Peters Old stones form this wall Mortared here before color TV, Kennedy’s death, both moon walks Long they slept in the earth or in the creek Before cowboys, Franciscans, Comanche Before the wild pigs, large mammals, with shells the size of Volkswagen Beetles, Before the terrible lizards, the giant ferns, the silent trilobites Each one a grave marker for untold tiny sea creatures Whose skeletons and shells formed the calcium carbonate sediment-the lime stone All creatures of the One who watched them swim and sink Rough stones form this wall Rougher than the newer stones in the newer chapel Rougher and darker than the huge bright blocks around The Domain’s fountain Rougher than the glass-like granite countertop that I simply must have With pits and scrapes and strength from an older world, no two are alike Just like the holy ones who saw each one’s shape in the rugged pile Just like the One who saw how each one fits into the hollow of the other Silent stones form this wall Silent in the presence of our conversations and updates Silent to small lies, “Loved your longer-than-usual sermon” or “Yes, I’m doing great.” Silent to tears of joy and sorrow, for changes and chances, funeral receptions Silent because the living stones, the pillars, sing their heart out Silent because the pebbles bounce their balls, shout at the top of their lungs, Alleluia! Hosanna! Joy! Even when they are not supposed to Shushhhhhh, we say, but the stones know better So they wait for their chance to shout to the One who saw them form

Vestry Highlights The St. Mark’s Vestry met in the Bennett Wing Classroom at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17. The agenda and minutes from the April meeting were approved, with minor corrections. The Senior Warden’s report included:
Plumbing repairs for the day school, which will require the water to be turned off, are scheduled for May 23. In the last week of April, an AC unit in the Day School had to be replaced, and one in the Parish Hall had to be repaired. The annual Fire Inspection is scheduled for May 23. The gutters were cleaned. The door handle and a shelf broke on the kitchen refrigerator and parts are being ordered. The new office computer is up and running and the old one was repaired and now serves as the backup. Despite all of the rain, there have been no building leaks! Lark Anthony, who volunteers in the office on Friday mornings, has let us know that May 27 will be her last Friday to volunteer. Lark has worked on Fridays for 20 years! We will recognize Lark for her office volunteer service on June 5. Karen Dulaney Smith has resigned from the Vestry. We will wait until Elizabeth+ returns from sabbatical to discuss appointing someone to complete Karen’s term. There will be a delegation from Costa Rica in Austin on June 24 – 26 and several St. Mark’s folks will be attending a luncheon at St. David’s with them. We were approached by a Boy Scout who lives in the neighborhood about the possibility of doing his Eagle Scout project at the church. Due to his timeline we are not sure if we can help him but we will follow up. The Day School had a Family Fun fest on April 29 that was well attended.

The First Annual St. Mark’s Fun Run/Walk on April 24 went well, with about 20 people walking from the church to the original location on Lamar and back. An update on the Veteran’s Fellowship Ministry. David+ will be conducting Morning Prayer at 8:30 a.m. on May 30. The Evensong service on Pentecost went very well, with attendance at 115. The choir did a fantastic job and it was a beautiful service. David+ will be graduating from Seminary of the Southwest with a Master of Arts in Religion on May 24. The ceremony will be at St. Matthew’s and Presiding Bishop Michael Curry will be receiving an honorary doctorate. The Men’s Fishing Trip is scheduled for June 19-21 and there is a good turnout so far, which has brought the cost down. There is still room for more folks though! The Scholarship Golf Tournament is scheduled for June 25.

