St. Mark’s News Volume 19/Issue 6

From the Assistant Rector I’m not one who typically tries to read the tea leaves. It’s not that I don’t take God to be alive and active in the mundane things. I very much do––my life, in fact, depends on it. It’s just that I don’t think I can always trust myself to be an authoritative interpreter of where God’s action is present. And so, for me to come to the point of saying with any kind of certainty that one thing or another is “God’s will” . . . well, it takes a lot. The first week of January, I got a rather strange phone call from the head of the search committee at All Saints Episcopal Church in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The parish name was one that I recognized, as I had several previous connections to it. The In this Issue Dean/President of my seminary, The Very Rev. Dr. Paul F.M. Zahl, for From the Assistant .................... 1 instance, had served as one of their previous Rectors. A classmate of mine Vestry Highlights ....................... 3 in seminary was a second connection, as he had served at All Saints as Outreach ................................... 4 Assistant Rector shortly after graduation. All Saints also has developed a Parish Life ................................. 6 shared ministry with Christ Episcopal Church in Charlottesville, Virginia, Parishioner Highlights ............... 8 where I took my first ministry job out of college almost ten years ago. Christian Formation ................... 9 Celebrations ............................ 10 I was not looking for a job at the time. I had, after all, just come to St. Caffeine Ministry ...................... 11 Mark’s three months prior, and have loved my time here. Moreover, I had ROTA ...................................... 12 only become engaged to Janna. This meant, among other things, that we were in the initial stages of talking “future,” and the early stages of our planning was leading us toward taking a “transition year” in Waco. In this scenario, I would press forward and finish (most of) my dissertation by the summer of 2016, while continuing to commute to St. Mark’s part-time during the week. We thought of this as a good chance to get settled into our marriage.

I relented to an interview for essentially two reasons. The first is that it was just an interview, and for a young professional (in any field), an interview is a good thing. The second reason I agreed to interview was that I was already in Washington D.C. that week for a family visit. Months passed. Looking back, one of the funny things that happened during these months is that I bought a fridge for my home in Waco. It’s a funny remembrance because I had been holding off for months on buying a new fridge (after my freezer broke the previous summer) because I didn’t want to make a big purchase until I proposed to Janna, and we knew where we were going to live the following year. By February, we had become “sure” enough that we would be going forward with our “transition year” plan, and put a new fridge in my home in Waco. However, as time passed, a few things started to change for us, mostly as a result of our time in pre-marital counseling. The first is that we became increasingly wary of starting our married life split between two cities. Having spent most of our dating life “long-distance,” we wanted marriage to represent a move toward presence and stability. The reasons are a bit more complex, but, in essence, we began to feel that the best thing we could do for our marriage was to start out on a new adventure, in a place that would be new to both of us.

June and July 2015 The irony of this is that this actually led us, around the middle of March, to ask Elizabeth+ about the possibilities of my coming on full-time at St. Mark’s. We began to wonder, “Could Austin be that new adventure and new place?” It was at the same time (literally, within days) that All Saints in Maryland called back to see if I would be interested in a second interview––more than two months from when I first met with them in January. To make the timing even more serendipitous, their call came a week before I was already scheduled to be passing through the Washington D.C. area, on my way to give a paper at the University of Virginia. It was two Thursdays later – which was Maundy Thursday, April 2nd – that I received a call from the Rector at All Saints offering me the position of Associate Rector at their church. It would be wrong to say that I was surprised. However, it was still very much the case that I was nowhere near prepared to make a decision like this, not least because I was still sure my bride wouldn’t go for it. So, I told them that before we could make our decision, Janna and I would need to spend some time getting to know their parish on a more personal level. In response to this, they invited us to come be with them for a few days in late April. When we left for the trip, I felt the odds were 60/40 against our taking the job. But remember what I said about the tea leaves? Something happened to Janna on that trip. I’ll admit, this scared me a little. Up until that point, I’d had the freedom to imagine the possibility without the pressure or responsibility of having to make the decision––Janna was going to do that for me, and the decision was going to be “no.” I started to pray. It would be difficult to describe what happened next. Part of this was that every door that we thought would be closed turned out to be wide open. After Janna, for example, I thought the next “no” I would receive would be from my dissertation supervisor at Baylor. To the contrary, he told me that All Saints had already contacted him in their search process, and assured him that they would not only create the space in my schedule for me to complete my dissertation, but would also personally support that work in whatever way they could. In view of this, my advisor said he hoped I would go with his blessing. Another part of this was the way certain happenstances seemed to align such that, it was hard not to see the Holy Spirit at work. A fun and surprising example came one evening when I was confessing to Janna that I thought there might be some ego involved in my attraction to All Saints. All Saints has nearly 2,000 members in one of the wealthiest parts of Washington D.C. ––which is to say, it’s one of the most influential parishes in one of the most influential cities. When I said this to Janna, almost as if on cue, she asked me if I had ever read The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo. But apparently, she had for some reason picked up the novel and skimmed through it that day. The Alchemist is the story of a young shepherd boy who goes out on a journey in search for glory, but finds his soul purified instead. I was speechless. At the end of the day, in fact, there was really only one thing hard about the decision for me, that made us drag our feet until the very end––and that was, we did not want to leave St. Mark’s. We feel as if we have just arrived. It feels strange to be leaving so soon. This is especially the case because we have come to love being here more and more each day that has passed. More than this––we have come to love you. There is nothing I can say that will adequately express my sorrow that our time here is coming so (read: too) quickly to an end. But I hope you will accept, at the very least, my most sincere and hearty “thank you.” You deserve this “thank you” for many reasons, but for one, perhaps, above all others. It would be no exaggeration to say that being here with you this past year has restored my sense of vocation. I have spent most of my years in ministry in places that were experiencing a great deal of brokenness and transition. These experiences have been marked by a great deal of anxiety and frustration. They have been hard years. They have made me wonder: can I really give my life to this?

