Summer at St. Mark’s . . . a Season of Giving!

Thanks to St. Mark’s Outreach Committee and other groups, there is no shortage of opportunities to help others this summer. Take a moment to see how you can get involved with St. Mark’s upcoming outreach efforts.

Our El Buen food donation item for the month of June is cereal; for the month of July it’s pasta and canned tomato sauce. Bring your donations to the collection bins in the Parish Hall.

On two Sundays in June—the 16th and the 23rd—we will be collecting small gifts for new moms who complete prenatal education classes offered by El Buen. Please bring items a new mom could use to pamper herself: soap, lotion, shampoo, nail polish, etc. Children who attend our Vacation Bible School the week of June 17 – 21 will also be asked to contribute to this outreach opportunity.

June 22 & 24: Ronald McDonald House Dinner Preparation. Come help plan and prepare a meal for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House whose children are receiving treatment at Children’s Dell Hospital.

What: We need two teams of 8 people. Volunteers are responsible for planning, buying, and preparing the food to be served buffet style.

Vestry Highlights The St. Mark’s Vestry met at 7:00 p.m. on May 21, 2013, in the Bennett Wing classroom.

In the Rector’s report, Elizabeth+ 

  

Gave a Coke machine report: because ours is such a low volume account Coke wanted to reclaim the machine. However, we have found someone (Johnny Tibbs) who will include our machine on his account and will purchase product and service our machine for us.

Reported that we will receive $3,000 from Bobby Waldrop’s estate.

Gave an overview of the many activities during the month of May: Chicken BBQ and picnic, Baptisms, Evensong, Golf Tournament, and a wedding.

Announced that the four Men’s Golf Scholarship recipients will be Allison Camp, Bonnie Nolan, Katey Orndorff, and Carey Stangl.

Travis+ reported on the youth ministry: he and Mike Brode cleaned out the shed for use by the youth; the youth served their first meal to the neighbors at the Trinity Center on Sunday, May 5, and their next scheduled date is June 30 (with another possible date in August); summer plans are still pending.

Andrew Poynot gave the Sr. Warden’s report: the deck will be repainted on May 28, and he reported on the recent golf tournament.

Bo Overstreet gave the Finance Committee report: we will net approximately $5,200 for the golf tournament; our year-to-date income is at 119.02%; we were billed a “tamper fee” by the utility company because someone broke the lock and box on the parking lot meter.

Elizabeth+ gave a Day School report: there are four new Board members, one of whom (Erin Portman) is a parishioner; parishioner Sam Greer will be the Board President next school year; admissions numbers look good to date, with most spaces available in the 2 day 2’s class; there are several teacher changes, including Becky Janes who will be lead teacher for the 3 day 2’s and the assistant teacher in Miss Vicky’s pre-K class two days a week; a generous financial gift was given to Gina Newton in honor of her service as Head of the Day School.

Women’s News On Wednesday, May 15, 2013, The Trinity Center of St. David's honored The Shower Ministry at the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Event. The 2013 Bell Award honored Ms. Suzann Dvorken for “Launching and Shepherding the St. Mark's Shower Project.” A second Bell Award was given to “The Women of St. Mark's for Ongoing and Devoted Service to the St. Mark's Shower Project.” This expression of appreciation shows that the Shower Project has become a beacon of light to the homeless women by bringing them a basic shower that provides them with a sense of safety, peace, respect, and love. The philosophy of the Shower Project continues to be “love thy neighbor as thyself.” Congratulations to ALL HONORED VOLUNTEERS! It's Summertime...Ladies please mark your schedules for Monday, June 24th, and Monday, July 22nd, for Potluck & Bunco! Even though is summer let's not break the monthly sweet release of enjoying dinner & the roll of the dice that lightens the spirit of fellowship. The Dynamic Duo of Potluck & Bunco doesn't make the world go round, but it certainly makes the ride a lot of fun. Setup begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by Potluck dinner at 7:00 p.m.

The 10 annual St. Mark’s Men’s Golf Tournament was played under sunny skies (and on a slightly soggy course) on Saturday, May 11. We had about 70 golfers and a record amount of money was raised for the scholarship fund.

On Sunday, June 2, we will award scholarships to four graduating high school seniors: Allison Camp, Bonnie Nolan, Katey Orndorff, and Carey Stangl. Many thanks to all who golfed or supported the tournament in some way, and congratulations to the scholarship recipients!

Second Annual St. Mark’s Bicycle Ride Saturday, June 15, at 8:00 a.m.