June and July 2016 Committee Report Highlights: Finance – April pledge payments were just short of budget but pledges are over budget YTD. Expenses are within budget. There was discussion about a proposal from Austin Energy to eliminate or change discounts currently given to Houses of Worship. Clarence Bonnen attended a meeting of several area churches and John Edgerton is reviewing our energy bills for the last year to see what effect the change may have on our bills. John Cooper and Melissa Blanding offered to assist with calls to City Council members if needed once we know what the impact will be. Education – Vacation Bible School is set for June 13 – 17. Registration is looking good and we have a good group of volunteers to teach. Outreach – We will be preparing a meal for the Ronald McDonald house on June 12 and there is a signup sheet for volunteers; we have a volunteer work day at the Capitol Area Food Bank on July 16 from 9 a.m. to noon; the annual blood drive will be on August 14. Families with Young Children – has a Facebook Group and all are welcome to join. They had a good turnout for the Walk for Cystic Fibrosis on April 24. Habitat for Humanity has reached out to us to confirm that we want to be involved in a build this year. We do have it in the budget. They will be sending more information on dates in the next few weeks.
It’s Back! St. Mark’s Yard Sale will be Saturday, September 10, 2016 The St. Mark’s Yard sale is back, and will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2016. With help from the entire parish, we hope to have another very successful sale. What can you do?
Please start saving items you wish to donate. We will get a container 30 days prior to the event for collecting donations. Watch for a list of items that will be accepted and sign-up sheets to begin building our teams. Spread the word to family, friends and neighbors!
Jill Collins and Margarita Moreno will be chairing the sale. Please mark your calendars for the date. More details will be published in the bulletin soon!
June Events Graduation Sunday and Beginning of Summer Schedule: June 5 Services will be at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Sundays during the summer. Come celebrate graduates at the 10 a.m. service on June 5. We will also be celebrating Lark Anthony, who after 20+ years is retiring from her service as the Friday office volunteer.
Heifer Living Gift Market: Sunday, June 5, 11 a.m. The Heifer Living Gift Market will be held Sunday, June 5, at 11:00 a.m. Sample food, enjoy a petting zoo, and learn how Heifer helps empower families. We will also provide hotdogs and ice cream to help us celebrate the end of the academic church year and our part in Heifer’s work around the world.

June Events, concluded Men’s Fishing Trip: June 19 – 21 Become part of the fishing tradition here at St. Mark’s! This trip is a valuable time for St. Mark’s men, young and seasoned, to bond over exaggerated story-telling, cold beverages, and experiencing God’s creation. After a long day on the boats, Captain’s Quarters Inn has a pool to lounge around and relive the day. There are also plenty of restaurant choices near the motel. We will be leaving right after the 10:00 a.m. summer service on June 19, and we will carpool to the coast. We return either late Monday evening or Tuesday afternoon, depending on your schedule. Since it is a chartered trip, the more people that come, the lower the price—so the more the merrier! Both deep-sea fishing and bay fishing are available, and included in either excursion is rod, reel, and guides. For more information, contact David+: dpeters@stmarksaustin.org.

Upcoming Voice Recital at St. Mark’s. Christa Tumlinson, Soprano and member of the St. Mark's choir, will present a solo vocal recital in the Chapel on July 10th at 4 p.m., joined by Maureen Broy Papovich, Soprano, and accompanied by Nikki Birdsong, piano. They will sing a family friendly program of contemporary vocal music centered around themes of childhood and animals. The recital will benefit the Autism Society of Central Texas, the organization through which the singers met and a cause they are both passionate about. Be sure to come for an afternoon of beautiful music performed by some outstanding local artists.
Outreach Looking for some volunteer opportunities this summer? Get to know your fellow St. Mark's parishioners while giving back to the Austin community by preparing a meal at Dell Children's Ronald McDonald House or sorting groceries at the new Capital Area Food Bank location. Please see the details below and sign up in the Parish Hall. If those dates don't work for you, please consider making a donation to Family Eldercare's Summer Fan Drive, which helps reduce the risk of life-threatening heat for lowincome seniors, adults with disabilities and families with children who do not have air conditioning or fans. Look for a donation box in the parish hall. Lastly, we will continue to collect food for the El Buen Samaritano Food Pantry. June collection items are baby formula and food, and July collection item is canned fruit and vegetables, low salt/sugar please.