June and July 2015 The greatest compliment I can pay to you as a people is that I would not have been able to leave St. Mark’s were it not for St. Mark’s. And please believe me when I say: I leave here in the full knowledge that I have received more from you than I ever could have given to you. So, at the end of all this, let me say again: thank you. You have my heart. And you will remain, ever, in ours. NJL+

Mark Your Calendars for July 12 At 11:00 a.m. to Say Farewell to Nate+ and Janna as They Begin Their Adventure of Married Life in a New Place! We will have a salad potluck wedding shower/farewell for both of them, the Sunday before their wedding on the 18th.

Vestry Highlights The St. Mark’s Vestry met in the Bennett Wing Classroom at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19. The meeting opened with the collect for St. Dunstan, whose feast day it was. The agenda and minutes from the April meeting were approved, with two date corrections). The Rector’s report included:    

Google Fiber will not pay the Wilson plumbing bill because the main waste water line that was ruptured was not on the map provided by City of Austin. We have filed a claim with the City of Austin legal department, and if they won’t pay we will submit a claim to the Church Insurance Group. On April 24 Elizabeth+ and Michele Bonner met with the Commission for bi-vocational priesthood, and she was approved. Since then she has met with Bishop Harrison and her next step is registering for the Iona School. A $20,000 check was written this week to Mobile Loaves and Fishes for the purchase of a micro-home for the Community First! Village. We took $5500 from the Habitat for Humanity budget, $3000 from the Outreach Designated Fund, and $11,500 out of the Special Projects 2015 line item. There was discussion about hiring a new Assistant since Nate+ and Janna will be moving to Chevy Chase, MD in August. After discussion, the Vestry approved a resolution to search for, and to hire a full-time Assistant to the Rector, paying up to $72,000 for a salary/benefit package (and moving expenses if necessary with a cap of $80,000) In 2009 the General Convention of the Episcopal Church passed a resolution mandating Churches to provide pension benefits to lay employees as of Jan, 2013. St. Mark’s has been remiss in meeting this obligation so as of September we will begin providing the 5% mandated amount to our lay employees – paid to the Church Pension Fund. The deck will be painted some time this summer.

The Assistant Rector’s report included:   

An update on the MeetUp effort. A new series of topics will be discussed, and meetings will be every other week. The email list has grown, though not the attendance. Nate+ and Meredith Childs are pursuing two new initiatives: an expansion of the Newcomers Committee and the possibility of a class for Newcomers Nate+ also shared a bit about his call to All Saints in Chevy Chase (see his article in this newsletter)

June and July 2015 The Senior Warden JP Kloninger spoke about opportunities for supporting the Costa Rica mission and suggested we might offer financial help in the amount of $2,500. We decided to wait on a decision until the August meeting, after JP will have visited the site. He then presented the financial report for the previous month. Pledge payments were down in April, but overall we are still above the year-to-date budgeted amount. Every member of the vestry received a copy of the Agreed-Upon Procedures Report from the firm of Montemayor Hill Britton & Bender PC. The only finding of note was one that we anticipated, and that was that a best practice would be to have two people involved with our weekly deposit rather than one as it currently stands. Nancy Kibler gave the Day School Report. Seven Board members needed to be replaced, and the vestry voted to approve the seven: Lindsey Gehrig (parishioner), Dan Aja (parishioner), Lora Ferguson, Rose Jennings (parishioner), Ashley Phillips (parishioner), Chas Semple, and Meredith Young. The three continuing Board members are Carrie Semple, Abby Raines (parishioner), and John Minne (parishioner). There are still openings for the 2015-2016 school year. Other reports included Education, Outreach, and Parish Life.

