From the Rector O God, by the leading of a star you manifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth: Lead us, who know you now by faith, to your presence, where we may see your glory face to face; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen Epiphany: 1. An appearance or manifestation, especially of a deity.

2. A Christian festival, observed on January 6, commemorating the manifestation of Christ to the gentiles in the persons of the Magi; Twelfth Day. 3. A sudden, intuitive perception of or insight into reality or the essential meaning of something, often initiated by some simple, commonplace occurrence.

Epiphany is both a feast and a season. It is a season of manifestation, or perception, and of insight into the essential meaning of Someone, rather than of something. On the church calendar, the Magi arrive on the twelfth day: January 6. These, however, are not the details that are essential.

Here is what I believe to be most essential: 1. Christ was manifested to these Gentiles from the East. This child born to be “King of the Jews” was actually born to be King of both Jew and Gentile: “By the leading of a star you manifested your only Son to the peoples of the earth.”

January 2014 2. The Magi went first to Jerusalem, assuming that this child born to be King of the Jews would be born in the city of David. They did not expect to find a royal child living in humble circumstances in Bethlehem. Indeed, it was this humility that marked Christ’s life and ministry.

3. The Magi presented the Christ child with three gifts that signaled something true about his identity: gold was a gift for a king; frankincense was a gift of worship; and myrrh was oil used with frankincense and also for embalming dead bodies. The three gifts alluded to his sovereignty, to his deity, and to his death.

Epiphany recalls an event, an event that is marked by a Christian festival. But Epiphany is also that season which precedes Lent. And it is during this season we are about to mark that we have an opportunity to ask each day how Christ has manifested himself to us, and to others. During the month of November a number of people were daily posting something they were grateful for.

Then during Advent they were daily posting where they saw the light of Christ. And now during Epiphany we can ask about daily manifestations of his presence in our lives, and in the lives of others. As I write this it is the day before the first anniversary of the Newtown shooting – a day we will always remember as a slaughter of the innocents. But what has impressed me about this anniversary is that there is conversation about forgiveness; conversation about not wanting to be consumed by hatred. This is an epiphany; a manifestation of the truth about the Christ child. He was born among us to bring forgiveness and reconciliation to all peoples – both Jew and Gentile.

This is the good news of the gospel.

Meet the Five New Vestry Members Mark Breen .

Mark Breen originally comes from Massachusetts but has lived in Austin since 1985.

He is an engineer at Novati Technologies where he helps bring new product designs into production. Mark has been active in community organizations such Habitat for Humanity and the Zilker Elementary PTA, where he served as the dyslexia subcommittee chair. Mark has two children: Zhaleh and Luke. Zhaleh is a recent graduate of Indiana University, and Luke attends Zilker Elementary. Mark and his family have been members of St. Mark’s since 2006. He has been active in children’s chapel and the facilities committee, and he serves as an usher.

I am a “cradle Episcopalian” as they say. I have been a member of St. Mark’s for 15 years now since I moved from New York City to Austin. I sing in the choir, I have been a member of the Marthas, and I was instrumental in founding the Shower Ministry.

Suzann Dvorken .

St. Mark’s was a very important component of my new life in Austin. The friends I have made here and the continual support of this congregation have been and are invaluable to me. I am honored to serve on the vestry.

Karen Milton .

As the daughter of a West Pointer, a Peace Corps Volunteer, and then the wife of a Foreign Service Officer, I moved a lot. Every three years, on the average, and sometimes more often, I’d make another major move to a different country, often on a different continent. That life was a great way to keep possessions down to a minimum; have new experiences; and learn about different cultures, languages and people.

It was not, however, a great way to develop friendships or find a community. Michael and I relocated to Austin in September of 2007, so I’ve lived here significantly longer than anywhere else in my entire life. St. Mark’s became part of my Austin life from our first Sunday in town. Oh my goodness: for the first time I was part of a permanent community!

I didn’t really know what a community was, but I soon found out. St. Mark’s has been supporting, accepting, loving, trusting, and sharing. The Altar Guild trusts me to polish, set up, wash and iron. The Marthas accept my help when my teaching commitments with Austin Community College allow it. Occasionally I serve as a lector, reading aloud words from Scripture that I study and try to understand. The relationship we have with God and with each other encouraged me during the three years I represented women from our convocation at the Diocesan level of ECW. St. Mark’s understands the miseries of a cross-bridge rush-hour commute and indulges my decision to enroll in Education for Ministry classes away from our Parish. You all know that I would never leave St. Mark’s.