June and July 2016 Ronald McDonald House Meal: Sunday, June 12th, 4-6 p.m. Mission: Work with other St. Mark's parishioners to plan and cook a buffet style dinner for 25-30 people in the RMDH kitchen to be served at 6 p.m.; A few volunteers will be needed to stay later to help clean up Capital Area Food Bank: Saturday, July 16th, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Mission: We need a team of 10 volunteers, ages 16 years or older, to help sort donated items at the food bank. (On June 1, the Capital Area Food Bank is changing its name to the Central Texas Food Bank.) Note: The food bank will be operating out of its new location near the airport in July: 6500 Metropolis Dr., Austin, TX 78744. Family Eldercare Fan Drive: The Summer Fan Drive kicks off in June. Many Thanks to Lark Anthony! Friday, May 29, was Lark’s last day to volunteer in the office, after 20 years. It takes a village to fill her shoes: Sylvia Fitz, Dee Ann Thomasson, Liz Davis, and Barbara Wilson will be the new Friday morning faces, working in rotation beginning June 3. The parish will be honoring Lark’s service at the 10 o’clock service on June 5th. The (now retired) Rev. Bill Bennett began the office guild shortly after his arrival at St. Mark's, to fill the gaps in the office coverage. He wanted parishioners and visitors alike to be greeted by a welcoming face and voice, either when they walked through the door or called on the phone. The office volunteers are a huge support to the staff each week: Pattie Rose is here most Tuesday afternoons, Carolyn Wier works every other Wednesday afternoon, and Amy Bierbower assists on Thursday mornings.
Christian Formation by Cathy Nelson, DRE There were so many suggestions and examples of being aware of my blessings last month that it seemed that gratitude was the theme of the month. And I was grateful for the reminders and signs of God’s presence in this often contentious and uneasy world. One whimsical reminder of gratitude came from one of our beloved Day School teachers. Ms. Vicky was wearing a t-shirt that read ““Thank You!” Mood” The t-shirt refers to a fabric store in New York City called Mood. The play on words was the perfect reminder that if we pay attention, we will always find something to be grateful for in our lives. Ms. Vicky’s enjoyment of life that she shares with St. Mark’s and our Day School children is one of those things! Another blessing that has come to mean a lot to me is the blessing I receive from my chiropractor at the end of each session. She quietly and gently puts her hand on my head and saying “blessings.” At first it was so brief and casual I didn’t know exactly that it was a blessing. Now, I watch for this unusual, but meaningful gesture, which provides me with an extra dose of healing. In last month’s newsletter, I wrote about the interview on the NPR show On Being with Krista Tippett and Tiffany Shlain, founder of the Webby Awards, co-founder of the Academy of Digital Arts and Science, documentarian and author. In the interview, “Growing Up the Internet,” Schlain said that she, like most parents, hopes to instill character and gratitude in her children. In her work, she came across something she had not heard of during her childhood as a “Cultural California Jew,” the Jewish practice of saying one hundred blessings a day, blessing every moment and everything. Mussar is the “Jewish lens of the science of character education.” Shlain found that when her children saw her really trying to acknowledge these moments as incredible moments they began to try to practice gratitude themselves. http://www.onbeing.org/program/tiffany-shlain-growing-up-the-internet/transcript/8554#main_content The idea of blessing God may seem odd. How can we bless God? In a Huffington Post article, “The Jewish Practice of 100 Blessings a Day Develops an Attitude of Gratitude” Nina Amir says, “In Judaism

June and July 2016 we are taught to say 100 blessings a day. All of these blessings really are times when we ‘bless’ God by saying thank you.” “This idea of constantly giving thanks for even minute things is the key to changing our overwhelmed thoughts into a constant positive mindset.” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jordilippe/work-life-balance_b_3238086.html. According to one scholar, you can recognize a Jewish blessing because it begins with “blessed art Thou.” Many of the Psalms begin with this phrase. And we can find many examples in our own liturgy and worship. But it might not be a practice we carry as easily into our lives during the rest of the week. Developing the discipline of looking for the blessings in our lives and offering thanks to God, whether we make it to 100 or not, might be a great way to begin. We can be grateful for those who are a blessing to us and also choose to be a blessing to others. Parents can make the sign of the cross or put a hand on their children's head and say, “May the Lord bless you and make you a blessing to others.” Or say something like, “Remember always that God loves you and I love you.” www.worshipingwithchildren.blogspot.com Thanks and blessings on all those who have worked with and have been a blessing to our St. Mark’s children and teens with their presence and love this year! VBS: Signs of Faith, will be held on June 13 to 17, 9 a.m.-noon. We will learn about God through Games, Science, Storytelling, Cooking, Art and Music Workshops. The Heifer Living Gift Market will be occurring around the time this newsletter goes out. Thanks to our supportive St. Mark’s parishioners, there will be food, decorations and tables to visit to learn more about the mission of Heifer International. The tables, a petting zoo, food and fellowship make this a wonderful family-oriented event and an easy way to highlight Heifer and its mission in the world and share our blessings with others. Mark your calendars and plan to attend! Parishioner Highlights Wow howdy! We once again highlight a family wherein judging the book by its cover doesn’t begin to speak to the excitement and intrigue that is between those covers. The Baxter-Harwell family (written by Susan) speaks to family dynamics, the challenge of working out the logistics of a long distance relationship, fascinating and multiple careers paths, and to their children that definitely are on their way to challenging and worthwhile careers. We thank them all for their contributions to the Austin community and especially to St. Mark’s!