This ministry was started to fill the need of homeless women in need of a place to shower in safety, without the fear of having their possessions stolen. We have accomplished that goal and continue to provide a warm, welcoming environment for them. In 2010, Susan Willis was president of the Women's Group, and Suzann Dvorken was the driving force that got this ministry started. Thank you to all present and past volunteers and supporters of this amazing ministry! Music Notes An exciting Youth Choir Concert is coming in July--HOST HOMES ARE NEEDED! On Sunday, July 19, the Chapel Choir of Christ United Methodist Church in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, will perform at St. Mark’s as part of their annual summer choir tour. Located in suburban Pittsburgh, the 3,200 member Christ United Methodist Church is one of the largest Methodist congregations in the Northeast. Nearly 250 musicians participate in the church’s eleven choral and instrumental ensembles. Before moving to Austin, Mark Reed served as Organist and Associate Director of Music at Christ Church for seven years. The Chapel choir is composed of 45 youth and 11 adult chaperones. They sing weekly at the early worship service during the school year, and they make an annual summer tour. They sing many styles of music from classical to spirituals and from gospel to contemporary Christian. Their concerts are always lots of fun, including instrumental soloists, drums, percussion, and piano. The tour is the culmination of their season and is an opportunity for the youth to travel and share their faith as they sing, meet new people, and bond as a group of young Christians. Plan now to attend this exciting concert, and consider whether you might be willing to host two or more of the choir members (or chaperones) at your home for the night. Host families will stay after the concert to be introduced to their houseguests. Host families should provide breakfast (something simple is fine!) and then bring their guests back to the church the following morning. The students are accustomed to various accommodations such as couches, air mattresses, host family sleeping bags, etc., in addition to regular beds. If you are interested in helping out by serving as a host home on Sunday night, July 19, SIGN UP ON THE SHEET IN THE PARISH HALL For more information please contact Mark Reed by email or phone: mreed1685@gmail.com 512-203-1780

Summer Schedule of Worship Begins June 7! During the months of June, July, and August our Sunday services will be at 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. The Wednesday night service is at 6:00 p.m. in Grace Chapel.

Parishioner Highlights Here’s another couple, Bill & Susan Willis, who visited various parishes and chose to stay at St. Mark’s because they were made to feel welcome! That definitely is a recurring theme, and it holds true today. These native Texans have indeed made a difference by what they have accomplished in their chosen professions and for St. Mark’s. Bill served as Executive Assistant to the Texas Supreme Court, and special kudos to Susan for writing the grant application that served as a grand start for the Shower Ministry! I for one would love to see their home after Susan’s museum-like description and just may take her up on her offer to stop by. Beth Chenoweth

Bill and Susan Willis We have been members of the St. Mark’s family for many years. We chose St. Mark’s, after visiting several Episcopal churches in the area, because people greeted made us feel welcome. Now we try to “pay it forward” when encountering a new face at church. Both of us are, or have been, lay readers. Until my parents started requiring so much assistance (they are 93 and 91) I enjoyed being on the Vestry and serving as president of the Women’s Group. I consider the highlight of that being asked by Suzann Dvorkan to write the grant application for money to start the Shower Ministry at the Trinity Center. Our ladies have done an outstanding job of expanding that mission and making it a model program. Also, with the help of Becky Nolan, Liz Davis, Susan Erwin, Jack Minor and the generous support of our parishioners, we collected furniture and supplies to furnish several apartments for refugee families sent to Austin by the Episcopal Diocese of Texas through Refugee Services of Texas. I am looking forward to the day I can again be active and accept some more responsibilities, but right now I am content meeting with the exceptionally talented group of St. Mark’s ladies who meet once a month to exhibit a variety of sewing, quilting, knitting, crochet, and purse making talents and skills. Come be crafty with us! Bill is from a rural Texas county seat that he left as soon as he could. After graduating from UT Law School, he spent seven years in the Army Judge Advocate General’s Corp. Three of those years were in Frankfurt, Germany. After a few years in private