After two and a half years of practicing my juggling of prayer book, hymnal, and genuflections, I was confirmed in the Episcopal Church in spring of 2000. I took an ecumenical Cursillo during an assignment in Geneva, Switzerland, experiencing the truth that service to our church is thanksgiving for our faith. I welcome the opportunity to devote some of my Tuesday evenings to vestry business over the next three years. With God’s help I will learn more of the practical aspects of steering a church community and will assist as best I can.

January 2014 I have been a member of St. Mark’s since moving to Austin almost four years ago.

My journey with the Episcopal Church started as a teenager with an EYC group in Houston in the late 1960s. I later began attending the Episcopal Church with my high school girlfriend who is now my wife. As a young parent attending St. Nicholas Episcopal Church in Midland, I served on two Vestries and as a delegate to the Annual Council on several occasions (including a Bishop’s election), and my wife and I served for three years as EYC sponsors. I was active in the Men’s Group and served as Head Usher for several years. My two sons were acolytes and one was active in the youth group. Through the Church, I got involved with Christmas in April, screened applicants for Habitat for Humanity, and worked at two different food banks. I have to admit I reached a point of burn out where I was not getting the spiritual sustenance I needed and began to limit my church involvement to services and a few activities I enjoyed.

David Randle.

My background includes degrees in business and engineering from UT Austin. I have worked in the oil and gas business throughout my career. I have worked for big companies, small companies, and on my own. I am now wrapping it up at my job with the state focused on safety violations, pollution violations, emergency management and homeland security.

Most of my spare time is spent with family (including two exceptional granddaughters), our dog, reading, watching movies, swimming, walking, and very light morning yoga. We try to travel at least once per year. As perhaps expected, I also am involved with home maintenance projects, extended family support, and retirement management.

Most of my adult life I have considered my Church to be part of my extended family. That entails a commitment of time, energy, and money. I am honored to be nominated to serve on the Vestry of St. Mark’s. I prayed about my decision to serve and feel good about moving forward. Working with other devoted people to further the work of Christ offers unique fulfillment and hopefully will provide a better world, if just in a small way. I have always considered the first two commandments of Christ to be about all I can handle and all I need to handle.

I am honored to be asked to serve on the vestry again. St. Mark’s has been a very important part of my family’s life since we joined 24 years ago, shortly after my son Michael was born. My children, Michael (24) and Carey (18), grew up in the church and I participated in many activities with them during that time. I am currently on the Altar Guild and the Finance Committee, and I also serve as the food coordinator for the Pastoral Care Commission and as a greeter. I previously taught Sunday School and served as a Chapel Leader for Children’s Chapel. I am the firm administrator for the law firm of Walsh, Anderson, Gallegos, Green & Trevino, P.C., a 67-attorney firm that represents public schools in the areas of employment, student issues, governance, facilities and business transactions, and special education throughout Texas and New Mexico.

Annual Bishop’s Visitation Sunday, January 26 at 11:00 a.m.

Annual Parish Meeting Sunday, January 19 at 10:00 a.m.

At the Annual Parish Meeting we will extend our thanks to the outgoing Vestry members (Andrew Poynot, Lynn Edgerton, Rex White, Kim Buckner, and Ross Ramsey); we will elect a new class of five Vestry members; we will vote approval of the 2014 budget; we will receive ministry reports for 2013; and we will have time for fellowship.

The Rt. Rev. Dena Harrison, Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese of Texas, will be at St. Mark’s during the 11:00 service to Confirm and Receive adults* and youth. A luncheon for the Bishop with clergy and vestry members will follow at noon. *Any adults who are interested in being confirmed or received on January 26 are encouraged to join us for a three week class on Saturday mornings (10 – noon): Jan. 4, 11, and 18.

Outreach The Outreach Committee thanks everyone for the generous support of the Angel Tree. We are not collecting items for El Buen in January, but we will resume collection in February. Also in February the youth will be collecting money for the Souper Bowl of Caring. And the Shower Ministry continues to need donations of new or gently used winter items: hats, scarves, and gloves.

