St. Mark’s News Volume 22/Issue 08

From the Rector The primary agenda for my first few weeks here has been just to get to know you—and good glory, I must say, y’all are beautiful. I’ve had the chance to talk with many of you (though still not nearly enough of you) one-on-one, either here at church or during our Thursday evening receptions (there’s still time to sign up for one by the way!). I’ve been astonished, over and over, at the immense diversity of experience and expertise that makes up our St. Mark’s family. I know most people are interesting enough when you dig deep enough, but I swear we’ve barely scratched the surface and I’m already jaw-dropped and having the time of my life. I look forward to so much more.

I’ve been getting to know our Day School teachers and children too. Imagine our church packed to the gills as it has been on recent Sunday mornings, but exclusively with young parents and giggling children: That’s exactly what took place a couple weeks ago during Day School Parent Orientation. I welcomed them on our behalf—I told them that whether or not they attend here on Sundays, they’re still part of our St. Mark’s family, and that it is our privilege to participate in the formation of their amazing kids, and thereby, the future of this world. One new thing we’ve started doing during Day School chapel is we have a children’s procession, during which we all follow the original St. Mark’s processional cross (which just might be due to reappear on Sunday mornings!). Lastly, I also must mention that I’ve been amazed by the immense diversity of, not just the people here, but the places to eat in this neighborhood. I have, for the time being, foregone the economic sustainability of packing my own lunch in the name of “very important sociological research of my new parish.” I’ve been systematically combing up and down S. Lamar to the utter delight of my taste buds, but probably to the detriment of my waist line. One exception has been that I’ve already returned multiple times to the Phoenica Bakery for the falafel sandwich, where in a short time I’ve become fast friends with the owner, Maria, and her Lebanese family who run the place. Whenever I come in, Maria greets me enthusiastically: “Hello, Abuna!” which is the Arabic word for “Father.” Good thing falafel is so healthy, right? Thanks for all that each of you have done to make these early weeks a blessing I’ll never forget. Much love, Zac+ Saturday, September 22, 2018, 6 p.m., Celebration of a New Ministry You are invited to come celebrate the installation of Fr. Zac Koons as the sixth Rector of St. Mark's. Bishop Doyle will be here for the installation, with a reception in the Parish Hall. The Rev. Bert Baetz will be preaching.
