldridge, a professional closet designer, has created a well organized and secure space to store these items. In addition, parishioners John Tarr and Robert Tisdal provided the Pacific Cloth to line the shelves. A huge “Thank You” to each of these donors! A linen closet is in the process of being designed where the tablecloths and table skirts can be organized, hung and ready at a moment’s notice.

Approximately 15 years ago, St. Mark’s took the unusual step of seeking to support needs outside its own bounds, especially downtown. It formed an Outreach Committee to evaluate requests and organizations, and over its life has made gifts of $1,140,000. The Messenger will run stories in successive issues about the difference St. Mark’s has made in individual lives through its members’ generosity.

How the Outreach Committee Allocates Your Money and Helps the Community

By Nancy Cook-Monroe, Committee Member Serving on the St. Mark’s Outreach Committee feels a little like how it might be to serve in Congress. But just a little. Members meet to deliberate over how to allocate money in the Outreach budget to a dozen or so organizations that serve the community and, in one case, Central America.

The organizations who applied this year are: Bexar County Detention Ministries, Christian Assistance Ministries, Communities in Schools, the Ecumenical Center for Religion and Health, I Care San Antonio (which provides eye care to the underserved), Morningside Ministries, San Antonio Christian Dental Clinic, San Antonio Food Bank (Kids Café), the Texas Water Mission (an ongoing project of the Diocese of West Texas in Honduras) and Youth Orchestras of San Antonio.

Additionally, the Outreach Committee is in its third year of a three-year pledge to San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries and the Good Samaritan Center.

The process begins with the committee chair’s sending the organizations, which typically are informally linked by having one or more St. Mark’s members serving on their boards, a request to apply. In preparation for assessing grant applications a few months later, each Outreach Committee member visits one of the organizations to learn firsthand how it operates and makes an impact. After reading all applications – each requesting a reasonable amount for a specific program -members gain insights from each other as to how well the organization meets St. Mark’s giving criteria.

These criteria are what you might expect – strength and financial soundness of the organization, and needs it fulfills (especially those not served by other groups.)

Also considered is whether it has a Christian or Episcopal affiliation and, most important, if its mission aligns with St. Mark’s vision statement.

Also, as we hope members of Congress do, we continuously remind ourselves that the money we share was given by the congregation and, while we were not elected to the committee, that we are accountable to our St. Mark’s brethren in its usage.

This year, with a budget of $90,000, pre-committed pledges totaled $59,000 to the St. Mark’s Kitchen Corps, St. Paul’s Montessori, Hawthorne Academy’s science program, and seminary donations at the rector’s discretion. This left $31,000 for the committee to disperse. Guided by the averages of committee members’ scores, site visits and lively discussion, the committee determined these gifts for 2011: I Care San Antonio – $2,500 San Antonio Christian Dental Clinic -- $5,000 Texas Water Mission -- $4,000 Youth Orchestra of San Antonio -- $4,000 Communities in Schools -- $5,000 Bexar County Detention Ministries -- $2,500 Christian Assistance Ministries -- $5,000 Ecumenical Center for Religion and Health -- $1,000 Morningside Ministries -- $1,000 San Antonio Food Bank -- $1,000 While the Outreach Committee felt the allocation was fair, we regretted not being able to do more, especially considering the current State Legislature’s budget cuts to organizations that serve the underserved.

Outreach News Ministry Moments: Community of Care

he Community of Care ministry cares for the homebound and other senior (or maybe not so senior) members of the church was formed in May of 2005. Pat Hutchison Noble coordinates the Community Care at St. Mark’s. Her ministry might include assisting a member to a doctor’s appointment, the grocery store, an afternoon lunch or coffee, or perhaps just some time for a laugh or two. The main purpose is to let our parishioners know that they are loved, supported and cared for by the St. Mark’s community.