All St. Mark’s cyclists are invited to join the Second Annual St. Mark’s Bicycle Ride. All levels of ability are welcome – no one will be left behind. The ride will start at 8:00 a.m. at the Buda Library. San Marcos (and back) is the destination. The ride is about 34 miles round trip. Men of St. Mark’s Fishing Trip August 11-13, 2013 Become a part of the fishing tradition here at St. Mark’s! On August 11, we will be leaving right after church and carpool to the coast, returning either late Monday evening or Tuesday afternoon, depending on your schedule. The cost at The Captain’s Quarters Inn per person will be $62/night ($121.00 for both nights, based on double occupancy).

Currently, the total price of lodging and fishing is estimated at approximately $300/person, not including gas, food, and other incidental expenses. Because it is a chartered trip, the more people who come, the lower the price. Both deep sea fishing and bay fishing are available, depending on your preference. Rod, reel, and guides are included in either excursion.

This trip is a valuable time for St. Mark’s men, young and seasoned, to bond over exaggerated story-telling, cold beer, and enjoying God’s creation. After a long day on the boats, the pool at the Inn is great for lounging around and reliving the day. There are plenty of restaurant choices near the motel. From the garden ~ Joanne, Joanne, how does your garden grow? With begonias, snaps, dianthus, and violets all in a row!

On a recent stroll down the Foote-path leading to the office, I was completely awed by the beauty all along the walkway. Parish Admin Joanne Foote walks this path each day and sprinkles her magic as she goes. In the past six months, in addition to planting beautiful annual and perennial blooms, Joanne has brought in new shrubbery, enhanced the existing ferns and natives, and thinned aspidistra from her own yard to enhance our shade-loving entrance. It is beautiful! Mother Nature rewards our efforts by providing almost instant pop with even a small amount of effort, and Joanne has been a gardener on a grand scale these past six months! Thanks so much from all of us who daily enjoy the fruits of your labor!

McKinney Isle is another place of utter beauty. I know there are parishioners who park on the other side of the island for the simple delight of walking through the pathways of McKinney Isle to admire the roses and other carefully chosen and tended plantings that Al has nurtured. This spring he has been spotted quietly working the right side of the entrance driveway, into the newly cleared patch beyond the railing. This parishioner is wondering where his green thumb will land next...

And, this spring, thanks to time and cooperative rains, the once tiny installations along the sanctuary wall are finally strutting their stuff. The Knockout roses were gorgeous in April and continue to please. Becky Nolan’s work at the corner is rewarding us all with consistent and established beauty, as are Dee Ann Thomasson’s special projects in the front.

There are other areas out there waiting for your attention and ideas. Adopt a Spot and help St. Mark’s grow!

Camp hours are M-F: 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Please note there are no camps the weeks of June 17 or July 1. Cost: $150/week. EfM Informational Meeting on Sunday, July 21 Since the Reformation of the 1500s clergy have urged parishioners to read the Bible, but it’s often difficult to make it through the wilderness of Leviticus, the blood bath of Judges, and the symbolism of Revelation on your own. EfM (Education for Ministry) doesn't just give members information about the Bible, it helps develop their own mature, sound theological understanding of how God is at play in their lives. Offered through the Seminary of the South at Sewanee, EfM is open to all who want to understand the Bible and the rich history and traditions of our faith while enriching their relationship with God. St. Mark’s is ready to move forward with planning for the next EfM year. The group meets one evening a week during the school year and is open to all. The mentors for the group are Linda Crannell and Lisa Martin.

We will be holding an informational meeting to discuss the program and answer questions on Sunday, July 21, after the 10:00 service in the large classroom in the Bennett Wing. Anyone already planning to participate and anyone interested in learning more about EfM are welcome to attend. This is a chance to ask all your questions about the program and to sign up. We hope to see you there!

Christian Formation For Children and Youth (by Cathy Nelson, Director of Religious Education) We kick off the summer with the Heifer Living Gift Market on Sunday, June 2, after the 10:00 a.m. service.

Parishioners have signed up to provide food and decorations and to staff each animal table. The information tables, a petting zoo, food and fellowship make this a wonderful family-oriented event and an easy way to highlight Heifer and its mission in the world. Thank you all for taking part in it! Mark your calendars and plan to attend! For more information about Heifer, please go to www.heifer.org St. Mark’s Vacation Bible School, Noah and the Ark, based on curriculum from PowerXpress, will be held on June 17 to 21. At this time, we welcome church members and others to St. Mark’s to learn about God through Games, Science, Storytelling, Cooking, Art, and Music Workshops. The volunteers and other leaders work very hard as they prepare for the program and lead the workshops, and I would like to thank them all! You are much appreciated!