practice, Bill worked for the Houston/Galveston Area Council of Governments organizing and funding administrative support for state and county courts. He continued that work in the Governor’s Office Criminal Justice Division in Austin, and that’s where we met. I left to work for the Texas Historical Commission and Bill moved on to be the Executive Assistant to the Texas Supreme Court for 27 years. Then I taught in the Austin public schools for 15 years before I retired. Bill and I have been married for 38 years. I am a native Austinite and a UT graduate. My oldest son, Bradley Blackstone, lives in a community home run by the Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows in Alexandria, Louisiana. Our son, Marcus, recently married at age 36. He and Nicole live in Austin. Marcus has been a chef and a butcher, and Nicole has worked in the restaurant business most of her adult life. They are excellent cooks and often prepare delicious family meals. We love having them so close. Our other children are two miniature schnauzers that Bill loves more than he loves me! They are the fourth and fifth schnauzers we have had since we have been married, and they are spoiled rotten. Bill was a history major and has been fascinated by ancient Romans since the age of twelve. He enjoys attending archaeological lectures at UT. Our house is lined with history and art books from floor to ceiling in every room. Along the walls are plaster busts of ancient Romans that have been cast from pieces from European museums. Before we married people would say, “Aren’t you going to have fun decorating Bill’s house?” to which I would reply, “Can’t touch it!” Except for my sewing room, our house is like living in a library/museum. We live in an older 1950s neighborhood bordered by Barton Springs Road, South Lamar, Treadwell and Kinney Avenue. Bill landscapes the back yard (very Roman garden-ish) and I am in charge of the front.

June and July 2015 We enjoy the bird and lizard habitats we have created. Our neighbors and are like family to us. There are still a few old-timers left “in the hood” and also several couples who have young children that

they love to share with us. We have a front patio and a cabinet of toys and children’s books, so our place is the “go to” house for visiting in the evenings. We would love to have you stop by sometime!

Christian Formation for Youth by Cathy Nelson, DRE Families came together for the Church School Mission Sunday in May to make animal crackers and bird feeders to sell during the Heifer Living Gift Market. The Rev. Cecilia Smith organized the event and led a service for the families. The proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Austin Zoo to help support two brother foxes, Mik and Nik. Thank you all for your efforts! Visit www.austinzoo.org to see photos of the foxes. The Heifer Living Gift Market, on May 31 at noon, will be occurring around the time this newsletter goes out. Thanks to our supportive St. Mark’s parishioners, there will be food, decorations Thanks VBS and tables to visit to learn more about the mission of Heifer International. The tables, a Volunteers and petting zoo, food and fellowship make this a wonderful family-oriented event and an Leaders! easy way to highlight Heifer and its mission in the world. Thank you all for taking part in it! Mark your calendars and plan to attend! For more information about Heifer, Danielle Adkins Mayra Alvarez please go to www.heifer.org. As with the Heifer event, we count on parishioners to come together to run St. Mark’s Vacation Bible School. Every year, our program has grown, while the number of stayat-home parents has shrunk. And each year, after much prayer and planning what seems like an old-fashioned model becomes a moment of celebration of community. The VBS community includes many young children from the Day School and the nearby neighborhoods, along with some of St. Mark’s members; St. Mark’s teens and returning college students; and many, many volunteers and caregivers. Together we play, sing, listen and learn in a multi-generational event. And we come away blessed! As Emily Given, Director of Children and Family Ministry at Saint Michael and All Angels Church in Dallas, wrote after their 2014 VBS, “VBS, camp and mission trips can be so much more if we focus on community and not about (on) product. Together we can write a faith story that is filled with love, connection and grace. It is the place where faith can take root like no other place if we just notice the power of the moment and the gifts of the people gathered.” This year’s VBS, Psalms and Songs, will be held on June 15 to 19. We will learn about God through Games, Science, Storytelling, Cooking, Art and Music Workshops. The volunteers, teens and other leaders work very hard as they prepare for the program and lead the workshops, and I would like to thank them all! You are much appreciated!

Warm thanks to Bill Kibler for the beautiful new bookshelf in the Parish Hall. The new addition will make it easier to create an adult library for St. Mark’s community. Please feel free to borrow and/or add books to the library!

Summer is a great time to browse through the library; visit with other parishioners in the Parish Hall after church while children play on the playground; or join in one of the great Families with Young Children events! We will continue to have Chapel at 10:00 a.m. for children ages 4 to 6, every Sunday through the summer. Church School classes will begin in September.