Baxter-Harwell Family The Harwell and Baxter-Harwell family has five members including myself, Phillip, Winston and Emmaline. Lastly, we have a lovely chocolate lab named Truffles, who after being adopted from Heart of Texas Lab Rescue has learned all sorts of bad habits including counter surfing for loaves of bread. Phillip Harwell and I were married at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in 1988 in Weatherford, Texas. We lived in Weatherford for three years before beginning a 4-year period of commuting in our marriage living in different towns. We both got jobs in Austin and moved to the Travis Heights neighborhood in 1995. After our children were born, we decided to move to Barton Hills in 2007 for the schools and the quiet streets. We originally attended All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Austin but switched church membership to St. Mark’s when we moved to Barton Hills. After graduating from UT Arlington, Phil combined teaching Government and Economics at Weatherford High School and managing the White Elephant Beer Garden in the Historic Ft. Worth Stockyards. Phil attended Texas Christian University and earned his Masters of Business Administration and then took a job with the Texas Air Control Board in Houston. Phil then transferred to Austin to work for what is now the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. He retired from the State of Texas in 2006 to be a stay at home dad for our children. He excelled as a stay at home father and was a valued volunteer at Barton Hills Elementary. Three years ago, he re-entered the education field. He is currently a sixth grade teacher at Bailey Middle School teaching World Cultures. I work in the field of parks and natural resources. I received a Bachelor’s of Science in Parks and Leisure
Services from the University of North Texas. While at UNT, I was on full athletic scholarship as a football manager. My first job out of college was working for the Recreation Department for the City of Euless. I then took a job as the first Parks and Recreation Director hired by the City of Port Lavaca. When Phil was transferred to Austin, I began looking for a job in this area. We were tired of driving to see each other every weekend. I was offered a position at the Lower Colorado River Authority working for LCRA Parks and Resource Conservation. I have been employed at the LCRA for twenty-one years and work as the Park Operations Manager. I received my Masters of Business Administration from St. Edward’s University in 1999. Winston, age 19, attended the Liberal Arts and Science Academy and graduated in 2015. Winston is an Eagle Scout and was a member of the LBJ wrestling team all four years of high school. He is a sophomore at the Texas Maritime Academy at A&M Galveston and is studying to be a Marine Engineer. Winston will be spending most of the summer on a training cruise with the California Maritime College with ports-of-call including Puerto Rico, South Carolina, New York, Dominican Republic, and the Panama Canal – finishing at California. He is looking forward to eight weeks of training and travel. Emmaline, age 14, is graduating from O. Henry Middle School 8th grade this spring. She will attend Austin High School in the fall. Emmaline is an avid mountain bike rider and has ridden competitively since she was seven years old. Although only a middle school student, Emmaline was allowed to ride for the Austin High School Mountain Bike Team this year. Emmaline competed as a sophomore and won first in state. She will be participating in the Mountain Bike National Tournament in Mammoth, California, this summer. Emmaline also enjoys fashion, reading, and working with animals. As a family, we enjoy camping, socializing with extended family, and watching movies. With Boy

June and July 2016 Scouts and frequent mountain bike races, we camp regularly. We recently bought a tent trailer and are looking forward to camping in style and comfort. My sister and parents live in the Austin area and we meet often for dinner and family events. Phil’s mother, age 94, and his brother live in Ft. Worth. We travel to visit as often as we can.
We have felt very fortunate to be members of St. Mark’s. We value the leadership and compassion of Reverend Turner and the warm and inviting community of the church. Both of our children have been acolytes and I serve on the alter guild. Having such a wonderful church within walking distance of our home has been a gift and a treasure.