January 2014 From the garden The past year brought some beautiful improvements to our church grounds. We are grateful to Becky Nolan whose delightful touches on the corner kept us smiling through Advent and gave us joy at Christmas with her wreaths and agaves turned jesters. The small trees at the door and the other colorful touches made us ready for the wonders of Christmas Eve celebrations and Christmas morning. We continue to appreciate Joanne Foote and Dee Ann Thomasson who have shared the caretaking around the sanctuary entrance and office entry. We await the completion of Jay Doran’s wonderful columbarium project, and continue to enjoy the splendor of McKinney Isle with its lovely development which now includes a beautiful wooden St. Francis keeping watch over the space. And, we wait: we wait to see what new ideas will form in someone’s mind and heart when he or she decides to Adopt a Spot.

Have a wonderful restful January gardeners, as this is a time of quiet and planning for spring. As we contemplate a new year, let’s remember this verse from a calendar I love: The New Year lies before you like a spotless track of snow.

Be careful how you tread it for every mark will show.

Thank You! As of December 13 we had received 159 pledges for a total of $478,796. At this same time last year we had received 152 pledges for a total of $475,796. Our total is down just slightly, but the number of pledges has increased.

Parishioner Highlights Nancy and I have known each other since her days of working with AISD when she was a school nurse and I was the newly appointed Interim Director of Student Health Services. Seton’s Healthcare System was just beginning to govern AISD’s student health program at that time. She has always amazed me with her vast knowledge, varied talents, and sense of humor. Have you ever attended an adult education program or service in our chapel and found it to be a bit chilly? You should be able to find one of the wonderful shawls to snuggle in that Nancy created. It has also been my honor to have her as a friend and breakfast companion, along with some other steadfast parishioners, after our 7:30 church service. Please feel free to join us. We are a fun group!

(A) I have been associated with St Mark’s off and on since it was a mission under the leadership of Malcolm Riker+. I belonged to St. Mathew’s (when it was on Ridge Oak Drive overlooking the city of Austin). Malcolm would herd our EYC to St. Mark’s as helpers for his BBQ chicken dinner fundraisers.

(B) At St. Mark’s, I have helped with the Altar Guild; I LEM and lector at the 7:30 service; I have niche #12 in the outdoor Columbarium reserved for my ashes.

(B) I am also a Registered Nurse: I was a board certified Pediatric Nurse and worked for AISD as a school nurse for 13 years. I am board certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse and I work parttime for a hospice as a staff educator.

Hobbies/Interests.

(A) I am a biblioholic.

(B) I am a cartoholic.

(C) I knit to keep myself sane (mittens for the Trinity Center); I used to go to knitting camp in Wisconsin during July.

(D) I love to fly fish, but I haven’t in ages. I keep my assembled fly rod at the ready.

(A) I am a native Austinite, 6th generation Texan (1839), my DNA (the good and the less illustrious) has been in the colonies since 1680s.

(B) I have lived in Whispering Oaks (Westgate, Manchaca, Wm Cannon) since 31 August 1973, up the street from Ron and Betty Lee, also original to the block.

(C) I co-shepherd an intentional living support group at St. David’s with a close friend from high school (AHS ’66).

Christian Formation for Children and Youth

What Was the Fuss All About?

As the season of Christmas comes to an end, decorations are put away and we get back to the business of everyday life. After all the hubbub, though, it is sometimes too quiet, with too little to fill the vacuum left behind. At this point, it is easy to wonder what all the fuss was about. As Dennis Bratcher, the Director of The Voice, an online magazine produced by Christian Resource Institute, says in his Seasons of the Church Year section, Christmas is not just about “the ‘spirit of giving’ or the quest for global peace, or the importance of family, or the beauty of a snow-decorated ‘silent night’.” Bratcher says, “the true meaning of Christmas is about possibility in the midst of the impossible.”