Summer is a great time to visit with other parishioners in the Parish Hall after church while children play on the playground, or join in one of the great Families with Young Children events! We will continue to have Chapel at 10:00 a.m. for children ages 4 to 6, every Sunday through the summer.

Although the fall seems a long time away, please be thinking about how you would like to help with our children’s programs next year. We will continue to offer Godly Play classes for Pre-K and Kindergarten and for 1st and 2nd graders, and classes for our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, Middle School and High School students.

Finally, but most importantly, I’d like to thank all of those who work with our children, helping create a loving environment in which they can come to know God: St. Mark’s Church School teachers; Chapel leaders; VBS leaders and teen helpers; Youth Group Leaders; Acolyte Masters; Youth Lector Coaches; Christian Ed Committee members and the many unnamed parents who faithfully helped out with all of these jobs.

Another warm thanks to Bill Kibler for the beautiful new addition of shelves in our Godly Play classroom. The extra end pieces finish off the shelving with just enough space for our storytelling materials!

Parishioner Highlights Amy Bierbower is yet another essential piece of the fabric that held St. Mark’s together in some of its early years. She was to be commended for stepping up and doing what needed to be done and holding positions when those in charge needed to move on. Amy, for all the services you have provided, we thank you and wish you well with your roses and your new condo.

Amy Bierbower Family. My parents, grandparents, and younger brother (sole sibling) are deceased and my closest living relatives are cousins. My cousin Woodie’s oldest daughter is my god child, Selena Baker Urquhart. She married and now lives in Dallas— Mrs. Alan Fraser Urquhart. I don’t count pets, although I hope all our animal friends are heaven-bound.

My family came to Austin from Killeen, when my father retired from the army. I started at UT. in 1960. Our neighbors on Fair Oaks Drive, Tom and Mildred Taylor, invited us to St. Mark’s (one of Malcolm Riker’s Missions). As Army gypsies, we had not been regular members of “our” Episcopal church, but I had been confirmed when we were in Birmingham, Alabama, and had fairly regular attendance at St. Matthew’s in Henderson, Texas.

I had often stayed with my Methodist grandparents there and had attended church, Sunday school,

and YPSL (Young People’s Service League) with Carrie May Hedge and her daughters, Ann and Sharon.

History at St. Mark’s. I sang in the choir at St. Mark’s, and after our organist, Carol Mulholland (?), left to get married, I “filled in” at the organ for about 12 years. I also helped with a few Sunday school classes when no one else was available and worked with the junior choir. My music background is limited: a few years of basic beginner piano lessons and church choir experience. When Charles and Susan Tipton joined St. Mark’s, following Father Raish to Austin, I turned over the organ to Susan so Charles could lead the choir. I then went back to singing in the choir.

I filled in for one year as President of the Women’s Group, when the Vice-President that should have moved into the role moved out of town. I then kept the position “warm” for my Vice-President, Elvie Swail, who was expecting a baby that year.

June and July 2013 Occupations. After receiving my B.A. in French/Italian/Sociology—none of which led to paying jobs—I worked 4 years at TRACOR as a clerk in their library and also in document control.

I left work to return to UT for a graduate course in Library Science but was unable to complete the master’s degree when an automobile accident deprived me of my spleen.

I went back to clerical work as a library assistant in the General Libraries at UT. I worked in Bindery Preparation, in the Communication Library, and in the Art and Music libraries which were being combined into the Fine Arts Library. I worked in the General Libraries until I retired 34 years later.

Neighborhood. I recently moved from the house that I shared with Mrs. Don Raish to the West Creek Landing condominiums. It is a small condo on Brush Country Road, just off Wm. Cannon in SW Austin. I’m getting to meet my neighbors (mostly my age, 70, or older) at the cluster mailbox or out with their dogs. My cats are indoor pets.

Despite the proximity to Wm. Cannon, the neighborhood is quiet with no through traffic. The previous owner of my unit had a rose garden, and her roses have been blooming for me. I’m no gardener so my fervent hope is to keep them alive.

Hobbies/Interests. I still love the music, but osteoarthritis in my knees and hips have kept me

Please fill in an application for children attending and teens working with us! Teens are paid $25 for the week. They are required to attend a VBS orientation the week before VBS. This year, VBS is based on Noah from PowerXpress. The children will learn about God’s promise of forgiveness and th th his love for the people of God. There will be childcare for young children of parent leaders and youth from 6 to 12 grade are invited to help us during the week. Please let us know how you are able to help with VBS this year. We’d love to share this great experience with both you and your children!