“It is a possibility that is easily symbolized by a helpless infant that has nothing of its own by which to survive; yet an infant that, because he is Immanuel, God with us, will forever change the world and all humanity. It is this same God who has promised to be with us, with his people, with the church and with us individually, as we live as his people in the world…It is the hope, the possibility, that springs from impossible and insignificant beginnings, infused with the power of God through the Holy Spirit, that will blossom into a light to the nations.” http://www.crivoice.org/cyxmas.html And this light, this hope is still with us, even as the excitement of the holiday dims. As we move through the calendar of the Church year, the scriptures and celebrations help us remember and dig deeper into what this means. From the anticipation and expectation of Advent and the celebration of the incarnation of God in Jesus Christ at Christmas, we now come to the revelation of God’s presence and power in the world during the season of Epiphany. On Epiphany, January 6, we celebrate The Epiphany of our Lord Jesus Christ, and remember the story of the three magi, Gentiles, who followed a star to Bethlehem to find Jesus, the child who was born to be king of the Jews. The gifts presented to the child by the magi: gold (for royalty), frankincense (burned during worship and prayer), and myrrh (for anointing bodies before burial) make clear the magi, strangers from the east, recognized the significance of Jesus’ birth.

Epiphany is also called the Feast of Lights as a reminder that we are celebrating the coming of Christ who was sent to bring God’s light into a dark world. On the Sundays after Epiphany, we hear stories that confirm that Jesus was God’s son, including the story of Jesus’ baptism and stories about his ministry.

St. Mark’s will have many celebrations this month: On January 5 and 12, we will celebrate baptisms and renew our own baptismal vows to spread God’s light through ministry and mission. On the 5th, we will celebrate Epiphany with a reception at 10:00 a.m. And on January 26, Bishop Harrison will join us for Confirmation Sunday. I hope you and your families will be able to join us for these events!

As we begin this new calendar year, I would like to thank the teachers, Chapel leaders, youth, parents and other adults who lead programs for youth, for your commitment and presence in our programs throughout the year. Your work is truly appreciated! I look forward to another wonderful year working and celebrating together.

Before we begin our winter session, I would like to thank the many volunteers and participants in the Advent and Christmas services and activities here at St. Mark’s! Traditions like the Advent Wreath Making Event; The Cookie Exchange; Lessons and Carol; the Christmas Pageant; the Families with Young Children’s Manna Bags Party; donations of gifts to those in need at the Austin Children’s Shelter, House the Homeless organization and the homeless living on the streets bring a deeper sense of meaning to the seasons.

January 2014 We finished off the festivities with the Christmas Eve and Christmas day services. I would like to thank specifically those who took part in the Christmas Pageant: Shawna and Ray Gallardo, Ellie Reshetnikov, Jenna Ramsey, the actors, youth stage hands and coaches, youth lectors, parents, and all the other helpers who made our Christmas pageant so special!

Christian Formation Class Schedule for January will be held on Januar y 12 and 26 . We will take a break on January 5 for a parish Epiphany party and on January 19 so teachers can attend the Annual Parish Meeting. Please bring children to the Common Room on January 19 at 10:00 a.m. during the meeting.

We will move outside if the weather permits.

Christian Formation classes for children

Godly Play. Pre-Kindergartners and Kindergartners: children will learn about Epiphany and baptism on January 12 and then on January 26, begin a section on parables starting with the Parable of the Good Shepherd. The Godl y Play Tw o class for 1st and 2nd graders, will also hear the stories Epiphany and Holy Baptism, and then begin a series of stories about the prophets, beginning with an overview called The Prophets.

3rd, 4th and 5th Grade Class. We will move into the New Testament this winter with stories about Jesus. This month they will hear about Jesus’ miraculous birth and Jesus’ baptism and temptation as told in Matthew 1:18-2 and 3:13-4:17. David Genet and the class will continue to explore the stories through games, drama and storytelling.

Youth Class. The Youth will meet with Travis Smith+ and their team of teachers, Danielle Adkins, Jay Brown and Kathy Genet in the Bennett Wing Classroom for breakfast and Bible study.

Adult Formation Class Schedule for January Adult Formation meets at 10 a.m. in Grace Chapel. In January we will only have two Adult Formation classes (the 5th and the 12th) because of the Annual Parish Meeting on the 19th and the Bishop’s Visitation on the 26th.

On Januar y 5 , Elizabeth+ will lead an instructed Eucharist in the chapel. This will be a perfect opportunity to interrupt the service and ask questions that might come to mind.

On Januar y 12 we will discuss issues having to do with immigration.
